Yes, the move was real—but the original headline is now outdated. OpenAI announced on May 7, 2025, that Fidji Simo would leave Instacart and become CEO of Applications, reporting directly to Sam Altman. She did not become OpenAI’s overall CEO. Instacart’s CEO transition took effect on August 15, 2025, and Simo left its board later that year.
What happened to Fidji Simo?
“Instacart CEO Fidji Simo is joining OpenAI” described a genuine 2025 leadership move, not a rumor or a mistaken identity. OpenAI announced Simo’s appointment on May 7, 2025. The companies said she would transition from Instacart over the following months and join OpenAI as CEO of Applications.

For a current article, however, “is joining” is misleading. The transition was completed during 2025. The latest official evidence available identifies Simo as OpenAI’s CEO of Applications in February 2026, while Instacart filings confirm that she no longer holds an Instacart executive or board role.

Simo’s exact title was CEO of Applications, not CEO of OpenAI. She reported directly to Sam Altman, who remained OpenAI’s overall CEO and continued overseeing the company’s major pillars, including Research, Compute and Applications.
#1 Best Overall
OpenAI described Applications as the part of the organization responsible for connecting its research with products, users and business operations. The role therefore covered a broad operating area, but it did not put Simo above Altman or make her a replacement for him.
What did the Applications role cover?
OpenAI initially described the position broadly, referring to the product, business and operational work involved in bringing its technology to users. It did not say that Simo would personally run every OpenAI product or every commercial function.
A later OpenAI announcement provided more context. In September 2025, OpenAI said Vijaye Raji would become CTO of Applications, reporting to Simo. The announcement associated the group with product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex, infrastructure, Integrity, and scaling products for consumers and businesses.
Rank #2
That evidence supports describing Applications as a major product-and-operations organization. It does not support reducing Simo’s job to “commercializing ChatGPT” or claiming that she alone ran all of OpenAI’s business.
Why was Simo a notable hire?
OpenAI said it selected Simo for her combination of consumer-product leadership, operating experience at scale, product and business expertise, and experience managing complex organizations. OpenAI also noted that she already understood the company through her earlier board service.
Before Instacart, Simo spent more than a decade at Facebook and ultimately became vice president and head of the Facebook app. According to OpenAI’s 2024 board announcement, her responsibilities included major products and functions such as News Feed, Stories, Groups, Video, Marketplace, Gaming, News, Dating and advertising.
Simo became Instacart’s CEO in 2021. In her letter to Instacart employees, she said the opportunity at OpenAI was especially compelling because of her interest in artificial intelligence and its potential impact, including the possibility of helping cure diseases. Those statements explain her personal motivation; they do not establish that she was hired specifically to make OpenAI profitable or to commercialize one particular product.

The transition happened in stages rather than on the day of the announcement:
- May 7, 2025: OpenAI announced Simo’s appointment as CEO of Applications.
- May 8, 2025: Instacart confirmed that she would leave in the coming months.
- May 28, 2025: Instacart announced that Chris Rogers would become CEO effective August 15.
- August 15, 2025: Simo resigned as Instacart’s CEO and president, and Rogers became CEO.
- November 24, 2025: Simo resigned as Instacart’s board chair and director, completing her departure from the company’s leadership and board.
The precise dates are documented in Instacart’s 2026 Form 10-K and its board-related filing.
Who replaced her at Instacart?
Chris Rogers became Instacart’s CEO and president on August 15, 2025, and later became board chair when Simo left the board.
Rogers had been Instacart’s chief business officer and had worked at the company since 2019. His previous responsibilities included retailer relationships, advertising sales and research and development, partnerships, mergers and acquisitions, Instacart Business and Instacart Health. Instacart announced the succession in its CEO appointment release.
Simo already had a connection to OpenAI
This was not her first formal association with OpenAI. In March 2024, while still Instacart’s CEO and chair, Simo joined OpenAI’s board of directors. That board appointment preceded her move into an operating role.
Best Value
The sequence provides useful context, but the available announcements do not say that board membership guaranteed or directly caused her later appointment as CEO of Applications.
What is her current status?
As of the latest official evidence available for this article, Simo is identified as OpenAI’s CEO of Applications. OpenAI used that title in a February 2026 announcement, and Instacart’s 2026 filing identifies her as no longer serving as its CEO, chair or director.
That is the strongest verified position to report. Unconfirmed social-media claims about a later change in Simo’s OpenAI role should not be treated as established fact without a newer official announcement.
Bottom line on the headline
The accurate current version is: Former Instacart CEO Fidji Simo joined OpenAI as CEO of Applications in 2025. She transitioned out of Instacart, Chris Rogers succeeded her as CEO, and Simo later left Instacart’s board. She did not become OpenAI’s overall CEO; Sam Altman remained in that position.
