Gold Loan Risks in India: What Borrowers Should Know Before Pledging Jewellery

A gold loan can provide quick cash, but the jewellery secures a real debt. You may receive far less than the ornament’s retail or sentimental value, pay interest and charges on a schedule that becomes difficult to meet, and lose the jewellery if the account defaults. After notice and a regulated auction, you may also remain liable for a shortfall if the sale does not cover the amount due.

India’s Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules require documented valuation, borrower-present appraisal, auction procedures and timely return after repayment. They do not remove the need to assess affordability or read the lender’s contract. The applicable rules can depend on when your loan was sanctioned and when the lender adopted the 2025 framework.

What a gold loan is—and where the risk begins

A gold loan is secured borrowing: you hand over eligible gold jewellery or other permitted gold collateral, and the lender holds it until you repay or settle the account. The amount advanced is based on assessed gold content and the lender’s credit and policy rules, not on what you originally paid for the ornament.

The central risk is a mismatch between the value you attach to the jewellery and the value used for lending. Retail mark-ups, craftsmanship, gemstones and family significance do not increase the gold value used in the regulatory calculation. At the same time, interest, due dates, late charges and auction provisions continue to apply even though the lender holds the collateral.

  • Valuation risk: purity, net gold weight and the reference price may produce a lower value than expected.
  • Affordability risk: a loan that fits the permitted loan-to-value ratio (LTV) may still exceed what your income can repay.
  • Access risk: you cannot use or wear the jewellery while it is pledged.
  • Default risk: missed payments can lead to auction after notice, and a sale does not automatically guarantee that every debt obligation ends.

How the RBI valuation works

Gold content, not retail price

Under the RBI’s Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025, the lender values the actual gold or silver content at the relevant purity. Stones, gems and other non-gold elements are excluded. A jeweller’s invoice, making charge or sentimental value therefore cannot be treated as collateral value in the same way as gold weight and purity.

The reference price is the lower of two figures

The lender must use the lower of the average closing price over the preceding 30 days or the previous day’s closing price for the relevant purity. The source must be the India Bullion and Jewellers Association or a commodity exchange regulated by the Securities and Exchange Board of India. If the exact purity is not published, the nearest available purity is adjusted proportionately.

Ask the lender to show both price references, the purity applied and the arithmetic that produced the collateral value. A rising market price does not by itself mean your existing loan amount rises, because the lender must maintain the applicable LTV throughout the loan tenor.

Attend and document the assay

RBI requires the borrower to be present when the lender assays the jewellery at sanction. The appraiser should explain deductions for stones, lac, alloy, strings and fastenings. Your certificate should record:

  • purity;
  • gross weight;
  • net gold weight;
  • each deduction;
  • any damage or visible defect;
  • an image of the pledged items; and
  • the collateral value used for the loan.

Keep the signed borrower copy with the agreement. It is the practical reference for checking that the same pieces and condition are returned.

How much can you borrow?

For consumption loans, the 2025 directions set maximum LTV ceilings. LTV compares the outstanding loan with the collateral value; for a bullet-repayment loan, the calculation includes the total amount repayable at maturity. These are regulatory ceilings, not a promise that a lender will offer the maximum.

Total consumption-loan amount Maximum LTV
Up to ₹2.5 lakh 85%
Above ₹2.5 lakh and up to ₹5 lakh 80%
Above ₹5 lakh 75%

The lender must maintain the applicable ratio throughout the tenor. Because the loan balance, accrued amounts and collateral valuation affect the calculation, ask for the outstanding amount needed to close the account on each relevant date rather than assuming that the original advance is the whole payoff.

Repayment risks to check before signing

Match the schedule to cash flow

Read the Key Fact Statement (KFS) and the complete agreement in a language you understand. Identify the interest calculation, instalment or bullet-maturity date, payment method, renewal conditions, top-up conditions, late-payment consequences and every fee. Assay and auction charges that apply must be disclosed in the KFS and agreement.

A bullet loan can appear manageable because regular principal instalments are not required, but the full amount due at maturity must be available at once. A renewal or rollover is not a guaranteed extension and can add cost or leave you with an overdue account. The RBI has reported selected supervised entities using rollovers with only partial payment; that observation shows why you should obtain a written statement of what a renewal actually settles and what remains outstanding.

Do not treat the LTV limit as an affordability test

The 85%, 80% and 75% limits only constrain the relationship between collateral and debt. They do not test whether your income can cover interest, principal, household expenses and an unexpected bill in the same month. Borrow less than the permitted maximum if repayment would depend on a speculative sale, uncertain bonus or another loan.

Compare offers on identical information

When comparing lenders, use the same jewellery description and ask each one to provide the following in writing:

  1. purity, gross weight, net gold weight and deductions;
  2. the reference price and resulting collateral value;
  3. the amount advanced and total repayment schedule;
  4. all disclosed interest, assay, processing, late and auction charges;
  5. renewal and top-up conditions;
  6. default, notice, auction, surplus and shortfall clauses; and
  7. custody, release and discrepancy procedures.

This prevents a larger headline loan from hiding a higher repayment obligation or weaker default terms.

What happens after a missed payment?

Get the position in writing immediately

Contact the lender as soon as you know a payment will be missed. Request the current dues, the date by which you can cure the default, the payment instructions and any available settlement option in writing. Keep receipts, bank confirmations, notices and every message. Do not assume that a phone promise pauses an auction.

Notice and auction safeguards

RBI directions require adequate notice before auction. The auction must be announced in at least two newspapers: one regional-language newspaper and one national daily. The first auction is to be physical and held in the district where the lending branch is located, subject to the directions governing subsequent auctions.

The reserve price must be at least 90% of the current value. If two auctions fail, the minimum reserve price becomes 85%. These floors do not guarantee a sale at retail value, a price reflecting workmanship or a price that covers your entire debt.

A sale may leave a surplus—or a shortfall

After the auction, the lender must provide the borrower or legal heir with full details of the sale value and the dues adjusted against it. Any surplus must be refunded within seven working days after the lender receives all auction proceeds. The lender may recover a shortfall under the loan agreement, so read that clause before pledging the jewellery.

The RBI’s September 2024 review of selected supervised entities noted low auction realisation relative to estimated gold value at some entities and found transparency deficiencies. Those were supervisory findings about selected entities, not a market-wide auction-discount statistic or a statement about every lender.

Rules, dates and older loans

The RBI issued the Lending Against Gold and Silver Collateral Directions, 2025, on June 6, 2025, and updated them on September 29, 2025. The framework covers commercial banks, specified co-operative banks, non-bank finance companies and housing finance companies. Lenders are expected to comply as soon as possible and no later than April 1, 2026.

A loan sanctioned before a lender adopted the 2025 directions may continue under the earlier applicable guidelines. Do not assume that a new requirement automatically governs an older account. Ask the lender which rule set and contract apply to your sanction date, and retain the answer with your loan records.

The RBI’s September 30, 2024 circular said that its review and onsite examinations of selected supervised entities indicated “several irregular practices” in lending against pledged gold ornaments and jewellery. The examples included weak LTV monitoring, valuation without the customer present, insufficient end-use checks, opaque auctions and overdue loans not classified appropriately. They demonstrate possible process failures, but they do not establish how common those practices are across the industry.

How collateral is returned after repayment

Once you fully repay or settle the loan, the lender should release the collateral the same day where possible and no later than seven working days. Take your assay certificate to the release appointment and inspect every piece in the lender’s presence. Compare purity, identifying features, count, image and recorded condition.

If an item is missing, damaged or deteriorated, report it immediately and ask the lender to record the discrepancy. The directions require compensation for loss or discrepancy attributable to the lender. If release is delayed beyond seven working days for a reason attributable to the lender, compensation is ₹5,000 for each day of delay. If the delay is not attributable to the lender, the lender must communicate the reason.

Obtain a written release or closure acknowledgment showing that the account is settled and the collateral has been returned. Store it with the payment proof and assay certificate.

A practical pre-pledge checklist

  1. Confirm the lender and rule set. Check that the institution falls within the RBI framework and ask whether it has adopted the 2025 directions for your loan.
  2. Read the KFS and agreement. Mark the interest method, due dates, bullet maturity, renewal and top-up rules, all charges, default triggers, auction process and shortfall clause.
  3. Attend the assay. Watch the weighing and deductions; insist that purity, gross and net weight, condition, image and value appear on the certificate.
  4. Verify the valuation. Ask for the lower 30-day-average or previous-day closing price used, its source and the LTV calculation.
  5. Stress-test repayment. Calculate the payment or maturity amount against dependable income, not the maximum advance available against the jewellery.
  6. Plan for a missed payment. Save the lender’s contact channel and know how to obtain a written payoff figure and settlement deadline.
  7. Protect the record. Keep the certificate, agreement, receipts, notices and communications in one secure place.

Questions to ask before handing over jewellery

  • What is the exact net gold weight after every deduction?
  • Which purity and price reference were used, and can I see the calculation?
  • What amount will I owe on the maturity date or on an early-closure date?
  • Which charges apply if I am late, renew, top up or require an auction?
  • How much notice will I receive before auction, and what happens if the sale leaves a surplus or shortfall?
  • How and when will the jewellery be released after repayment?
  • Who should I contact, in writing, if the returned items differ from the assay certificate?

Bottom line

Pledging jewellery exchanges possession of an asset with personal and financial value for a loan whose repayment terms control the outcome. The safest approach is to borrow only what your cash flow can repay, document the assay and valuation in detail, compare the complete KFS and agreement, and act immediately on any missed payment. RBI safeguards create a process for appraisal, notice, auction and return; they cannot make an unaffordable loan affordable or ensure that an auction preserves the jewellery’s retail or sentimental value.
