Fei-Fei Li’s World Labs Was Valued Above $1 Billion—Now It Has Raised Another $1 Billion

The startup is World Labs, founded by computer-vision pioneer Fei-Fei Li with Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall. It was reported to be valued above $1 billion after its 2024 fundraising. On February 18, 2026, World Labs announced that it had raised another $1 billion—but it did not disclose a new valuation.

That distinction matters: a company’s valuation is an estimate of what its equity is worth in a private financing, while funding is the capital investors put into the business. A January 2026 report said World Labs had discussed a possible valuation of about $5 billion, but that figure has not been officially confirmed.

The short answer

World Labs is building AI systems designed to understand and generate three-dimensional environments. The company calls this capability spatial intelligence: perceiving where objects are, maintaining relationships between them, generating coherent spaces, and potentially reasoning about how those spaces can be changed or navigated.

Its first publicly identified product, Marble, can create spatially cohesive 3D worlds from a text prompt, image, or video, according to World Labs. The product is aimed at areas such as interactive storytelling, games, film previsualization, design, simulation, and immersive experiences.

Marble is not proof that World Labs has solved general-purpose physical intelligence or robotics. It is an early product built around the company’s broader ambition: developing “world models” that represent environments in a more durable and interactive way than conventional image generators.

Who is Fei-Fei Li?

Li is a Stanford professor and a major figure in computer vision, the field of AI concerned with helping machines interpret visual information. She is closely associated with ImageNet, a large visual-recognition dataset that helped accelerate progress in computer vision.

Media coverage sometimes calls Li the “godmother of AI.” That is a nickname, not an official title, and it should not be read as meaning that she personally invented modern AI. Her relevance to World Labs is more specific: her research background is rooted in visual understanding, perception, and the relationship between machines and the physical world.

That background helps explain why World Labs is pursuing 3D environments rather than focusing only on text generation or the production of individual images.

World Labs’ funding and valuation timeline

Date What happened What it means
April 2024 World Labs’ initial financing and an approximate $200 million valuation were reported. The company was raising money while operating largely in stealth.
August 2024 A roughly $100 million round led by NEA was reported, valuing World Labs above $1 billion. This was the source of the original “billion-dollar startup” story.
September 2024 World Labs emerged from stealth and announced $230 million in total funding. The $230 million figure refers to capital raised, not valuation.
November 20, 2025 Cisco Investments announced an investment in World Labs. It added another strategic technology investor to the company’s backers.
January 23, 2026 Bloomberg reported that World Labs was discussing financing at an approximate $5 billion valuation. This was a reported fundraising discussion, not a confirmed valuation.
February 18, 2026 World Labs announced that it had raised $1 billion. The company disclosed the funding amount but not its valuation.

The early valuation reports were covered by TechCrunch, which reported the NEA-led financing, and by the company’s September 2024 emergence from stealth.

Valuation is not revenue, cash, or profit

When a private startup is described as “worth $1 billion,” the figure usually refers to the valuation assigned during a financing round. Investors buy shares at a price that implies a value for the whole company.

That does not mean World Labs had $1 billion in cash, $1 billion in annual sales, or $1 billion in profit. It also does not mean ordinary investors can buy or sell its shares at that price. Private-company valuations can change substantially between funding rounds, and the precise terms of a financing are often not public.

The same rule applies to the February 2026 announcement. “Raised $1 billion” means World Labs secured $1 billion in new capital. It does not, by itself, establish that the company is valued at $1 billion, $5 billion, or any other amount.

What “spatial intelligence” means

Text-focused AI models learn patterns in language. Image-generation systems can create visually convincing pictures. World Labs is pursuing a more persistent representation of space.

In practical terms, spatial intelligence could involve:

  • Understanding where objects are located relative to one another.
  • Maintaining depth, shape, scale, and perspective.
  • Generating a room or landscape that remains coherent as the viewpoint changes.
  • Keeping an object’s identity and location stable over time.
  • Reasoning about how a person, robot, or virtual character might move through the environment.
  • Representing possible interactions with objects and spaces.

For example, a conventional image generator might create a convincing picture of a room but struggle to preserve the room’s geometry when asked to show it from another angle. A spatial-intelligence system aims to create something closer to an underlying environment, so that the scene can be viewed, edited, and interacted with more consistently.

“World model” is not a single universally agreed technical category. Different researchers and companies use the term differently. It should therefore be understood as a broad direction in AI research, not a guarantee that a system has a complete or accurate model of the physical world.

What is Marble?

Marble is World Labs’ first publicly identified product. World Labs says it can generate high-fidelity, persistent 3D worlds from a single image, video, or text prompt. Time reported that Marble launched as a commercial offering allowing users to create exportable 3D environments from those types of inputs.

Potential uses include:

  • Games and virtual worlds: Quickly creating environments for exploration or further development.
  • Film and visual effects: Building rough environments for storyboarding and previsualization.
  • Architecture and design: Turning visual concepts into navigable spaces.
  • Simulation and training: Creating environments for testing scenarios or teaching systems.
  • Interactive storytelling: Giving audiences or characters a space they can move through.
  • 3D content creation: Producing starting points for artists and designers.

There is an important limitation to the description. A persistent 3D asset is not automatically a physically accurate simulation. Marble may produce a visually coherent environment while still making mistakes about geometry, occlusion, object permanence, materials, lighting, or physics.

That makes Marble easier to understand as a creative and 3D-generation product today than as a finished system for controlling robots or certifying engineering designs.

Why did investors value World Labs so highly?

Several factors likely contributed to the rapid valuation, although a financing price is ultimately an investor judgment rather than proof of business success.

  1. Li’s reputation: Leading AI researchers who start companies are scarce, and Li brought a substantial research record and industry profile.
  2. A large potential market: Spatial AI could matter to robotics, simulation, design, entertainment, industrial software, and virtual environments.
  3. Foundation-model enthusiasm: Investors have been willing to fund companies that could become important model or infrastructure platforms.
  4. An early-positioning opportunity: Backers may want exposure before world-model technology becomes more established and competition intensifies.
  5. Strategic relevance: Chip companies, software companies, and financial investors may see 3D AI as a future source of computing demand and professional tools.

The February 2026 investor group included AMD, Nvidia, Autodesk, Emerson Collective, Fidelity Management & Research Company, and Sea, according to Reuters reporting published by Channel NewsAsia. Autodesk reportedly invested $200 million and agreed to advise World Labs.

The investor mix offers clues about the opportunity. Nvidia and AMD may be interested in future AI and simulation workloads. Autodesk’s involvement points toward architecture, engineering, manufacturing, and other professional 3D workflows. Cisco Investments, which announced an investment in November 2025, described World Labs as developing systems that can generate, reason within, and interact with environments, according to Cisco.

Those investments are strategic signals, not evidence that each investor has committed to a specific product deployment or that World Labs has achieved large-scale commercial adoption.

What World Labs is trying to fix

Generative AI can already produce impressive images and video, but common weaknesses include:

  • Unstable geometry when the viewpoint changes.
  • Objects that change identity, shape, or position.
  • Weak long-term scene persistence.
  • Unreliable spatial relationships.
  • Limited ability to support meaningful interaction.
  • Visual plausibility without physical validity.

World Labs is trying to move from generating isolated frames to generating environments that can be revisited, navigated, edited, and used by people or AI agents. That could be valuable if it makes 3D production faster or enables better training environments for machines.

What remains unproven

The most ambitious claims are still future-facing. The key questions are not whether World Labs can produce compelling demonstrations, but whether its systems work reliably enough for demanding users.

  • Accuracy: Are the environments geometrically and physically correct enough for robotics, engineering, or safety-sensitive simulation?
  • Persistence: Does “persistent” mean a genuinely editable and reconstructable world, or mainly a stable visual asset?
  • Controllability: Can professionals specify exact dimensions, materials, layouts, and lighting?
  • Integration: Can outputs move into established design, game, simulation, or production software?
  • Cost and speed: Are generation times and computing requirements practical for professional workflows?
  • Business model: Who pays, what workflow improves, and how much measurable time or money does the product save?
  • Competition: Can World Labs maintain an advantage against major AI labs, game-engine companies, 3D-software firms, and robotics businesses?
  • Data rights: How are source images, videos, proprietary spaces, personal likenesses, and sensitive locations handled?

Public sources identify Marble and broad application areas, but they do not establish World Labs’ revenue, customer count, retention, profitability, or commercial scale. A large financing round supplies resources and investor validation; it does not settle those questions.

Can you use Marble today?

World Labs’ official page promotes “Create with Marble.” The available information does not establish a universal public price, plan structure, usage limits, or enterprise contract terms, so prospective users should check the company’s current product pages directly.

Marble may be worth exploring for creative experiments, early 3D workflows, previsualization, and interactive concepts. It is a poor substitute for production-grade CAD, deterministic engineering geometry, or guaranteed physical simulation unless the company’s documentation and the user’s own testing demonstrate otherwise.

For established professional workflows, Autodesk’s products may be more appropriate where the priority is CAD, building information modeling, engineering, manufacturing, or production control. Nvidia and AMD are relevant primarily as computing and AI-platform providers, not as interchangeable consumer tools. The right choice depends on whether the reader needs a hosted creative service, local GPU capacity, or established professional software.

The investor’s reality check

World Labs is notable because it is trying to push AI beyond text and flat images toward models of three-dimensional environments. That is a meaningful technical and commercial ambition, particularly for design, simulation, games, media, and eventually robotics.

But the financial headlines need to be read precisely. The company was reported to have crossed a $1 billion valuation threshold in 2024. It raised $1 billion in new funding in February 2026. Bloomberg reported discussions around a possible $5 billion valuation, but World Labs did not confirm that figure in its funding announcement.

For now, the strongest conclusion is not that World Labs has already proved a multibillion-dollar business. It is that investors are paying for the possibility that spatial intelligence becomes an important layer of future AI—and that Marble can turn that research direction into a useful, controllable, and commercially durable product.
