The short answer
| If your priority is… | The better starting point is usually… | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Coordinating investments with debt, taxes, employer benefits, insurance, estate issues, or several goals | Facet or another comprehensive planner | Facet’s Form ADV Part 2A describes a broad menu of planning services and includes investment management in its quoted planning fee. |
| A diversified portfolio managed automatically with minimal involvement | A robo-advisor | Robo-advisors generally automate portfolio selection, trading, monitoring, and rebalancing. |
| Occasional human guidance but mostly automated investing | A robo plan with a human-advice tier | Some providers add CFP access for an additional fee; the frequency and type of access must be verified in current plan documents. |
| Knowing which service fits your household | A side-by-side contract review | Your financial complexity, assets, cash flow, and willingness to make decisions matter more than the label. |
Facet describes its membership as flat-fee planning from a team of CFP professionals, with no product sales or commissions according to its financial-planning page. Its current Form ADV gives a more specific range: generally $2,600 to $10,000 per year, depending on member needs, with investment management included. A robo-advisor’s fee is usually tied to assets or a stated subscription, but the account’s fund expenses and other charges still affect the total cost.

A planning relationship rather than a portfolio-only service
Facet’s Form ADV Part 2A lists potential work in goal setting, portfolio design, investment management, cash-flow and expense planning, debt, employee benefits, employer stock plans, retirement, education, insurance, estate planning, and tax planning. That list is a menu, not a promise that every member receives every service. The applicable scope depends on your situation and the service level you select.

This breadth matters when one decision affects several parts of your finances. For example, selling employer stock can change your concentration risk, tax bill, cash reserve, and retirement plan. A planner who addresses those questions together may be more useful than a tool that only changes an investment allocation. Conversely, paying for a broad relationship is inefficient if you only need a simple, diversified portfolio and do not expect to use the additional planning work.
Human access and team structure
Facet’s page says members can access a team of CFP professionals and calls the service “Always a fiduciary.” Those are Facet’s descriptions of its own service. Ask how your team is assigned, who is responsible for recommendations, how often meetings occur, and what happens when a planner is unavailable. The public descriptions do not establish a universal meeting cadence or a dedicated single-adviser arrangement for every member.
How the fee is described—and the important qualification
Facet’s marketing page emphasizes a flat membership fee. Its ADV says financial-planning fees generally range from $2,600 to $10,000 annually, based on member needs, and that investment management is included. The same disclosure says Facet may charge different fees for the same or substantially similar services, including among members in the same tier, because of legacy pricing, promotions, or subjective pricing discretion. Therefore, “flat fee” should not be read as one identical price for every household or as a guarantee that your quote will match another member’s.
Recommended Free Tools
Facet also states: “No product sales and no commissions mean our advice is always centered on what’s right for you.” Treat that as the firm’s description of its business model, and read the ADV and advisory agreement for the actual services, fiduciary obligations, conflicts, and charges that apply to you.

What a robo-advisor provides
Automated portfolio management
A robo-advisor typically asks about goals, time horizon, risk tolerance, and account details, then uses an algorithm to build and maintain a portfolio. Core functions commonly include portfolio construction, automatic deposits, trading, monitoring, and rebalancing. The exact investments, tax features, account types, and access to people vary by provider and plan.
Betterment’s published examples
Betterment’s fee page, updated June 18, 2026, lists Digital investing advice at 0.25% per year or $5 per month. The page states that the monthly-fee condition applies when household investment balances are below $24,000 and recurring deposits are below $200 per month. It also lists Premium at 0.65% annually on eligible balances below $1 million, with access to CFP professionals. These are plan terms published on that date; confirm the current thresholds, eligibility, and services before opening an account.
Schwab’s published example
Schwab describes Intelligent Portfolios as automated portfolio building, monitoring, and rebalancing and advertises no advisory fee. “No advisory fee” does not mean “no costs.” Review the account agreement, portfolio disclosures, fund expenses, cash treatment, and any other charges before comparing it with a membership whose investment management is bundled into a planning fee.
Facet and robo-advisors compared by the questions that matter
1. What problem are you paying to solve?
| Question | Facet-style planning | Robo-advisor |
|---|---|---|
| Primary job | Coordinate a financial plan and implement investments. | Automate investment management. |
| Planning topics beyond investing | Potentially broad: cash flow, debt, benefits, retirement, education, insurance, estate, and tax planning, subject to your service level. | Provider-specific; the cited robo materials do not establish a universal scope beyond the selected plan. |
| Portfolio decisions | Discussed with human professionals and implemented within the agreed service. | Generated and maintained by an algorithm, with human help only if the plan includes it. |
| Customization | May reflect household circumstances discussed during planning. | Usually limited to information and preferences the platform supports; exact controls vary. |
If your unresolved questions begin with “How much should I save?” “Should I exercise employer stock options?” “How do I manage debt while investing?” or “How do taxes and estate documents fit together?”, investigate a comprehensive planner. If the question is “How do I keep a diversified portfolio on track without making trades myself?”, start with robo-advisor plans.

2. How much human help do you want?
Human advice can mean very different things: a one-time call, a team that answers questions, scheduled planning meetings, or a professional who coordinates decisions over years. Ask each provider to define the channel, response time, meeting frequency, professional credentials, and whether the person can advise on topics outside the investment account. Do not infer dedicated or unlimited access from the presence of a CFP label on a plan page.
3. What is the total cost?
Compare all-in costs, not just the headline advisory charge. For a membership, identify the annual planning fee, billing schedule, termination terms, and what investment management includes. For a robo-advisor, identify the advisory percentage or subscription, fund expense ratios, bid-ask or trading costs if applicable, account fees, wire or transfer charges, and any costs associated with a human-advice tier. Ask whether tax, estate, or insurance work is included, coordinated with outside professionals, or billed separately.
4. How much complexity does your household have?
- Lower complexity: one or two accounts, stable income, no concentrated employer stock, manageable debt, and a clear retirement target may not require a comprehensive membership.
- Moderate complexity: multiple account types, changing income, student or consumer debt, a new child, or competing savings goals can justify at least a planning consultation.
- Higher complexity: business ownership, equity compensation, large tax decisions, estate responsibilities, insurance gaps, or retirement income planning generally call for coordinated human analysis.
These categories are decision prompts, not eligibility rules. A young household can have complex needs, while a wealthy household may prefer simple automation.

| Plan or example | Published charge | Illustrative annual advisory amount |
|---|---|---|
| Betterment Digital, $20,000 household balance meeting the stated monthly-fee conditions | $5 per month | $60 per year |
| Betterment Digital, $100,000 balance | 0.25% per year | $250 per year |
| Betterment Digital, $500,000 balance | 0.25% per year | $1,250 per year |
| Betterment Premium, $100,000 eligible balance | 0.65% per year | $650 per year |
| Betterment Premium, $500,000 eligible balance | 0.65% per year | $3,250 per year |
| Facet membership | Generally $2,600–$10,000 annually, depending on needs and service level | Use the written quote; investment management is included according to the ADV. |
A simple break-even calculation can be useful but can also mislead. Dividing $2,600 by 0.25% produces roughly $1.04 million, yet that does not mean a robo-advisor is automatically better below that balance. The services are different, the percentage may change with plan or eligibility, and a comprehensive plan could prevent an expensive tax, debt, insurance, or retirement mistake. Compare the work you will actually use, not only the fee divided by assets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who may prefer Facet
- You want one ongoing relationship to connect investing with cash flow, debt, retirement, benefits, insurance, estate, education, or tax decisions.
- Your household has several accounts, irregular income, equity compensation, or major decisions that do not fit a portfolio questionnaire.
- You value discussing trade-offs with CFP professionals and are willing to pay an annual membership for that broader coordination.
- You want investment management included in the planning relationship rather than selecting a separate portfolio-only service.
Before committing, obtain your exact service scope and annual fee in writing. Confirm which planning topics are included, which require outside specialists, and how the quoted price can change.
Who may prefer a robo-advisor
- Your central need is disciplined, diversified investing and automatic rebalancing.
- Your finances are straightforward enough that you can handle cash-flow, debt, insurance, and tax decisions yourself or through separate professionals.
- You prefer a percentage-based or subscription price that starts relatively low at smaller balances.
- You are comfortable with standardized recommendations and limited customization.
If you want human help occasionally, compare a robo-advisor’s advice tier rather than assuming its basic plan includes a planner. Verify whether the professional can advise on your full financial life or only on the investment account.

- Write down the decisions you need help with. Separate portfolio tasks from questions about debt, taxes, benefits, insurance, estate documents, retirement income, and spending.
- Estimate the level of coordination required. List accounts, debts, employer plans, business interests, dependents, and upcoming life changes.
- Request the governing documents. Ask for the current Form CRS, Form ADV Part 2A, advisory agreement, fee schedule, and applicable plan disclosures. The SEC’s Investor.gov bulletin explains that Form CRS summarizes an adviser’s services and fees.
- Map each promised service to a deliverable. Ask who performs it, how often it is reviewed, whether it is included in the quoted price, and whether another professional must be hired.
- Calculate total annual cost. Add advisory or membership fees, fund expenses, account charges, and any separate planning or transaction costs.
- Test the relationship. Ask how you reach a human, how quickly questions are answered, and what happens during a market drop or major life event.
- Read exit terms. Check cancellation, refunds, account-transfer procedures, tax-document responsibilities, and what happens to your plan if you leave.
- Recheck volatile terms immediately before enrollment. Pricing, thresholds, plan names, and access rules can change.
What the evidence says about paying for human advice
Vanguard reported in 2025 an analysis of 23,054 advice offerings based on 2023 SEC Form ADV Part 2 brochures. After controlling for service scope and advisory-firm characteristics, access to a human adviser was associated with an average fee premium of 29 basis points. That is a study-level association, not a universal surcharge and not a prediction of what you will pay at Facet or any robo-advisor.

- Quick-Dry Long Lasting Ink:0.7mm black ink can slide effortlessly, dry immediately, & is not easily dirty. It has a high-capacity reservoir (up to 1300 meters), which is very suitable for left-handed & right-handed users.
- Sleek Design for Journaling & Planning: Engineered with a low center of gravity and precision tip for steady ink flow, these journaling pens excel at note-taking, sketching, planning, and more. They combine stylish pens with top-tier performance.
- Rolling Ball Design:The pocket clip with roll ball design can be easily attached to notebook pockets and binders, in addition, the fidget on the pen clip is also a small toy for your daily thinking to relieve stress.
- Comfortable Non-Slip Grip:The ergonomic pen barrel has a soft rubberized coating for a comfortable, non-slip grip, so you won't get fatigued even after long hours of writing.
The practical implication is to ask what the human layer accomplishes. A premium may be worthwhile when a professional coordinates decisions, keeps a plan on track, or prevents costly mistakes. It may be unnecessary when you need only automated rebalancing and can make the other decisions confidently.
Common mistakes to avoid
Comparing a membership with an advisory percentage as if they were identical
A membership can include planning work that a robo-advisor does not offer. A robo fee can be lower because the service is narrower and more automated. Compare deliverables before comparing prices.
Treating “no advisory fee” as free investing
Review fund expenses, cash allocations, account charges, and other disclosures. The absence of an advisory fee addresses one line item only.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming “flat fee” means everyone pays the same amount
Facet’s ADV expressly allows fee differences for similar services because of legacy pricing, promotions, or subjective discretion. Rely on your own written quote and agreement.
Paying for planning you will not use
If your only task is to automate retirement contributions into a diversified portfolio, a comprehensive membership may exceed your needs. Conversely, using a portfolio-only tool while ignoring debt, taxes, or concentrated stock can leave important risks unaddressed.
Ignoring account ownership and tax details
Ask who owns each account, how withdrawals and tax documents work, whether the service supports your account types, and what coordination exists with an accountant or attorney. These operational details can matter more than a small difference in the headline fee.
Bottom line
Facet is the stronger candidate when you want broad, continuing financial planning delivered with human CFP involvement and you will use that coordination. A robo-advisor is the stronger candidate when automated portfolio management is the main job and you prefer a standardized, usually lower-cost way to stay invested. The right choice is the one whose written scope, human access, total cost, and ongoing responsibilities match your household—not the one with the most attractive label.
