Five Authors to Try When You Want to Start Reading More

If you want to start reading more, choose a book by the kind of story you already enjoy rather than searching for one “best” author. World Book Night’s 2026 Quick Reads list offers short, adult-focused books in an accessible style; this guide selects five of its six named authors to give you crime, general fiction and historical fiction starting points.

Five authors to put on your shortlist

The lineup below is a practical selection, not a ranking. It uses the genres identified by World Book Night and keeps the first choice manageable by focusing on its Quick Reads titles. The source names six authors in total; Derek Owusu’s Hunger Pains is a legitimate sixth option, but these five create a broader spread across crime, fiction and historical fiction.

Author and listed title Genre identified by World Book Night When this is the clearest starting point What is not established in the listing
Leye Adenle — Cell One Crime You already want a crime story or a plot-led entry into reading. Individual word count, reading level and series status are not stated.
Rachel Hore — The Girl in the Picture Fiction You want a general-fiction option without choosing a specialist genre. The Quick Reads page does not give a detailed premise, length or content notes.
Louise Jensen — The Woman Next Door Fiction You prefer to begin with another general-fiction choice and compare publisher descriptions before buying or borrowing. Plot, length, reading level and series status are not stated on the cited list.
Carmel Harrington — The Last Bench Fiction You want a third general-fiction route so the premise, rather than a genre label, can decide. The listing does not establish its themes, content notes or individual length.
Rosie Goodwin — Sweet Charity Historical fiction You are drawn to stories set in the past or usually pick historical fiction. No period, word count, reading level or series information is supplied by the listing.

Why Quick Reads can be a sensible first step

World Book Night, run by The Reading Agency, describes Quick Reads as “short books and great stories by bestselling authors, written in an accessible and easy to read style.” Its fuller description says: “Quick Reads provide a route into reading that prioritises great story telling and adult-focused content while ensuring the books are written in an accessible and easy to read style.” That is a description of the programme, not a guarantee that every reader will find every title easy.

The page does not publish a word count, reading-level score or page count for each of the five books. Treat “short” and “accessible” as the organiser’s overall positioning, then check the current edition, format and sample pages through a library catalogue, bookseller or publisher before committing money. No measured result is provided showing that any one of these authors makes people read more, so choose on fit rather than a promise of habit change.

Choose by the story you already want

If crime is the reason you want to read

Start with Leye Adenle’s Cell One. Crime gives you a clear selection rule: you are not asking yourself to develop a taste for an unfamiliar type of book at the same time as you are rebuilding a reading routine. Before borrowing or buying, read the current description and opening pages to confirm that its tone suits you. The evidence available here establishes the crime genre and the title’s place on the Quick Reads list; it does not establish a specific plot, intensity level or series commitment.

If you want general fiction

Rachel Hore’s The Girl in the Picture, Louise Jensen’s The Woman Next Door and Carmel Harrington’s The Last Bench are all listed as fiction. That shared label is useful but broad. The available listing does not verify enough of each premise to claim that one is lighter, more suspenseful, more romantic or more suitable for a particular age group.

For these three, make the choice from the edition you can actually access: compare the publisher or library description, read a few pages, and select the one that creates the strongest curiosity. A personal connection to the setting, subject or voice is a better reason to begin than an assumed ranking. If the first sample does not hold your attention, switch titles without treating that as a failure of reading.

If historical fiction is your natural preference

Rosie Goodwin’s Sweet Charity is the historical-fiction option in this five-author selection. Historical fiction can provide an immediate anchor for readers who enjoy a particular period or social setting, but the Quick Reads listing does not state which period the book uses or provide content notes. Confirm those details in the current publisher or library description before choosing an edition.

How to make the first choice without overthinking it

  1. Name the attraction. Write down one sentence such as “I want a crime story” or “I usually enjoy historical fiction.” If you cannot name a genre, choose the fiction title whose current description makes you most curious.
  2. Check the exact edition. Search the author and full title together. Confirm that the record is the book you intend to read, because formats, page counts and availability can differ by country and edition.
  3. Use a sample before paying. Read the opening pages through a library service, preview tool or physical copy when available. This tests writing style more reliably than a broad genre label.
  4. Decide on a low-cost route. Borrow first if your budget or confidence is limited. A library loan, a friend’s copy or a used book lets you test the author without buying several titles at once.
  5. Commit to one book only. Do not build a five-book stack before you know which style keeps you turning pages. Keep the other names as backup choices.

A manageable reading routine

Set a session that is small enough to repeat

Start with a fixed, modest appointment: for example, ten minutes after breakfast or a few pages before bed. The exact duration is yours to set; the point is to remove the daily negotiation about when reading will happen. Keep the book where the session occurs and silence the most obvious interruptions.

Use stopping points deliberately

Stop at the end of a chapter, scene or natural break rather than forcing yourself to finish a large block. Mark the page or use the reading app’s position indicator so restarting requires no memory work. If you stop in the middle of a section, leave a one-line note about what is happening.

Measure consistency, not speed

A simple calendar mark or note of the date and pages read can show whether the routine is happening. It is not a test score. Avoid converting the log into a target that makes a missed day feel like a reason to quit.

Give yourself a switching rule

Decide in advance how long you will sample a book—perhaps two or three sessions. If the premise, voice or subject is not working after that trial, move to another title on the shortlist. Finishing a book is not the only legitimate outcome of an experiment.

Buying and borrowing with a personal-finance mindset

Starting to read more does not require buying every recommended title. Check a public-library catalogue first, including digital lending if that is available in your area. Used copies and book swaps can reduce the cost further. If you buy, purchase one test copy rather than a complete series or a bundle; the evidence here does not establish series status for these titles.

World Book Night points readers to Bookshop.org as a place to buy books in support of The Reading Agency and local bookshops. That statement does not establish affiliate terms, commissions or availability in every country. For any retailer, search the exact author and title, confirm the edition and review delivery or return conditions before paying.

Common mistakes when restarting a reading habit

  • Choosing by reputation alone: A famous name is not automatically the right match. Start with the genre or premise that interests you now.
  • Confusing “accessible” with “right for everyone”: Quick Reads are designed around an easy-to-read style, but taste, concentration and content preferences still vary.
  • Assuming all five books are equally short: The organiser describes the programme generally; individual word counts and page counts are not provided here.
  • Buying before checking the premise: The three general-fiction titles need a current description or sample to distinguish them responsibly.
  • Turning a reading log into a punishment: Tracking is useful only if it helps you return to the book. A missed session is a scheduling problem, not proof that you cannot read.
  • Calling a title a failure too quickly: Try the switching rule you set, then choose another author. Different writing styles can produce very different experiences.

What the five-author list can and cannot tell you

It can give you a supported set of entry points: crime through Adenle, historical fiction through Goodwin and three general-fiction options through Hore, Jensen and Harrington. It can also point you toward a format that World Book Night explicitly positions as short, adult-focused and accessible.

It cannot tell you which author will become your favourite, how many pages you will read, whether a particular title is suitable for a specific sensitivity, or whether reading one book will create a lasting habit. Those decisions require the current book description, a sample and your own response to the writing.

A practical first move

Pick the row in the table that matches your existing interest, verify the current edition through a library or bookseller, and schedule one short session with that single book. If crime is your clear preference, begin with Cell One; if you want historical fiction, try Sweet Charity; otherwise compare the descriptions and opening pages of The Girl in the Picture, The Woman Next Door and The Last Bench. The goal is not to declare a universal best author. It is to remove the first decision barrier and give yourself a realistic, affordable way to discover what you want to read next.
