Short answer: GasBuddy is the clearest dedicated price-search option for drivers in the United States and Canada, while Google Maps and Waze are more convenient when you are already planning a route. Australian drivers have regulator-documented options in MotorMouth and PetrolSpy. In the UK, Google Maps and Waze now incorporate government Fuel Finder prices. None can be called universally “most accurate” from the available evidence: prices differ by country, fuel grade, station coverage, update speed and data source.
Choose an app by checking four things at the same time: where its prices come from and when they were updated, whether it covers the stations and fuel you need, whether savings require a card or other conditions, and what location data the service collects.

How each app gets its prices
GasBuddy: broad U.S. and Canadian search with community reports
GasBuddy’s current Google Play listing says drivers can report prices and sort stations by price, location, fuel type or amenities. It also advertises road-trip mapping, rewards, Flash Deals and an optional Pay with GasBuddy+ card. The listing expressly describes price availability in the United States and Canada, so do not assume the same database works in other countries.

Community reporting can make a station visible quickly, but a report is not the same as a verified, government feed. Before detouring, check the displayed time or freshness indicator when available, compare nearby stations and confirm the fuel grade. GasBuddy’s listing also claims more than 100 million downloads; that is a platform-listing claim rather than an independent usage count.
Google Maps and Waze: convenient, but market-dependent
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) guide says Google Maps can show fuel prices in search results and on a selected station listing. It notes when a displayed price is more than 24 hours old. The same guide says Waze can show petrol stations and prices along a route and let users filter by fuel type or brand. When the ACCC prepared that 2024 guide, it could not confirm the source of prices shown in either app in Australia. That historical finding is a reason to check timestamps and local coverage, not proof that today’s UK feed has the same uncertainty.
For the UK, a TechRadar report dated October 8, 2026 said Google Maps and Waze had begun displaying prices sourced from the government’s Fuel Finder service. The report said forecourts must add changed prices to the database within 30 minutes. It also attributed a qualification to Sarah-Jayne Williams, Google Maps and Waze’s director of product partnerships, quoted by the BBC: “Accuracy is very important, so we will still show the petrol station and where it is, but you’ll only see a price if we have high confidence that it’s the right price.” The same report described potential savings of £40 a year as a government estimate, not a guarantee for every driver.

Australian specialist options
The ACCC’s 2024 consumer guide describes MotorMouth as a free service covering Australian jurisdictions. It uses colour-coded relative prices, price charts and guidance about local price cycles. PetrolSpy is also described as free, using government transparency-scheme data in most jurisdictions and manually entered crowdsourced data in Victoria; its list view can sort by proximity or price.
Brand-specific retailer apps can show a price for their own branded sites, but the ACCC warns that this may not cover competing stations. Recheck current coverage, update timing and fuel-grade filters because the guide is dated and app features can change.
What about cashback apps?
A secondary comparison from Tom’s Guide mentioned Upside as a fuel, grocery and restaurant cashback option. The evidence available here does not establish its current offer conditions, countries, redemption process, fees or partner availability. Treat it as a possible lead only after reading the service’s current official terms; do not equate cashback with a lower pump price.

- An additional 3 cents per gallon after $25 in convenience-store purchases.
- A $120 daily Auto-Pay limit and a $400 weekly Auto-Pay limit.
These are terms shown on that dated help page, not a permanent promise or a complete fee schedule. Fuel savings apply only to Auto-Pay cardholders. Manual weekly bill pay has different spending limits and no stated fuel savings, and premium members cannot use Manual Bill Pay. Check the current in-app terms before linking a payment method.
GasBuddy Flash Deals terms dated March 3, 2026
GasBuddy’s March 3, 2026 help page says most users can activate Flash Deals for up to 250 points per gallon after uploading a receipt. Pay with GasBuddy+ members may instead receive an offer as cents-per-gallon savings, up to a stated 33 cents per gallon. The page says offers can vary by account. A maximum is therefore not a typical saving: activation, a qualifying payment method, receipt submission and account eligibility can all determine what you actually receive.

How to compare a discount with an ordinary station
- Record the displayed pump price for the exact fuel grade.
- Read whether the app’s amount is a price reduction, points balance, cashback or payment-card benefit.
- Include any membership, card, activation, receipt-upload or spending requirement.
- Add the cost of a detour and account for the possibility that the displayed price is stale.
- Compare the final cost per gallon or litre, not the largest promotional number.
A practical workflow for finding the cheapest usable station
- Set your country and fuel grade. Coverage differs sharply: GasBuddy’s listing is for the United States and Canada, the ACCC findings concern Australia, and the Fuel Finder integration described here concerns the UK.
- Search while stopped or before leaving. Enter a destination, then search for fuel. In Waze, use the route view and available fuel-type or brand filters. In Google Maps, inspect both the result card and the station’s full listing.
- Sort for the decision you actually face. Cheapest nearby is useful for a local fill; cheapest along the route may avoid a backtrack. A station with the lowest posted price can cost more after a long detour.
- Check freshness. Look for a timestamp or stale-price warning. In the ACCC’s description of Google Maps, prices more than 24 hours old are flagged. In community-report systems, compare multiple nearby entries.
- Verify the station and fuel. Confirm that the station is open, sells your fuel grade and accepts the payment method required for any discount.
- Save evidence for conditional offers. If a deal requires activation or a receipt, activate it before fueling and keep the receipt until points or cashback appear.
Privacy: what the controls really do
GasBuddy’s disclosed collection
GasBuddy’s location collection and sharing disclosure, last updated September 9, 2026, says enabled tracking may include real-time location collection when the app is not open or in use, depending on device settings. It lists location, device identifiers, timestamps, inferred behavioral patterns and sensor data among information it may collect. The stated uses include nearby prices, analytics, location-based deals and advertising; listed recipients include advertising networks or affiliates and data brokers.
The disclosure describes changing device permissions and opting out of sale or sharing, while warning that disabling location collection affects location-based features. Google Play’s GasBuddy data-safety panel likewise says the app may collect and share location, personal information and device or other IDs, encrypts data in transit and allows deletion requests. Google Play notes that practices can vary by use, region and age and that the information is supplied by the developer.
Waze’s Invisible Mode is not a no-collection switch
Waze’s privacy policy says information may be linked to a non-registered account and unique identifier even when a person does not actively register. Its settings can adjust some collection and uses. Waze also says it may share de-identified account settings and location or route-related data with Google affiliates to develop or improve mapping and navigation.

Invisible Mode hides your location from other map users. It does not stop Waze from collecting location and route information. Use device-level location controls when you need to stop background access, and expect some navigation features to stop working.
Privacy checks for any navigation app
- Choose “while using the app” rather than continuous background access when navigation does not require it.
- Review precise-location, location-history and advertising-personalisation settings separately; one switch may not control all three.
- Disable contact, microphone or motion permissions that are not needed for fuel searching.
- Read the current privacy notice for your country before joining rewards or linking a payment card.
- Delete the account or request data deletion when you stop using the service, then remove the app’s permissions.
Common pitfalls and fixes
Assuming the cheapest number is current
Prices can change between a report and your arrival. Prefer a recently timestamped listing, compare two sources and call the station when the difference matters.
Confusing points with money off
Points, cashback and cents-per-gallon discounts have different redemption rules. Calculate the value only after checking expiry, minimum redemption, eligible stations and payment requirements.
Assuming one country’s coverage applies elsewhere
GasBuddy’s stated price coverage is the United States and Canada. MotorMouth and PetrolSpy evidence is Australian. The Fuel Finder integration described by TechRadar is UK-specific. Install or select a service that explicitly covers your country.
Treating privacy mode as complete anonymity
Invisible Mode in Waze changes what other map users see, not what the service collects. GasBuddy’s background-location disclosure similarly means that closing the app may not end collection if permissions allow it.
Which app should you choose?
- U.S. or Canadian driver focused on price search: Start with GasBuddy, then verify the report’s age and fuel grade before detouring. Consider Auto-Pay or Flash Deals only if their conditions fit your spending and privacy preferences.
- Driver already navigating: Google Maps or Waze minimizes app switching. In the UK, Fuel Finder integration adds a government-reported source; in Australia, check the timestamp and remember the ACCC’s source uncertainty finding dates from 2024.
- Australian driver comparing local prices: Try MotorMouth for charts and price-cycle context or PetrolSpy for proximity/price sorting, then confirm current coverage and privacy terms.
- Privacy-sensitive driver: Use the least-permissive location setting that still supports your trip, avoid unnecessary account or payment linking, and understand that hiding your location from other users is different from stopping collection.
No reviewed source establishes a universal accuracy winner or guarantees a particular annual saving. The best choice is the app whose price source, freshness, station coverage, discount conditions and data practices match your trip and your tolerance for sharing location information.
