A fake Geek Squad renewal notice is usually not trying to sell technical support. It is trying to make you call a scammer, surrender account details, install remote-access software, or send money. The message may claim that a Best Buy plan has renewed for hundreds of dollars and that you must call within 24 hours to cancel.

Do not use the phone number, link, or attachment in the message. A legitimate Geek Squad service can exist, so verify any real order or membership through BestBuy.com or a phone number obtained independently. Best Buy currently lists 1-888-237-8289 for general Geek Squad help and 1-800-433-5778 for computer-related assistance.

How the Geek Squad scam works

The usual version begins with an unexpected email, text message, phone call, or computer pop-up. It impersonates Geek Squad or Best Buy and may include a convincing invoice, logo, account number, or renewal amount.

The message creates urgency: call immediately, cancel within 24 hours, or prevent a charge from going through. When you call, the scammer may ask for a card number, bank details, Social Security number, password, or one-time verification code. They may also tell you to install remote-control software so they can “process a refund” or “check your computer.”

Once connected, the scammer can view the screen, access files and browser-stored passwords, install unwanted software, or display a fake refund. A common escalation is a supposed overpayment: the scammer claims to have refunded too much and demands repayment through gift cards, cryptocurrency, a wire transfer, or another difficult-to-reverse method.

Warning signs of a fake Geek Squad message

  • You did not recently buy or renew a Geek Squad service.
  • The message demands action within a short deadline.
  • It supplies a phone number and tells you to call that number to cancel.
  • A caller unexpectedly contacts you about a computer problem or refund.
  • Someone asks for a password, one-time code, Social Security number, bank information, or card number.
  • You are told to install remote-control software or share your screen.
  • You are asked to buy gift cards, send cryptocurrency, wire money, or move funds to “protect” them.
  • A pop-up claims your computer is infected and displays a support number.

The words “Geek Squad” alone do not prove that a message is fraudulent. The safe test is how you verify it: never use contact details supplied by an unexpected notice. Open BestBuy.com yourself, sign in through the official site if appropriate, or type an independently verified support number into your phone.

If you only received the email, text, or pop-up

  1. Do not call the supplied number.
  2. Do not click links or open attachments.
  3. Do not reply or provide personal, login, or payment information.
  4. Check Best Buy directly for any genuine order, plan, or charge.
  5. Review bank and credit-card accounts for unauthorized activity.
  6. Report the scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.

You generally do not need to factory-reset a computer merely because you received a scam message and did not interact with it. Delete or report the message after preserving any details needed for a report.

If you called but did not install software

Hang up and do not call back. If you gave the caller a password or typed it into a linked website, change it immediately from a different, trusted device. Change every other account using that password, because password reuse turns one disclosure into several account risks.

Review recent sign-ins, active sessions, recovery email addresses, phone numbers, and account changes. Enable multifactor authentication, preferably with an authenticator app or security key where available. If you disclosed card or bank details, contact the financial institution using the number on your card or its official website.

If you allowed remote access

Treat the computer as potentially compromised. Do not use it for online banking, shopping, email, or password entry until it has been checked.

  1. End the remote-control session. If the scammer is still operating the computer, shut it down.
  2. Disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug the Ethernet cable.
  3. Use a different, trusted device to change passwords, starting with your primary email, banking and payment accounts, Apple, Google and Microsoft accounts, and password manager.
  4. Contact banks and card issuers immediately about suspicious transactions or exposed information.
  5. Review email-forwarding rules, recovery settings, phone numbers, and active sessions.
  6. Report the incident to the FTC.

Removing the remote-access application is important, but it is not proof that the computer is clean. The scammer may have installed additional software or copied credentials while connected.

Remove suspicious software from Windows 11

Uninstall the remote-access program

  1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
  2. Find the remote-support application that the caller told you to install.
  3. Select More options (…) > Uninstall.
  4. Complete the uninstaller and restart the PC.

Do not delete an unfamiliar Windows component simply because its name looks technical. Record its name and have a trusted technician inspect it if you are unsure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run Microsoft Defender

  1. Open Windows Security.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Choose Protection updates > Check for updates.
  4. Return to Virus & threat protection and select Scan options.
  5. Choose Full scan > Scan now.
  6. Run Microsoft Defender Antivirus (offline scan) if the scammer controlled the computer, malware remains, or Defender reports a serious threat.

Save your work before an offline scan. It restarts the PC and scans from the Windows Recovery Environment, which can make it harder for persistent malware to hide.

Check browser extensions

In Chrome, open More (…) > Extensions > Manage extensions. Select Remove on any extension you do not recognize, then confirm.

In Edge, open Extensions > Manage extensions. On the suspicious extension, select Remove > Remove from Microsoft Edge > Remove.

If Chrome settings changed, use More (…) > Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults > Reset settings. Chrome says this resets settings such as the search engine, homepage, startup tabs, cookies, extensions, and themes while leaving saved bookmarks and passwords unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If an Edge extension says it is “managed by your organization” on a personal computer, scan for malware before following registry-edit instructions found online. On a work or school device, ask the organization’s IT department because the policy may be legitimate.

Remove suspicious software from a Mac

  1. Quit the suspicious application.
  2. Open Finder > Applications.
  3. If the app has an Uninstall program, run it. This is preferable because it may remove related login items, extensions, and files.
  4. If there is no uninstaller, select the app and choose File > Move to Trash, or drag it to the Trash.
  5. Empty the Trash only after confirming that the app and related files are unwanted.

Do not use System Settings > Privacy & Security > Open Anyway to bypass a macOS warning for software supplied by an unsolicited caller. Gatekeeper and XProtect help block or detect known threats, but they do not undo exposed passwords or prove that a remotely accessed Mac is safe.

Recover accounts after remote access

Change credentials from a clean device, beginning with email. Someone controlling email may be able to reset passwords for banking, shopping, and other services. Use unique passwords and enable multifactor authentication.

What to do if you lost money or personal information

What you gave away Immediate action
Credit or debit card Call the issuer, report fraud, and ask whether the transaction can be reversed.
Bank transfer Call the bank’s fraud department and ask whether the transfer can be stopped or reversed.
Gift card Contact the gift-card company immediately. Keep the card and receipt.
Wire transfer or money-transfer app Contact the provider and request cancellation or reversal.
Username and password Change the password and every reused version from a clean device.
Social Security number or identity details Use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery steps and credit guidance.
Phone number or mobile account Contact your carrier to regain control, then change passwords and inspect financial accounts.

Speed matters. Contact the company that moved the money as soon as possible; recovery is harder once gift cards, wires, and transfers have been redeemed or withdrawn.

When a Windows reset is appropriate

A reset is not automatically necessary after a scam email or a brief call. Consider one if malware persists, security tools are disabled, the attacker created accounts or startup items, or you cannot establish that the system is clean after removal and scans.

On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. Keep my files preserves personal files but removes apps and settings. Remove everything removes personal files, apps, and settings. Cloud download downloads a fresh Windows copy, while Local reinstall uses files already on the PC.

Back up important files first and make sure you have the BitLocker recovery key if device encryption is enabled. If infection is suspected and a normal reset does not resolve it, a Windows reinstall from installation media is more thorough. Have a trusted technician help if you are unsure what to preserve.

Claims about Geek Squad scams that are wrong

Claim What is actually true
“The invoice proves the renewal is real.” Scammers routinely create convincing invoices and renewal notices. Verify through Best Buy independently.
“I should call to cancel within 24 hours.” The deadline is pressure designed to stop you from checking the claim.
“The refund shown on my screen proves the caller is legitimate.” Remote access lets a scammer fabricate on-screen activity, including an apparent overpayment.
“Uninstalling the support app completes cleanup.” You still need password changes, financial-account checks, and security scans.
“Every recipient must factory-reset their computer.” A reset is unnecessary if you only received the message. It becomes a consideration when access, installation, or persistent malware is involved.
“Every Geek Squad charge is fraudulent.” Best Buy offers legitimate Geek Squad services. Verify the specific charge through official channels.

FAQ

Is a Geek Squad renewal email always a scam?

Not every Geek Squad charge is fraudulent because Best Buy offers legitimate services. However, an unexpected renewal notice that pressures you to call a supplied number is a strong scam warning. Verify the charge through BestBuy.com or an independently obtained Best Buy number.

What should I do if I gave a Geek Squad scammer remote access?

Disconnect the computer from the internet, end the session or shut down the device, and stop using it for banking or passwords. From a clean device, change email, financial, and other important passwords, contact your financial institutions, review account sessions, and scan or professionally inspect the computer.

Do I need to reset my computer after receiving a fake Geek Squad message?

No, not if you only received the message and did not click, call, install software, or share information. If someone accessed the computer or malware persists after removal and scans, consider a Windows reset or a more thorough reinstall.

Can a Geek Squad scammer reverse a refund or charge with gift cards?

No legitimate support representative should require gift cards to repay a refund or settle a technical-support charge. If you paid with gift cards, contact the card company immediately, keep the cards and receipt, and report the fraud.

The Bottom Line

Do not call the number in an unexpected Geek Squad message. Verify through Best Buy independently. If you only received the message, report and delete it. If you shared credentials, changed passwords from a clean device; if you allowed remote access, disconnect the computer, contact your financial institutions, scan or reset the device as needed, and act quickly on any payment.
