FCNR(B) vs NRE vs NRO Fixed Deposits: Which Is Right for Your Overseas Savings?

By TheFinanceBase Team 11 min read

There is no universally best non-resident fixed deposit. Choose FCNR(B), NRE or NRO only after matching the account to your residency status, the legal source and currency of your money, the currency you will eventually spend, your need to move funds out of India, your tax position and how likely you are to close the deposit early.

FCNR(B) keeps the deposit denominated in a permitted foreign currency. NRE and NRO deposits are rupee-denominated. That single distinction drives much of the exchange-rate risk, while eligibility, repatriation rules, tax treatment and bank-specific terms determine whether a particular deposit is suitable.

What the three deposit categories actually are

Feature FCNR(B) NRE NRO
Denomination Permitted foreign currency Indian rupees Indian rupees
Basic format Term deposit only under the Foreign Currency (Non-Resident) Accounts (Banks) scheme Non-resident rupee account and term-deposit category Separate non-resident rupee account and term-deposit category
Who may use it Eligible non-resident account holders under current RBI rules Eligible non-residents, subject to FEMA/RBI conditions Eligibility and permitted credits are governed by separate rules; confirm with the bank
Currency exposure Principal and interest remain in the deposit currency; the rupee value changes with exchange rates Money is converted to rupees for the deposit; later conversion back to another currency uses the prevailing rate Money is held in rupees; later conversion back to another currency uses the prevailing rate
Interest-tax point established by current official guidance Do not assume an exemption without checking your tax status and current law Interest exemption continues under the Income-tax Act, 2025 when the statutory conditions are met Current tax, withholding and filing treatment must be confirmed for your circumstances
Early-closure rule highlighted by RBI material No interest is payable when closed before the stipulated one-year minimum run; bank penalties and other conditions can apply Separate minimum-tenor and premature-withdrawal rules apply Terms depend on the applicable rules and bank policy

The table shows categories, not a ranking. A higher advertised rate in one row does not make that deposit better if its currency, tax result or liquidity does not fit your plan.

How currency changes the decision

FCNR(B): keep a foreign-currency principal

An FCNR(B) deposit lets an eligible non-resident place money in a permitted foreign currency rather than converting the principal into rupees for the term deposit. If your future liability is in that same currency, this can avoid one conversion at the time of maturity. It does not guarantee a better return: the interest rate is set by the bank, and the currency can still move against you if you eventually need rupees or a different currency.

For example, a deposit denominated in the currency of your salary may mature in that currency. If you then pay an Indian expense, the rupee amount you receive depends on the exchange rate on the conversion date, not on the rate when you opened the deposit. Conversely, a saver who converts foreign earnings into rupees for an NRE or NRO deposit accepts the later exchange-rate result when the money is converted again.

NRE and NRO: accept rupee exposure

NRE and NRO deposits are rupee paths. They can be appropriate when the money will be spent in India or when the saver deliberately wants rupee returns. They are less suitable for a liability that must be paid in the original foreign currency unless the saver is comfortable with conversion risk.

Do not describe a rupee deposit as “protected” from currency movements merely because its interest rate is fixed. The rate may be fixed in rupees while the value measured in dollars, euros or another currency changes every day.

Eligibility and the source of funds come first

Before comparing rates, establish which account can legally receive your money. RBI rules distinguish the account categories and the people who may maintain them. A bank will normally ask for evidence of identity, residency status, tax information and the source of funds; the exact document list and permitted credits can vary by institution and by the transaction.

  1. Confirm your status under FEMA and the bank’s onboarding rules. A person resident outside India for FEMA purposes, or a person otherwise permitted by RBI to maintain a particular account, may qualify for an NRE account. FCNR(B) eligibility is also limited to eligible non-resident account holders.
  2. Identify where the money originated. Record whether it came from overseas earnings, an existing non-resident account, an Indian receipt or another permitted source. Do not move money into a deposit until the bank confirms that the source can be credited to that category.
  3. Check the currency at the point of funding. Converting foreign currency into rupees can create a spread or fee before the deposit starts. Funding an FCNR(B) deposit in a different currency can create a different conversion decision later.
  4. Ask how a change in status is handled. If you return to India, change tax residence or otherwise cease to meet the account conditions, the account may need to be redesignated or closed under the applicable rules. Obtain the bank’s procedure before the change occurs.

An account label is not a substitute for an eligibility determination. Ask the bank for a written explanation of permitted credits, maturity proceeds and the documents required for your exact status.

Repatriation: separate the right from the paperwork

“Repatriable” is not the same as “instant and unrestricted.” Whether principal and interest can leave India, in what currency, and through which process depends on the account category, the source of funds, current RBI rules, tax compliance and the bank’s documentation requirements.

  • Ask whether both principal and interest may be remitted, or whether different rules apply to each.
  • Confirm the permitted remittance route, required declarations, tax documents and any bank forms.
  • Find out whether the maturity proceeds must first enter a particular account before being sent overseas.
  • Check the bank’s exchange-rate spread and wire charges if you need a currency conversion.
  • Keep evidence of the original source and remittance trail; a bank may request it at maturity or when funds are transferred.

The material available for this comparison does not establish a current universal remittance cap or process for NRO deposits. Treat any number quoted elsewhere as date-sensitive and verify it with the bank and current RBI guidance before relying on it.

Tax treatment: what is established and what remains personal

NRE interest

The Income Tax Department’s current non-resident FAQ says the NRE interest exemption continues under the Income-tax Act, 2025 when the relevant conditions are satisfied. The conditions include being resident outside India under FEMA or being a person permitted by RBI to maintain the account. This is not a blanket exemption for every person who calls themselves an NRI: your legal status, the account and the applicable tax year all matter.

FCNR(B) interest

An Income Tax Department notification on the specified interest-income statement says exempt interest, including FCNR account interest, need not be reported in that particular statement. That 2021 reporting rule is narrow. It does not by itself decide your return-filing obligation, tax residence, withholding position or treatment under every later rule. Obtain current tax advice before treating FCNR(B) interest as exempt.

NRO interest

The sources used here do not establish a complete current comparison of NRO tax rates, withholding rates or outward-remittance limits. Do not rely on a generic “NRO is taxable at X%” statement without checking the current Income Tax Department rules, any applicable treaty and your bank’s withholding process. Your tax-residency country may also tax the interest or require disclosure even when India’s treatment differs.

Use the correct tax year

Tax rules can change while a multi-year deposit is running. Save the deposit advice, interest certificates, tax deducted statements and remittance records. At filing time, reconcile the bank’s figures with the rules for that tax year and your residence, rather than relying on the treatment that applied when the deposit was opened.

Liquidity and premature closure

FCNR(B) has a one-year interest-eligibility threshold

RBI FAQ material states that an FCNR(B) deposit must run for at least one year to earn interest. If it is closed before that stipulated one-year period, no interest is payable. RBI directions also allow premature withdrawal subject to the scheme and the bank’s policy. A bank may impose a penalty and may recover costs such as a swap cost where permitted; the applicable components must be disclosed as required.

Therefore, do not treat the headline FCNR(B) rate as available for a deposit you might need to break after a few months. Read the deposit advice and the current policy before booking, including the treatment of partial withdrawals, renewal and a change in currency.

NRE and NRO have their own tenor rules

NRE term deposits have a separate minimum-tenor framework, and NRO deposits are governed by their own rules and bank terms. The exact minimum and the rate payable on early closure depend on the current directions and the product disclosure. Ask for the rate that would actually be paid if you close on each likely date, not merely the penalty percentage.

Build a liquidity ladder

If an emergency could force a withdrawal, avoid putting the entire balance into one long deposit. Split money into maturities that match likely expenses, while checking whether the bank permits the minimum principal for each booking. Keep a separate readily accessible balance for near-term costs so that a fixed deposit is not broken unnecessarily.

How to compare live bank offers without being misled

Rates are bank-specific and time-sensitive. No current bank ranking or universal “best rate” is established here. Compare offers only after making the inputs identical.

Input to hold constant Why it matters
Account category FCNR(B), NRE and NRO have different rules and currency exposure.
Currency Two FCNR(B) quotes in different currencies are not like-for-like.
Tenor and booking date A rate can change by term and can be withdrawn by the bank at any time.
Principal band Banks may quote different rates above or below a threshold.
Payout method Monthly, quarterly, annual and maturity payouts can produce different cash flows; compounding also changes the result.
Early-closure treatment Penalty, reduced interest, loss of interest and cost recovery can materially change the return.
Minimum deposit and renewal A rate may require a particular minimum or automatic-renewal instruction.
Conversion and remittance costs Foreign-exchange spreads, transfer charges and intermediary fees reduce what you receive.
  1. Request a dated quote or product sheet from each bank.
  2. Write down the currency, principal, tenor, interest rate, payout frequency and maturity amount.
  3. Ask for the amount payable if the deposit is closed at each realistic early date.
  4. Confirm eligibility, source-of-funds documentation and the route for maturity proceeds.
  5. Compare the net amount in the currency you will actually spend, after conversion costs and taxes that apply to you.
  6. Save the quote and deposit advice; rates and policies can change before renewal.

Never compare a promotional one-time rate with a recurring rate without labeling the difference. The available evidence does not establish current minimum balances or live rates for any bank, so those figures must come from a current offer.

Decision guide: which category fits which objective?

Choose FCNR(B) when foreign-currency certainty is the priority

  • You are eligible under current RBI rules.
  • Your principal is already in a permitted foreign currency or can be converted at an acceptable cost.
  • You expect to need the money in that same currency at maturity.
  • You can leave the deposit for at least one year if you want interest eligibility.
  • You have checked the bank’s early-closure, penalty and renewal terms.

FCNR(B) is not automatically preferable when your eventual spending is in rupees. In that case, a fall in the foreign currency against the rupee can reduce the rupee value of the maturity proceeds, even though the deposit itself paid the agreed foreign-currency interest.

Choose NRE when a rupee deposit and qualifying interest treatment fit

  • You qualify to maintain an NRE account.
  • You are comfortable converting the funds into rupees and carrying rupee exchange-rate exposure.
  • Your intended use is in India or you have decided that rupee returns suit your plan.
  • You satisfy the conditions for the NRE interest exemption described by the Income Tax Department.
  • You have verified the current repatriation route and documentation for your source of funds.

NRE can be operationally simple for a non-resident who wants a rupee deposit, but the exemption is conditional and should not be extended to every account holder or every deposit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose NRO only after confirming the India-linked source and tax result

  • The bank confirms that your source of funds and account status fit the NRO category.
  • You understand the current tax and withholding treatment for your residence and tax year.
  • You have checked the applicable remittance procedure and limits rather than assuming they match NRE or FCNR(B).
  • You can document the funds and satisfy any bank or tax-authority requirements.

NRO is not a fallback label for any non-resident deposit. Its separate rules mean that eligibility, tax and remittance must be checked as a package.

Worked choices without pretending to know future exchange rates

Overseas salary, future overseas spending

If the money is earned and will later be spent in the same foreign currency, an eligible saver may prefer to compare FCNR(B) offers first. The relevant comparison is the net foreign-currency maturity value and the cost of any transfer, not the rupee-equivalent rate shown in an advertisement.

Overseas savings, planned Indian education expense

If the liability is in rupees and occurs on a known schedule, compare NRE and FCNR(B) after modeling the conversion. An FCNR(B) deposit may preserve the original currency but still require a conversion at maturity; an NRE deposit fixes the deposit return in rupees but gives up the original currency denomination.

Money connected to an Indian receipt

Do not select NRE merely because the saver lives abroad. Ask the bank whether the receipt can be credited to NRO or another permitted account, what evidence is required and how the eventual remittance will work. The correct answer depends on the source and current rules, not on the desired interest rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Comparing headline rates across currencies. A rate in one foreign currency cannot be ranked against a rupee rate without modeling the future spending currency.
  • Assuming every non-resident gets tax-free interest. The documented NRE exemption has conditions; it does not establish a universal exemption for NRO or every FCNR(B) situation.
  • Ignoring the one-year FCNR(B) threshold. Closing earlier means no interest under the cited RBI rule, in addition to any bank charges or other consequences.
  • Treating repatriation as automatic. Documentation, source-of-funds evidence, tax compliance and bank procedures can affect the transfer.
  • Using an old FAQ as the only rulebook. RBI FAQ material is useful for the one-year point, but current RBI directions and the bank’s current policy govern the transaction.
  • Relying on an online NRO tax percentage. Confirm the current tax year, withholding and treaty position from official guidance and your bank.
  • Letting a deposit auto-renew blindly. Recheck your residency, currency need, rate and liquidity before renewal.

A pre-booking checklist

  • Residency under FEMA and tax law has been confirmed separately.
  • The bank has accepted the stated source of funds for the selected category.
  • The deposit currency matches the currency of the expected liability, or the exchange-rate risk is deliberate.
  • Tenor, minimum principal, payout frequency and compounding method are written down.
  • Early-closure treatment is documented, including the FCNR(B) one-year interest rule.
  • Repatriation, forms, tax documents and bank charges are understood.
  • The applicable tax year and any treaty position have been checked.
  • The quote is dated and the renewal instruction is intentional.

Bottom line

Use FCNR(B) when retaining a permitted foreign-currency denomination and accepting a one-year minimum for interest eligibility fit your plan. Use NRE when you qualify for that rupee category, want rupee exposure and meet the conditions for its interest exemption. Use NRO only after the bank confirms that your source of funds, tax treatment and remittance process fit its separate rules. In every case, compare current, like-for-like bank terms and model the currency you will actually spend.
