1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most long-term investors who want listed exposure to bullion, a physical-gold trust is usually simpler than holding gold futures directly. It avoids contract expiry, delivery procedures and daily variation-margin calls. Direct futures can be the better tool when you need contract-level exposure, understand leverage and can actively manage margin and expiry. There is no universal winner, however, because “gold ETF” can describe either a trust holding bullion or a fund using futures and other derivatives.
The useful comparison is therefore three-way: a physical-bullion trust, a futures-based exchange-traded fund and a directly traded futures contract. Their exposure, costs, tracking behavior, operational demands, account access and tax treatment differ materially. The exact prospectus, contract terms and broker rules in force when you invest matter more than the wrapper’s marketing label.

Start with the right definition of a gold ETF
“Gold ETF” is commonly used for several exchange-traded products. Before comparing returns, identify what the product actually owns.
Physical-bullion trust
A physical trust holds gold bars with a custodian and issues shares that trade in a securities account. The shares are designed to reflect the value of the trust’s bullion, less sponsor and operating expenses. A Goldman Sachs trust filing describes assets consisting principally of custodied gold bullion and states that the trust does not trade commodity futures. The filing also cautions that trust shares are not the exact equivalent of an investment in gold.

Because the trust pays expenses from its assets, the amount of gold represented by each share can decline over time. The market price of a share can also differ temporarily from its underlying net asset value because of trading demand, premiums or discounts and market conditions.
Futures-based fund
A futures-based fund obtains gold exposure through futures contracts and may hold cash or other collateral. Some funds move, or “roll,” positions from a nearer expiration into a later one. The schedule, contracts selected, collateral policy and methodology are specific to each fund’s prospectus. A fund marketed as a gold ETF therefore does not necessarily own bullion bars.
Rolling creates a return component that is separate from the change in spot gold. When the later contract is priced above the expiring one, the fund can face a negative roll effect when it sells the nearer contract and buys the more expensive later contract. When the later contract is priced below the nearer one, the roll relationship can be favorable. The outcome changes with the futures curve and with the fund’s implementation.

Direct gold futures
Buying a futures contract gives you a defined delivery month and a standardized contract unit rather than a perpetual share. The cited 2026 U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filing describes the COMEX gold contract as representing 100 troy ounces and being physically delivered at expiration. A trader who does not intend to make or take delivery must close, roll or otherwise liquidate the position before the broker’s deadline.
Futures use margin instead of requiring payment of the entire notional value when the position is opened. That structure gives efficient exposure but also magnifies gains and losses relative to the cash deposited. Margin requirements can change, and the position is marked to market every trading day.
Side-by-side structure comparison
| Feature | Physical-bullion trust | Futures-based fund | Direct gold futures |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary exposure | Gold bullion held by a custodian | Gold futures, with cash or other collateral possible | A specific gold futures contract |
| How you trade it | Shares through a securities account | Fund shares through a securities account | Futures account through a broker |
| Contract expiry | No contract expiry for the share itself | Underlying contracts expire and are normally rolled according to the fund’s methodology | Defined delivery month; the cited COMEX contract represents 100 troy ounces |
| Delivery exposure | The trust structure is not personal possession of bars | Depends on the fund’s contracts and procedures; read its prospectus | Physical delivery is specified at expiration in the cited filing |
| Main ongoing cost mechanism | Sponsor and trust expenses reduce net assets or gold per share | Fund expenses, trading costs and the economics of rolling contracts | Brokerage costs, bid-ask spreads, margin financing and the economics of closing or rolling |
| Leverage and cash calls | No contract-level variation-margin call from the trust structure | Leverage depends on the fund’s strategy and the account used to buy its shares | Daily mark-to-market and variation-margin requirements can require additional cash |

How costs affect a long holding period
Physical trust expenses compound quietly
A trust’s sponsor fee and other operating expenses are deducted from trust assets. The iShares Gold Trust product page cited for this comparison listed a 0.25% sponsor fee when accessed in 2026. That is one product’s stated fee, not a market-wide rate; check the current prospectus because fees can change.
Suppose gold’s market price is unchanged for a period. The trust still has expenses to pay, so the quantity of gold backing each share can fall. Over many years, that drag can create a persistent difference between the share’s result and the spot-gold reference an investor has in mind. Trading spreads, premiums or discounts and the timing of purchases add further tracking differences.
Futures funds add roll economics
A futures-based fund pays its own management and operating expenses and incurs costs when it trades contracts. Its return reflects the change in the futures positions, collateral income or losses where applicable, and the result of each roll. A spot-gold chart does not show those roll effects.
Do not assume that a futures fund will always underperform bullion in contango or always outperform in backwardation. The direction and size of the effect depend on the curve, the contracts used, the timing of the roll and market conditions. Compare the fund’s stated methodology and historical tracking information with the exposure you actually want.
Direct futures have visible and less visible costs
A futures position generates brokerage commissions and bid-ask spreads when opened, closed or rolled. Because the position is marked to market daily, cash may need to be added after an adverse move even if you intend to hold for years. Capital set aside as margin also has an opportunity cost, and the cost of maintaining exposure changes when margin rules or broker requirements change.
Direct futures can look inexpensive when judged only by the small initial margin relative to notional value. That comparison is incomplete: the same leverage that reduces the cash needed to open the position increases the percentage impact of every price move on the deposited funds.

What margin, leverage and daily settlement mean
- Select a contract month. You choose a listed expiration rather than an open-ended holding. The month determines when the contract must be closed, rolled or settled.
- Post the broker’s required margin. Margin is a performance bond, not a down payment that limits your loss to the amount deposited. The contract’s notional exposure can be much larger than the margin.
- Receive daily mark-to-market results. Gains and losses are credited or debited as the contract is repriced. An adverse move can create a variation-margin call while the position is still open.
- Maintain sufficient liquidity. If you cannot meet a call, the broker may reduce or liquidate the position under its rules. Margin requirements can be revised, including during volatile markets.
- Exit or roll before delivery deadlines. A trader who does not want 100 troy ounces delivered must follow the broker’s cutoff dates and execute the required closing or rollover trades.
This operational cycle is the central reason direct futures are usually a better fit for experienced participants than for a set-and-forget retirement allocation. A futures-based fund handles contract selection and rolling inside the fund, but its shareholders still bear the resulting costs and tracking behavior.
Which structure is usually better for a long-term investor?
A physical trust is often the simpler default
A physical trust may fit an investor who wants listed exposure linked to bullion, plans to hold through a securities account and does not need contract-level leverage. There is no futures delivery month to manage, and the investor can buy or sell shares during market hours like other exchange-traded securities. The trade-off is the trust’s expense drag, custody arrangement and the possibility that the share price does not exactly match bullion at every moment.
A futures-based fund requires product-level due diligence
A futures fund may be useful when its mandate, liquidity and implementation match your objective, but “ETF” alone does not tell you whether it owns bars or futures. Read the prospectus for the contracts used, collateral, roll schedule, permitted investments, expense structure and principal risks. Two funds with similar names can have materially different exposure because one holds bullion while another obtains exposure through derivatives.

Direct futures are a specialist tool
Direct futures may suit an experienced market participant who needs a particular contract month, wants efficient notional exposure or actively manages hedges and rolls. The investor must be able to monitor margin, daily settlement, liquidity, expiration and possible delivery. A long-term intention does not remove those short-term obligations; it only means the position may need to be rolled repeatedly.
A practical decision framework
Work through these questions before selecting an instrument:
- What exposure do you actually want? Choose between bullion held by a trust, a fund’s futures exposure or a specific futures contract. If physical bars are important, verify custody and redemption terms; a trust share is not personal bullion ownership.
- How much operational work can you do? Shares require ordinary securities-account monitoring. Futures require contract-month management, daily margin awareness and action before delivery deadlines.
- Can your account trade the instrument? A securities account may offer trust or fund shares while requiring a separate futures approval, margin agreement and risk disclosures for contracts. Confirm eligibility, permissions and broker liquidation rules before committing capital.
- How will you measure tracking? For a trust, compare the share’s total return with its bullion reference after expenses. For a futures fund, examine roll methodology and the relationship between its results and the relevant futures curve. For direct futures, include the results of every roll, spread and financing decision.
- What liquidity reserve is available? A futures position needs cash beyond the opening margin to withstand adverse daily settlement. Do not allocate money that may be needed to meet a variation-margin call.
- What is the tax and account context? Treatment can vary by instrument, account type, jurisdiction and investor circumstances. The available disclosures do not establish a universal tax comparison, so review current fund documents and obtain qualified tax advice before relying on a tax assumption.

Why it fails: Futures prices and roll transactions introduce returns that a spot chart does not capture.
Fix: Review the fund’s contract months, roll timetable and disclosures about contango and backwardation, then compare the result with the benchmark that matches the fund’s actual exposure.
Treating margin as the maximum possible loss
Why it fails: Margin supports a larger notional position and daily losses can exceed the initial deposit.
Fix: Size the position against the full notional exposure and maintain a liquidity buffer for variation margin. Recheck requirements after major market or broker changes.

Why it fails: A long-term thesis does not make a futures contract perpetual. Holding through the delivery period can create obligations you did not intend.

- Write the exposure requirement in one sentence. For example: “I want unlevered, exchange-traded exposure intended to reflect bullion over many years,” or “I need a specific futures month for an actively managed hedge.”
- Classify each candidate. Label it physical trust, futures-based fund or direct futures. Do not proceed while the structure is unclear.
- Collect current primary documents. For a trust or fund, read the prospectus, fee schedule, holdings and risk factors. For futures, read the contract specifications, margin schedule and broker delivery procedures.
- Estimate the complete cost path. Include sponsor or fund expenses, bid-ask spread, commissions, financing or cash-management effects and, for futures exposure, each expected roll.
- Stress the operational failure points. Ask what happens if gold falls sharply, margin rises, the futures curve changes, liquidity narrows or the account cannot meet a call.
- Set review dates. Recheck fees, margin rules, contract availability, fund methodology and tax documentation. These terms are not permanent and should not be treated as fixed.
What the cited disclosures establish
The 2026 SEC filing cited for the COMEX contract specifies 100 troy ounces per contract and physical delivery at expiration. The iShares Gold Trust page accessed on October 13, 2026, listed a 0.25% sponsor fee; current terms should be verified before investing. The Goldman Sachs trust filing states:
“The Trust does not and will not hold or trade in commodity futures contracts regulated under the Commodity Exchange Act.”
Those examples illustrate why product documents matter: one trust’s structure and fee cannot be generalized to every gold ETF, and one contract’s specification cannot be generalized to every gold-linked derivative. The available disclosures do not provide a broadly applicable statistic ranking long-term ETF returns against futures returns, so no universal performance winner can be stated.
Bottom line for long-term investors
If your priority is straightforward, listed bullion exposure without managing contract expiry or variation margin, start by evaluating a physical-gold trust and its current expense and tracking disclosures. If you are considering an ETF, verify whether it owns bullion or futures before comparing it with a trust. Choose direct futures only when the contract’s leverage, daily settlement, rollover and potential delivery fit your experience, liquidity and monitoring capacity. The better instrument is the one whose structure and operating demands match your objective—not the one with the most attractive label.
