FxPro vs. Swissquote: Which Broker Is Better?

FxPro is mainly a forex and CFD broker, while Swissquote is a broader multi-asset investment platform. Compare their products, costs, platforms and risks before choosing.

FxPro and Swissquote serve different primary purposes. FxPro is mainly a forex and CFD broker for leveraged trading. Swissquote is a broader financial institution offering forex and CFDs alongside shares, ETFs, bonds, funds, crypto and banking-related services in some markets.

That distinction matters more than a small difference in advertised spreads. If you want to trade currency movements or indices actively, FxPro may be the more natural fit. If you want to build a long-term portfolio of investments you actually own, Swissquote is usually the stronger candidate.

Neither broker is automatically suitable for every investor. Your country of residence determines which legal entity accepts your account, what leverage is available, how your money is protected and which products you can trade.

FxPro vs. Swissquote: quick comparison

Category FxPro Swissquote
Main use Forex and CFD trading Multi-asset investing, forex and CFDs
Best suited to Active traders and platform-focused CFD users Investors who want shares, ETFs and other securities as well as trading products
Physical stocks and ETFs Generally not the core offering; check your local entity Available through eligible Swissquote securities accounts, subject to market and residence restrictions
Trading platforms Typically MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader and FxPro’s own platform, depending on jurisdiction Swissquote’s proprietary platform and commonly MetaTrader 4 or 5 for eligible FX/CFD accounts
Pricing structure May include spread-only and commission-based account options Varies by product, market, account and legal entity; securities trades generally use commissions and other market charges
Leverage Depends on regulator, client classification and instrument Depends on regulator, account type, instrument and client classification
Banking services Not its primary proposition Available in some jurisdictions through Swissquote banking entities

This table is a starting point, not a price quote. Brokers can change spreads, commissions, minimums and platform availability. Before opening an account, select your country on each broker’s website and read the fee schedule for the entity named in the application.

The biggest difference: trading CFDs versus owning investments

FxPro is primarily built around leveraged derivatives. A forex or stock-index CFD tracks the price of an underlying asset, but it does not give you ownership of that asset. A share CFD does not make you a shareholder, and a CFD position normally incurs financing or holding costs when kept open overnight.

Swissquote is more relevant if you want a conventional investment account containing securities such as shares, ETFs, bonds or funds. When you buy an actual ETF through a securities account, you own the investment vehicle or a beneficial interest in it, rather than merely entering a contract tracking its price. The precise legal ownership and custody arrangement are set out in the account documents.

That leads to a simple decision:

  • For short-term leveraged speculation: compare FxPro and Swissquote’s FX/CFD conditions.
  • For long-term investing: compare Swissquote’s securities service with other investment platforms. FxPro may not be a like-for-like alternative.

FxPro: strengths and weaknesses

Where FxPro is likely to appeal

  • Trading-platform choice: Traders may be able to choose between MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, cTrader and FxPro’s proprietary interface, depending on their location and account setup.
  • Trading-focused product range: The platform is designed around forex, indices, commodities, shares and other CFDs rather than around portfolio custody.
  • Algorithmic trading: MetaTrader Expert Advisors and cTrader automation can be useful for traders testing systematic strategies. Availability and technical requirements depend on the chosen platform.
  • Account flexibility: FxPro has historically offered different execution and pricing configurations, including spread-based and commission-based approaches in some markets.

FxPro’s limitations

  • It is not a general-purpose investment account: Do not assume that buying a stock CFD is equivalent to buying the stock.
  • Leverage magnifies losses: A small deposit can control a much larger position. A stop-loss is not a guarantee against slippage during a gap or fast market.
  • Costs are strategy-dependent: A low advertised spread may be offset by commission, overnight financing, conversion costs or wider spreads outside liquid market hours.
  • Entity differences matter: FxPro’s regulator, leverage limits, negative-balance rules, eligible products and compensation arrangements can differ by country.

Swissquote: strengths and weaknesses

Where Swissquote is likely to appeal

  • Broader investment coverage: Eligible clients can generally access a wider selection of conventional securities than they would at a specialist CFD broker.
  • One-account convenience: Depending on residence and service, Swissquote may combine securities investing, FX/CFD trading, crypto services and banking functionality.
  • Long-term portfolio use: It is better aligned with investors who want to hold shares or ETFs rather than trade only price differences.
  • Multiple interfaces: Swissquote provides its own trading tools and may support MetaTrader for FX and CFD clients. The exact combination is account- and country-specific.

Swissquote’s limitations

  • Investment-account costs can be layered: Check dealing commissions, custody or account fees, exchange costs, stamp taxes, fund charges, data subscriptions and transfer fees.
  • FX trading may not be the cheapest for every strategy: A specialist trader should compare the complete cost of a round trip, including financing—not just the headline spread.
  • Product access varies by location: The Swiss entity, a European entity and a UK entity can have different terms and available products.
  • More services can mean more complexity: A broad platform is useful, but an investor who only needs a simple low-cost ETF portfolio may find a dedicated investment platform easier to evaluate.

Fees: how to compare them properly

There is no useful single answer to “which broker is cheaper” without specifying the trade. Compare the following example using the same currency pair, position size and holding period:

  1. Record the quoted spread at the time you would normally trade.
  2. Add the opening and closing commission, if the account charges one.
  3. Estimate overnight financing if the position will remain open after the broker’s daily rollover time.
  4. Add the cost of converting your deposit, profit or loss into your account currency.
  5. Check whether the broker applies minimum commissions or a minimum ticket charge.
  6. For shares and ETFs, include exchange fees, taxes, custody charges and fund expenses.

For a CFD, the practical calculation is:

total trading cost = spread cost + commission + financing + conversion charges + other applicable fees

A trader opening and closing positions within minutes may care most about spread and commission. A position trader may find overnight financing more important. A long-term investor should focus on custody, dealing and fund costs rather than CFD spreads.

Regulation and protection

Both firms operate through multiple regulated entities. The name on the website is not enough: the important question is which company will be your contractual counterparty.

Before depositing money, find these details in the account agreement:

  • the legal entity accepting you;
  • its regulator and licence number;
  • the applicable investor-compensation or deposit-protection scheme;
  • whether client money is segregated;
  • whether negative-balance protection applies to your account;
  • the firm’s procedure for complaints and dispute escalation.

Deposit protection and investment compensation do not protect you from a losing trade. They are designed for specific failures of an eligible institution and are subject to scheme rules and limits. Securities held in custody are also not the same thing as cash deposits.

Regulation also affects leverage. Retail clients in stricter jurisdictions may receive substantially lower maximum leverage than professional clients or clients served by another entity. Higher leverage is not a benefit by itself; it increases the speed at which a losing position consumes margin.

Which broker has the better platform?

Choose FxPro’s platform range if you already use MetaTrader or cTrader, need Expert Advisors, or want to select a platform around your trading workflow. Test the demo account for order execution, charting, pending orders and automated-strategy support before funding it.

Choose Swissquote’s ecosystem if you want one login for securities and trading services and prefer a proprietary investment interface. For a portfolio investor, the critical platform features are not just indicators. Check recurring-investment support, corporate-action handling, tax documents, dividend processing, portfolio reporting and transfer-out procedures.

FxPro or Swissquote for beginners?

For a beginner building wealth, Swissquote is usually the more relevant of the two if the account will hold diversified, unleveraged investments such as broad-market ETFs. Even then, compare its costs with simpler investment providers before deciding.

For a beginner who wants to trade forex, neither broker removes the core risks. Start with a demo account, understand margin and practise calculating the cash loss from a stop-out. Do not treat a small minimum deposit as evidence that a small deposit is sufficient. A highly leveraged position can lose a large percentage of an account quickly.

Avoid funding a live CFD account with money needed for rent, debt payments, emergencies or near-term goals.

How to choose before opening an account

  2. Write down the legal entity, regulator and available products shown during application.
  3. Download the current fee schedule rather than relying on a comparison site’s headline.
  4. Use a demo account to compare order types, execution and platform usability.
  5. Calculate a typical round-trip trade and a one-week holding cost.

FAQ

Is FxPro safer than Swissquote?

Neither brand can be labelled universally safer. Safety depends on the regulated legal entity serving you, client-money arrangements, applicable compensation rules and the risks of the product you trade. A leveraged CFD remains risky even when offered by a regulated broker.

Can I buy real stocks through FxPro?

FxPro is primarily a forex and CFD broker. A stock CFD provides price exposure without the same ownership rights as a share. Check the products available to your country before assuming that a physical-stock service is offered.

Is Swissquote good for forex trading?

It can be suitable for clients who want forex alongside securities and other financial services. Active forex traders should compare its complete spread, financing, platform and execution costs with specialist CFD brokers, including FxPro.

Which broker is cheaper, FxPro or Swissquote?

There is no universal winner. Compare the same instrument, position size, account currency and holding period. Include spread, commission, overnight financing, conversion costs and any account or custody charges.

Can U.S. residents use FxPro or Swissquote?

Availability is jurisdiction-specific and should be checked directly with each broker. Do not rely on an old review or a search result; the current application page and legal information determine whether residents of your country are accepted.

Should a beginner use leverage with either broker?

Beginners should be especially cautious. Leverage magnifies both gains and losses, and fast markets can cause slippage or a margin closeout. Learn the margin calculation on a demo account and risk only money you can afford to lose.

The Bottom Line

FxPro is the better fit for specialist forex and CFD trading, particularly if platform choice and automated trading matter. Swissquote is the better fit for investors who want actual securities such as shares and ETFs alongside trading and other financial services.

Do not choose between them using only the advertised spread, minimum deposit or brand reputation. Confirm the legal entity serving your country, then compare the full cost of your actual strategy and distinguish clearly between owning an investment and trading a CFD.
