There is no single FEMA rule for every “foreign payment.” The legal treatment follows what the money represents—such as export proceeds for goods or services, a personal or family remittance, or another permitted transaction. A direct bank transfer and an online payment platform are only delivery routes. Neither route, by itself, proves that the underlying FEMA, export-reporting, bank-classification or documentary requirements have been met.

For an India-based recipient, the safest approach is to identify the transaction purpose first, then ask the receiving authorised-dealer (AD) bank how it will classify, document and reconcile the receipt. If an online intermediary is involved, verify the actual collecting entity, its current RBI status for the relevant activity, the settlement path into India and the information that will reach the AD bank. This guide reflects the RBI instruments and amendments listed as current in October 2026; rules and provider permissions can change.

What FEMA is deciding when you receive money from abroad

FEMA does not create one blanket category called “foreign payment.” The purpose and structure of the transaction determine the obligations. Before choosing a route, write down what the payment is for and who is paying.

Export of goods or services

Money owed by an overseas customer for goods or services supplied from India is an export receipt. The Indian AD bank handling the export documents has a central role in checking the receipt, linking it to the export transaction and completing the bank’s required reporting or reconciliation. A transfer that simply lands in an Indian account does not automatically close those obligations.

Personal or family remittance

A gift, maintenance payment or other personal remittance is a different category from business export proceeds. The bank may request information about the sender, relationship, purpose and source of funds, and may apply separate limits or reporting rules. Do not describe a business invoice payment as a “personal remittance” merely because a platform offers that label.

Other permitted transactions

Investment-related receipts, refunds, loan proceeds, education or medical payments and other categories can have their own FEMA conditions. If the purpose does not fit a normal export or personal-remittance description, ask the AD bank for the correct classification before accepting funds.

Which RBI rules are current in 2026?

The Reserve Bank of India’s Foreign Exchange Management Act notification index, consulted on October 12, 2026, lists the Foreign Exchange Management (Export and Import of Goods and Services) Regulations, 2026, including an amendment dated September 22, 2026 and a further amendment dated September 25, 2026. It also lists the Foreign Exchange Management (Manner of Receipt and Payment) Regulations, 2023, amended on February 12, 2025.

Use the current instruments and check the index for later changes. Older online articles often cite the 2016 Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations. That 2016 text is a superseded baseline, not the current governing regulation; the old notification remains on the RBI site only as a historical reference at this page.

RBI has also published a document titled Draft – Export and Import of Goods and Services. It contains placeholder dates and notification numbers and is expressly a draft, so it is evidence of a proposed framework rather than proof of an effective final circular. Do not rely on it instead of the current notification index; the draft is available at the RBI document page.

How a direct bank transfer works under FEMA

With a direct transfer, the overseas payer sends funds through banking channels to the Indian beneficiary’s account. One or more correspondent banks may be involved, and the currency path depends on the sending and receiving banks. The payment method is not itself a FEMA exemption.

The AD bank’s role for export receipts

For an export transaction, the receiving AD bank needs enough information to identify the remitter, understand the purpose and match the money to the underlying export record. Depending on the transaction, it may ask for an invoice, contract, shipping or service evidence, a purpose classification, declarations and details of the overseas customer. Your bank—not the payment channel—decides what it needs to complete its compliance and reporting work for your account.

Questions to ask before sending the payer bank details

  • Which branch or entity will receive the foreign currency and perform the AD-bank checks?
  • What purpose code or transaction classification should the payer use?
  • Which invoice, contract, service description or export evidence must be supplied, and when?
  • How will the bank identify the remitter if an intermediary or correspondent bank appears in the message?
  • Will the proceeds be credited in the original currency or converted, and what charges can reduce the beneficiary amount?
  • How will the bank tell you that the receipt has been matched or that additional information is required?

How an online payment platform fits into the RBI framework

An online provider may collect or facilitate a cross-border payment and then settle the proceeds to the Indian recipient. For online import and export payments, RBI uses the category Payment Aggregator–Cross Border (PA-CB). In its October 31, 2023 circular, RBI said that entities facilitating cross-border payment transactions for import and export of goods and services would come under direct RBI regulation. The circular identifies three activity categories: export-only, import-only and combined export-and-import authorisation. Read the circular at RBI’s PA-CB notification.

That framework concerns the intermediary’s regulated activity. It does not turn every payment received through a platform into a compliant export receipt. You still need to establish the underlying purpose, the contracting and collecting entities, the lawful settlement route and the records that reach the Indian AD bank.

What to verify about a platform

  • Legal entity: Identify the entity that contracts with you, collects from the overseas payer and settles to India. A consumer-facing brand may not be the entity appearing in bank records.
  • Current RBI position: Check whether the relevant entity and activity are currently authorised or otherwise permitted under the PA-CB framework. Authorisation can differ between export-only, import-only and combined activity.
  • Use case and geography: Confirm that your country, currency, goods or services and payer type are supported. A platform’s availability in one corridor does not establish availability in another.
  • Settlement path: Ask which Indian bank or AD entity receives the funds, whether the platform holds funds before settlement and what information accompanies the credit.
  • Records: Find out how invoices, payer identity, transaction purpose, refunds and reversals are recorded and how you can download statements for reconciliation.
  • Commercial terms: Obtain the current fee schedule, foreign-exchange conversion method, spread, withdrawal charges and any minimum or recurring fees. No universal fee or exchange-rate comparison is established by the RBI material.

Do not call a provider “FEMA compliant” without current, provider-specific evidence tied to your transaction. No particular platform’s authorisation, pricing or terms are established here.

Bank transfer versus payment platform: the practical comparison

Issue Direct bank transfer Online payment platform
Who accepts and settles the funds? The payer’s bank, correspondent banks where used, and the beneficiary’s bank move the funds into the Indian account. The provider may collect or facilitate the payment and later settle proceeds to the Indian recipient; identify the actual legal entities and settlement bank.
Regulatory framing The receiving AD bank handles FEMA checks relevant to the underlying receipt, especially for exports. Cross-border online import/export activity may fall under RBI’s PA-CB framework, with export-only, import-only and combined authorisation categories.
Purpose and remitter data Ask the bank what remitter and purpose information must appear in the payment message and supporting documents. Confirm what payer identity, purpose, invoice and transaction data the provider passes to the receiving AD bank.
Documentation and reconciliation You normally coordinate directly with the AD bank to link the credit to the invoice or other permitted purpose. You may need both the platform statement and the underlying invoice or remittance evidence; reconcile gross collection, fees, conversion and net bank credit.
Fees and conversion Charges can arise at the sending, correspondent and receiving banks; the actual amount depends on the route and currency. Fees, exchange-rate conversion and withdrawal charges depend on the provider and corridor; no comparable universal figures are stated in the official sources.
Settlement time and availability Depends on the banks, currency, correspondent route, screening and your bank’s processing. Depends on the provider’s countries, currencies, risk checks, holds and settlement cycle; no official source supplies a general winning speed.
Disputes and reversals Bank recall, return or investigation procedures apply; ask the bank how a rejected or misdirected payment is handled. The provider may impose its own review, reserve, refund or dispute process in addition to bank procedures; read current terms.

The comparison does not produce a universal winner. A route is appropriate only when it supports the transaction purpose, gives the AD bank usable information and leaves you with records that explain the amount received.

Decision process before you accept the first payment

  1. Describe the transaction in one sentence. For example: “Payment for software development delivered from India to an overseas business,” “support from a family member,” or “refund of a cancelled purchase.” If you cannot describe it accurately, do not choose a purpose label yet.
  2. Ask the receiving AD bank for its current checklist. Request the applicable purpose classification, required invoice or service evidence, remitter details, declarations and the method for resolving a credit placed on hold.
  3. Choose the channel only after the bank confirms the data path. For a bank transfer, obtain the exact beneficiary and intermediary instructions. For a platform, identify the collecting entity, settlement bank and documents the bank will receive.
  4. Check corridor support and total economics. Confirm the payer’s country and currency, the permitted transaction type, conversion basis, all charges and the expected net amount. Compare a real quotation from the bank and the provider rather than relying on headline fees.
  5. Preserve an evidence package. Keep the contract or invoice, payer identity, payment instruction, platform or bank confirmation, conversion calculation, fees, correspondence and the final Indian bank statement.
  6. Reconcile promptly. Match the gross amount, deductions, converted amount and bank credit to the invoice or remittance purpose. Report discrepancies to the AD bank or platform while transaction records are still available.

Step-by-step workflow for a direct bank transfer

  1. Prepare the beneficiary instructions supplied by your bank. Use the account name, account number, bank and branch identifiers, currency instructions and any intermediary details exactly as the AD bank provides them.
  2. Give the payer an accurate purpose description. For an export, use the invoice or contract description and the classification your bank told you to use. Do not ask the payer to disguise a commercial payment as a gift.
  3. Send supporting documents through the bank’s stated channel. Use the bank portal, branch or relationship manager and retain the submission acknowledgement.
  4. Monitor the incoming credit and bank messages. A correspondent-bank deduction, name mismatch, incomplete purpose information or compliance review can delay or reduce the credit.
  5. Close the reconciliation. Verify the credited currency and amount, record every deduction and obtain confirmation of any export-document or reporting entry that the bank says it has completed.

Step-by-step workflow when a platform is involved

  1. Read the legal and settlement information. Record the contracting entity, collection entity, Indian settlement entity, supported corridor and the terms governing holds, refunds and account closure.
  2. Confirm the transaction category with your AD bank. Tell the bank that an intermediary will collect or settle the funds and ask what provider statement, payer identity and purpose evidence it needs.
  3. Configure your account consistently. Use the same legal name, business description and tax or registration information across the platform, invoice and bank account where applicable. A mismatch can trigger a review.
  4. Issue an accurate invoice or remittance record. State what was supplied, to whom, when and for what amount. Preserve the payer’s order or contract and do not rely on a generic platform descriptor.
  5. Reconcile gross-to-net. Download the platform transaction record, identify conversion and service charges, and match the net settlement to the Indian bank credit.
  6. Handle holds or reversals transparently. Answer the platform’s verification request with the same documents supplied to the bank. If money is returned, retain the return notice and ask the AD bank how the original receipt should be recorded.

Documents and information your bank may request

The exact list is transaction-specific and comes from the receiving AD bank. Prepare an organised file rather than sending inconsistent explanations.

Information Why it matters Typical evidence to discuss with the bank
Purpose of payment FEMA treatment follows whether the receipt is an export, remittance or another permitted category. Invoice, contract, service description, gift or maintenance explanation, refund record or other category-specific document.
Remitter identity The bank must understand who sent the funds and whether the payer matches the underlying transaction. Payer name and address, order or contract, platform record showing the original payer and bank message details.
Amount and currency Supports matching, conversion and reconciliation. Invoice amount, payment confirmation, exchange-rate calculation, fee statement and Indian credit advice.
Export evidence Goods and services exports can require evidence linking receipt to the export record. Shipping or service-delivery records, invoice, contract and any export-system reference the bank requests.
Intermediary details A platform or correspondent can obscure the original payer or purpose unless its records are available. Provider legal name, statement, settlement advice, refund or dispute notice and the receiving AD bank’s credit advice.

These are questions to take to the bank, not a universal document list. Banks can require additional records under their customer due-diligence and transaction-monitoring procedures.

The special SNRR export-receipt arrangement

RBI’s FAQ on Special Non-Resident Rupee (SNRR) Accounts describes a specific arrangement in which an Indian exporter receives export proceeds by debit to an overseas buyer’s SNRR account. In that arrangement, the AD bank handling the export documents remains responsible for the export-compliance checks. The bank where the SNRR account is held performs due diligence and sends identifying details—such as customer identity, remittance purpose, currency and amount, and beneficiary information—to help the exporter’s bank close the matching EDPMS entry. The FAQ is dated January 16, 2025 and is available at RBI’s SNRR page.

This is a particular account-to-account structure, not a universal description of every online platform or foreign receipt. Do not assume that a platform settlement carries the same information flow unless your bank confirms it.

What can go wrong, and how to fix it

The bank credits the money but asks for documents later

A credit is not the same as final acceptance of the transaction purpose. Supply the requested invoice, contract, remitter information and explanation promptly. Ask what remains open in the bank’s records and keep the closure confirmation.

The payer used the wrong purpose or an ambiguous description

Do not rewrite the transaction after the fact. Tell the bank what the payment actually represents, provide the underlying evidence and ask whether a correction, return or additional declaration is required.

The platform statement shows a different payer name

Explain the relationship between the customer, marketplace or collection entity and the ultimate payer. Provide the platform’s legal-entity and settlement records. If the bank cannot establish the chain, ask whether it will accept additional KYC or whether the funds must be returned.

The net amount is lower than the invoice

Separate bank charges, platform fees, correspondent deductions and foreign-exchange conversion. Reconcile gross collection to net settlement and ask the bank how to record the deductions for the relevant transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A payment is held, reversed or refunded

Save the hold or reversal notice, identify whether the bank or platform initiated it, and provide the same transaction evidence to both parties. Ask the AD bank how the original receipt and returned funds should appear in its records; do not create a second invoice to hide a reversal.

The platform advertises support for your country but not your transaction

Country availability alone is insufficient. Confirm the currency, goods or services category, payer type, settlement bank and current terms. If the provider cannot identify its regulated collecting entity or the data sent to the AD bank, use a route your bank can document.

Fees, exchange rates and settlement time: what is and is not established

The official RBI material used here does not provide a comparable price table, exchange-rate spread, average settlement time, failure rate or user-outcome statistic for bank transfers versus platforms. Costs and timing vary with the corridor, currency, intermediary banks, compliance screening, provider holds and the receiving bank’s process. Obtain current, written terms for your actual country and transaction rather than treating either channel as universally cheaper or faster.

For a meaningful comparison, calculate the beneficiary’s net amount: start with the payer’s amount, subtract sending, correspondent, platform and withdrawal fees, then apply the actual conversion rate and any receiving-bank charge. Record the date and quote so a later reconciliation can explain the difference.

FEMA compliance is separate from tax and accounting

Meeting the bank’s FEMA and reporting requirements does not decide your income-tax, goods-and-services-tax, invoicing, withholding or accounting treatment. Conversely, issuing a tax invoice does not by itself satisfy the bank’s foreign-exchange documentation requirements. Keep the foreign-payment file with your accounting records and obtain separate tax advice where the transaction is taxable, recurring, high-value or cross-border in a complex way.

When to get specialist help

Speak with the receiving AD bank and a qualified FEMA or tax adviser before accepting funds when the amount is material, the payer is related to you, the transaction involves an unusual instrument, the provider will not disclose its settlement entity, the payment is for regulated goods or services, or a prior receipt is unresolved. Give the adviser the contract, invoice, payer and platform records, bank messages and the current RBI notification or FAQ relevant to the transaction.

Questions to ask your bank or provider

  • What exactly is the FEMA purpose category for this receipt?
  • Which AD bank or branch will own the compliance and reconciliation?
  • What purpose classification, invoice, remitter identity and export evidence are required?
  • If an intermediary is used, what legal entity collects the money and what data reaches the AD bank?
  • How are fees, conversion, refunds, reversals and partial payments recorded?
  • What confirmation will show that the receipt has been matched or closed?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I receive an export payment through an online platform instead of a bank transfer?

Possibly, if the transaction, intermediary, settlement route and records are acceptable to your receiving AD bank and the provider’s relevant activity is currently permitted under RBI’s PA-CB framework. The platform route does not remove the export-purpose and documentation checks.

Is a direct bank transfer automatically safer under FEMA?

No. A direct transfer gives the AD bank a direct banking-channel role, but compliance still depends on the underlying purpose, remitter information and required documents. Ask the bank how it will classify and reconcile the receipt.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my bank asks for an invoice after the money arrives?

Provide the accurate invoice or other purpose evidence, identify the remitter, explain any intermediary or fee deduction and ask what remains open in the bank’s records. A credit does not necessarily mean the purpose review is complete.

Does RBI’s PA-CB framework approve every payment platform?

No. The framework regulates entities facilitating online cross-border import and export payments and distinguishes export-only, import-only and combined activity. You must check the current entity, authorisation or permission, supported use case and settlement path.

Are the 2016 Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations still the current rules?

No. The RBI notification index lists the 2023 Manner of Receipt and Payment Regulations, amended February 12, 2025. The 2016 notification is an older reference and should not be presented as the current governing text.
