Freetrade is best suited to investors who want a simple mobile platform for long-term investing in shares, ETFs and tax-efficient accounts. It is less suitable for frequent traders, advanced order types, complex products or anyone looking for personal financial advice.
Is Freetrade a genuine, authorised broker?
Yes. The UK Freetrade business is operated by regulated companies rather than an anonymous offshore website. Freetrade Limited is authorised and regulated by the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), and the firm appears on the FCA Financial Services Register. Its FCA reference number should be checked directly on the Register before you open an account or send money.
Freetrade is also a real UK company with a substantial customer base and a publicly documented platform, pricing structure and complaints process. These facts are useful indicators of legitimacy, but the important check is the specific legal entity and website involved. Scammers can copy a genuine company’s name, logo, FCA number and employee details.

Use the FCA Register at register.fca.org.uk. Search for “Freetrade” and confirm that:
- the firm name and status match the business you intend to use;
- the website and contact details correspond with the official Freetrade site;
- the permissions cover the investment service being offered; and
- you are not being redirected to a different company with a similar name.
FCA authorisation reduces regulatory risk. It does not guarantee that Freetrade will make money for you, that every investment is suitable, or that the value of your portfolio cannot fall.
Why are there “Freetrade scam” searches?
Most scam concerns fall into two separate categories: complaints about a real investment platform and impersonation by criminals.
A legitimate platform can still have complaints about app outages, account verification, withdrawals, transfers, customer service, fees or a restricted investment range. Those are service issues to investigate; they are not, by themselves, evidence that the company is fraudulent.
The more serious danger is a clone scam. A criminal may create a website resembling Freetrade, buy a sponsored search advert, use a fake social-media profile or contact you through WhatsApp or Telegram. The person may promise guaranteed returns, exclusive shares, unusually high interest or help recovering money from a previous scam.
Do not assume that a contact is genuine because it supplies an FCA number or uses a Freetrade logo. Find the official website independently, type the address yourself or use a bookmark, and contact the firm through details published on that site.
How to tell the real Freetrade from an impersonator
- Do not use the link in an unsolicited message. Open the official Freetrade website or app separately.
- Check the domain letter by letter. Look for misspellings, extra words, unusual country domains and lookalike characters.
- Verify the firm on the FCA Register. Do not rely on a registration screenshot sent by the contact.
- Never disclose passwords or security codes. A genuine support agent should not ask for your full password, one-time passcode or remote access to your device.
- Check the payment destination. Be suspicious if you are asked to pay a personal bank account, cryptocurrency wallet, gift card or an account with a different company name.
- Reject guaranteed-return claims. Shares and ETFs can lose value, and no legitimate broker can guarantee a profit.
Stop communicating if someone claims to be a Freetrade employee and pressures you to act immediately. If you have already paid a suspected scammer, contact your bank straight away, preserve messages and report the incident to Action Fraud. Change passwords that may have been exposed.

How customer money and investments are held
With a regulated investment platform, customer assets are normally held separately from the platform’s own business assets. Freetrade uses nominee and custody arrangements so that the underlying shares and funds are not simply treated as the company’s working capital.
This separation is designed to help return customer assets if the platform fails. It does not remove all risk. Administrative problems, fraud, counterparty issues and delays can still require investigation, and the value of your holdings can fall because of market movements.
Freetrade is an execution-only service. You choose what to buy and sell; the platform does not provide a personal recommendation that a particular share or ETF is suitable for your circumstances.
FSCS protection: what it covers
Eligible investment business with an authorised firm may fall within the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS). For investments, the standard compensation limit is generally £85,000 per eligible person, per authorised firm if the firm fails and there is a shortfall in protected assets.
That limit is not a promise that your portfolio is worth at least £85,000. FSCS compensation does not normally cover:
- a share price falling;
- an ETF or fund performing badly;
- losses caused by choosing an unsuitable investment yourself;
- normal market volatility; or
- a clone website or unauthorised scammer.
Cash protection can involve different rules from investment protection, including the bank or banks holding the money and the applicable deposit-protection limit. Check Freetrade’s current safeguarding and protection information for your account type rather than assuming that all cash and investments have identical cover.

Freetrade fees and account types
Freetrade’s main attraction is a relatively simple, app-based pricing model. Depending on the account and plan available when you apply, charges may include a subscription for access to particular account types, a platform charge, foreign-exchange costs and other dealing-related costs.
Freetrade has offered tiered plans, including a free entry-level option and paid plans with additional account features. Pricing and what each plan includes can change, so check the in-app pricing screen and the current pricing page before joining. In particular, confirm:
- whether a Stocks and Shares ISA or SIPP is included in your chosen plan;
- whether the charge is monthly, annual or percentage-based;
- the foreign-exchange markup for US and other non-sterling investments;
- whether interest or other charges apply to uninvested cash;
- any transfer-out, account-closure or administration charges; and
- the dealing times and restrictions for the investment you want.
A low headline fee can be poor value if you hold a small portfolio, trade frequently in foreign markets or pay for features you do not use. Conversely, a subscription may be competitive for someone who uses the included ISA or SIPP and invests regularly.
What can you invest in?
Freetrade focuses on shares, ETFs and selected investment products available through its app. The range includes UK-listed investments and a selection of US-listed companies and ETFs, subject to availability, account type and regulatory restrictions.
It is not a full-service stockbroker with every exchange, security and order type. Before opening an account, search the platform for the exact fund, ETF or share you want. A company being listed on a major exchange does not guarantee that Freetrade supports it.
Investors should also check whether a US security is available as an actual share, through a fractional share arrangement or through another instrument. Fractional holdings can have different dealing, voting, transfer and corporate-action arrangements from whole shares.

Trading limitations and practical risks
Freetrade is designed primarily for straightforward, longer-term investing. That simplicity has trade-offs:

- some instruments and exchanges are unavailable;
- fractional shares may not transfer in the same way as whole shares;
- orders may be grouped or executed during specified dealing windows;
- foreign-exchange costs can materially affect overseas purchases; and
- an app outage or connectivity problem can prevent you from viewing or placing an order temporarily.
Market orders can execute at a price different from the price you saw seconds earlier. Prices can move sharply, particularly around company announcements or market openings. A platform cannot guarantee that you will be able to sell at your preferred price during a volatile market.
These limitations are not evidence of a scam, but they matter when choosing a broker. Someone needing advanced limit orders, short selling, options, futures or highly active execution should compare Freetrade with a platform built for those requirements.

Freetrade may ask for identity and source-of-funds information before allowing an account to be used. Verification delays can result from incomplete information, document-quality problems, sanctions screening or anti-money-laundering checks. A delay is frustrating, but it is not automatically proof that money has been stolen.
Withdrawals generally need to go to a verified bank account in the customer’s name. Recent deposits, changed bank details, unsettled trades or compliance checks can delay a withdrawal. Do not pay a third party claiming that an extra “release fee”, “tax” or “verification deposit” is needed to access your money. Confirm any genuine charge inside the app or through official support.
Transfers between providers can also take time, particularly where investments must be transferred rather than sold and repurchased. Ask whether a transfer will be in specie, whether fractional holdings need to be sold, and whether selling could create a tax or market-timing consequence outside a tax wrapper.

How to complain about Freetrade
Start with Freetrade’s formal complaints process and keep copies of account statements, order confirmations, support tickets and relevant dates. Explain what happened, the financial impact and the resolution you want.
If the firm’s final response does not resolve an eligible complaint, or it does not respond within the applicable timeframe, you may be able to refer the matter to the Financial Ombudsman Service. The Ombudsman route is for disputes with the regulated firm; it will not normally recover money sent to an unauthorised clone scammer. In a suspected fraud, contact your bank and report the matter to the relevant UK fraud-reporting service as well.
Claims that need context
- “Freetrade is free, so it must be a scam.” Not necessarily. A platform can offer a free tier while earning revenue through paid plans, FX charges or other disclosed services.
- “FSCS protection means I cannot lose money.” Incorrect. FSCS protection is not insurance against poor investment performance.
- “The app is not a bank, so my investments are unprotected.” Oversimplified. Protection depends on the regulated entity, asset custody and the particular product.
- “A Freetrade-branded WhatsApp adviser is genuine.” Treat unsolicited WhatsApp investment offers as suspicious and verify them independently.
- “A withdrawal delay proves Freetrade is fraudulent.” Not by itself. Checks, unsettled trades and bank-account verification can cause delays, though unexplained or repeated problems should be documented and escalated.
