Data note: The main ranking below is Forbes’ annual March 1, 2026 snapshot, released on March 10, 2026. Real-time figures may change whenever markets move or Forbes revises its estimates for private companies and other assets.

Forbes uses shared ranks when rounded fortunes are equal. For example, Jacqueline Mars and John Mars share No. 38, Gianluigi Aponte and Rafaela Aponte-Diamant share No. 44, and Alain and Gérard Wertheimer share No. 49. The next rank is consequently skipped rather than renumbered. Forbes’ top-200 table preserves those ties.
What changed from Forbes’ 2025 list?
| Measure | 2025 | 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Number of billionaires | 3,028 | 3,428 | +400 |
| Combined wealth | $16.1 trillion | $20.1 trillion | +$4 trillion |
| Average fortune | $5.3 billion | About $5.8 billion | Higher by about $0.5 billion |
| People worth at least $100 billion | 15 | 20 | +5 |
Forbes said 80% of the people who appeared on both the 2025 and 2026 lists were at least as rich as they had been the year before. The 2026 ranking also included 390 newcomers, the second-highest annual total after 2021’s 493. Meanwhile, 89 people fell off the list and 39 members of the prior list died.
The order at the top also changed. On the March 1 snapshot, Larry Page and Sergey Brin ranked ahead of Jeff Bezos, Larry Ellison and Mark Zuckerberg. Those positions reflect the values of the relevant technology shares and other assets on one particular date; they should not be read as permanent changes in business performance or personal wealth.
Why did billionaire wealth rise so sharply?
Forbes attributed the increase primarily to the boom in artificial-intelligence companies and related stocks, strong public-market performance, new private-company funding rounds and valuation marks, and wealth creation in manufacturing, technology and consumer businesses. Exchange rates and public-company share prices also affected the calculations. Forbes’ annual ranking coverage explains the broad drivers.
That explanation should be read as Forbes’ attribution, not as proof that one factor alone caused the $4 trillion increase. Much of the change can occur on paper: a public stock can rise without an owner selling shares, while a private-company funding round can establish a higher implied value for an existing stake. Neither event necessarily creates an equivalent amount of cash that the owner could withdraw immediately.
Technology and artificial intelligence dominate the wealth creation
Technology dominates the annual top 20. Musk, Page, Brin, Bezos, Zuckerberg, Ellison, Huang, Dell, Ballmer and Gates are all classified primarily in technology by Forbes.

- Technology: 468 billionaires with combined estimated wealth of $4.8 trillion.
- Artificial intelligence: At least 86 billionaires had fortunes tied substantially to AI, with combined wealth of $2.9 trillion.
- New AI billionaires: 45 people became billionaires during the prior year through AI-related businesses or holdings.
- Manufacturing newcomers: Manufacturing produced the most new billionaires, with 91.
- Technology newcomers: Technology produced 70 new billionaires.
The AI category includes both founders of AI companies and people whose existing technology fortunes benefited from demand for AI infrastructure, software or related services. A private AI funding round can produce a particularly large paper increase, so these estimates deserve more caution than a simple cash comparison. Forbes’ AI-billionaire coverage provides the sector details.
The $100 billion club
Forbes counted 20 people with 12-figure fortunes, commonly called the $100 billion club or centibillionaires. They collectively held approximately $3.8 trillion—about 19% of all wealth on the billionaire list—up from 15 members in 2025.
Every person in the annual top 20 qualifies. The threshold is based on Forbes’ estimated net worth at the March 1 snapshot, so membership can change as market values change.
Countries and territories with the most billionaires
Forbes’ country table uses separate entries for mainland China and Hong Kong. The figures below should therefore not be interpreted as a single ranking of citizenship: they are Forbes’ country/territory classifications for the people on its list.
| Country or territory | Billionaires | Combined wealth | Richest individual |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | 989 | $8.4 trillion | Elon Musk |
| China | 539 | $2.2 trillion | Zhang Yiming |
| India | 229 | About $1 trillion | Mukesh Ambani |
| Germany | 212 | About $1 trillion | Dieter Schwarz |
| Russia | 147 | $649 billion | Alexey Mordashov & family |
| Italy | 89 | $483 billion | Giancarlo Devasini |
| Canada | 82 | $457 billion | Changpeng Zhao |
| Hong Kong | 71 | $420 billion | Robin Zeng |
Why do Forbes articles sometimes say China has 610 billionaires? The 539 figure is for mainland China alone. When Hong Kong’s 71 billionaires are included, Forbes uses the broader “Greater China” total of 610. The figures are not contradictory; they use different geographic definitions. See Forbes’ country breakdown.
The United States leads both by number of billionaires and by combined wealth in this table. That does not mean it is the country where every listed billionaire’s companies operate or where all of their assets are held.
Richest women on the 2026 annual list
Richest woman: Alice Walton
Alice Walton ranks No. 14 overall with an estimated $134 billion. She inherited her fortune from Walmart founder Sam Walton and is the richest woman on the annual list.
Richest self-made woman: Rafaela Aponte-Diamant
Rafaela Aponte-Diamant is Forbes’ richest self-made woman, with an estimated fortune of $44.5 billion from her stake in Mediterranean Shipping Company.

Forbes’ women’s ranking provides the underlying figures.
Youngest billionaires
- Youngest overall: Amelie Voigt Trejes, age 20, who inherited wealth connected to Brazilian industrial-equipment maker WEG.
- Youngest self-made billionaires: Surya Midha, Brendan Foody and Adarsh Hiremath, all age 22 and cofounders of AI recruiting company Mercor.
- Youngest self-made woman: Luana Lopes Lara, age 29.
Forbes counted 35 billionaires under age 30. Ages in this section are the ages published for the annual ranking and may differ from a person’s age later in 2026. Read Forbes’ youngest-billionaires report.
Notable newcomers to the 2026 list
Among Forbes’ 390 newcomers were several people better known for entertainment, sports or public leadership than for traditional industrial wealth:
- Beyoncé Knowles-Carter: estimated at $1 billion.
- Dr. Dre: estimated at $1 billion.
- Roger Federer: estimated at $1.1 billion.
- James Cameron: estimated at $1.1 billion.
- Greg Abel: became a billionaire as he became Berkshire Hathaway’s CEO.
- Kimbal Musk: joined the list with wealth mainly tied to stakes in companies founded by his brother Elon Musk.
- Nicole Shanahan: was also among the new billionaires.
- Edwin Chen: founder of Surge AI and the richest newcomer, with an estimated $18 billion.
Forbes’ celebrity-billionaire category means people who became famous first and later accumulated billionaire fortunes. It does not include every wealthy person who happens to be famous. Forbes’ newcomers report and its celebrity-billionaires report explain the classifications.

The differences are expected. A public company’s share price can change every trading day, and exchange rates can alter the dollar value of assets. Forbes can also revise its estimates for private companies when new funding rounds, transactions or other evidence changes the implied value. As a result, a person’s rank can change without that person selling a business or receiving a new income payment.
For example, Forbes published a separate July 1, 2026 historical snapshot that put Musk at $1.053 trillion. That number belongs to the July snapshot and should not be presented as his current August 9 figure or as his March annual-list figure.
How Forbes calculates estimated net worth
Forbes ranks people it estimates have at least $1 billion in net worth. Its annual methodology uses stock prices and exchange rates from March 1, 2026, then examines a broad range of assets and liabilities.
Assets Forbes reviews
- Public-company shares and other publicly traded investments.
- Private-company stakes, valued using available funding rounds, reported transactions, comparable public companies or other evidence.
- Real estate, art, yachts, aircraft, ranches, vineyards, jewelry and car collections.
- Known debt and charitable giving, which reduce the estimate where Forbes can account for them.
Forbes says its research draws on SEC filings, regulatory documents, court filings, probate records, news reports and interviews with billionaires, employees, advisers, rivals and attorneys. These estimates can never be perfectly precise, particularly where ownership structures are private or assets are difficult to value.
Why estimated net worth is not cash
A billionaire’s estimated net worth may consist mostly of shares in a public company, a stake in a private business, real estate or other illiquid property. Selling a large public-company position could push down the share price, and a private-company stake may have no immediate buyer. Debt, taxes, contractual restrictions and market impact would also affect how much cash an owner could actually realize.
Accordingly, it is inaccurate to say Musk has $839 billion in the bank or that any person on this list could instantly spend their stated fortune. Forbes is estimating the market value of assets minus known liabilities, not measuring cash balances, annual income or compensation.
How Forbes treats families
Forbes generally lists individuals rather than entire multigenerational families. It includes certain spouse and children’s wealth when it is tied to the founder or immediate family of a fortune, and labels those entries with “& family.” That applies to entries such as Bernard Arnault & family, Carlos Slim Helu & family and the Walton family listings.
The label does not necessarily mean Forbes has calculated one completely undivided family balance sheet. Conversely, Forbes may exclude dispersed family wealth when it cannot reasonably attribute that wealth to one person or immediate-family group.
Self-made and inherited fortunes
“Self-made” is also a Forbes classification. It distinguishes inherited, self-created and mixed fortunes, but the categories do not settle broader questions about family capital, education, networks, early opportunities or inherited business advantages. Mixed cases can reasonably attract debate, as the Kimbal Musk example illustrates.
How Forbes’ list compares with other wealth rankings
Forbes and Bloomberg can show different net worths or rankings because they may use different valuation judgments, ownership assumptions, currency conversions, market data and update times. A comparison is meaningful only when the dates and methodologies are identified. Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index is a separate daily ranking, not a second version of Forbes’ annual list.

Who is the richest woman in the world on the Forbes 2026 list?
Alice Walton is the richest woman on the annual list, with an estimated $134 billion. Forbes says she inherited the fortune from Walmart founder Sam Walton.
Why does Forbes show different figures from Bloomberg?
The publications use separate methodologies and may update at different times. Differences can also arise from assumptions about private-company stakes, public holdings, debt, currency and family ownership.
Does billionaire net worth mean cash?
No. It is an estimated value of assets such as company shares, private-business stakes and real estate, minus known debt and adjusted for charitable giving where Forbes can account for it. Much of the wealth may be illiquid.
Are family fortunes counted together?
Sometimes. Forbes generally ranks individuals but includes certain immediate-family holdings and labels those entries “& family.” The label does not necessarily represent one fully consolidated family balance sheet.
Who is the youngest billionaire?
Amelie Voigt Trejes, age 20, was the youngest person on Forbes’ annual 2026 list. The youngest self-made billionaires were Surya Midha, Brendan Foody and Adarsh Hiremath, all 22-year-old cofounders of Mercor.

Forbes counted 989 in the United States, 539 in mainland China and 229 in India. Its separate Hong Kong entry had 71 billionaires; including Hong Kong, Forbes describes the broader Greater China total as 610.
