First Brands founder and CEO Patrick James resigned from all positions at the company on October 12, 2025, according to a court complaint; The Associated Press reported the departure the following day and said Chief Restructuring Officer Charles Moore would serve as interim CEO. First Brands had filed for bankruptcy on September 28. The resignation came before the Justice Department announced criminal charges against James in January 2026; those charges are allegations, not a finding of guilt.

In short, October 12 is the resignation date given in the court complaint; October 13 is the date of AP’s report. The sources reviewed do not establish a separate company announcement date.
Who replaced James, and what does “interim” mean here?
AP identified Charles Moore as the interim successor. Moore had been First Brands’ chief restructuring officer, a role focused on guiding the company through its restructuring process. “Interim” signals a temporary appointment; the available reporting does not identify a permanent successor.
What is First Brands, and why was the bankruptcy significant?
First Brands is an automotive aftermarket supplier that developed, marketed, and sold replacement brakes, filters, wipers, and lights under multiple brand names, according to the Justice Department. Its bankruptcy filing preceded James’s departure by about two weeks.
The debtors’ adversary complaint described approximately $5 billion in annual net sales and about $12 million in cash in corporate bank accounts on the bankruptcy petition date. These are figures stated in a court pleading, not independently verified financial findings. The complaint also discusses substantial financing liabilities. What criminal charges were announced, and what do they establish?
On January 29, 2026, the Justice Department announced that an indictment charged Patrick James and his brother Edward James with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and bank fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and multiple counts of wire fraud and bank fraud. The indictment alleges schemes involving invoices, collateral, financial statements, and concealed liabilities. Source: U.S. Department of Justice.
These are allegations in an indictment, not proof of guilt or a conviction. First Brands’ separate adversary complaint also alleges misconduct by James and others; a complaint is one party’s claims, not an adjudicated finding. The sources described here do not establish a conviction or final determination of liability.

What is the latest reported bankruptcy status?
A third-party bankruptcy docket index showed a Chapter 7 conversion order among filings through October 1, 2026. That is a report from the index, not a review of the conversion order itself. It does not establish the final liquidation outcome, how much creditors will recover, or developments after October 1, 2026. Source: bankruptcy docket index.
