There is no universally cheaper fuel. Diesel usually delivers more miles per gallon because it contains more energy per gallon, but diesel at the pump can cost enough more to erase that advantage. The dependable way to choose is to compare the exact gasoline and diesel vehicles you could buy, using your local prices, each vehicle’s official combined fuel-economy rating, your annual mileage and driving mix, and the vehicles’ purchase and ownership costs.
As dated context, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) displayed August 31, 2026 U.S. averages of $4.071 per gallon for regular gasoline and $5.599 for on-highway diesel, including taxes. Those figures are not a current quote for every location; fuel prices change daily and vary substantially by state, city and station.

Is diesel cheaper than gas?
Sometimes, but not by default. A diesel vehicle wins on fuel cost only when its efficiency advantage is large enough to overcome diesel’s higher local price. A gasoline vehicle can cost less per mile even when its advertised miles-per-gallon number is lower.

Fuel price per gallon is only one input. The relevant measure is dollars per mile (or dollars per 100 miles), calculated for the specific vehicles and conditions you expect to use. A diesel purchase can also involve a different transaction price, financing cost, maintenance pattern, insurance premium and resale value. Those costs may matter more than a small fuel difference.

The EIA’s historical comparison illustrates why broad rules fail: in a 2014 analysis, a midsize diesel used about 10 fewer gallons per year than a standard gasoline counterpart at 12,000 miles, yet cost about $25 more annually to fuel under the analysis’s $3.75-per-gallon diesel assumption. That is a dated illustration, not evidence of what a modern vehicle will cost in your market.
Calculate fuel cost per mile
The basic equation
For each candidate vehicle, use:
fuel cost per mile = local price per gallon ÷ combined MPG
For a fixed distance, use:
fuel cost = (miles driven ÷ MPG) × price per gallon
EPA labels provide a combined city/highway MPG rating and gallons per 100 miles. The combined figure is a consistent starting point for comparing vehicles, but EPA says label estimates are based on assumptions and your actual mileage will vary with speed, weather, cargo, tire pressure, traffic and driving style.
Worked example using the dated EIA averages
Suppose a gasoline vehicle is rated at 28 combined MPG and a comparable diesel is rated at 35 combined MPG. Applying the EIA figures displayed for August 31, 2026 gives this fuel-only comparison:
| Measure | Gasoline vehicle | Diesel vehicle |
|---|---|---|
| Price used | $4.071/gal regular gasoline | $5.599/gal on-highway diesel |
| Combined rating | 28 MPG | 35 MPG |
| Gallons per mile | 1 ÷ 28 | 1 ÷ 35 |
| Fuel cost per mile | About $0.145 | About $0.160 |
| Fuel cost for 12,000 miles | About $1,745 | About $1,920 |
| Fuel cost for 15,000 miles | About $2,181 | About $2,400 |
With those inputs, the diesel uses fewer gallons but costs roughly $175 more per 12,000 miles because its price premium is larger than its MPG advantage. Replace both prices with what you actually pay before drawing a conclusion.

Find the diesel MPG needed to break even
To find the diesel efficiency required to match a gasoline vehicle’s fuel cost, multiply the gasoline vehicle’s MPG by the diesel-to-gasoline price ratio:
break-even diesel MPG = gasoline MPG × (diesel price ÷ gasoline price)
Using $5.599 diesel, $4.071 gasoline and a 28-MPG gasoline vehicle:
28 × (5.599 ÷ 4.071) = about 38.5 MPG
The diesel would need to average about 38.5 MPG to tie the 28-MPG gasoline vehicle on fuel alone at those dated prices. If the diesel is rated at 40 MPG, it would be slightly cheaper per mile; if it is rated at 35 MPG, it would be more expensive. This break-even calculation changes whenever prices or vehicle ratings change.
Use the same assumptions for both vehicles
An apples-to-apples comparison requires identical usage assumptions. Changing the mileage or ownership period for one vehicle can make any result meaningless.

| Other ownership costs | Estimate insurance, scheduled service, repairs, registration and likely resale value for each named vehicle. |
City and highway driving
Do not substitute a diesel’s highway MPG for a gasoline vehicle’s combined MPG. Use comparable ratings or a driving-pattern-aware estimate. The U.S. Department of Energy’s vehicle-cost tool accepts daily mileage and the share of highway driving, allowing the estimate to reflect your routine rather than an arbitrary 50/50 split.

For a hand calculation, estimate gallons for each part of the route separately:
annual fuel cost = [(city miles ÷ city MPG) + (highway miles ÷ highway MPG)] × price per gallon
If you do not have reliable city and highway figures for both vehicles, use the official combined ratings for both and label the result as an estimate.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes diesel as having “more energy per gallon of fuel than gasoline (generally resulting in higher fuel economy).” The same EPA comparison says diesel “contains more carbon per gallon (generally resulting in more CO2 emissions per gallon).” Higher MPG therefore does not automatically mean lower fuel spending or lower emissions for your particular vehicle.
Fuel economy also depends on vehicle mass, aerodynamics, gearing, drivetrain losses, engine calibration, tires, temperature, payload and route. Compare the ratings of the actual vehicles rather than assuming every diesel has a fixed percentage advantage over every gasoline model.

|---|---|---|
| Regular gasoline | $4.071/gal | August 31, 2026; taxes included |
| On-highway diesel | $5.599/gal | August 31, 2026; taxes included |
Taxes explain part of the spread but do not determine which vehicle is cheaper. EIA’s January 2026 figures list federal taxes and fees of 18.40 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.40 cents for diesel. Average state taxes were 33.27 cents for gasoline and 35.50 cents for diesel; those state averages exclude county and local taxes.

Purchase price and financing
A diesel version can have a different purchase price from a gasoline version, even when the body and equipment appear similar. Add the actual negotiated price, destination and required fees, then account for the interest paid over the loan. A fuel saving of a few cents per mile may not recover a large upfront or financing difference during a short ownership period.
Use the same cash-versus-financing assumption for both vehicles. If one option requires a larger down payment or carries a different interest rate, show that separately rather than hiding it in the fuel calculation.
Maintenance and repairs
Do not apply a universal “diesel maintenance premium” or a fixed break-even mileage. Costs vary by engine, emissions equipment, service schedule, parts prices, labor rates and how the vehicle is used. Obtain the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and local service estimates for the exact models.
Separate predictable scheduled service from uncertain repairs. A spreadsheet can include an annual service budget, a reserve for out-of-warranty repairs and the timing of major scheduled work. Keep the assumptions visible so you can change them when a dealer or independent shop gives you a firm quote.

Insurance, registration and resale
Request insurance quotes using the vehicle identification details or exact trims; premiums can differ even when fuel economy is similar. Registration and local fees may also depend on vehicle value or weight. For resale, use evidence for the named models and your expected selling date. The available evidence does not establish a universal diesel resale advantage or disadvantage.
Emissions and nonfinancial priorities
Fuel cost is only one decision criterion. EPA’s fuel comparison notes diesel’s higher carbon content per gallon, while modern vehicles use emissions-control systems that differ by model and generation. If emissions, towing capability, payload, noise or access to fueling stations matters to you, list those requirements alongside the dollar calculation instead of treating MPG as the sole objective.
Step-by-step method for your own comparison
- Choose a specific pair. Write down model year, trim, engine, transmission and drivetrain for the gasoline and diesel vehicles you would actually buy. Do not compare a base gasoline model with a heavier, more powerful diesel without recording those differences.
- Collect current local prices. Record the regular gasoline and on-highway diesel prices at stations you can realistically use. Note the location and date.
- Record official efficiency data. Enter each vehicle’s EPA combined MPG and, if available, city and highway ratings. Also record gallons per 100 miles from the label; lower gallons per 100 miles means better efficiency.
- Set one mileage assumption. Use your expected annual miles and multiply by the same ownership period for both vehicles. Include vacations, seasonal work and towing miles if they are recurring rather than exceptional.
- Calculate fuel spending. Divide price by MPG for cost per mile, then multiply by annual or total miles. For mixed driving, calculate city and highway gallons separately.
- Price the transaction. Add purchase price, taxes, fees, financing interest and any required equipment. Keep rebates and promotions tied to their expiration date and eligibility.
- Estimate nonfuel costs. Obtain insurance quotes and maintenance schedules, then make model-specific estimates for repairs, registration and resale.
- Run scenarios. Test lower and higher fuel prices, a realistic MPG range and shorter or longer ownership. A conclusion that changes with a small assumption is a close call, not a dependable fuel advantage.
- Check the result independently. The DOE Vehicle Cost Calculator can compare model costs and emissions using driving habits. DOE warns that vehicle prices and specifications change frequently and that some data may not have been verified by DOE or the National Laboratory of the Rockies. Confirm current specifications and buyer-specific costs with the manufacturer, dealer, insurer and service provider.
How driving patterns change the answer
Low-mileage ownership
If you drive only a few thousand miles per year or replace the vehicle quickly, fuel savings have little time to offset a purchase-price or financing difference. Calculate total dollars saved over your actual ownership miles rather than using a lifetime estimate.

At high annual mileage, a small cost-per-mile difference compounds. Multiply the difference by your expected miles and test several fuel-price assumptions. Even then, include service, insurance and resale rather than declaring a winner from MPG alone.
Mostly highway travel
Highway-heavy drivers should compare highway and combined ratings consistently. A vehicle that looks similar in combined MPG may separate on your route, while traffic, speed and load can reduce the advantage shown on the label.
Short trips and variable use
Frequent short trips, idling, winter temperatures, heavy cargo and stop-and-go traffic can move real-world consumption away from label estimates. If your use is unusually severe, use conservative MPG assumptions for both vehicles and document why.
Common mistakes that produce the wrong winner
- Comparing pump prices only: A cheaper gallon does not mean a cheaper mile.
- Using advertised highway MPG for one vehicle and combined MPG for the other: Match the measurement basis.
- Mixing dates or locations: Record both fuel prices from the same market and period.
- Ignoring purchase cost: A fuel advantage may never repay a large upfront difference during your ownership.
- Assuming a fixed diesel premium: Maintenance and repair costs are model-specific; obtain actual schedules and quotes.
- Using one optimistic MPG number: Test a range that reflects your route, weather, load and driving style.
- Treating a national average as your price: EIA averages are context, not a station quote.
- Relying on an old comparison: The 2014 EIA illustration helps explain the method but does not represent current vehicles or prices.
- Counting only fuel: Insurance, financing, registration, repairs and resale can reverse a fuel-only result.
A practical decision rule
Choose diesel when a specific diesel model’s calculated fuel savings, together with its purchase and ownership assumptions, outweigh its added costs over your planned miles—and when its capabilities and fueling availability fit your use. Choose gasoline when the diesel’s higher price, financing, service assumptions or limited fuel savings leave the gasoline vehicle cheaper for the same job.
When the totals are close, prefer the option with assumptions you can verify: a firm transaction price, dependable service access, realistic insurance quote and a driving pattern that matches the rating. Recalculate whenever fuel prices, vehicle prices or your annual mileage changes.
