“Expect Imposters”: Coinbase Warns Customers After Data Breach Exposes Personal Information

Yes, Coinbase suffered a real data-theft incident. In May 2025, the company said criminals bribed or recruited overseas customer-support personnel to obtain information from some customer accounts and internal systems. Coinbase said passwords, two-factor authentication codes, private keys, wallets, and direct access to customer funds were not exposed. The main danger is targeted impersonation: scammers may use stolen personal and account details to sound like legitimate Coinbase support and pressure customers into revealing credentials or sending cryptocurrency.

What happened at Coinbase?

Coinbase disclosed the incident publicly on May 15, 2025, after receiving an extortion email on May 11. The company said an unknown threat actor claimed to possess customer-account information and internal Coinbase documentation. Coinbase’s investigation found that overseas support personnel had improperly accessed data without a business need, apparently after being bribed or recruited by criminals.

This was primarily an insider-enabled data theft and extortion incident, not a conventional attack in which hackers cracked Coinbase’s password database or private-key infrastructure. Coinbase said the criminals demanded $20 million to keep the stolen information from being published. The company refused to pay and instead created a $20 million reward fund for information leading to the criminals’ arrest and conviction. Coinbase’s explanation and its SEC filing describe the incident and response.

Coinbase said security monitoring had detected support personnel accessing data improperly in the months before the disclosure. Later reporting identified December 26, 2024, as the reported beginning of the unauthorized-access period, but that date should not be treated as the confirmed start or end of all unauthorized activity.

Was cryptocurrency stolen directly?

According to Coinbase, the compromised support personnel could not directly move or access customer funds. The company said the incident did not expose passwords, login credentials, two-factor authentication codes, private keys, Coinbase wallets, hot or cold wallets, or Coinbase Prime accounts. Coinbase’s customer guidance repeats that distinction.

That does not make the incident harmless. Someone with convincing information about your identity, transactions, balance, or previous support interactions may be able to impersonate Coinbase. The scammer’s goal would then be to persuade you to disclose a code, approve a transfer, install remote-access software, or move assets to a wallet controlled by the criminal.

What information may have been exposed?

Coinbase said the affected information could include:

Exposed or potentially exposed Coinbase said was not exposed
Names, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses Passwords and login credentials
Last four digits of Social Security numbers Two-factor authentication codes
Masked bank-account numbers and some bank identifiers Private keys
Images of government IDs, including driver’s licenses and passports Direct access to customer funds
Account-balance snapshots and transaction histories Coinbase wallets and Coinbase Prime accounts
Limited corporate support documents, training materials, and communications —

Masked information is not the same as a complete Social Security number or bank-account number, but it can still help a scammer make a message seem credible. Government-ID images are particularly concerning because they can support identity-verification fraud and highly targeted phishing. Transaction histories and balance snapshots can help criminals create urgency or identify potentially valuable targets.

How many Coinbase customers were affected?

Coinbase initially described the affected group as a small subset of customers and said its investigation was continuing. Later reporting citing Coinbase information put the number at at least 69,461 customers. That figure should not be assumed to be the final lifetime count unless Coinbase later confirms a broader total. TechCrunch reported the 69,461-customer figure.

Why Coinbase said to “expect imposters”

The stolen information could make a fraudulent contact look unusually authentic. A scammer might know your name, address, approximate balance, recent transaction, or the identity document you used. Those details are not proof that the caller or message is legitimate.

Hypothetical scam messages could include:

  • “We detected suspicious activity on your account.”
  • “Your identity document must be reverified immediately.”
  • “Move your cryptocurrency to a secure wallet while we investigate.”
  • “Read me the code we just sent to confirm your identity.”
  • “Call this emergency Coinbase support number.”

These attacks typically combine a credible identity claim with a plausible security problem, pressure to act quickly, and a request for a secret or transfer. Coinbase says it will never ask for your password, two-factor code, API key, seed phrase, or a transfer to a new wallet by phone or text. It also will not call and instruct you to move assets to a particular destination.

How to identify Coinbase’s breach notification

Coinbase says it emailed every customer whose information it knows was improperly accessed. Its current help guidance identifies the notification as:

Do not trust an email solely because the visible sender address appears correct. Sender addresses can be spoofed or imitated. Do not click links in an unsolicited message. Instead, open the Coinbase app or manually type Coinbase’s known website address, review alerts after signing in, and contact Coinbase through its official help center.

If you did not receive the notice, Coinbase says it has no evidence that your information was involved in this specific incident. That does not prove your information has never appeared in another breach or that a later Coinbase-themed message is genuine.

What affected customers should do now

1. Secure Coinbase

  1. Open the Coinbase app or navigate to Coinbase manually; do not use an email or text link.
  2. Change your Coinbase password if it was reused anywhere else. Use a unique password that is not used for email, banking, or another crypto service.
  3. Enable the strongest practical multifactor-authentication option. A hardware security key or authenticator-based method is generally preferable to SMS where supported and manageable.
  4. Review recent activity, security events, devices, sessions, API keys, withdrawal addresses, and connected applications.
  5. Remove unfamiliar devices, sessions, API keys, and third-party connections.
  6. Contact Coinbase through its official help center if your email address, phone number, password, or other account details changed unexpectedly.

2. Protect your email account

Your email account may be the most important recovery channel. Change its password, enable multifactor authentication, review active sessions, and inspect forwarding rules, recovery addresses, and unfamiliar devices. Contact your email provider if you suspect the account itself was compromised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Add protection to your phone number

Ask your mobile carrier about a port-out or SIM-transfer PIN, account-level fraud controls, and any unauthorized forwarding or recently added devices. A carrier PIN adds protection but does not make SIM swapping impossible. Authenticator applications or hardware security keys can reduce reliance on SMS recovery.

4. Monitor for identity misuse

If your government ID or Social Security information may have been exposed, check your credit reports and consider placing a credit freeze. A freeze is generally free and can help prevent new-credit accounts from being opened in your name. You can also consider a fraud alert and watch for unfamiliar accounts, address changes, tax-related fraud, or unexpected identity-verification requests.

Use the official pages for Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. Commercial identity-monitoring services are optional; they do not replace a credit freeze and generally alert you after suspicious activity is detected.

What to do if a scammer has already contacted you

  • Stop communicating with the caller or sender.
  • Do not provide passwords, two-factor codes, seed phrases, API keys, identity documents, or screen access.
  • Do not install remote-access software.
  • Do not move crypto to a “safe” wallet because someone says Coinbase requires it.
  • Do not approve a transaction merely because a caller claims to be Coinbase.
  • Save emails, phone numbers, wallet addresses, transaction IDs, screenshots, and chat logs.
  • Report the incident through Coinbase’s official support process.
  • If fiat money was sent, contact your bank or payment provider immediately.
  • For identity theft or broader fraud, use the guidance at IdentityTheft.gov and contact relevant authorities.

What if you already sent cryptocurrency?

Coinbase said it intends to voluntarily reimburse eligible retail customers whose losses were directly caused by social engineering connected to this incident, after reviewing the facts. That is not a blanket promise to reimburse every Coinbase customer for every phishing loss, unauthorized transaction, or unrelated scam. Eligibility and a direct connection to the incident matter.

Report the loss promptly to Coinbase through its official channels and provide the evidence you preserved. Do not pay a “crypto recovery” service that promises guaranteed retrieval; such services are frequently another form of fraud.

Financial and legal fallout

In May 2025, Coinbase estimated that remediation and voluntary customer reimbursements could cost approximately $180 million to $400 million, while warning that the final amount could change. Its 2025 Form 10-K later reported that Coinbase used $311.2 million in cash during 2025 in connection with the Data Theft Incident, including voluntary reimbursements to impacted customers. The annual report provides the later figure.

Customer litigation also followed. An amended consolidated complaint filed on October 24, 2025 alleged negligence, gross negligence, breach of implied contract, unjust enrichment, failure to provide timely data-breach notice, consumer-protection violations, breach of fiduciary duty, and related claims. The filing sought class certification, damages, interest, attorneys’ fees, and other relief. Those are allegations, not a court finding, and the cited filing said the outcome could not be predicted with reasonable certainty. See the relevant SEC filing.

What this breach means for Coinbase customers

The incident did not, according to Coinbase, hand criminals the keys to Coinbase wallets or direct access to customer funds. But it may have supplied enough personal context to make a fraudulent support interaction persuasive.

The safest rule is simple: treat every unsolicited Coinbase call, text, or email as potentially fraudulent, and begin all support or security actions from inside the Coinbase app or official help center. No legitimate Coinbase representative needs your password, authentication code, seed phrase, API key, remote screen access, or a transfer to a “secure” wallet.
