Get Paid to Limit Social Media Time? What Portland Startup Dayo Offers Now

By TheFinanceBase Team 7 min read

Dayo began as a Portland-area app that promised up to $5 a day in reward value for staying under a social-media limit. But that “payment” was generally a marketplace credit or discount—not unrestricted cash—and the iPhone product has since shifted toward physical-object app unlocking, focus modes and paid plans.

Here is how the 2025 rewards model worked, what Dayo appears to offer now, and what users should check before treating it as a money-saving tool.

How Dayo’s original rewards model worked

Dayo launched on April 7, 2025, according to GeekWire. The basic bargain was simple: choose social apps to monitor, set a daily limit and receive more reward value when you used them less.

  1. Select the social apps Dayo should monitor.
  2. Set a target—launch coverage described a 30-minute daily limit.
  3. Let the app track usage in the background.
  4. Stay below the limit to accumulate as much as $5 in daily reward value.
  5. Exceed the limit and lose some of that day’s accumulated amount.
  6. Use the balance in Dayo’s marketplace for participating products.

The launch report said the marketplace could offer discounts of up to 40% on selected products. Named brands included JBL, Rumpl, Ruff and Yeti. Other product copy referenced brands such as Gucci, Caraway and Stumptown, but brand availability and inventory can change.

“Get paid” did not necessarily mean cash

The most important qualification is that Dayo was not presented as a general-purpose income app. The available launch description indicates that users earned credits or purchase value that could be applied to participating products.

In practical terms, a $5 balance was not automatically equivalent to $5 deposited into a bank account. It might reduce the price of an eligible marketplace purchase instead. App Store reviews also described the balance as credits and complained that it could be used as a discount rather than cashed out. Reviews are anecdotal, but they reinforce the need to read the redemption terms carefully.

Before relying on any reward, confirm:

  • Whether the balance can be withdrawn or only spent in the marketplace.
  • Which products and brands are eligible.
  • Whether a purchase is required to realize the value.
  • Whether credits expire or vary by location.
  • Whether a subscription is required for the relevant feature.
  • What happens to accumulated value after exceeding the daily limit.

There is no evidence in the supplied current documentation that users should assume unrestricted cash payouts.

The Portland startup behind Dayo

Dayo was co-founded by Corey Scholibo, its chief executive, and Patrick Triato, its chief operating officer. At the time of GeekWire’s April 2025 report, the company had eight employees and described itself as bootstrapped, with two institutional investments connected to the Oregon Entrepreneur Network’s 2024 Tech Prize and the City of Beaverton’s 2024 Startup Challenge.

The original business model relied on brand partnerships. Users received an incentive to reduce social-media use, while participating brands gained access to a marketplace aimed at people interested in wellness, productivity and mindful technology. Dayo’s revenue came from those commercial relationships, according to the launch coverage.

What Dayo is now

The current App Store listing calls the product Dayo: Pause the Distractions. As of August 18, 2026, its public positioning emphasizes distraction blocking rather than the original rewards marketplace.

The major change is the use of Totems: selected physical objects that users photograph to unlock protected apps. The physical step is designed to create more friction than simply tapping past a warning. Dayo’s current terms, effective May 30, 2026, describe an iOS app that can lock selected apps until the user photographs a chosen Totem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The current listing also highlights:

  • App shields and app locking.
  • Daily app limits.
  • Work, Sleep, Study and Focus modes.
  • 25-, 50- and 90-minute focus blocks.
  • Streaks and weekly recaps.
  • Buddy Focus, which lets users focus alongside friends.
  • Limited locks and focus blocks in the free tier.
  • Paid features such as scheduled locks, unlimited manual locks and Buddy Focus.

The listing displays price signals including Dayo Pro at $9.99, Totem Pro at $34.99 and a founders price of $24.99. The billing period is not unambiguous for every displayed product. Dayo’s terms describe Totem Pro as an auto-renewing annual subscription, so prospective customers should rely on the purchase screen for the exact plan, price and renewal period.

In other words, the original “earn up to $5 a day” description should be treated as a 2025 launch model, not as a guaranteed description of the current app.

How usage monitoring works

Dayo’s current privacy policy says the app uses Apple’s Family Controls and DeviceActivity frameworks. Users must explicitly authorize Screen Time access. Apple supplies Dayo with opaque app tokens and minute counts, which the company says it uses to enforce limits and show usage information.

According to Dayo’s policy, the company does not receive the actual names of blocked apps or a complete browsing history, and usage data is processed on the device for enforcement and usage displays. That is Dayo’s stated privacy position, not an independent audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This technical boundary matters. “Monitoring social media” does not necessarily mean monitoring every visit to a social service. App-level usage can differ from browser activity, use on another device, notifications, share sheets or embedded web views.

What personal information does the current app collect?

Dayo’s privacy policy says it may collect:

  • A phone number for login and optional weekly recap text messages.
  • A display name and optional email address.
  • Totem photos and labels.
  • An image-feature representation used for Totem matching.
  • Optional location information when enrolling a Totem.
  • Lock and unlock events, reflections and streak information.
  • Push-notification tokens.
  • Crash and diagnostic data.

The App Store’s developer-provided privacy disclosure separately lists contact information, contacts, user content, identifiers and diagnostics among data that may be collected and not linked to the user. Apple notes that those disclosures are supplied by the developer and are not independently verified by Apple.

The current terms require users to be at least 13 and to sign in with a phone number and six-digit SMS verification code.

Who is Dayo best suited for?

Dayo may make sense for an iPhone user who wants a commitment device rather than another reminder notification. The Totem ritual adds deliberate physical friction, while app limits, scheduled locks and focus sessions can make a distraction rule harder to ignore.

60 Minute Visual Timer for Kids, Silent Countdown Clock, Time Management Tool for Homeschool Study Supplies, Classroom, Home, Kitchen, Desk (Green)
  • [Time Management] - The 60 minute countdown timer shows time passing in a clear, visible way. A quick glance is enough to understand how much time is left, helping kids and adults stay focused and efficient during study, cooking, workouts, or tasks
  • [Easy to Use] - Just turn the knob to set the countdown, and the green disk will shrink as time passes. No screens, no setup—perfect for kids, seniors, and simple tools like a classroom timer, kitchen timer, or small egg timer
  • [Silent Mode & No Ticking] - Operates silently without ticking sounds, making it ideal for classrooms and libraries. The optional alarm rings clearly at the end of the countdown, ensuring you never miss a reminder
  • [Special Needs] - The intuitive visual dial is easy for all ages to understand, including children with autism, ADHD, or other learning differences. Perfect as a classroom timer, office timer, or study timer for kids and teachers
  • [Product Details] - Lightweight, small, and durable ABS construction designed for everyday use at home, school, or office. Powered by 2 AAA batteries (not included). Compact enough for a desk, kitchen, or backpack, so you can take it anywhere

It may also interest parents and teenagers who agree on an explicit incentive. However, the original parent-funded deal concept should not be confused with the current terms, which describe a single-user product. Verify current family, supervision and reward features inside the app before paying or making a household agreement.

Dayo is a poor fit for someone who:

  • Uses Android as a primary device. The current listing is for Apple platforms and requires iOS 16 or later on iPhone; no reliable Android version of this Portland product is established here.
  • Wants dependable unrestricted cash.
  • Needs guaranteed browser-wide or cross-device enforcement.
  • Does not want to grant Screen Time permissions.
  • Must frequently switch between social apps and messaging tools for work.
  • Would pay more in subscriptions than the value of any rewards they can realistically redeem.

Limitations and failure modes

App blocking is not the same as perfect behavior change. Dayo’s terms disclaim uninterrupted or error-free operation and acknowledge that Apple’s Screen Time framework can contain bugs.

Potential problems include:

  • Usage totals that do not match a user’s expectations.
  • Messaging, sharing or app-state behavior that appears to count unexpectedly.
  • Timer-display or countdown problems after an app update.
  • Incomplete totals across multiple devices.
  • Access to the same service through a browser or an unmonitored device.
  • Screen Time permissions being revoked after a reset, account change or settings change.
  • Rewards or brand inventory changing, expiring or varying by geography.

Do not treat App Store testimonials as controlled evidence that Dayo reduces screen time. They can reveal practical complaints or successes, but they do not establish effectiveness for every user.

Dayo compared with simpler alternatives

Option What it offers Main trade-off
Apple Screen Time Built-in app limits and device controls No separate reward marketplace or Totem ritual
Opal Dedicated focus and app-blocking tools Compare current device support, enforcement and pricing
Jomo Screen-time and app-limit features Compare current automation, platform support and subscription terms
Freedom Distraction blocking across devices Its focus is broader blocking, not physical unlocking or rewards
Manual family agreement Parent-funded allowance or a household contract More privacy and flexibility, but no automatic enforcement

These are categories rather than rankings. Pricing, device coverage and features can change, so check each provider’s current terms before choosing one.

What to check before signing up

  1. Identify the product you are buying. Is it a current blocking plan, a Totem feature or an available marketplace reward?
  2. Calculate the real value. Compare the subscription cost with the reward value you can actually redeem.
  3. Confirm liquidity. Determine whether rewards are cash, credits, discounts or product-specific offers.
  4. Check coverage. Decide whether your social-media use occurs on the iPhone app itself, a browser, another device or multiple platforms.
  5. Review permissions and data. Read the privacy policy before authorizing Screen Time, phone login, photos or optional location.
  6. Plan for exceptions. Decide how work, travel, emergencies, shared devices and app failures will be handled.
  7. Read renewal terms. Confirm the exact price, billing period and auto-renewal setting on the purchase screen.

The bottom line

Dayo’s original idea was more nuanced than the headline suggested: it rewarded reduced social-media use with credits or purchase value, not necessarily spend-anywhere cash. The launch model used a 30-minute target, offered up to $5 in daily value and promoted discounts on selected brand products.

The current iPhone product appears to be something broader and different: a distraction blocker built around Totems, app locks, focus modes, streaks and subscriptions. That makes Dayo potentially useful as a commitment device for Apple users, but it is not a straightforward cash-making app. Anyone considering it should verify the current reward availability, subscription cost, device coverage and privacy terms before treating the service as a financial benefit.
