Gold loan vs loan against securities in India: costs, risks, and when to choose each

Neither a gold loan nor a loan against securities (LAS) is automatically cheaper or safer. A gold loan pledges jewellery; an LAS pledges eligible shares, debentures, bonds, or other approved investments. The better choice depends on the asset you can pledge, the lender’s valuation and margin rules, your repayment certainty, and whether you could withstand losing the collateral.

Compare written offers for the same amount and term. Look beyond the headline interest rate: valuation, processing, pledge, renewal, late-payment and enforcement charges can change the total cost, while default can result in jewellery being auctioned or securities being sold.

Gold loan vs loan against securities: the essential difference

Both products are secured borrowing. You receive money and give the lender a right over an asset until the debt and agreed charges are paid. The asset, however, behaves very differently in each product.

Comparison point Gold loan Loan against securities (LAS)
Collateral Gold ornaments or jewellery are physically pledged. Purity, net gold content, deductions and the lender’s valuation method determine the amount offered. Eligible financial assets are pledged. Depending on the lender, these can include shares, debentures, bonds and other approved securities.
How value can change The lender generally values the gold at appraisal. The loan amount is affected by purity, net weight and the applicable loan-to-value (LTV) or margin. Market prices can change after disbursement. A fall in the value of pledged securities can create a collateral shortfall.
Repayment formats May be an instalment loan, overdraft or bullet structure. The contract states when interest and principal are due. May be a demand loan, overdraft or instalment facility. Interest servicing, recall rights and maturity depend on the agreement.
Main enforcement risk Unpaid dues can lead to sale or auction of the pledged jewellery. A margin shortfall or default can lead to a demand for more collateral, repayment or sale of pledged securities under the agreement.
What is not established market-wide No current universal interest rate, fee, approval time or borrowing percentage applies to every lender. No current universal interest rate, fee, cure period or borrowing percentage applies to every lender.

Use the comparison as a starting point, not a promise of what a particular bank, urban co-operative bank, non-banking financial company or other lender will offer. Their product disclosures and your signed agreement control.

How each facility works

Gold loan: jewellery is held as security

The lender tests the jewellery, records its purity and net gold content, applies its valuation and margin rules, and stores the pledged items. You receive the amount approved under the contract. The jewellery remains unavailable to you until the agreed obligations are settled and the lender releases it.

Ask whether you can be present during appraisal, what deductions are made for stones or other non-gold material, which value per gram or purity basis is used, and how the lender documents the package placed in custody. Obtain a receipt identifying the items and a loan statement showing principal, interest and charges.

LAS: investments are pledged, not sold

For an LAS, the lender accepts only securities on its approved list and records a pledge or equivalent encumbrance. You retain an economic interest in the investments, but your ability to transfer or freely dispose of them is restricted while the facility is outstanding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask which instruments qualify, how often their market value is checked, what margin must be maintained, and whether dividends, interest, bonus issues or other corporate actions are handled automatically or require instructions. Confirm whether the lender can recall the facility or sell securities after a shortfall and how notice is delivered.

How much can you borrow?

There is no single current amount or percentage that applies to every gold loan or LAS. The lender’s appraisal, eligible collateral, margin, borrower profile, repayment capacity and internal policy determine the sanctioned amount. Do not calculate your budget from an old advertisement or a maximum LTV figure without reading the current offer.

Gold-loan headroom

  • Confirm purity and net gold content, not just the jewellery’s gross weight.
  • Ask for the valuation rate used on the appraisal date and every deduction from that value.
  • Obtain the applicable LTV or margin in writing, including any product-specific cap.
  • Check whether the lender values each item separately and how damaged or irregular pieces are treated.

LAS headroom

  • Request the lender’s current eligible-security list and valuation source.
  • Ask what percentage of the security value can be borrowed and whether different instruments receive different margins.
  • Find out how frequently values are refreshed and whether intraday or end-of-day prices are used.
  • Ask what happens if a price fall creates a shortfall: additional collateral, part repayment, a higher margin or sale.

Regulatory material cited by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) describes minimum margins of 50% for physical equity shares and convertible debentures and 25% for dematerialised equity shares and convertible debentures in the specified bank-advance context. The same RBI framework allows banks to require higher margins. These parameters are not a universal current LAS quote for every lender or security; confirm the rules that apply to your facility.

Which is cheaper: a gold loan or an LAS?

Current evidence does not support a general winner. A valid comparison requires two written offers for the same net amount, expected repayment date and borrower circumstances. A lower advertised rate can be outweighed by valuation, pledge, account, renewal, delayed-payment or enforcement charges.

Request the same cost information from both lenders

  • Annualised interest rate and whether it is fixed or floating.
  • Whether interest is calculated on the sanctioned amount, the amount actually drawn, or an outstanding balance.
  • Processing, appraisal or valuation, documentation, pledge, account and renewal fees.
  • Repayment dates and the amount due on each date.
  • Late-payment, penal-interest and other default charges.
  • Prepayment or foreclosure conditions, including any notice or minimum-period requirement.
  • Costs triggered by a margin shortfall, additional collateral, sale of securities or gold auction, where applicable.
  • Total rupees payable under the repayment pattern you actually expect to use.

Compare the net amount disbursed, not merely the sanctioned limit. A fee deducted upfront means you may receive less cash while owing the full contractual principal.

Bullet repayment needs special care

A bullet facility postpones principal repayment until a stated maturity date. Interest still accrues under the contract; deferring principal does not make that interest disappear. Put the maturity amount and the date on your budget before accepting the facility.

RBI’s directions for urban co-operative banks describe a limited gold-loan bullet-repayment scheme with a 12-month ceiling and scheme-specific requirements. The material also describes a ₹2 lakh general ceiling and a ₹4 lakh ceiling for qualifying urban co-operative banks meeting stated priority-sector conditions. Those limits belong to that specified scheme and must not be presented as standard limits for all gold loans.

Repayment structures and what to verify

Gold-loan repayment

Products may require regular instalments, periodic interest servicing with principal at maturity, an overdraft-style drawdown, or a bullet payment. Ask exactly when principal is due, whether unpaid interest is capitalised, and whether renewal requires a fresh appraisal or payment.

LAS repayment

An LAS may operate as a demand loan, overdraft or instalment facility. Confirm the minimum interest-servicing frequency, the final maturity, the lender’s right to recall the facility, and whether unused sanctioned limits incur charges. A market fall can create a payment obligation before your planned investment exit, so keep a liquidity buffer.

Build a written repayment test

  1. Write down the net cash you will receive after all upfront deductions.
  2. List every scheduled interest and principal payment.
  3. For a bullet loan, reserve the full maturity amount rather than assuming a future asset sale will fund it.
  4. For an LAS, model a material fall in the pledged securities and identify where additional cash or collateral would come from.
  5. Reject the facility if repayment depends on an uncertain bonus, speculative investment gain or an asset sale you cannot control.

Gold-loan risks and safeguards

Default can result in sale or auction of the pledged jewellery. That loss can be financial, sentimental or both. Before signing, read the exact default notice, cure period, auction method, reserve-price rules, communication method and process for returning any surplus after sale.

In a 30 September 2024 circular, RBI said its review had found deficiencies at some supervised entities, including appraisal without the customer present, weak loan-to-value monitoring, inadequate due diligence and end-use monitoring, and insufficient auction transparency. It also referred to concerns about loan rollovers and evergreening. The statement describes observed supervisory shortcomings; it does not establish that every gold lender or every loan has those deficiencies.

Questions to ask at appraisal and custody

  • Can you observe the purity and weight assessment?
  • What is the recorded net gold weight and purity for each item?
  • What deductions are applied for stones, solder, clasps or other non-gold material?
  • Where and how is the jewellery stored, and who can access it?
  • What receipt, photographs or itemised record will you receive?
  • How and when will the jewellery be released after payment?

Questions to ask about default and auction

  • How many notices are sent and through which channels?
  • What is the exact period to cure the default?
  • How is the auction announced and how is the reserve price set?
  • Can you attend or obtain the auction record?
  • How is any surplus after the debt and permitted costs refunded?

LAS risks and safeguards

The central LAS risk is market-linked collateral. If shares or other securities fall, the lender may require additional collateral or repayment. If you cannot meet the demand, the agreement may allow a sale of pledged securities. A forced sale can lock in a loss and disrupt a long-term investment plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume a single market-wide cure period. Ask the lender how often it revalues collateral, how it calculates the shortfall, when and how it notifies you, how long you have to cure it, and whether it may sell without obtaining another consent after the contractual trigger.

Questions before pledging investments

  • Which securities and quantities are eligible today?
  • What margin applies to each security and can the lender change it?
  • How are volatile or concentrated holdings treated?
  • What happens to dividends, interest, rights issues and other corporate actions?
  • Can you substitute or release part of the collateral after a partial repayment?
  • Under what clause can the lender sell, and how are sale proceeds applied?

Shared risks and the asset you are willing to lose

Both products put an asset at risk if you do not repay as agreed. Compare the consequence, not just the interest rate. Losing jewellery may mean losing heirlooms that cannot be replaced. Losing securities may crystallise a market loss, interrupt an investment strategy and create tax or portfolio consequences that should be assessed with a qualified adviser.

Borrowing against an asset can also create false comfort: the collateral does not remove the repayment obligation. If sale proceeds do not cover the outstanding balance and permitted costs, check the contract for your continuing liability.

When a gold loan may fit

A gold loan may be worth comparing when you own acceptable jewellery, need liquidity, do not want to sell investments, and can meet the agreed repayment schedule before enforcement becomes relevant. It is less suitable when the jewellery has irreplaceable sentimental value, the appraisal is unclear, or your repayment plan depends on uncertain income.

When an LAS may fit

An LAS may be worth comparing when you already hold eligible investments, want to avoid selling them, and can absorb market-linked margin calls. It is less suitable when your portfolio is concentrated, a forced sale would be damaging, or you have no cash reserve for a sudden collateral shortfall.

These are conditional use cases, not personalised financial advice. A borrower who cannot confidently meet the repayment terms should consider alternatives to secured borrowing.

A practical decision framework

  1. Identify the pledgeable asset. List the jewellery or securities you could genuinely afford to encumber.
  2. Set the required net cash. Include any upfront fee deductions so the amount received is clear.
  3. Collect matched offers. Request the same amount, term and repayment style from each lender.
  4. Calculate total rupees payable. Include interest and every mandatory or foreseeable fee.
  5. Stress-test collateral. For gold, consider the consequences of auction; for LAS, model a sharp fall and a margin call.
  6. Read enforcement clauses. Record notice, cure, sale or auction and surplus-refund procedures.
  7. Choose only if repayment is dependable. If the plan requires an uncertain future event, do not rely on secured credit.

Application and review checklists

Before accepting a gold loan

  • Verify the lender’s legal identity and the product disclosure.
  • Receive an itemised appraisal and custody receipt.
  • Confirm the interest basis, net disbursement and total payable.
  • Mark every principal, interest and maturity date on a calendar.
  • Read default, auction and surplus-refund terms.
  • Keep copies of the agreement, valuation, receipts and payment records.

Before accepting an LAS

  • Confirm the eligible-security list and pledge mechanics.
  • Record the initial margin and the lender’s revaluation frequency.
  • Understand notification and cure procedures for a shortfall.
  • Check recall, sale, substitution and partial-release clauses.
  • Confirm all pledge, account, processing and enforcement charges.
  • Maintain cash or other eligible collateral for a possible margin call.

Regulatory context you should not overgeneralise

RBI materials cover different lender categories and products. The RBI master circular on advances against shares, debentures and bonds is older material and should be treated as a framework reference until current directions are confirmed. The RBI notification index also lists “Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025”; check the operative text, effective date, transitional provisions and applicability before relying on a specific current-rule statement.

Rules for banks, urban co-operative banks, NBFCs and other lenders can differ. A regulatory margin or scheme ceiling is not a promise that a particular lender will approve that amount, charge a particular rate or provide a particular cure period.

Questions to put side by side on one worksheet

Question Gold loan answer LAS answer
What asset is pledged? Itemised jewellery, purity and net gold content. Security name, quantity, eligibility and pledge status.
What value and margin are used? Appraisal basis, deductions and current LTV or margin. Market-value source, initial margin and maintenance margin.
What cash will arrive? Sanctioned amount less disclosed deductions. Drawn amount less disclosed deductions.
What is the total payable? Interest plus all scheduled and conditional charges. Interest plus all scheduled, pledge, account and shortfall-related charges.
When must you pay? Instalments, periodic interest, maturity or bullet date. Interest servicing, instalments, demand or maturity date.
What triggers enforcement? Payment default under the agreement. Payment default, recall or collateral-margin shortfall under the agreement.
What happens next? Notice, cure period, auction or sale and surplus handling. Notice, cure period, extra collateral or repayment, then possible security sale.

Bottom line for Indian borrowers

Choose the product whose collateral and enforcement consequences you understand and whose repayment you can meet without relying on a gamble. A gold loan exchanges temporary custody of jewellery for liquidity; an LAS keeps investments pledged while exposing you to market-driven margin calls and possible forced sale. Compare current written offers on net proceeds, total rupees payable, valuation and margin buffers, repayment dates, and default procedures. If one of those terms is unclear, the offer is not ready to compare.
