Choose a recurring deposit (RD) when your savings will arrive in regular instalments, such as from a monthly salary. Neither product is automatically superior. The correct choice depends on when your money becomes available, when you need it, the bank’s applicable rate and maturity calculation, early-closure rules, and how your deposits fit within the ₹5 lakh DICGC insurance limit per depositor per bank.
FD or RD: the decision in one view
An FD accepts a principal amount at opening for a selected tenure. An RD accepts a series of instalments on a schedule set by the bank. Both are generally treated as term deposits, but the money is invested for different lengths of time. That timing difference means you should not compare an FD and an RD by looking only at the headline annual rate.

| Question | FD | RD | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| When is your money available? | A lump sum is available now | You will save periodically | Minimum opening amount, instalment amount and payment frequency |
| How is money invested? | The principal is placed at the start of the term | Each instalment is placed when it is paid | Bank’s interest-credit or compounding method |
| What determines the goal date? | Choose a tenure ending near the date you need the money | Choose both an instalment schedule and a tenure ending near the date you need the money | Maturity date, automatic renewal and payout instructions |
| What happens if you need cash early? | Premature closure can reduce interest and trigger a penalty | Early closure, missed instalments and penalties follow product-specific terms | Full and partial closure rules before opening |
| Is the deposit insured? | Yes, subject to DICGC rules | Yes, subject to DICGC rules | Aggregate deposits with the same bank and depositor capacity |
| Can the rate alone identify the better option? | No | No | Compare maturity values for the same goal date and contribution plan |
What a fixed deposit is
With an FD, you deposit a specified amount once and select a fixed period. The bank records the principal, applicable interest rate, maturity date and payout instructions. Depending on the scheme, interest may be paid periodically or accumulated and paid at maturity. The exact calculation and crediting convention are bank-specific.

When an FD is usually the practical fit
- You have the whole amount today and do not need to build it from future income.
- Your target date is clear enough to select a matching tenure.
- You prefer one opening transaction rather than a recurring payment obligation.
- You can keep the principal untouched or have checked the cost of closing early.
What a recurring deposit is
An RD lets you commit to a regular instalment, commonly monthly, for a specified tenure. The first instalment is invested earlier than the last, so each instalment earns interest for a different period. The bank’s RD calculator or maturity statement should incorporate that schedule; multiplying the total instalments by an FD rate is not a valid return calculation.
R&D? No. A recurring deposit is a bank deposit product, not an investment fund or a market-linked account. The bank’s terms determine the due date, grace period, treatment of delayed or missed instalments, and consequences of closing before maturity.
When an RD is usually the practical fit
- Your savings capacity arrives over time, such as a fixed amount from each salary.
- You want a forced-savings mechanism for a planned expense.
- You do not currently have the full target amount to place in one transaction.
- You can maintain the instalment schedule for the chosen tenure.
Why RBI classifies both within term deposits
The Reserve Bank of India’s 2015 Master Direction on Interest Rate on Deposits defines a term deposit as a deposit received for a fixed period and withdrawable only after that period. The definition expressly includes “Recurring/Cumulative/Annuity/Reinvestment deposits, Cash Certificates, and so on.” This classification matters because term-deposit disclosure and premature-withdrawal rules apply, while the detailed rate, tenure and calculation method remain in the bank’s product terms.
The same direction allows banks to adopt an interest-calculation methodology but requires them to inform depositors about it when accepting the deposit and to display the information. Before comparing products, obtain the bank’s current rate card, maturity calculation and account terms rather than relying on a generic FD or RD label.
The timing effect: why equal contributions do not produce equal returns
Suppose two savers each plan to contribute the same total amount by a future date. The FD saver places the full amount at the beginning; the RD saver places smaller amounts at successive dates. The FD principal therefore has more time to earn interest. That does not make the FD universally better: the FD requires the lump sum immediately, while the RD may be the only way to reach the target without borrowing or leaving cash idle.
Use this conceptual comparison:
- FD: one principal amount × the bank’s stated method for the full tenure.
- RD: each instalment × the bank’s stated method for the time from that instalment’s credit date to maturity.
The bank may quote annualised rates that look identical for an FD and an RD, yet the maturity amounts differ because the deposit dates differ. A meaningful comparison holds the following constant: bank, depositor eligibility, goal date, total planned contributions and whether the displayed value is before tax.

How to compare an FD and an RD step by step
- Write down the goal date. Use the date you expect to pay for the goal, not merely the date you might start saving. Include a buffer if the date is uncertain.
- Map your cash flow. Record the amount available today, the amount you can save each period, and any irregular income. A current lump sum points to an FD comparison; a periodic surplus points to an RD comparison.
- Set a like-for-like contribution target. For an FD, identify the principal you can actually deposit now. For an RD, multiply the proposed instalment by the number of scheduled instalments, then verify the bank’s maturity figure for that schedule.
- Check the bank’s current rate and calculation. Confirm tenure, compounding or interest-credit frequency, senior-citizen or other eligibility assumptions, and whether the quote is a pre-tax amount.
- Read liquidity terms. Find the full-closure penalty, partial-withdrawal availability, interest-rate reset on early closure, notice requirements and treatment of missed RD instalments.
- Check maturity instructions. Decide whether the deposit should be paid to your linked account or renewed. An automatic renewal can move your money into a new tenure if you do not act by the maturity date.
- Check insurance aggregation. Add all covered deposits you hold with that bank in the same depositor capacity, including principal and interest, before deciding how much to place there.
- Save the records. Keep the confirmation, rate, maturity amount, nominee details, penalty schedule and maturity instructions where you can retrieve them.
Comparing returns without a misleading shortcut
Ask the bank for two maturity values based on your actual plan: one for the FD principal available now and one for the RD instalment schedule. Use the same intended maturity date. If the bank’s tools use different dates, ask for an explanation before treating the figures as comparable.
Information the calculator should show
- Principal or instalment amount and the number of instalments.
- Interest rate, tenure and whether the rate is annualised.
- Compounding or interest-credit convention.
- Maturity date and maturity amount.
- Any assumed eligibility category.
- Whether the amount shown is before tax or after any deduction.
Do not infer a universal “which gives more interest” answer from the rate alone. An FD can have a higher maturity value when the full principal is available from day one; an RD can be the appropriate product when contributions occur monthly. The relevant result is the amount each product produces from the cash you can actually commit and the date you actually need it.
Liquidity, premature closure and missed instalments
Read the exit terms before opening either product. The Reserve Bank of India’s 2025 FAQs on the Master Direction say banks may levy premature-withdrawal penalties under a board-approved policy, and that the penalty components should be disclosed when the deposit is accepted. The FAQ also says the procedure for partial premature withdrawal is determined by the bank’s policy.
In practical terms, closing an FD early may mean that the bank recalculates interest for the period the deposit actually remained open, applies a lower applicable rate and deducts the disclosed penalty. An RD may have additional consequences if instalments are late or skipped, including charges, a reduced maturity amount or closure under the bank’s rules. Do not assume an RD can be paused without cost or that an FD can be broken at the original rate.
Questions to ask the bank before committing
- Is full premature closure available, and how is interest recalculated?
- Is partial withdrawal allowed, and what minimum balance or procedure applies?
- What happens after one missed RD instalment? After several?
- Is there a grace period, and is a charge collected for a delayed payment?
- Can the deposit be pledged or transferred, and are there restrictions?
- How will the bank communicate maturity and renewal?
Callable and non-callable deposits: the ₹1 crore threshold
A Reserve Bank of India circular dated October 26, 2023 states that domestic term deposits accepted from individuals for ₹1 crore or less must have a premature-withdrawal facility. Banks may offer non-callable deposits under the applicable rules above that amount. The ₹1 crore figure is a regulatory threshold, not a promise that every product above it is non-callable or that every bank uses identical terms.
Confirm the current consolidated terms for the specific FD or RD, especially if your deposit is large or your institution labels a product “non-callable.” The product disclosure should tell you whether early access exists and what conditions apply.

Deposit insurance: the ₹5 lakh aggregate limit
The Department of Financial Services states that DICGC insurance covers savings, fixed, current and recurring bank deposits together up to ₹5 lakh for a depositor, including principal and interest. This is an aggregate limit for deposits held with the same bank in the same depositor capacity; it is not a separate ₹5 lakh allowance for each FD and each RD.
For example, if your savings account, FD and RD are all covered deposits at one bank and in the same ownership capacity, their principal and accrued interest are considered together for the limit. Accounts held in genuinely different depositor capacities can be treated differently under DICGC rules, so verify the institution’s coverage and the current DICGC guidance rather than assuming that changing the account number creates new insurance.
Choosing by savings goal
You already have a lump sum for a known date
Start with FD tenures that mature shortly before the payment is due. Compare the maturity value, renewal instruction and early-closure cost. Keep any emergency cash outside the FD if accessing the deposit early would be expensive or inconvenient.

You are saving monthly from income
Start with an RD whose instalment date follows your income date and whose tenure ends near the goal. Check whether the bank allows a payment date that matches your cash flow and what happens when a salary delay causes a missed instalment.
You have a partial lump sum and future monthly savings
There is no requirement to force all money into one product. You can compare an FD for the available lump sum with an RD for future contributions, while checking the combined deposit-insurance exposure and the separate maturity dates. Keep the goal accounting clear so you know which deposit funds which expense.
Your goal is short term or the date is uncertain
Prioritise access terms and a maturity date that does not leave you waiting for funds. A slightly higher quoted rate may not compensate for a penalty or an inconvenient maturity date. Ask whether the bank offers a shorter tenure or a callable option that matches the uncertainty.

Your goal is long term but contributions may change
An RD creates a fixed commitment. If your income is variable, read the missed-instalment and closure provisions first. An FD may be simpler if you can wait until you have a lump sum, but delaying deposits also delays interest accrual; compare the actual cash-flow paths rather than an abstract rate.
Tax and documentation: what not to assume
Do not assume that an FD or RD is tax-free, tax-equivalent or subject to the same withholding treatment in every situation. The outcome can depend on the tax year, interest amount, account ownership, applicable exemptions and your personal circumstances. Obtain current guidance from the relevant tax authority or a qualified adviser, and ask the bank whether its displayed maturity figure is before tax.
Retain interest certificates, account statements and the original deposit advice. Match the bank’s reported interest with your records, particularly when a deposit crosses a financial year or renews automatically.
Opening checklist
- Confirm that the institution is a covered bank and identify the depositor capacity.
- Record the principal or instalment, tenure, rate and maturity date.
- Read the interest-calculation and crediting method.
- Read full and partial premature-closure terms.
- For an RD, record the instalment due date, grace period and missed-payment charge.
- Check nomination, linked-account and communication details.
- Choose payout at maturity or renewal deliberately; do not leave the instruction ambiguous.
- Add the deposit to your ₹5 lakh DICGC exposure calculation for that bank.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Comparing only the advertised rate
Problem: The rate does not show how long each rupee is invested. Correction: Compare bank-generated maturity values using your actual dates and contributions.
Using an FD for money that may be needed next week
Problem: Early closure can reduce interest and incur a disclosed penalty. Correction: Keep near-term spending and emergency reserves liquid, then place only the surplus in a term deposit.

Ignoring automatic renewal
Problem: Funds can roll into a new tenure after maturity. Correction: Set a calendar reminder and verify the maturity instruction in writing.
Treating an RD instalment as optional
Problem: The bank may charge for missed payments or alter the maturity outcome. Correction: Align the due date with your income and read the exact default procedure before opening.
Assuming a non-callable label has no conditions
Problem: Callability depends on the product and current rules. Correction: Read the bank’s consolidated terms and confirm the ₹1 crore threshold’s relevance to your deposit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical decision rule
Use an FD if all three statements are true: the money is available now, the maturity date fits your goal, and you can accept the early-closure terms. Use an RD if all three are true: the money will arrive periodically, you can maintain the instalment schedule, and the maturity date fits your goal. If neither set is true, adjust the tenure or keep part of the money outside the deposit until the cash-flow and access requirements are clear.
The strongest comparison is therefore personal rather than universal: same bank, same goal date, same eligibility assumptions, actual contribution schedule, current maturity calculation, documented exit terms and a deposit-insurance check. Once those items match, the product whose structure fits your cash flow is usually the more useful choice, even when its headline rate is not the highest.
