Form 16 and Form 26AS are not competing versions of the same record. Form 16 is your employer’s certificate of salary, tax deducted at source (TDS) and related salary details. Form 26AS is the Income Tax Department’s tax-credit statement, showing TDS/TCS data reported against your PAN. If the figures differ, use both records to reconcile the entry, but the TDS credit you claim in your income-tax return is generally restricted to the amount reflected in Form 26AS.
The practical fix is usually with the employer or other deductor: verify the year, PAN, TAN and amounts, then ask the deductor to deposit any missing tax and file a revised TDS statement. AIS is a broader cross-check, not a replacement for either record.

What Form 16 and Form 26AS each prove
The first step is to understand what question each document answers. Treating a certificate as if it were the department’s posted credit record is the source of many filing errors.

Form 16 is issued by an employer for salary income. It records salary-related figures, the TDS deducted from that salary and the employer’s identifying details. It is evidence of what the employer certified and reported for you; it is not, by itself, confirmation that the department has posted the corresponding tax credit to your account.

The official sample Form 16 includes fields such as the employer’s name and TAN, your PAN, salary or payment details, TDS deducted and tax-payment matching status. Depending on the entry, the payment status can be shown as unmatched, provisional, final or overbooked. An unmatched payment does not become final credit merely because it appears on the certificate; the payment details must match the deductor’s statement.
Form 26AS: the department’s tax-credit view
Form 26AS is the tax-credit statement associated with your PAN. From assessment year (AY) 2023-24 onward, the Income Tax Department describes Form 26AS on TRACES as displaying TDS- and TCS-related data. Other taxpayer information is provided through the Annual Information Statement (AIS).
Form 26AS answers a narrower but decisive filing question: what TDS or TCS credit has the department received and associated with your PAN for the selected period? The department’s tax-credit mismatch guidance states that credit claimed in an income-tax return is restricted to the amount reflected in Form 26AS.

Form 16 can show that an employer deducted tax from salary while Form 26AS still lacks the corresponding credit. That can happen when the employer has not deposited the tax, filed its statement, used the wrong PAN, reported the wrong period or submitted details that have not matched. Form 16 remains useful evidence, but it does not make an absent Form 26AS entry automatically claimable.
Quick comparison: Form 16, Form 26AS and AIS
| Comparison point | Form 16 | Form 26AS | AIS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Employer’s certificate of salary and salary TDS | Department’s TDS/TCS tax-credit statement | Broader statement of taxpayer information reported to the department |
| Prepared or displayed by | Employer (the salary deductor) | Income Tax Department through TRACES, using deductor reports | Income Tax Department |
| Main scope | Salary income, salary TDS and certificate fields | TDS and TCS-related data, as described by the department from AY 2023-24 | Reported transactions and other information beyond the narrower 26AS TDS/TCS view |
| Identity fields to check | Employer name, TAN and your PAN | Deductor identity and PAN-linked credit | Source and reported transaction details |
| Can you give feedback? | No department feedback facility; corrections go through the employer | No direct replacement for a deductor’s corrected statement | Yes. AIS allows taxpayer feedback on reported information |
| Role in claiming TDS | Supporting certificate | Credit generally limited to the amount shown here | Cross-check and discrepancy-reconciliation source |
These records should be reconciled field by field. Neither document overrides every field in the other: Form 16 explains the employer’s salary calculation, while Form 26AS determines what tax credit is visible in the department’s account for filing purposes.
Why TDS in Form 16 may not match Form 26AS
A mismatch is not always an arithmetic mistake. Identify the type before deciding who must act.
Wrong financial year or assessment year
Salary and TDS are reported for a financial year (FY), while an income-tax return is identified by its corresponding assessment year (AY). Selecting a different year in TRACES or comparing a Form 16 for one FY with a return for another can make a correct entry appear missing. Keep every document in the same FY/AY pair.

PAN or deductor identification error
If the employer entered an incorrect PAN, the credit may not appear under your account. Compare the PAN printed on Form 16 with the PAN used in the Form 26AS record. Also compare the deductor’s name and TAN. A similar employer name is not enough; TAN is the key deductor identifier in the reporting chain.
Tax deducted but not deposited or statement not filed
An employer can deduct an amount from salary and still fail to deposit it or file the relevant TDS statement correctly. In that case, Form 16 may show the deduction while Form 26AS has no matching credit. The employer, not the employee, must correct the underlying statement.
Amount, quarter or payment details reported incorrectly
The employer may have reported the wrong TDS amount, salary or payment period. The official Form 16 sample’s unmatched and provisional statuses reflect that a payment record can remain unresolved until the deductor’s payment details match its statement.
Processing delay or a corrected statement not yet visible
After a deductor files a correction, the updated entry may not be immediately visible. Recheck Form 26AS and AIS after the correction is processed rather than assuming that a new Form 16 alone has changed the department’s record.
What to compare before contacting the employer
Use one row for each employer or other deductor. A careful comparison prevents a routine period-selection error from becoming an unnecessary escalation.
- Period: FY and its corresponding AY on the return, Form 16 and Form 26AS.
- Deductor identity: legal name and TAN; include a bank or other deductor when the mismatch is not salary-related.
- Your identity: PAN on Form 16 and in the department’s records.
- Income or payment: salary, interest or other payment amount reported by the deductor.
- TDS deducted: amount shown on Form 16 or another TDS certificate versus the amount credited in Form 26AS.
- TDS deposited or credited: where the record shows a deposit or credit amount, compare it separately from the amount deducted.
- Payment status: unmatched, provisional, final or overbooked status shown in the Form 16 certificate.
Save a copy of the relevant Form 26AS entry and AIS display for the same period. A screenshot or downloaded statement should show the selected year and your PAN-linked details so the deductor can identify the exact record.
Step-by-step: fix TDS missing from Form 26AS
1. Select the same year everywhere
- Write down the FY and AY printed on Form 16.
- Select that same AY when viewing Form 26AS on TRACES and the corresponding period in AIS.
- Use the same year in the return you are preparing or have already filed.
Do not combine a Form 16 for one FY with a Form 26AS view for another. This is the fastest mismatch to resolve because no correction is required when the records are simply being compared under different years.

2. Match PAN, TAN and deductor name
- Read the employer’s PAN and TAN fields on Form 16.
- Locate the matching deductor entry in Form 26AS.
- Check that the PAN used by the employer is your current, correct PAN.
If the credit is reported against a different PAN, tell payroll that the TDS statement must be corrected for the employee identifier. If the deductor identity itself is unfamiliar, investigate before claiming the credit; AIS may help identify the source of a non-salary entry.
3. Reconcile each amount
- Compare salary or payment amount.
- Compare TDS deducted.
- Compare TDS deposited or credited, if separately displayed.
- Note any quarter or payment-status difference.
Prepare a short discrepancy list rather than sending only “Form 26AS is wrong.” For example: “AY [year], employer TAN [TAN], Form 16 TDS ₹[amount], Form 26AS TDS ₹[amount], PAN matches, entry absent for quarter [quarter].” Keep variable text inside your own message template; the values must come from your documents.
4. Ask the deductor to investigate and correct
Contact payroll, the employer’s tax team or the relevant bank or other deductor. Provide the certificate, the affected Form 26AS/AIS entry and the discrepancy list. Ask the deductor to confirm four points:
- Whether the tax was actually deposited for the stated period.
- Whether the TDS statement was filed for the correct FY/AY and quarter.
- Whether your PAN and the deductor’s TAN were entered correctly.
- Whether the amount deducted and amount deposited were reported accurately.
The Income Tax Department’s Tax Credit Mismatch guidance says that the employer or deductor needs to file a revised TDS return for a TDS mismatch. An employee cannot repair the deductor’s original statement by entering a higher credit in the return.
5. Recheck the department records
Once the deductor confirms that a correction has been filed, view the same FY/AY in Form 26AS and AIS again. Keep the corrected display with the original Form 16 and your correspondence. Do not treat the employer’s assurance or a freshly issued certificate as proof that the department’s tax-credit record has already updated.
6. File only the credit that is supported
When preparing the return, use the TDS credit reflected in Form 26AS. If the deductor has not corrected the entry by the time you file, claiming the full Form 16 amount can create a tax-credit mismatch because the department limits credit to the amount visible in Form 26AS. Keep evidence of the shortfall and pursue the deductor correction separately.
If your income-tax return has already been filed
The correct route depends on whether the issue is still a deductor mismatch or whether the return has been processed.

Return filed but no section 143(1) intimation yet
The Income Tax Department’s mismatch guidance says a revised return may be available before an intimation under section 143(1), subject to the applicable year’s statutory deadline and conditions. A revised return can correct your filed figures, but it cannot make an unreported TDS entry appear in Form 26AS. Start the deductor correction at the same time.
Return processed and an intimation issued
For a processed-return tax-credit problem, the department’s rectification guidance describes a Tax Credit Mismatch Correction route for TDS, TCS and tax-challan details. Check the return status and the applicable year’s portal procedure before submitting a rectification request. Use rectification for a processing or credit-record issue supported by the available records; do not use it to claim TDS that still does not appear in Form 26AS.

Demand caused by a missing credit
Read the intimation to determine whether the adjustment is specifically a TDS mismatch or another return error. If the deductor has not corrected its statement, ask it to do so first. After the corrected credit appears, follow the department’s available response or rectification process for that processed return and retain the acknowledgement numbers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How AIS fits into the reconciliation
AIS is broader than Form 26AS. The department says that, from AY 2023-24, Form 26AS displays TDS/TCS-related data while other taxpayer details are available in AIS. AIS also permits feedback on reported information.
Use AIS to answer “what information has been reported about me?” and Form 26AS to answer “what TDS/TCS credit is currently visible?” A difference between the two does not automatically mean one is wrong; their scopes differ. For a salary mismatch, focus first on the employer’s TDS entry, then use AIS to check whether the salary or another reported transaction has a different source or amount.
The department’s ITR-1 filing guidance advises taxpayers to check AIS and Form 26AS and reconcile discrepancies with the employer, tax deductor or bank. Feedback in AIS can flag an information problem, but it does not replace the deductor’s obligation to file a corrected TDS statement.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Claiming Form 16 TDS automatically
Form 16 is important evidence, but the department’s credit limitation is tied to Form 26AS. Wait for the deductor’s correction or claim only the amount reflected in the tax-credit statement, following the applicable filing rules.
Asking the employee to correct the employer’s statement
An employee cannot amend the employer’s TDS return. Ask the employer or other deductor to file the revised TDS statement identified in the department’s mismatch guidance.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Using AIS as a substitute for Form 26AS
AIS is broader and supports feedback. It does not make an absent Form 26AS credit claimable by itself.
Comparing the wrong year
Always write the FY/AY pair at the top of your reconciliation sheet. A year-selection error can imitate a missing TDS entry.
Escalating without identifiers
Payroll can investigate quickly when you provide the employer TAN, your PAN, the period, the exact TDS amounts and the quarter or payment status. A vague request often leads to repeated back-and-forth.
Filing a rectification for a deductor error
Rectification addresses an eligible processed-return or tax-credit correction. It does not replace the deductor’s revised TDS statement. Separate the two tasks: deductor correction first, then the applicable return response.

Bottom line for a TDS mismatch
Use Form 16 to understand what your employer certified and Form 26AS to determine the TDS credit currently visible to the Income Tax Department. Confirm the same FY/AY, PAN, TAN, deductor, payment and amounts; then have the deductor file a revised TDS statement when its report is wrong or incomplete. Check AIS as an additional information source, not as a substitute for Form 26AS. Until the department’s record is corrected, do not assume that the Form 16 figure alone can be claimed.
This explanation reflects the Income Tax Department’s Tax Credit Mismatch guidance, AIS FAQs, ITR-1 FAQs, rectification guidance and Form 16 sample available as of 13 October 2026.
