Fixed-rate vs easy-access savings accounts when UK interest rates may change

Choose easy access for emergency cash or money you may need before a known date. Choose a fixed-rate bond only for money you can leave untouched for the entire term. A fixed bond guarantees its agreed rate and maturity value, so it protects you if rates fall. An easy-access account normally has a variable rate, so it can benefit sooner if rates rise and can usually be switched when a better deal appears. A split between both types can avoid making one all-or-nothing rate call.

The decision in brief

These accounts solve different problems. Easy-access savings buy flexibility: you can normally withdraw without giving up a large amount of interest, although providers may impose limits, notice periods or bonus conditions. The rate is variable and can be reduced after a Bank Rate cut. A fixed-rate savings bond buys certainty: the rate is set when you open it and the maturity value can be calculated in advance, but your money may be tied up for six months to five years and early withdrawal may be unavailable or expensive.

If UK rates fall, the fixed account keeps the contracted return while an easy-access rate may be cut. If rates rise, easy access can respond sooner, while the fixed saver remains on its original rate until maturity. That is the practical consequence of a variable-rate contract versus a fixed-rate contract; it is not a forecast of what rates will do.

How each account works

Easy-access savings

  • Rate: variable annual equivalent rate (AER), subject to the provider’s terms.
  • Access: intended for withdrawals when needed, but check whether there is a monthly withdrawal cap, a notice requirement or a rate bonus that disappears after a withdrawal.
  • Flexibility: you can usually move the balance to another account if a better rate appears.
  • Best use: emergency funds, bills and spending with an uncertain date.

MoneyHelper notes that the top savings rate can change several times a day as banks compete. A rate shown today is therefore not a promise that it will remain available tomorrow, and a bonus may apply only for a limited period or balance range.

Fixed-rate savings bonds

  • Rate: fixed AER for the stated term.
  • Term: commonly six months to five years, depending on the product.
  • Access: often no withdrawals until maturity. Where access is allowed, the provider may charge an interest penalty or reduce the amount you receive.
  • Funding: many bonds accept one deposit at opening and do not allow further additions; the individual product’s terms decide this.
  • Best use: money that can remain untouched for the complete term and for which a guaranteed outcome matters more than the option to switch.

What a Bank of England rate change means for your savings

When Bank Rate falls

Variable easy-access rates commonly move down after a Bank Rate reduction, although the timing and size of a change are set by each provider. Your interest can therefore fall while your balance remains in the same account. A fixed bond is insulated from that change until maturity: the agreed rate continues even if new bonds are launched at lower rates.

When Bank Rate rises

An easy-access provider may raise its rate, allowing you to earn more without waiting for a term to end. You may also be able to switch to a newly launched account. A fixed bond does not reprice during its term, so you keep the old rate and could miss higher offers. Exiting early, if permitted, can be costly enough to erase the benefit.

Why fixed rates move before an official decision

Fixed-rate pricing reflects market expectations about future interest rates rather than only today’s Bank Rate. The Bank of England says its deposit-rate series are weighted monthly averages and identifies the two-year overnight index swap (OIS) rate as a reference for fixed-rate savings bonds. Observations in its April 2026 report were provisional to 22 April 2026, so they provide context for how pricing works, not an October 2026 quote.

Side-by-side comparison

Question Easy access Fixed-rate bond
Rate certainty Variable AER; provider can change it under the account terms. Guaranteed for the agreed term.
Term No fixed maturity; the account continues until you close it or the provider changes its terms. Typically six months to five years; exact term is product-specific.
Withdrawals Normally available, subject to any stated limits or notice period. Often unavailable until maturity; permitted withdrawals may trigger a substantial interest penalty.
Adding money Usually possible, but the provider may set balance or funding rules. Often a single opening deposit; further additions are not stated and must be checked in the terms.
Tax treatment Interest outside an ISA counts towards your Personal Savings Allowance (PSA) and taxable income. The same tax rules apply outside an ISA; fixing does not make interest tax-free.
Minimum deposit Not stated generally; varies by provider. Not stated generally; varies by provider.
Maturity No maturity date; you continue, close or switch the account. At maturity, the provider may move the money to a variable account or offer a renewal option. Check the notice window and the rate that will apply.
Deposit protection Eligible deposits count towards the FSCS limit for the authorised firm. The same FSCS rules apply.

Match the account to when you need the money

Emergency fund

Keep the amount needed for urgent repairs, job loss or unexpected bills in easy access. A high fixed rate is not useful if accessing the money forces you to lose interest or wait for maturity. If you hold more than one easy-access account, check each withdrawal rule rather than assuming all are instant.

Known spending date

For a house deposit, tax bill or tuition payment with a date that falls after the bond’s maturity, a fixed term can make the eventual amount predictable. Leave a separate cash buffer for costs that could arise earlier, and allow time for the maturity payment to reach your current account.

Longer-term cash with no fixed goal

Consider whether you value a guaranteed return more than the ability to move quickly. A split approach can place the portion you can lock away in a bond while keeping the remainder variable. This reduces the risk of fixing everything immediately before rates rise or leaving everything variable immediately before rates fall.

Compare the return rather than the headline AER

Use the maturity amount, tax position and access cost together. For a fixed bond, calculate the interest promised over the complete term and ask what penalty applies if circumstances change. For easy access, model a lower rate after a possible cut instead of assuming today’s AER lasts indefinitely. Then compare the two outcomes with the value of being able to switch.

A simple comparison is:

  • Fixed option: deposit × the provider’s stated maturity calculation, less any tax due outside an ISA.
  • Easy-access option: expected balance using a range of plausible variable rates, less tax due, while retaining the ability to move the money.

Do not treat the figures as a forecast. They are decision scenarios. The fixed rate is known; the future easy-access rate is not. Also check whether interest is paid monthly, annually or only at maturity. Payment timing can affect which tax year receives the interest and therefore which allowance applies.

Tax rules for 2026/27

Personal Savings Allowance

For the 2026/27 tax year, MoneyHelper lists a PSA of £1,000 for basic-rate taxpayers and £500 for higher-rate taxpayers. Eligible low-income savers may also have a £5,000 starting-rate band. The PSA is not a separate cash payment: it is the amount of non-ISA savings interest that can be received before income tax is due at the relevant rate. Additional-rate taxpayers do not receive a PSA.

Your total taxable interest can include interest from several accounts, so keep records of the payment date and amount. A fixed bond that pays all interest at maturity can create a larger amount in one tax year than a similar account paying monthly.

Cash ISAs

The 2026/27 Cash ISA subscription limit is £20,000. Interest in a Cash ISA is tax-free and does not use the PSA. If you move an existing ISA, ask the new provider to perform the transfer. Withdrawing the money and redepositing it yourself can use your annual subscription allowance and may lose the tax-free status of the transferred amount, depending on the circumstances and ISA type.

Protect deposits under the FSCS limit

Eligible deposits are protected up to £120,000 per person per authorised firm under the current guidance cited by MoneyHelper. A joint account has protection of up to £240,000 in total. The limit applies to the banking licence, not to each trading name: brands sharing one authorisation are aggregated.

A practical opening and review checklist

  1. Ring-fence essentials: calculate emergency cash and near-term spending before considering a fixed term.
  2. Check the complete rate: record the AER, whether it is a temporary bonus, the minimum and maximum balance, and when the rate can change.
  3. Read access terms: confirm withdrawal limits, notice periods, early-closure rules and the exact penalty calculation.
  4. Check funding rules: note the minimum deposit, whether additions are allowed and the final date for paying in.
  5. Check tax handling: identify whether interest is paid monthly, annually or at maturity and whether an ISA is more suitable.
  6. Check protection: verify authorisation and aggregate balances under the £120,000 per-firm limit.
  7. Set a maturity reminder: put the maturity date and any renewal deadline in your calendar so the balance does not roll into an unattractive variable account unnoticed.
  8. Recheck variable savings: after a provider notice or Bank Rate change, compare the new rate with available alternatives and move only after checking access and protection.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Fixing the emergency fund: keep accessible cash separate from money intended for a bond.
  • Chasing a headline rate: include bonuses, balance caps, eligibility and withdrawal conditions in the comparison.
  • Assuming a fixed bond is always safer: the rate is certain, but access risk remains if your plans change.
  • Ignoring maturity handling: confirm what happens on the maturity date and the provider’s deadline for giving alternative instructions.
  • Concentrating deposits: calculate balances by authorised firm, not by brand name.
  • Using stale comparisons: MoneySavingExpert’s page updated 11 September 2026 lists live examples, but savings rates are volatile; recheck the rate at publication and again when you apply. Comparison sites can differ, so read the provider’s own terms.

When a fixed bond is worth it

A fixed-rate bond is a reasonable choice when all three conditions hold: you can leave the money untouched through the whole term, the after-tax guaranteed return meets your goal, and certainty is worth giving up the option to switch. It is less suitable when your spending date is uncertain, when you may need emergency access, or when you expect to benefit from rising rates and would regret being unable to move the money.

Frequently asked questions

Can I open both types of account?

Yes. Holding an easy-access reserve alongside a fixed bond is often a practical way to separate liquidity from money intended for a guaranteed term return. Apply the tax and FSCS checks to the combined balances.

Does a fixed rate guarantee the amount I will receive?

It guarantees the contractual rate and maturity calculation, subject to the product’s deposit, interest-payment and tax terms. It does not guarantee that the fixed rate will beat future variable rates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when my bond matures?

Review the maturity notice, compare the offered renewal rate with current alternatives, and decide where the money is needed next. If you do nothing, the provider may transfer it to a variable account under its stated terms.

No. Rates, bonuses, eligibility and withdrawal conditions can change, and an account may be withdrawn before you apply. Verify the provider’s live terms and authorisation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a fixed-rate bond worth locking money away?

It can be, if you can leave the deposit untouched for the full term and value a guaranteed maturity amount more than the ability to switch. Keep emergency and uncertain-date money outside the bond.

What happens to easy-access savings after a Bank Rate cut?

The account’s variable rate may be reduced, although each provider decides the timing and size of the change. Check the notice and compare alternatives.

Can I transfer an existing Cash ISA to a fixed account?

Use the receiving provider’s ISA transfer process. Do not withdraw and redeposit unless you have confirmed the tax consequences and available allowance.
