Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhat to do now: open EPFO’s live Pension on Higher Wages portal, use Track Application Status, preserve every employer-submitted wage and joint-option record, and answer any case-specific query or demand. The employer upload deadline of 31 January 2025 has passed. EPFO has not published a universal 2026 processing-time promise or a new general member filing deadline, so your tracker status and the concerned regional office’s communication control what happens next.
What the EPFO higher-pension process does
The higher-pension exercise lets eligible Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) members have pension determined using pensionable wages above the statutory ceiling, subject to the Supreme Court judgment of 4 November 2022 and EPFO’s implementation directions. It is not an automatic pension increase. EPFO and the employer must validate the member’s option, historical wages, provident-fund remittances, applicable charges and interest adjustments before the pension can be recalculated.

The practical question is therefore not simply “How much higher pension will I get?” It is whether the records prove a valid joint option and whether the additional provident-fund share can be reconciled for the relevant service period. The ceiling changed over time: EPFO’s Pension Manual refers to monthly ceilings of ₹5,000, ₹6,500 and ₹15,000, depending on the period. Old payroll and contribution records can consequently determine both eligibility and the amount due.
EPFO labels the service Pension on Higher Wages. Its portal combines application-status tracking, FAQs and a dues calculator, but the calculator is not an approval or a final bill.

Deadlines: what is closed and what is not established
Employer wage-detail upload deadline
The Government’s published notice described 31 January 2025 as the final opportunity for employers to upload wage details for more than 3.1 lakh pending applications. That date is historical and closed. If your status still shows an employer-verification problem, do not assume that an extension is available; follow the instruction attached to your case and contact the employer or regional office holding the records. Read the PIB deadline notice.
Member application window
The application exercise followed the 4 November 2022 judgment and EPFO’s subsequent instructions. The currently indexed public material does not establish a fresh, nationwide member filing window. Do not treat old cut-off dates copied on third-party pages as an open opportunity. Check the live higher-wages portal and your regional-office communication for an individual instruction.
Processing time
EPFO provides a status tracker but no universal service-level target in the material reviewed. A national processing percentage or a dated demand-letter total cannot predict when your own record will be decided. A case can remain open while an employer locates historical payroll data, corrects a wage upload or answers an EPFO query.
How to check your application status
- Open the official Pension on Higher Wages member portal, or start at the EPFO member home page.
- Choose the Pension on Higher Wages service and select Track Application Status.
- Authenticate with the details requested on the official page. Never give your UAN, Aadhaar, PAN, bank information or one-time password to a caller claiming to be an agent.
- Save or print the displayed status, acknowledgement number, employer name and any document or payment instruction. A dated copy helps when an employer or regional office asks what the portal showed.
- Read the status wording literally. “Pending with employer,” “employer verification,” a demand communication, and a request for proof require different responses; do not send a generic document bundle when the case specifies something else.
The portal is the best source for your case-specific state. Public progress figures are snapshots, not a completion guarantee.

Documents that can prove the joint option
EPFO’s circular dated 14 June 2023 addresses cases in which the joint request, undertaking, permission or related Para 26(6) record is not readily available. It lists evidence examples for scrutiny. Having one item does not by itself establish eligibility; EPFO still checks the underlying wages and contributions.
| Evidence example | What it can help establish | How to preserve it |
|---|---|---|
| Wage details submitted by the employer with the validation application | The employer’s record of the wages used for the joint-option validation | Keep the uploaded copy, acknowledgement and any correction history. |
| Salary slip or employer letter authenticated by the employer | Actual pay for the relevant service period | Retain signed or otherwise authenticated pages showing employer identity and period. |
| Copy of the joint request and undertaking from the employer | The formal request and employer consent under the applicable procedure | Store the signed copy and transmission proof. |
| PF-office letter issued before 4 November 2022 indicating PF contribution on higher wages | Earlier EPFO evidence that contributions were being made above the ceiling | Keep the complete letter, reference number and any enclosure. |
The circular says the employer’s joint request and undertaking for permission under Para 26(6) may be submitted by a pensioner or member at any time before higher-wage pension is granted, in accordance with the Supreme Court decision. For qualifying applicants who did not submit those documents earlier, it also permits submission through the last employer at final claim settlement. The direction includes applicants from PF-exempted establishments. Read the 14 June 2023 EPFO circular for the wording and pro forma.
Also retain the application acknowledgement, employer correspondence, PF-office letters, salary records and proof of every upload. Do not send irreplaceable originals unless an official office specifically requires them and gives you a receipt.

What employer verification actually checks
Wages and service-period records
Employer verification is substantive, not a clerical tick-box. EPFO may compare the wage information in the application with payroll registers, salary slips, attendance or service records and the wage ceiling applicable in each period. A later salary statement cannot automatically prove an earlier year.
Rank #3
Provident-fund remittances
The field office checks whether the employer remitted the relevant provident-fund share on actual higher pay above the then-applicable ceiling. If the employer reported only the ceiling wage, the case may require a reconciliation or additional payment before the pension option can be implemented.
Administrative and inspection charges
EPFO’s Pension Manual identifies employer remittance of applicable administrative and/or inspection charges as part of the review. Missing charge records can therefore keep a case in verification even when a salary slip is available.
Interest and account updates
The office also checks whether interest on the member’s provident-fund account reflects the relevant contributions. Historical ledgers may need correction before EPFO can determine the amount to be diverted or deposited to the Pension Fund.

Give the employer your acknowledgement and the exact status wording. If the employer has closed, merged or changed its establishment, assemble your own authenticated records and ask the regional office how it wants the proof submitted.

How dues are calculated and what a demand means
Use the calculator only for planning
The portal’s calculator estimates the amount diverted or deposited to the Pension Fund. EPFO calls the result a “ball park estimate”; the concerned regional office’s calculation from official records “will be authentic.” Treat an unofficial spreadsheet or forwarded message as a planning aid at most, never as the amount you must pay.
Read every demand communication
When EPFO issues a demand, check that it identifies the covered employment period, wage or contribution basis, interest treatment, total amount and payment instructions. Compare those fields with your acknowledged application and employer records. A difference in service dates, a missing employer or an unexplained interest period is a reason to seek clarification through the official case or grievance channel before paying.
Payment and pension arrears
Follow only the payment route and account details printed in the official communication or shown in your authenticated portal session. Do not deposit money into a personal account or pay an intermediary who promises approval. EPFO’s indexed Hindi FAQ states that pension is calculated under the EPS provisions in force on the date pension begins. It also says pension arrears are paid under the existing process in compliance with income-tax provisions on tax deducted at source (TDS). That general rule does not establish your payment date or your net amount after tax. See EPFO’s FAQ page.

What the published progress numbers do—and do not—tell you
| Figure | Date and source context | Correct interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 72% of applications processed | Update on the 237th Central Board of Trustees meeting held 28 February 2025; Ministry of Labour and Employment publication | A dated 2025 progress snapshot, not a 2026 completion rate or an individual forecast. |
| 326,152 demand letters issued | Update posted 29 March 2025 on the 113th EPFO Executive Committee meeting | A later cumulative snapshot; it does not show how many cases remain in your regional office. |
| 22.8% month-on-month increase in processed applications | Same 29 March 2025 ministry/PIB update | A comparison with the prior month in that update, not a promised future rate. |
| 56,137 demand letters issued | EPFO Annual Report 2023–24 | An earlier financial-year figure superseded by later snapshots. |

What to do for each common status
“Application submitted” or no recent movement
Check the tracker regularly, keep your acknowledgement and wait for a case-specific communication. Because EPFO has not stated one nationwide completion target, the absence of a new message alone does not prove rejection.
“Pending with employer”
Send the employer the acknowledgement and request that it verify the wage and contribution records through the official process. Ask for a copy of what it submits. If the employer cannot locate records, collect authenticated salary and PF-office evidence and ask the regional office which substitute proof it will accept.
“Document required” or an objection
Submit the precise item requested, together with a short cover note identifying your application number and service period. Keep the upload receipt. If you believe the request overlooks an existing record, attach that record and explain the mismatch rather than sending unrelated files.
Demand issued
Reconcile the demand against the covered wages, months, interest and payment instructions. Use the calculator only to understand the scale; the regional office’s record-based figure governs. Raise a discrepancy before the due date stated in the communication.
Employer has shut down or refuses to cooperate
Do not fabricate an employer certificate. Preserve whatever authenticated payroll, salary-slip, PF-office and bank-remittance evidence you have, note your attempts to contact the employer, and ask the concerned regional office for the accepted route for a non-operating establishment.
Security and official-channel precautions
- Use the EPFO domains linked above and type them directly rather than following unsolicited payment links.
- Protect your UAN credentials and one-time passwords. EPFO warns that it does not request Aadhaar, PAN or bank details over the phone and does not ask members for monetary deposits.
- Never pay a private person to “unlock” a higher-pension approval, accelerate a demand or guarantee a result.
- Save screenshots or PDFs of status changes, uploads, acknowledgements and payment receipts.
A practical document-and-action checklist
- Record your current tracker status and acknowledgement number.
- Collect authenticated salary slips, employer letters, wage uploads, the joint request and undertaking, and any pre-4 November 2022 PF-office letter showing higher-wage contributions.
- Organise records by employer and month or financial year so the regional office can match them to service periods and changing wage ceilings.
- Ask the employer to address missing wage, contribution, charge or interest records when verification is pending.
- When a demand arrives, verify the period, basis, interest and payment route before remitting funds.
- Use the official portal and regional-office communication for the next required action; do not rely on old cut-off dates or unofficial calculators.
The Bottom Line
Higher pension is decided from validated employment and contribution records, not from a calculator result or a promised date. Track the live EPFO case, preserve Para 26(6) and wage evidence, respond to the employer or regional office, and treat only the office’s record-based demand as authoritative.
