1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNeither Generac nor Kohler is the universal winner. The right home standby generator is the complete system that matches your home’s starting loads, available fuel, transfer equipment, installation site, budget and local service support. A headline such as “24 kW” is not enough: the same model can produce different output on natural gas and liquid propane, and two packages with similar generator ratings may include different transfer switches or installation requirements.
Use the comparison below to narrow the models, then have an authorized or certified dealer perform an in-home assessment and provide an itemized installed quote. That approach is more useful financially than comparing generator-only retail prices.

The short answer: compare the installed system, not just the brand
Generac and Kohler both sell permanently installed standby generators designed to start automatically when utility power fails. Typical systems connect to a natural-gas line or liquid-propane tank and use an automatic transfer switch to move selected or whole-home circuits to generator power. The brand name matters, but the practical result depends just as much on the exact model, fuel, transfer equipment, installation and service provider.
Choose Generac when a specific Generac package, monitoring arrangement and nearby dealer provide the best fit for your loads and total quote. Choose Kohler when its fuel-specific rating, included equipment, warranty terms or local support are stronger for your site. Do not treat either brand’s marketing language as proof of superior reliability: the official sources cited for this comparison do not establish an independent, controlled head-to-head reliability or lifespan result.
#1 Best Overall
For a financially sound decision, ask both sides for the same information:
- Exact model number and output on your home’s actual fuel.
- Automatic transfer switch, load-management hardware, monitoring equipment and any recurring subscription included.
- Site work, fuel connection, electrical work, permits, inspection and commissioning.
- Warranty duration, hour limit, registration and installer conditions.
- Maintenance pricing, emergency response and parts availability in your area.
Generac vs. Kohler at a glance
| Decision point | How to compare | What the manufacturer information establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Output and sizing | Compare the exact model’s natural-gas and LPG ratings, then calculate running and motor-starting loads. | Kohler’s 24RCLA is listed at 24 kW on LPG and 21 kW on natural gas. Generac’s ratings are model- and fuel-specific in its 20/22/24 kW Guardian specification sheet. |
| System contents | Confirm whether the transfer switch, load controls and monitoring are part of the quoted SKU. | Kohler lists the 20RCA transfer switch separately, while the 20RCAL package includes one; the 24RCLA listing also identifies an included switch. Generac sells bundles that can include a transfer switch, but the selected SKU must be checked. |
| Warranty | Compare years, operating-hour limit, parts, labor, travel, registration and installer requirements. | Kohler describes five years or 2,000 hours with parts, labor and travel coverage after certified installer/dealer registration. Generac describes five-year limited warranties on relevant models and dealer installation and activation conditions for qualification. |
| Installed price | Compare itemized, like-for-like proposals rather than generator-only prices. | Fuel work, permits, site preparation, clearances, electrical work and transfer equipment can materially change the price. Kohler says simple installations can start at $2,000, but presents that as a starting example rather than a universal installed cost. |
| Service | Evaluate the actual local installer, maintenance plan, response time and parts access. | Both companies direct homeowners to dealers or certified professionals. Generac publishes dealer tiers; Kohler provides certified-dealer and owner-support pathways. |
| Noise and footprint | Use the selected model’s sound rating, dimensions, clearances and climate options. | Kohler publishes model-specific sound and engine information for the 24RCLA. Do not apply one model’s measurements to an entire brand lineup. |
Start with the home’s loads and available fuel
Why a kW label does not size the system
“How many kW do I need for a whole-house generator?” cannot be answered from house square footage alone. A load assessment considers the appliances and circuits you want powered, their running demand and the surge required when motors start. Refrigerators, well pumps, sump pumps, air-conditioning compressors, heat pumps, furnaces, electric water heaters, ranges, electric vehicle chargers and workshop equipment can have very different starting characteristics.
Decide first what “backup” means for your household. A selected-load system may keep refrigeration, heating controls, communications, pumps and a few essential receptacles running. A whole-home design attempts to carry substantially more of the service, but may require a larger generator, staged load management or a different electrical configuration. Your dealer should document which circuits are protected rather than describing the system simply as “whole house.”
Compare output on the fuel you will actually use
Natural gas and liquid propane do not always produce the same rated output from one generator. The clearest example is Kohler’s 24RCLA: the manufacturer lists 24 kW on LPG and 21 kW on natural gas. Comparing that product with a competitor’s “24 kW” headline without matching fuel columns can create a false equivalence.
Generac’s 20/22/24 kW Guardian specification sheet likewise gives model- and fuel-specific ratings. Ask the dealer to put the applicable rating in the quote, along with the required gas pressure or propane-tank arrangement. The household’s fuel capacity and supply reliability are part of the design: a generator cannot deliver its rated output if the site cannot supply the required fuel.
Have the dealer document starting-load assumptions
A professional assessment should identify large motors, simultaneous starts and any circuits that will be shed when demand rises. Ask whether the proposal includes load-management modules, staged air-conditioning starts or a service-entrance configuration. A model that appears large enough by running watts may still need controls for motor-starting surges.

Generac explains that dealer site surveys help determine placement and sizing on its home standby FAQ. Kohler similarly recommends a professional site survey and certified installation in its installation guidance. Those assessments are more dependable than selecting a model from a web calculator without seeing the electrical panel, fuel route and equipment location.

Transfer switches can change the real price
The automatic transfer switch senses a utility outage, disconnects the home from the grid and transfers the approved circuits to generator power. It is a core part of a standby system, not an optional accessory to ignore in a price comparison.
Kohler’s catalog shows why SKU-level checking matters: the 20RCA lists its transfer switch as sold separately, while the 20RCAL includes one. The 24RCLA product page also lists an included automatic transfer switch. A quote that starts with a 20RCA generator and adds a switch later is not directly comparable with a 20RCAL package.
Generac’s 24 kW standby-generator bundle is presented with transfer equipment, but confirm the current SKU, switch rating and compatibility with your service. A different Generac package may have different contents.
Ask about monitoring and controls
Generac’s 24 kW materials describe Mobile Link monitoring features. Kohler’s 24RCLA listing includes remote monitoring. Ask whether the hardware is included, how it connects at your property and whether any service or cellular subscription is recurring. Also ask whether load-management components are included or priced separately; they can affect both capacity and installation labor.
Do not assume accessories fit every model
Cold-weather block heaters, battery heaters, maintenance kits and other consumables are model-specific. Kohler’s owner-support resources provide operating and maintenance guidance, but the dealer should verify compatibility for the exact generator and climate. Do not accept a generic parts list as proof that an accessory fits your selected unit.

Warranty terms require a line-by-line check
A five-year headline can conceal different hour limits, registration rules and service obligations. Compare the written warranty for the exact model and territory, not a general sales page.
| Warranty question | Kohler information | Generac information |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Standard language describes five years or 2,000 operating hours. | Relevant models, including materials for the 24 kW product, are described with a five-year limited warranty. |
| Covered service | Warranty language describes parts, labor and travel coverage. | Coverage and conditions depend on the exact limited-warranty document and model. |
| Registration and installer | Registration by a certified installer or dealer is part of the described coverage process. | Generac describes dealer installation and activation conditions for qualification. |
| What to verify | Hour counting, exclusions, territory, required maintenance and who performs warranty work. | Exact model document, registration deadline, activation, exclusions, travel or labor limits and service territory. |
Kohler explains its standard coverage in its warranty promise. Generac’s qualification and warranty explanations appear in its FAQ and product materials. Keep the completed registration, commissioning record and maintenance invoices; those documents can matter if a claim is made.
Budget the installed project, not a generator-only price
“What is included in the installed price?” is the more useful question than “How much does a 24 kW generator cost?” The final quote can include or exclude:
- Generator and automatic transfer switch.
- Concrete or composite pad, drainage and other site preparation.
- Natural-gas line extension, regulator work or LPG tank and piping.
- Electrical conduit, disconnects, panel changes, load-management modules and labor.
- Permits, inspections, utility coordination and code-required clearances.
- Startup, commissioning, outage simulation and monitoring setup.
- Optional heaters, maintenance kits, service agreements and monitoring subscriptions.
Kohler’s purchase guidance says simple installations can start at $2,000. That is a manufacturer-published starting example, not a typical price for every home and not a substitute for a current local quote. Fuel routing, local code, placement and electrical work can make a substantial difference. Generac likewise explains on its home-generator page that installation conditions affect the project.
Request two or more proposals using the same scope. A lower generator price can disappear when a transfer switch, pad, fuel work or permit fees are added. Conversely, a higher-priced package may include equipment that another quote lists as an option. Compare the total installed amount and the scope behind it.
Plan the installation in the right order
- List critical and discretionary loads. Identify heating, cooling, pumps, refrigeration, medical equipment, internet equipment, cooking, workshop circuits and any loads you are willing to shed.
- Arrange an in-home load assessment. Have the dealer inspect the service rating, panel, conductor routes, motor loads and desired backup level. Ask for written assumptions.
- Survey fuel and location. Confirm natural-gas capacity or LPG-tank sizing, generator clearances, exhaust direction, noise-sensitive boundaries, flood or snow considerations and access for maintenance.
- Select the exact configuration. Put the model number, fuel rating, transfer switch, load controls, monitoring hardware and accessories on the proposal. Resolve differences such as Kohler 20RCA versus 20RCAL before comparing prices.
- Assign permits and utility coordination. The proposal should state who obtains permits, schedules inspections and coordinates gas and electrical work.
- Use qualified installation labor. Generac’s support article, published December 4, 2025, explains the professional and code considerations for installing a home standby generator. Kohler recommends certified installation in its installation guidance.
- Commission and test the system. Confirm fuel pressure, transfer operation, load-management behavior, monitoring connection and an outage simulation. Obtain the startup record and warranty-registration confirmation.
- Schedule maintenance. Record oil, filter, battery and inspection intervals in the handover documents and ask who provides emergency service.
Generac’s FAQ states: “Most Generac customers purchase through an authorized dealer, who will offer you a free no-obligation quote and help you choose the right generator for your needs.” Treat a free quote as the beginning of the technical assessment, not as evidence that one brand is better.

Service coverage can outweigh small specification differences
A standby generator is an installed appliance that must start after years of waiting. The dealer’s ability to inspect, maintain and repair it is therefore part of the product decision. Compare the actual company that will serve your address, not only the national brand.

Generac publishes dealer tiers describing service offerings. Ask which tier applies, whether the dealer performs scheduled maintenance, how after-hours calls are handled, what parts are stocked locally and what response time is realistic during a regional outage.
Questions for a Kohler dealer
Kohler directs owners to its owner-support resources and certified dealers. Ask the same practical questions: maintenance intervals and cost, emergency coverage, travel charges, parts availability, technician certification and the process for warranty work.
Maintenance and ownership budget
Include routine service, battery replacement, oil and filters, winter accessories where appropriate, and any monitoring or service-plan fees in your ownership budget. The maintenance schedule is model-dependent; follow the selected unit’s manual rather than applying a generic interval.

Placement can decide whether a technically suitable generator is acceptable to your household and neighbors. Compare the exact enclosure dimensions, required clearances, exhaust path, service access and published sound measurements for each candidate. Kohler’s 24RCLA page provides model-specific sound and engine specifications; those figures should not be generalized to every Kohler product or to Generac’s lineup.

Model examples that show why the details matter
Generac Guardian 24 kW
Generac presents its Guardian 24 kW product as a home standby bundle with transfer-switch and Mobile Link monitoring features, and its materials describe a five-year limited warranty. Use the current 24 kW product page and specification sheet to verify the exact fuel rating, enclosure, switch and SKU contents before accepting a quote. The 24 kW label alone does not establish equivalence with another model.
Kohler 24RCLA
Kohler lists the 24RCLA at 24 kW on LPG and 21 kW on natural gas. Its product page identifies an automatic transfer switch and remote monitoring, while the warranty information describes five years or 2,000 hours under the stated registration and installer conditions. The page also provides model-specific sound and engine information. Confirm that the fuel, switch and warranty terms in the dealer’s proposal match the current model sold in your region.
Kohler 20RCA and 20RCAL
These catalog entries are useful as a package-comparison example rather than a universal brand verdict. Kohler lists the 20RCA transfer switch separately and the 20RCAL with the switch included. Their fuel-specific ratings should be checked against the site’s gas supply and the home’s load assessment. A quote must show whether the switch is included before you compare totals.

Use this dealer-quote checklist
Ask every dealer to answer these questions in writing:
- What is the exact generator model, and what is its rated output on my available fuel?
- Which circuits are backed up, and how were running and starting loads calculated?
- Is the automatic transfer switch included? What are its amp rating and model number?
- Are load-management modules, monitoring hardware and communication costs included?
- What site preparation, clearances, pad, trenching, fuel-line or propane-tank work is required?
- Who obtains permits, coordinates inspections and handles utility or gas-company requirements?
- What are the warranty years, operating-hour limit, registration deadline, installer conditions, exclusions and travel, parts and labor coverage?
- Who performs warranty repairs, and what response time can I expect during a widespread outage?
- What maintenance is required, what does it cost, and are service agreements optional or required?
- What commissioning tests, outage simulations and handover documents are included?
- What is the total installed price, separated from optional accessories and recurring charges?
A practical decision rule
After receiving comparable quotes, select the proposal that satisfies the home’s load and fuel requirements first. If both systems pass that test, use the following tie-breakers in order:
- Included transfer switch and load-management equipment.
- Warranty coverage and conditions you can realistically satisfy.
- Dealer response, maintenance capability and parts access near the home.
- Placement, noise, climate accessories and service clearance.
- Total installed price and clearly disclosed recurring costs.
This order prevents a low upfront price or an attractive kW headline from outweighing an undersized system, missing equipment or weak local support. Recheck the current model page, warranty document and dealer credentials before signing because specifications, packaging and terms can change by model, region and date.
