It is the Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS), 1995 process created to implement the Supreme Court of India’s 4 November 2022 judgment. Only specific historical groups qualified, and the general application window has closed. A live EPFO portal can still show status and an estimate calculator, but those tools do not by themselves reopen applications.
Your service dates, wage and contribution history, prior joint-option history, and whether you filed on time determine what you can do now. The final pension and any dues come from EPFO’s regional-office records, not from the online calculator.

What “higher pension” means under EPFO
EPS normally calculates pension using pensionable service and pensionable salary under the scheme’s rules. The higher-wage route lets an eligible member have pension determined using wages above the statutory wage ceiling, where the required historical conditions and option process are satisfied. It arose from the Supreme Court’s 4 November 2022 decision concerning the Employees’ Pension Scheme, 1995, and EPFO’s subsequent implementation instructions.

This is an adjustment within EPS, not a separate investment, annuity, or commercial retirement plan. The process also involves transferring or accounting for the additional employer-side contribution required under EPS. Because each member’s service and contribution record is different, a general article cannot calculate an individual’s pension or demand accurately.

Who could use the higher-pension process?
EPFO’s rules describe two different historical routes. They should not be treated as one open-ended entitlement for anyone who had a high salary or who retired before 2014.
| Historical route | Core conditions described by EPFO | What the member needed |
|---|---|---|
| Retired before 1 September 2014 | Retired before the date; had exercised the pre-amendment option under the proviso to paragraph 11(3) of EPS before retirement; had contributed to EPF on pay above the applicable wage ceiling; and the earlier joint option had been declined by PF authorities. | Validation of that earlier option through the Supreme Court implementation process, subject to EPFO’s records and other conditions. |
| In service before and on or after 1 September 2014 | Was an employee before 1 September 2014, continued in service on or after that date, and had been unable to exercise the earlier joint option. | A joint option under the implementation process, with eligibility depending on employment, wages, contributions and option history. |
Retirees who left service before 1 September 2014
This route was for validation of a previously exercised option. The Pension Manual does not describe an open option for every pre-2014 retiree. A person who simply retired before the date, without the specified earlier joint option and the relevant above-ceiling EPF contribution history, should not assume that this route applies.
The key evidence is historical: the option had to be made under the pre-amendment paragraph 11(3) proviso before retirement, and PF authorities had declined it. A later request cannot create that past option. EPFO’s regional office must examine the member’s records and the employer’s records.
Employees who straddled 1 September 2014
The second group covered employees who were already in service before 1 September 2014 and remained in service on or after that date, but could not exercise the earlier joint option. The Government’s 6 April 2023 parliamentary reply describes this employee route and the extensions that operated during 2023.
Being employed during both periods is necessary but not sufficient. The member’s wage history, EPF and EPS contributions, establishment status, and previous option history still matter. Do not use the broad description as a personal approval; ask EPFO and the employer to verify the record.

People who should not assume eligibility
- A person who joined only after 1 September 2014 does not fit the historical employee description quoted above merely because current wages exceed the ceiling.
- A pre-2014 retiree who never exercised the specified earlier option is not automatically covered by the validation route.
- High salary alone does not establish eligibility. The process depends on EPS membership, contributions, service dates and option records.
- A portal’s visible calculator or tracking button is not proof that a new application can be filed.
Is it still possible to apply?
For ordinary applicants, no. EPFO’s Pension Manual (final 02122024), section 5, gives 11 July 2023 as the general last date for higher-wage applications. Later visibility of a portal, calculator or status page should not be read as a new filing window.
The Manual describes a narrow historical exception. An applicant who had lodged a grievance in EPFiGMS because KYC-related technical problems prevented online submission may be covered for handling under that exception. It is not a general reopening for people who missed the deadline, changed their mind, or did not know about the process.
If you believe the technical-grievance exception applies, preserve the grievance number, date, KYC error details and any acknowledgement. EPFO must determine whether the grievance and circumstances fit its stated exception; an individual cannot establish that status solely by asserting that the portal failed.
How to deal with an existing application
Current members with a timely submission should use the official EPFO “Pension on Higher Wages” member portal for status tracking. The portal’s presence confirms that tracking and estimation functions are available; it does not confirm that fresh submissions are being accepted.
- Collect your identifiers. Keep your Universal Account Number, PF member identification details, date of birth, establishment information and the acknowledgement or application reference generated when you filed.
- Open the EPFO member portal’s Pension on Higher Wages section. Choose the status-tracking function rather than assuming that an estimate calculator is an application form.
- Enter the requested details exactly as they appeared in the filing. Differences in name, date of birth, UAN or member ID can prevent a match even when the underlying record exists.
- Save the displayed status and any notice. Download or print the page, note the date and retain screenshots if the portal gives an error or asks for documents.
- Respond through the channel specified by EPFO. If the status requests employer records or regional-office action, contact the relevant employer and EPFO office with the reference number rather than submitting a duplicate claim.
A “pending,” “under process,” or document-request status is not an approval. It means the record still requires examination or reconciliation.

What evidence can be required?
EPFO may need to reconcile the member’s service, wages, contributions and option history. Keep copies of records that identify the relevant periods and amounts, such as:
- EPF account or passbook entries showing contributions on wages above the applicable ceiling;
- salary or wage registers, pay slips, appointment and service records for the relevant period;
- the earlier joint-option form or evidence that PF authorities declined it, where the retiree route is claimed;
- the higher-wage application acknowledgement and any EPFiGMS grievance acknowledgement;
- identity, bank and KYC records matching the EPFO account; and
- employer correspondence or records requested by the regional office.
Do not treat this as a universal document checklist. EPFO’s regional office decides what is admissible for the particular establishment and period.
If paragraph 26(6) proof was not uploaded
EPFO’s 13 December 2023 circular and FAQ provide an important, limited protection: an otherwise eligible application is not to be rejected solely because proof of the paragraph 26(6) joint request was not uploaded with the online form. The regional office is to obtain admissible proof from the employer.
This does not waive the other conditions. It does not prove that an applicant was otherwise eligible, erase missing wage or service records, or guarantee acceptance where the employer cannot substantiate the joint request. The same handling approach is described for members of exempted establishments.
How EPFO calculates the amount
EPFO says pension calculation follows paragraph 12 of EPS, 1995. The pension commencement date determines which calculation treatment applies. The relevant wage and service record, the amount of additional contribution due, and the date on which pension begins must therefore be established for each member.

Online figures are not final. The portal expressly warns: “The dues calculated through the calculator is a ball park estimate. Actual dues calculated on the basis of records by the concerned Regional Office of EPFO will be authentic.” That disclaimer applies to the estimate shown to a member; it is not a promise of a particular pension or demand.
Why the calculator may differ from the final demand
- The calculator may use information entered by the member rather than verified employer and EPFO records.
- Service periods, wage ceilings, contribution months and pension commencement dates may need correction.
- Interest, transfers and adjustments can depend on the record maintained by EPFO.
- The paragraph 12 treatment applicable to the pension commencement date may not be captured by a simplified estimate.
Use the estimate for orientation only. Do not borrow, transfer savings or make an irreversible retirement decision based solely on the displayed number.
How the two historical routes differ in practice
| Question to check | Pre-1 September 2014 retiree route | Employee-in-service route |
|---|---|---|
| Was the member retired on 1 September 2014? | Retired before that date. | Was in service before the date and continued on or after it. |
| Was there an earlier joint option? | Yes—the pre-amendment option had already been exercised and declined by PF authorities. | The earlier joint option had not been exercised or could not be exercised, so the Supreme Court implementation process provided the joint-option route. |
| What is being examined? | Whether the past option can be validated with the required contribution and service history. | Whether the employee and establishment satisfy the historical conditions for the implementation joint option. |
| Can current high wages alone qualify? | No. | No. |
| What controls the final result? | EPFO and employer records, including the prior option history. | EPFO and employer records, including service, wages, contributions and option history. |
What to do when a status is delayed or records are missing
- Read the status wording carefully. A request for employer verification is different from a rejection, and a technical error is different from an eligibility decision.
- Ask the employer’s authorised PF contact for the specific record requested. Give the application reference and relevant employment period; avoid sending unrelated personal documents.
- Contact the EPFO regional office named in the record. Ask which document, contribution period or employer confirmation is outstanding and how it should be submitted.
- Keep a written trail. Record dates, names, reference numbers and copies of every submission.
- Use EPFiGMS for a genuine service grievance. A new grievance does not automatically convert a late application into a valid higher-pension application. The technical-KYC exception described by EPFO concerns a grievance lodged when the filing problem occurred.
If EPFO issues a decision you believe misreads your records, request the reason and the applicable review or representation channel from the regional office. The available general guidance does not establish one universal appeal procedure for every rejected claim, so do not rely on an informal online post or an unverified deadline.

Mistaking the calculator for an application
An estimate tool can remain online after a filing window closes. Check whether you possess a dated application acknowledgement; do not infer acceptance from the ability to enter wages into a calculator.

Assuming every pre-2014 retiree is covered
The retiree route requires the earlier pre-amendment option and the described above-ceiling contribution history. Retirement date by itself is not enough.

Uploading a random replacement for paragraph 26(6) evidence
EPFO’s instruction concerns obtaining admissible employer proof where an otherwise eligible application lacked an upload. A self-created statement is not automatically equivalent to employer records.
Treating an estimate as a demand
The portal labels its result a ballpark estimate. Wait for the regional office’s record-based calculation before deciding whether any additional contribution is affordable or appropriate.
Submitting duplicate or contradictory requests
Duplicate forms can create record mismatches. Use the original reference, answer the specific document request and ask EPFO how to correct an error rather than filing a second claim.

A practical eligibility and status checklist
- Identify whether you were retired before 1 September 2014 or remained in service across that date.
- For the retiree route, locate evidence of the earlier paragraph 11(3) option and its rejection by PF authorities.
- Confirm that EPF contributions on above-ceiling pay and the relevant service periods appear in employer or EPFO records.
- Find your dated higher-pension application acknowledgement, if you filed one.
- Check whether an EPFiGMS grievance was lodged at the time a KYC technical problem prevented online submission.
- Use the portal’s status function for an existing application; do not treat the calculator as proof of a reopened window.
- Provide employer or regional-office records requested for verification.
- Compare any online estimate with the eventual regional-office calculation, which EPFO identifies as authentic.
Questions to take to EPFO or your employer
For a case-specific answer, ask concise questions tied to your reference number:
- Which historical route does EPFO say my service and option history falls under?
- Is my application recorded as submitted within the permitted window?
- Which wage, contribution or service period is missing or inconsistent?
- Has the employer supplied the paragraph 26(6) or other requested evidence?
- Is the displayed amount only an estimate, and when will the regional office issue its record-based calculation?
- If the record is rejected, what written reason and review channel apply to this case?
Keep in mind that EPFO’s portal functions and processing status can change. For a current case, rely on the live member portal, the relevant regional office and your employer’s authenticated records rather than an old social-media post or an unofficial calculator.
