Forex Broker Models: ECN, STP, DMA, and Market Maker

ECN, STP, DMA, and market maker are not interchangeable broker categories. Learn what each label means, where your forex order may go, and how to check execution costs and conflicts.

Forex broker labels can make execution sound simpler than it is. “ECN,” “STP,” “DMA,” “A-book,” “B-book,” and “no dealing desk” describe parts of a broker’s technology, routing, pricing, or risk-management process—not standardized regulatory categories.

The practical questions are more useful: Who is your contractual counterparty? Where does your order go? Does the broker keep or hedge your market exposure? Can the order be rejected or repriced? And what do the broker’s total costs look like after spreads, commissions, financing, and slippage?

How retail forex execution works

Retail spot forex is usually an over-the-counter (OTC) product. There is generally no single central exchange or universal order book through which every retail trader receives the same price. In a typical arrangement, the broker or dealer provides the contract and the client trades against that firm or an affiliated entity.

That is different from buying a currency futures contract on a regulated exchange. Futures orders enter a defined venue with an exchange and clearing structure. With OTC forex, the client normally relies on the broker’s platform, prices, execution policy, financial resources, and terms for closing the position.

The wider institutional FX market is also fragmented. Banks, non-bank liquidity providers, multi-dealer platforms, electronic communication networks, anonymous order books, and bilateral trading relationships can all be involved. There is no single retail-accessible “interbank exchange” with one official best price.

Regulators therefore focus less on labels and more on the firm’s actual arrangement: whether it deals on its own account, how it forms prices, where orders are executed, what conflicts exist, and how best execution is demonstrated. A single firm can use several models depending on the instrument, order size, client, risk limit, or market conditions.

Market maker brokers

A market maker quotes both a bid and an ask and stands ready to buy from or sell to the client. In retail OTC forex, the broker may be the client’s principal and the contractual counterparty for the trade.

Suppose a trader buys EUR/USD. In a market-making arrangement, the broker may be the seller shown on the contract. The broker then decides how to manage the resulting exposure:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Retain it: The broker keeps the market risk internally.
  2. Hedge it: The broker offsets the position with a bank, prime broker, non-bank liquidity provider, or another venue.
  3. Manage it selectively: The broker hedges only certain orders, clients, instruments, or aggregate exposures.

These are risk-management choices, not separate regulatory classifications. A broker may combine them.

How market makers make money

Revenue can come from the bid-ask spread, commissions, financing or swap charges, markups, and gains or losses on retained exposure. It is too broad to say that a market maker always profits when a client loses. If the broker hedges the exposure, it can generally earn its spread or commission whether the client’s position wins or loses. If the broker retains the exposure, the client’s loss may correspond to a trading gain for the broker, creating a more direct conflict.

Risks to check

  • The client may only be able to trade at prices displayed by that broker.
  • The broker controls its trading hours, margin rules, liquidation procedures, and order terms.
  • The client normally has to close the OTC position with the same contractual counterparty.
  • Fast markets, news, gaps, thin liquidity, and platform outages can produce disputes over fills.
  • Conflicts may be greater where the broker retains client exposure.

A market maker is not automatically unsafe. Transparent pricing, consistent order treatment, adequate regulation, clear conflicts disclosures, and a credible execution policy matter more than the label.

STP: Straight-Through Processing

STP usually means that an order is electronically passed through to another venue, liquidity provider, or counterparty rather than being manually approved by a dealer. It describes a workflow or technology feature, not necessarily an agency-only business model.

A simplified STP chain might look like this:

Client order
↓
Broker risk and execution system
↓
Liquidity aggregator or bridge
↓
Bank, prime broker, non-bank provider, ECN, or other venue

The broker may aggregate quotes from several providers, select one provider, split an order across venues, add a markup, execute some flow internally, or hedge a position later. “STP broker” does not prove that every order is sent directly to an external bank.

In fact, a firm can remain the client’s principal while hedging positions with another execution venue using STP technology. The important distinction is between the electronic transmission of an order and the broker’s legal role in the transaction.

STP failure points

External routing does not guarantee a fill. Orders can be rejected because a liquidity provider has withdrawn its quote, credit is unavailable, the market has moved, the order exceeds available size, or a bridge or aggregator has failed. Other possible results include partial fills, wider spreads, and slippage.

Before opening an account, check the broker’s written policy for venue selection, rejected orders, positive and negative slippage, partial fills, news trading, and last look.

ECN: Electronic Communication Network

An ECN is, in the precise sense, an electronic system that allows orders from multiple participants to interact or be matched. In retail forex marketing, however, “ECN” is often used more loosely to mean access to multiple liquidity providers, raw spreads, a depth-of-market display, or an electronic liquidity venue.

Those features do not necessarily mean that the client’s order enters an anonymous central matching system. A broker advertising an ECN account might still aggregate bank quotes, add a markup, internalize orders, or remain the client’s contractual counterparty.

What a genuine matching venue normally has

  • Multiple participating traders or liquidity providers.
  • Orders that interact within a matching system.
  • Defined matching rules, such as price and time priority.
  • Market data derived from that venue.
  • A separate execution or settlement arrangement.

Even a genuine ECN can produce partial fills, multiple fills at different prices, wider spreads during volatile or quiet periods, rejected orders, and latency-related price changes. A low displayed spread may also be offset by commission and other charges.

Compare the full cost rather than the headline spread:

DMA and DEA: direct electronic access

DMA, or Direct Market Access, generally means that a client’s order is transmitted to a trading venue with relatively direct control over submission. In European regulatory terminology, the more precise term is direct electronic access (DEA).

DMA does not mean an uncontrolled connection that bypasses every intermediary. The broker or access provider can still apply credit checks, margin controls, order-size limits, price collars, and other risk filters. The trading venue may apply its own rules as well.

This concept is clearest in exchange-traded shares and futures, where a defined exchange and matching engine exist. “Forex DMA” requires more investigation because retail spot forex is generally OTC. The phrase could refer to:

  • Access to a named institutional FX venue.
  • A multi-dealer platform.
  • Direct price streams from liquidity providers.
  • A FIX API connection to the broker’s infrastructure.
  • An order-routing arrangement in which the broker remains principal.

A FIX connection, Level 2 screen, or market-depth window does not by itself establish DMA. Ask which venue receives the order, whether it enters a genuine matching system, who is the counterparty, and what controls the broker retains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DMA also cannot eliminate latency, insufficient liquidity, partial fills, rejected orders, venue outages, slippage, or margin restrictions. Risk filters can create a delay between submission and arrival at the venue’s matching engine.

Comparing the four labels

Label What it mainly describes Possible counterparty Does it guarantee external execution? Question to ask
Market maker The firm quotes prices and deals on its own account Usually the broker or an affiliate No Does the firm retain, hedge, or selectively hedge exposure?
STP Electronic forwarding or processing The broker, an external provider, or both No Are all orders routed externally, and how are venues selected?
ECN Electronic matching or multi-participant liquidity access Depends on the venue and account structure No Do orders enter a matching venue or only an aggregator?
DMA/DEA Electronic transmission to a trading venue Venue participants or another disclosed counterparty Only if the named route supports it Which venue receives the order, and what controls remain?

The categories can overlap. A market maker can use STP to hedge selected trades. An ECN can be one venue in an STP arrangement. A DMA provider can still be responsible for risk controls and order filtering.

A-book, B-book, and hybrid execution

“A-book” generally means that the broker passes or hedges client exposure externally. “B-book” generally means that the broker retains some or all of that exposure internally. A hybrid broker uses both approaches.

These are industry shorthand, not dependable descriptions of a firm’s legal structure. A broker can decide how to handle an order based on its size, instrument, client behavior, aggregate exposure, or internal risk threshold. A-book does not automatically mean agency execution: the broker may still be the principal counterparty while hedging externally.

To find out what applies to your account, read the customer agreement, order-execution policy, risk disclosure, and trade confirmations. Marketing pages are not enough.

What “no dealing desk” really means

“No dealing desk” usually means that the broker does not manually approve each trade or manually set a price for each order. It does not prove that the broker is agency-only or that every order reaches an outside venue.

An automated system can still internalize trades, apply markups, select among liquidity providers, reject orders, use last look, or hedge exposure selectively. The relevant issue is not whether a human dealer clicks a button. It is whether the broker is your counterparty, how it forms prices, and what happens after you submit an order.

Last look, slippage, and requotes

Last look is a final price, validity, credit, or risk check performed after a liquidity provider receives a request to trade at a displayed quote. It can take milliseconds and may result in acceptance, rejection, or execution at a changed price.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Last look is not automatically evidence of misconduct. The key issues are whether it is disclosed, why it is used, how long it takes, whether rejections are applied consistently, and whether it is being used for legitimate price and validity checks rather than to delay or selectively reject trades.

Slippage is the difference between the expected or displayed price and the actual fill. It can result from market movement, changing liquidity, latency, or multi-stage routing. Review whether the broker:

  • Passes positive slippage to clients.
  • Treats favorable and unfavorable price movement symmetrically.
  • Allows market orders to fill outside displayed prices.
  • Explains when a requote occurs.
  • Turns stop orders into market orders.
  • Has special rules for news, gaps, and illiquid markets.
  • Can cancel trades under broad or discretionary provisions.

Be cautious with clauses that allow the firm to cancel profitable trades at its discretion. Force-majeure language should identify genuine events rather than operate as a general waiver of execution obligations.

How to investigate a broker before depositing

  1. Identify the regulated entity. Check the exact legal name on the account agreement, not just the brand name. Confirm its authorization, jurisdiction, disciplinary history, and client-money protections.
  2. Find the counterparty. Search the customer agreement for terms such as “principal,” “agent,” “counterparty,” and “deal on own account.”
  3. Read the execution policy. Look for named venues, liquidity providers, price formation, order routing, rejections, partial fills, slippage, and last-look procedures.
  4. Ask about hedging. Does the broker hedge every trade, aggregate exposure, retain some flow, or change treatment by account or instrument?
  5. Calculate total costs. Include spread, commission, overnight financing, currency conversion, data or platform fees, and likely slippage.
  6. Test order handling. On a demo or small account, compare quoted and filled prices, execution speed, partial fills, stop behavior, and treatment during volatile periods. A demo result is not proof of live execution, but unexplained differences deserve questions.
  7. Keep records. Save the order ticket, execution report, displayed quote, account terms, and support responses if you need to investigate a disputed fill.

For U.S. customers, the CFTC advises checking a retail forex dealer’s registration and disciplinary history. It also warns that the dealer controls the platform and prices displayed on it; using a familiar third-party platform does not mean the account connects to a live exchange.

FAQ

Is an ECN broker better than a market maker?

Not automatically. Compare total cost, fill quality, slippage, rejection rates, financing, platform reliability, counterparty strength, and regulatory protections. An ECN label does not prove direct or anonymous matching, while a market maker can offer competitive execution if its pricing and conflicts are transparent.

Does STP mean my order goes directly to a bank?

No. STP means electronic processing or routing. The order might go to one liquidity provider, several providers, an ECN, another venue, or be handled internally under the broker’s model. Ask for the actual routing and rejection policy.

Can a market maker profit when I lose?

It can if it retains the relevant exposure, but it may instead hedge all or part of the position and earn spread or commission revenue. The broker’s hedging policy and contractual role matter more than the market-maker label alone.

Does DMA remove broker intervention?

No. DMA or DEA access remains subject to broker and venue controls, including margin, credit, order-size, price, and risk filters. Ask which venue receives the order and which controls the intermediary applies.

What is the difference between A-book and B-book?

A-book usually refers to passing or hedging client exposure externally. B-book usually refers to retaining exposure internally. A hybrid firm uses both. These are industry terms, not standardized regulatory categories.

What should I look for in a forex execution policy?

Look for the legal counterparty, price sources, execution venues, routing method, markup, spread and commission structure, slippage treatment, rejection and partial-fill rules, last look, stop-order handling, and procedures for volatile markets or outages.

The Bottom Line

Do not choose a forex broker from the word on its homepage. “ECN,” “STP,” and “DMA” describe technology or access arrangements; “market maker” more directly describes a pricing and counterparty role. Any broker can combine several of these functions.

The useful classification is the actual execution chain:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Who quotes?
Who receives the order?
Who is the legal counterparty?
Where is the trade executed?
Who can reject or reprice it?
Who bears the market risk?
How is the broker paid?

Verify those answers in the legal documents, execution policy, trade confirmations, and—where possible—your own live execution records. A clear explanation is more valuable than a supposedly superior label.
