Eric Elfman’s MoxiWorks Strategy: From Entrepreneurial Vision to RISE

Eric Elfman became MoxiWorks’ CEO in June 2024, replacing founder York Baur at a turning point for real-estate technology. Elfman brought experience scaling enterprise software and a stated goal of making MoxiWorks more customer-focused, more practical about artificial intelligence, and more directly useful to agents competing for listings.

Two years later, the strategy is visible in the company’s narrower focus on sales and marketing technology and in RISE, an AI-centered platform for relationship intelligence, follow-up, marketing, and advertising. The evidence supports a substantial product and portfolio transformation. It does not yet independently prove that RISE increases listing wins, revenue, conversion rates, or agent retention.

Who is Eric Elfman?

Elfman was named MoxiWorks CEO on June 3, 2024, and formally took over from longtime chief executive and founder York Baur. Baur, who led MoxiWorks from 2012, remained on the company’s board after the transition.

Before joining MoxiWorks, Elfman co-founded and led Onit, an enterprise legal-software company focused on workflow automation and artificial intelligence. MoxiWorks and media coverage described Onit as growing from zero to $100 million in revenue under Elfman; that is a company-reported figure, not an independently audited result, according to Inman’s coverage.

Elfman has described himself as having roughly 25 years of experience founding and leading companies. His move from enterprise legal software to real-estate technology was significant because MoxiWorks was seeking more than a traditional brokerage executive. It wanted a leader familiar with vertical software, automation, data analysis, product scaling, and the pressure to turn technology into measurable business value.

Why did MoxiWorks change CEOs?

MoxiWorks presented the appointment as a next-phase growth and product-transformation decision. The company said Elfman would help advance product strategy, accelerate growth, and expand market share. The available announcements do not establish that Baur’s departure was caused by poor performance, a board dispute, or financial distress.

The timing nevertheless reflected a difficult market. Residential brokerages and agents were dealing with lower transaction volumes, uncertainty around commission economics, changing buyer and seller expectations, and intensifying competition from AI-enabled software. In that environment, brokerages needed technology that could demonstrate value in agent productivity and business generation—not simply add another feature to an existing platform.

Coverage in 2024 also framed listings as increasingly important. As buyer-side compensation became less certain following litigation and settlement developments, agents faced greater pressure to win and service listings. The $418 million NAR settlement was part of that 2024 context, but it should not be treated as the sole cause of the industry’s changes. Legal and market conditions continued to evolve.

What did Elfman mean by an “entrepreneurial mindset”?

Elfman’s argument was that mature business-to-business software companies can become less innovative over time. Customer support demands, accumulated product obligations, and pressure for profitability can make a company cautious. In his view, MoxiWorks and its competitors remained vulnerable to disruption even though they were established providers.

His proposed answer had several parts:

  • Return to customer-centricity: Build around the day-to-day problems agents and brokerages are trying to solve.
  • Focus on a commercial outcome: Help agents “find, win and close” business, with particular emphasis on winning listings.
  • Use AI practically: Study the company’s data and workflows before announcing AI features, rather than using “AI” as a marketing label.
  • Rebuild where necessary: Create a new generation of the platform instead of layering disconnected tools onto an aging foundation.

This was not an argument that every real-estate problem could be solved by generative content. It was closer to a workflow strategy: identify which contacts deserve attention, automate repetitive marketing and follow-up, and connect those actions to the agent’s pipeline.

The original platform promise

In 2024, MoxiWorks said it was developing a new generation of its platform, with a projected launch near the end of that year and broader availability the following summer. That timeline was a forward-looking projection, not a guaranteed delivery date.

The later product announcements suggest that the transformation continued through 2025 and 2026 rather than appearing as one clearly documented launch matching the original schedule. The resulting product direction became most visible through RISE.

What changed after the CEO transition?

The following chronology shows how the strategy developed:

Date Development Strategic significance
June 2024 Elfman becomes CEO; Baur remains on the board. A software entrepreneur takes over during an industry and technology transition.
July 2024 Media reports layoffs at MoxiWorks. A possible sign of restructuring, although the scale and rationale were not publicly established and MoxiWorks did not comment to HousingWire.
January 2025 MoxiWorks announces additional capital from its ownership group. The amount was not disclosed. The company identifies AI and automation, agent teams, propensity scoring, and mobile as priorities.
April 2025 Chris Choi is appointed CFO. MoxiWorks describes the hire as part of a growth and scaling phase.
May 2025 MoxiBalance is sold to Upfront/Vero. MoxiWorks narrows its stated focus toward sales and marketing solutions.
November 2025 RISE launches. The company introduces an AI-centered marketing and relationship platform.
May 2026 RISE expands with Top 5 Contacts, Canva integration, Promote workflows, and mobile enhancements. The strategy moves from broad positioning toward connected daily marketing and follow-up workflows.

These developments are consistent with a company reshaping its product portfolio and investing behind a more concentrated commercial thesis. They do not, by themselves, establish financial success or customer return on investment.

Why the MoxiBalance sale matters

MoxiBalance was MoxiWorks’ back-office accounting solution. In announcing its sale to Upfront/Vero, MoxiWorks said the transaction would allow it to concentrate on sales and marketing solutions that help agents and brokerages find, win, and close more business.

That decision suggests a sharper identity for MoxiWorks: less of an all-purpose brokerage operating system and more of an agent-facing marketing, relationship-intelligence, lead-follow-up, and listing-acquisition platform. This is an inference from the divestiture and subsequent product messaging, rather than a separately stated market analysis.

The trade-off is clear. A narrower portfolio can make product development and messaging more coherent. It also means brokerages looking for an integrated back-office accounting capability will need to evaluate other systems or the new owner’s offering.

What is RISE?

MoxiWorks describes RISE as an AI-native or AI-centered platform connecting marketing, contact prioritization, outreach, follow-up, advertising, transaction-related information, and AI-assisted recommendations.

Its May 2026 expansion provides more concrete examples:

  • Top 5 Contacts: The system identifies five contacts per day for an agent to prioritize, using engagement, activity, and relationship signals in the agent’s database.
  • Canva integration: The release describes two-way integration intended to connect content creation with the broader marketing workflow.
  • Promote: Advertising workflows are brought into the same environment, with technology powered by Evocalize.
  • Mobile enhancements: The companion app is updated to support the connected workflow away from the desktop.

This is materially different from simply adding a chatbot or a tool that writes listing copy. RISE is positioned around deciding whom an agent should contact, what follow-up should happen, and how marketing execution can be coordinated across channels.

Does RISE prove Elfman’s strategy worked?

It demonstrates that the strategy produced a visible product direction. The company moved toward data-informed prioritization, automation, agent marketing, and relationship management. The MoxiBalance sale also shows that MoxiWorks was willing to reduce its scope to support that focus.

What remains unproven is the customer outcome. The available evidence does not independently verify that RISE produces more listings, higher close rates, greater revenue, or better agent retention. MoxiWorks’ descriptions establish what the product is designed to do and how the company positions it; they are not controlled studies or independent customer-performance data.

For a brokerage or team evaluating the platform, the relevant question is therefore not whether it uses AI. It is whether the recommendations are accurate, timely, explainable, and connected to actions agents will actually take.

Strategic advantages and risks

Potential advantages

  • Relevant software background: Elfman’s enterprise vertical-software experience is directly applicable to scaling a B2B platform.
  • Credible AI orientation: His Onit background helps explain the emphasis on workflow automation and data analysis.
  • Clearer product purpose: Marketing, follow-up, and listing generation are easier to connect to business goals than a collection of unrelated features.
  • Existing distribution: MoxiWorks had an established brokerage and agent customer base before the transformation.

Risks and trade-offs

  • Outsider risk: Real-estate compliance, brokerage economics, commission structures, and agent behavior are specialized. A software-first strategy can misread those details.
  • Rebuilding risk: A platform transformation can create migration, training, integration, and customer-support burdens.
  • Data governance: Using CRM activity and engagement signals for propensity scoring raises questions about consent, security, retention, explainability, and regulatory compliance.
  • Feature-outcome gap: Prioritizing a contact or automating outreach does not guarantee a listing appointment or closed transaction.
  • Portfolio risk: Selling MoxiBalance may improve focus while removing a broader back-office capability.
  • Execution disruption: Reported layoffs soon after the CEO change may indicate restructuring, but their scope and rationale were not publicly established.

What buyers should ask before adopting RISE

  1. What customer data and engagement signals does the system use?
  2. How is that data permissioned, secured, retained, and exported?
  3. Which CRM, marketing, transaction, advertising, and design systems does it integrate with?
  4. Can brokerage administrators explain, review, or disable automated recommendations and outreach?
  5. How does the platform support compliance review for AI-assisted marketing?
  6. What migration, training, implementation, and support work is required?
  7. Is pricing based on agents, teams, brokerages, modules, usage, or another model?
  8. What independently verifiable customer results can MoxiWorks provide?
  9. Which legacy products remain strategically supported?

A note on MoxiWorks’ published customer figures

Readers should be careful when comparing MoxiWorks’ reported scale. Different company materials cite different figures. Earlier releases referenced more than 800 brokerages and 400,000 agents; the current About page displays approximately 7,000 brokerage clients and 377,000 agents; and the May 2026 RISE release says more than 3,000 brokerages and 400,000 agents.

These numbers should be treated as company-reported, dated figures rather than one consistent independently verified customer count. Differences may reflect definitions, reporting periods, products, or presentation—but the available sources do not explain the discrepancy.

Elfman’s position in 2026

As of August 18, 2026, MoxiWorks still lists Elfman as CEO on its About Us page. He is no longer simply a newly appointed executive. He is a two-year incumbent whose tenure has included new capital, leadership changes, a product-priority reset, a divestiture, and the rollout and expansion of RISE.

The fairest assessment is that Elfman appears to have delivered a genuine strategic transformation rather than merely rebranding MoxiWorks. The strongest evidence concerns direction: a narrower product portfolio, increased emphasis on AI and automation, and a platform organized around relationship intelligence and marketing execution. The strongest proof still missing is independent evidence that those changes produce better economics for agents and brokerages.
