Neither gasoline nor diesel is always cheaper. Diesel vehicles generally return somewhat higher fuel economy, but the lower fuel bill—if there is one—depends on your local prices, the exact vehicles being compared, your city/highway mix and annual mileage. A diesel can use fewer gallons yet cost more per mile if diesel fuel is sufficiently more expensive or the vehicle costs more to buy and maintain.
Compare specific gasoline and diesel vehicles on cost per mile first, then add purchase and ownership costs. Fuel types are not interchangeable: the engine and the manufacturer’s manual determine what belongs in the tank.

Why there is no universal cheaper fuel
A fuel-type label is too broad to answer a cost question. A compact gasoline car and a heavy diesel pickup have different weights, engines, aerodynamic loads and intended work. Even two vehicles in the same class can have different city and highway ratings. Treat “gas versus diesel” as a comparison between two named vehicles, not as a permanent rule about fuels.
The main variables are:
- Local pump prices: gasoline and diesel prices vary by location and change over time.
- Vehicle-specific economy: use the published value for the exact model, engine, drivetrain and model year. Your own records are preferable once you have them.
- Driving pattern: annual distance and the proportion of city and highway driving can materially change fuel use.
- Vehicle cost: purchase price and relevant maintenance or repair costs can outweigh fuel savings.
- Use case: vehicle class, towing or hauling demands, age and condition can explain cost differences that have nothing to do with the fuel itself.
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) describes diesel and biodiesel vehicles as generally having slightly higher fuel economy than gasoline vehicles, partly because those fuels are more energy-dense. “Slightly higher” is a fleet-level qualification, not a promise that every diesel beats every gasoline model.

Calculate fuel cost per mile before making a claim
The basic comparison is simple:
fuel cost per mile = fuel price per gallon ÷ vehicle miles per gallon
For an annual estimate:
annual fuel cost = annual miles × fuel price per gallon ÷ miles per gallon
Use the same annual mileage for both vehicles. If your route is mixed, calculate city and highway consumption separately or use a weighted value that matches your actual route. A vehicle driven mostly in traffic should not be evaluated with its highway rating alone.

A transparent comparison procedure
- Name the candidates precisely. Record make, model, model year, engine, transmission and drivetrain. Note whether either vehicle is a different size, age or condition.
- Collect current local prices. Enter the price you actually face for the required grade of gasoline and for diesel. Fuel prices are volatile, so a national or historical average may not represent your station.
- Set your driving distance. Use an annual odometer estimate, commuting records or another defensible number. Keep the distance identical for both vehicles.
- Describe the route. Record the city/highway share and any recurring towing, hauling, idling or short-trip use that could make the published rating less representative.
- Enter model-specific economy. Prefer official published values for the exact configuration. Replace them with your own measured records when you have enough consistent data.
- Compute gallons and dollars. Divide annual miles by MPG to estimate gallons, then multiply by the corresponding local price.
- Add ownership costs. Compare purchase price and the maintenance or other vehicle costs that are relevant to these particular models.
The DOE/Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) Vehicle Cost Calculator is designed for this screening exercise. It accepts distance, days and weeks driven, highway share, fuel prices and fuel economy; it also allows custom vehicle inputs and comparisons of up to eight vehicles. Its methodology describes the result as a high-level estimate, not a guarantee of an individual driver’s costs. Enter your own prices and driving habits rather than accepting a default that does not fit your situation.
What diesel’s efficiency advantage does—and does not—tell you
Diesel’s higher energy density can help a diesel vehicle travel farther on a gallon. That reduces gallons consumed, but the dollar result still depends on the price of that gallon. If diesel costs substantially more locally, a gasoline vehicle with lower MPG can still have the lower fuel cost per mile.
An older DOE technical primer cited a broad historical estimate of 20% to 50% higher fuel economy for diesel vehicles versus comparable gasoline vehicles. That estimate is more than a decade old and should not be generalized to current models. Current DOE fleet guidance uses the more cautious “slightly higher” description. For a purchase decision, use the exact vehicles’ published or observed figures instead of a historic range.

Fuel prices: use current local inputs, not old headlines
No current national gasoline-versus-diesel retail comparison establishes a universal winner. Prices differ by region, tax structure, season and station, and they can change faster than a vehicle-buying decision.
A DOE fact sheet for model-year 2022 used $4.18 per gallon for regular gasoline and $5.51 per gallon for diesel in an estimated annual-fuel-cost scenario. The assumptions were 15,000 miles per year and 55% city/45% highway driving. Those figures are historical assumptions for that analysis, not current prices and not a general result for every vehicle. They are useful only as an example of why the price spread must be stated alongside the mileage and driving pattern.
When prices move, recalculate. A diesel’s MPG advantage does not change your local price at the pump, and a small price change can alter a close comparison. If you are uncertain about future prices, run a low, middle and high price scenario rather than presenting one forecast as fact.
Total ownership cost can reverse the fuel result
Fuel is only one line in the ownership decision. Start with the purchase-price difference between the two candidates. Then identify the costs that apply to those exact vehicles and their intended work. A diesel’s fuel savings must first recover any higher upfront cost before it becomes a financial advantage.
Purchase price and financing
Use transaction prices for comparable condition and equipment, not a generic “diesel premium.” If one candidate is newer, larger or equipped for heavier work, separate that value difference from the effect of fuel type. Include the financing impact of a higher purchase price when you are comparing monthly affordability.

Maintenance and emissions equipment
Many diesel vehicles use additional emissions-aftertreatment components. Those systems are part of the vehicle’s design and should be considered when you review the maintenance schedule, warranty and repair exposure for the specific model. No single maintenance cost applies to all diesel vehicles, so do not use a blanket diesel surcharge or assume identical service needs.
Gasoline vehicles also differ in required service and fuel grade. Read the maintenance schedule and owner’s manual for each candidate, and obtain model-specific service estimates if a repair or warranty decision is important to your budget.
Break-even analysis
A break-even mileage can be calculated only after you have a named pair and declared assumptions:
break-even miles = (diesel purchase and ownership premium) ÷ (gasoline cost per mile − diesel cost per mile)
The denominator must be positive for a diesel to recover a higher initial cost through fuel savings. If the diesel’s cost per mile is not lower, there is no fuel-only break-even point under those assumptions. Because prices, MPG and maintenance vary, there is no current general break-even mileage that can be applied to every buyer.
Gasoline and diesel engines require different fuel
Fuel compatibility is a mechanical requirement, not a preference. AFDC explains that most gasoline engines are spark-ignited while diesel engines are compression-ignited. Its technical explainer states: “One difference is that diesel engines have a compression-ignited injection system rather than the spark-ignited system used by most gasoline vehicles.” The engine, fuel system and emissions controls are designed around that distinction.

If gasoline is put in a diesel vehicle
- Do not start the engine or turn the ignition on if you realize the mistake before driving.
- Move the vehicle only as instructed by the manufacturer or roadside provider; avoid circulating the wrong fuel through the system.
- Call the vehicle manufacturer, roadside assistance or a qualified service facility and explain exactly what was added and whether the engine was started.
- Keep receipts and document the fuel, quantity and timing for the service technician and any warranty discussion.
If diesel is put in a gasoline vehicle
- Stop using the vehicle as soon as it is safe. If the engine has not been started, leave it off.
- Consult the owner’s manual and a qualified service provider for the correct draining and inspection procedure.
- Do not assume that adding the correct fuel will solve the problem; the appropriate response depends on how much wrong fuel entered the system and whether it circulated.
These are general safety steps, not a substitute for the manual or professional diagnosis. Never deliberately test fuel interchangeability, and do not infer compatibility from a vehicle’s exterior badge.
Biodiesel blends require a separate compatibility check
Biodiesel is not a universal exception to the owner’s-manual rule. AFDC says B5 (a blend containing up to 5% biodiesel) is approved for all diesel vehicles. Many original-equipment manufacturers approve B20, a blend containing up to 20% biodiesel, but approval is not universal for every model, year or warranty.
Before using a blend above B5:
- Check the fuel cap, owner’s manual and warranty documentation for the permitted blend.
- Confirm that the station’s labeled blend matches the approved maximum.
- Ask the manufacturer or an authorized service provider when the documentation is unclear.
- Do not assume that approval for one model year carries over to another.
Higher blends can therefore change the compatibility and warranty analysis even when the vehicle is unquestionably a diesel.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Gasoline grade matters, too
“Gasoline” does not identify a single octane requirement. The manual and fuel-door label specify whether regular, midgrade or premium is required or recommended for a particular engine. DOE reported that among model-year 2023 light-duty vehicle configurations, 26.7% required premium gasoline and 26.3% recommended premium gasoline. Those figures concern gasoline octane recommendations; they do not make gasoline suitable for a diesel engine.
Include the required or recommended grade in your cost-per-mile calculation. A gasoline vehicle that appears cheaper using regular-gasoline pricing may have a different result if its manufacturer requires premium. If premium is merely recommended, follow the manual’s guidance and state the assumption you use.

- Model year, body style, engine output and drivetrain.
- Purchase price, mileage, condition and included equipment.
- Fuel required, fuel grade and any permitted biodiesel blend.
- Published city, highway and combined MPG for that exact configuration.
- Your annual miles and city/highway percentage.
- Current local price per gallon for the required fuel and grade.
- Expected maintenance schedule and any model-specific aftertreatment service considerations.
- Towing, payload, idling, short-trip or terrain demands that affect real use.
- Warranty terms governing fuel, emissions equipment and approved blends.
Run the same assumptions through the DOE/AFDC calculator or a spreadsheet. Then change one assumption at a time—fuel price, annual miles, route mix or observed MPG—to see which factor controls the result. Keep a written record of each scenario so a favorable result is not accidentally based on different assumptions for each vehicle.
When each fuel type can fit the budget
A diesel may fit when
- The specific diesel has a meaningful MPG advantage in your driving pattern.
- Your annual mileage is high enough for fuel savings to matter.
- Local diesel pricing does not erase the efficiency benefit.
- The vehicle’s purchase price, maintenance requirements and aftertreatment considerations fit your budget.
- You need the vehicle class or workload represented by that diesel model.
These are conditions to test, not promises of a diesel saving. A high-mileage driver can still lose money if the price premium and cost per mile do not work.
A gasoline vehicle may fit when
- The gasoline candidate has a lower purchase price or lower relevant ownership cost.
- Local gasoline pricing produces a lower cost per mile despite lower MPG.
- Your annual mileage is modest, so fuel savings have little opportunity to recover a higher upfront cost.
- The gasoline model matches your size and workload without paying for capability you will not use.
- Its required fuel grade is included honestly in the calculation.
The correct conclusion comes from the complete comparison, not from assuming that either fuel is inherently cheaper.

- Comparing MPG without prices: Convert both vehicles to dollars per mile.
- Using different mileage assumptions: Hold annual miles and route mix constant.
- Using a national default: Enter current prices at the stations you use.
- Mixing vehicle classes: State differences in size, age, condition and workload instead of attributing every result to fuel.
- Applying an old diesel percentage: Use exact model data; the historical 20%–50% estimate is not a current universal rule.
- Ignoring fuel grade: Include premium gasoline when the manual requires or recommends it.
- Assuming diesel blends are interchangeable: Verify B5, B20 or higher-blend approval for the specific vehicle and warranty.
- Calling a calculator output a guarantee: Treat it as a high-level screening estimate and update it with your own records.
- Forgetting the purchase-price gap: Calculate whether any annual fuel saving can recover the extra upfront cost.
- Treating fuel as interchangeable: Follow the engine manufacturer’s instructions; misfueling requires prompt professional guidance.
How to state your decision clearly
A defensible conclusion names the vehicles, location, date of fuel prices, annual mileage, route mix, MPG source and ownership assumptions. For example, report the calculated fuel cost per mile for each candidate, the annual difference, the purchase-price difference and the assumptions that could change the ranking. If you do not have current local prices or a named vehicle pair, the honest answer is that no numerical winner or break-even mileage has been established.
Recheck the calculation when you change vehicles, move to a different fuel market, alter your commute or learn your real-world MPG. Fuel prices and operating conditions change; a comparison is useful only while its inputs remain relevant.
