IG is usually the better choice for traders who want broad market access, advanced research and a mature all-in-one platform. FXCM is the more focused option for forex traders who prefer a simpler product range, Trading Station and FXCM’s specialist trading tools.

“IG” and “FXCM” are brand names used by groups of separately regulated companies. The company that actually opens your account determines your leverage, available instruments, negative-balance protection, complaints process, investor compensation and fee schedule.

For example, a UK retail client may receive restrictions and protections required by the Financial Conduct Authority. An Australian client may be onboarded under an ASIC-regulated entity with different product rules. An offshore client can face materially different terms. The same brand name does not mean identical protection worldwide.
Before comparing headline spreads, open each broker’s account-opening page for your country and identify:
- The legal company named in the client agreement.
- The regulator and licence number.
- Whether you are classified as retail, professional or eligible counterparty.
- Which products are available to that entity.
- Whether negative-balance protection and compensation arrangements apply.
FXCM vs IG: account costs
FXCM pricing
FXCM is primarily associated with forex and CFD trading. Depending on the entity and account, the main trading cost may be incorporated into the spread, or a more active-trader pricing arrangement may be available. FXCM displays live dealing rates rather than offering one universal price that applies to every country and instrument.
FXCM can be attractive to traders who use smaller position sizes. Its platforms have traditionally supported micro-lot trading, which allows a trader to control risk more precisely than with a broker that imposes larger minimum trade sizes.
IG pricing
IG commonly uses spread-based pricing for many forex and CFD products, although the exact spread depends on the instrument, account, market conditions and jurisdiction. Some products, particularly shares, can involve a commission rather than—or in addition to—a spread.
IG may also offer different account structures, such as CFD, spread betting or share-dealing accounts, depending on the country. These are not interchangeable:
- CFD trading: you speculate on price movements and normally pay spread, commission or both, plus financing when positions remain open.
- Spread betting: available only in some jurisdictions, with costs and tax treatment that differ from CFDs.
- Share dealing: you buy or sell the underlying shares, with dealing commissions, custody charges or foreign-exchange costs potentially relevant.
Do not compare an IG share-dealing account with an FXCM CFD account as though they provide the same investment.

Which broker has more markets?
IG generally wins on market breadth. Its non-U.S. offerings commonly include forex, indices, commodities, shares, ETFs, interest-rate products, options or futures access in selected markets, and other leveraged products. The exact catalogue is country-specific: an instrument available to a UK client may not be available to an EU or Australian client.
FXCM has a narrower core identity. It offers major, minor and exotic currency pairs, indices, commodities and selected share or cryptocurrency CFDs in eligible jurisdictions. It is also known for thematic products such as currency baskets and stock baskets, where available.

- Choose IG if you want one account for forex, global shares, indices and a broader research universe.
- Choose FXCM if your watchlist is mainly currency pairs and you do not need hundreds or thousands of additional instruments.
“More markets” is not automatically better. A wider product list can encourage unnecessary trading, while a focused list can make risk monitoring easier.
Platforms and tools
FXCM
FXCM’s proprietary Trading Station is its main platform advantage. It is designed for forex and CFD trading and includes charting, order management, watchlists and account monitoring. FXCM also supports MetaTrader 4 in many markets and has offered TradingView integration or access in selected regions.
Trading Station is worth considering if you want:
- A platform built specifically around FXCM’s products.
- Small trade sizes and straightforward forex order entry.
- FXCM’s automated-strategy, basket or market-scanning tools where supported.
Check account compatibility carefully. An MT4 account is not necessarily identical to a Trading Station account. Some order types, execution settings or platform features may not carry across platforms.
IG
IG’s web platform is one of its core strengths. It combines charts, news, watchlists, product discovery, risk controls and order tickets in one interface. IG also offers mobile trading and, in some jurisdictions, MetaTrader 4 or third-party platform connectivity.
IG may suit traders who want to research an instrument and place a trade without moving between several applications. Its platform is generally more useful for a multi-asset watchlist than a specialist forex terminal.

Neither platform eliminates execution risk. A web platform can be affected by browser performance, internet interruptions, market gaps and liquidity. A stop-loss normally triggers a market order; it does not guarantee that the trade will close at the stop price unless the broker offers a separate guaranteed-stop product and the trader pays the applicable cost.
Execution, slippage and order types
Both brokers execute orders under their applicable terms, and neither can guarantee a particular fill during a fast market. Slippage is more likely around economic announcements, market openings, weekend gaps and thinly traded instruments.
When testing a broker, look beyond an advertised execution speed. Ask:

- Can limit orders receive positive slippage?
- How are stop orders handled during gaps?
- Are guaranteed stops available, and what premium is charged?
- Does the platform show execution statistics for the relevant entity?
FXCM has historically published execution and slippage information, which can be useful when evaluating its dealing model. IG also publishes product and execution information, but the relevant document depends on the product and jurisdiction. Treat all aggregate statistics as historical evidence, not a promise for your next trade.
Research and education
IG is usually stronger for investors who want research integrated into the broker experience. Its services commonly include market commentary, economic-calendar material, charting, analyst views, webinars, educational courses and product screeners.
FXCM also provides market analysis, trading education and proprietary tools, but its strengths are more closely tied to active forex trading. A trader interested in currency sentiment, technical setups, automated strategies or basket exposure may find FXCM’s tools more relevant than a large general-purpose research library.
Research should not be confused with advice. Broker-produced analysis may help explain a market, but it does not make a leveraged CFD or forex trade suitable for you.

Minimum deposits and non-trading fees
Minimum deposits vary by country and funding method. Both brokers may accept cards and bank transfers, while the available methods, processing times and limits depend on the account entity.

Important fees to check before funding include:
- Card or bank-transfer charges.
- International withdrawal fees.
- Currency-conversion markups.
- Inactivity or account-dormancy charges.
- Overnight financing.

- Share-dealing commissions or custody charges.
FXCM has used inactivity-fee policies in some markets after a prolonged period without client-initiated activity. IG may also apply an inactivity charge in certain jurisdictions or account types. The amount and trigger period can change, so read the current fee schedule rather than relying on an old comparison.
If you trade infrequently, set a calendar reminder to review both accounts. Closing an unused account or withdrawing its balance may prevent a small dormant-account charge from becoming a recurring cost.
Leverage, protection and risk
Retail leverage is normally capped by the regulator governing your account. A professional classification can provide higher leverage but may remove important retail protections. Do not choose an offshore entity simply because its advertised leverage is higher.

- Negative-balance protection.
- Automatic close-out rules.
- Segregation of client money.
- Investor compensation eligibility.
- Restrictions on complex or high-risk products.
Negative-balance protection is particularly important for leveraged trading, but it does not prevent losses within the money you deposit. A stop-loss can also be exceeded during a gap. The safest practical control is position sizing: risk an amount you can afford to lose, keep leverage modest and avoid concentrating your entire account in one volatile instrument.
Funding and withdrawals: what to test
A broker can look attractive until a withdrawal becomes inconvenient. Before placing a substantial deposit, make a small deposit and withdrawal using the method you expect to use long term.
Confirm:
- Whether withdrawals must return to the original funding source.
- Whether the name on the bank account must match the trading account.
- How long compliance checks take.
- Whether the broker or payment provider charges a fee.
- Whether open positions and margin requirements restrict the amount you can withdraw.
Keep copies of deposit confirmations, withdrawal requests and account statements. These records are useful if a payment is delayed or a fee is disputed.

How to make the final choice
- Enter your country on both websites and record the legal entity.
- List the five instruments you will actually trade.
- Compare the typical spread and commission at your trading times.
- Calculate financing for a position held for one week, not just the opening cost.
- Test the platform with a demo account and place different order types.
- Read the client agreement, fee schedule and negative-balance provisions.
- Make a small live deposit and withdrawal before committing more money.
For example, a day trader comparing EUR/USD should focus on spread, commission, slippage and platform stability. A trader holding index or share CFDs for several weeks should focus more heavily on financing, dividend adjustments and product-specific costs. A long-term share investor should not use a leveraged CFD account as a substitute for an unleveraged share-dealing account.

Is IG safer than FXCM?
Safety depends primarily on the regulated entity, not the brand name. Compare the regulator, client-money rules, negative-balance protection, compensation scheme and complaints process shown in your account agreement.
Can I use MetaTrader with both brokers?
