EPF and PPF are not interchangeable accounts. EPF is tied to eligible salaried employment and is funded through employee and employer contributions. PPF is an individual account in the government small-savings system. That difference affects who can use each account, how money enters it, when it can be accessed and how tax rules apply.
India Post displayed a PPF interest rate of 7.1% per annum, compounded yearly on the savings page accessed in 2026. A current EPF rate for the relevant financial year was not verified in the official material reviewed for this article, so it would be misleading to declare one account the higher-return option. Compare eligibility, contribution structure, access rules, notified rates and your tax circumstances together.

What is the difference between EPF and PPF?
The simplest distinction is the relationship between the account and your work status:
- EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund): an employment-linked retirement benefit scheme for salaried employees. The Income Tax Department describes it as a scheme “available to salaried employees,” with contributions described from both employee and employer.
- PPF (Public Provident Fund): an individual small-savings account listed by India Post. It is not described as an employer-linked benefit in the official material used here.
These are different structures, not two versions of the same product. An employee may have EPF through work and also maintain a PPF account if the person meets the applicable PPF conditions. The relevant question is therefore not only “which rate is higher?” but also “which account can I use, how is it funded and when can I get the money?”

EPF and PPF compared
| Dimension | EPF | PPF |
|---|---|---|
| Basic structure | Employment-linked retirement benefit scheme for salaried employees. | Individual Public Provident Fund account in the government small-savings system. |
| Who the account is connected to | Eligible employment and the employer’s provident-fund arrangement. | The individual account holder, rather than an employer. |
| Funding described in official guidance | Employee and employer contributions. | Deposits made to the individual PPF account. |
| Displayed return figure | Current rate for the relevant financial year was not stated in the official material reviewed for this article. | 7.1% per annum, compounded yearly, on the India Post page accessed in 2026. |
| Rate certainty | Do not infer a current rate from an older notice; verify the applicable EPFO or Central Board notification. | The displayed rate is a point-in-time listing and can change when small-savings rates are notified. |
| Tax guidance | Recognized-fund employee contributions may qualify under section 80C; employer contributions, interest and withdrawals have conditions and thresholds. | PPF deposits are listed among section 80C eligible payments, subject to applicable rules and the taxpayer’s circumstances. |
| Withdrawal evidence used here | The Income Tax Department describes exemption after five years of service in stated circumstances and different treatment for earlier withdrawals. | Full current access, partial-withdrawal, maturity and extension rules must be checked in the current PPF scheme materials. |
The table separates facts that are established from figures or rules that need a current notification. A rate, tax label or withdrawal assumption should not be transferred from one provident-fund category to the other.
How EPF works
It follows eligible employment
EPF is built around a job and the employer’s provident-fund arrangement. That makes it fundamentally different from opening an individual savings account at a post office. If you change jobs, the way your existing EPF balance is handled can depend on employment continuity and transfer history; the tax guidance specifically indicates that those facts can matter when assessing withdrawals.

The Income Tax Department’s salary guidance describes EPF contributions from the employee and the employer. Your own contribution is therefore only one part of the account’s funding structure. The exact allocation, operational process and applicable limits should be confirmed through your employer’s current EPFO documentation rather than assumed from a PPF rule.
Return information must be current
EPF interest is set through the applicable official process for a financial year. The official material reviewed for this article did not establish the current EPF interest rate for the relevant year. Do not use an older EPFO notice to create a current EPF-versus-PPF ranking. Check the latest applicable EPFO or Central Board announcement before comparing returns.

Tax treatment is conditional
Recognized provident-fund employee contributions may qualify for a section 80C deduction, but the deduction is subject to the rules that apply to your tax position. Employer contributions and the interest credited to the account are not automatically covered by the same treatment. The Income Tax Department’s guidance discusses conditions for contributions, interest and withdrawals rather than offering a blanket “tax-free” result.
Withdrawal treatment changes with service history
The salary-income guide describes exemption for recognized provident-fund withdrawals after five years of service in stated circumstances and different treatment for withdrawals before five years. “Five years” should not be treated as a complete operational rule by itself: employment continuity, transfers and the specific fund category can affect the result. Obtain the current EPFO procedure and tax treatment for your individual record before withdrawing.
How PPF works
It is an individual small-savings account
India Post lists PPF among its savings schemes. The account is held by the individual, so it does not depend on an employer continuing to participate in a payroll arrangement. That can make PPF relevant to someone who wants a separate long-term savings vehicle, but eligibility, deposit mechanics and access are still governed by the notified PPF scheme.
The displayed PPF rate is 7.1% at the stated date
India Post’s savings page displayed 7.1% per annum, compounded yearly when accessed in 2026. This is a dated published rate, not a permanent promise. The Department of Economic Affairs’ small-savings page shows that rates are issued through dated government notices. Recheck the latest notice for the period in which you plan to deposit or compare funds.
PPF deposits appear in section 80C guidance
The Income Tax Department lists PPF deposits among payments that can qualify under section 80C. That statement does not mean every depositor receives a usable deduction: the applicable tax regime, the total of other eligible payments and the rules for the relevant year all matter. Treat the section 80C reference as an eligibility category to verify, not as an automatic tax saving.

Do not assume the full access schedule
The pages reviewed for this article did not establish all current PPF rules for account eligibility, partial withdrawals, maturity or extensions. Those details can determine whether PPF fits a particular goal. Read the current scheme text in the Department of Economic Affairs’ PPF Scheme, 2019 and related small-savings materials before committing money or planning a withdrawal.
Is PPF interest higher than EPF interest?
A responsible answer cannot be given from the figures established here. PPF is shown at 7.1% per annum, compounded yearly, on the India Post page accessed in 2026. No verified current EPF rate for the relevant financial year was available in the official material reviewed. Without both rates for the same period and the same measurement basis, saying that PPF is higher or lower would be speculation.
Rates also have different administrative contexts. PPF belongs to the small-savings rate-notification system, while EPF’s rate applies to the employment-linked provident-fund framework. Before making a decision:
- Note the financial year and date for both figures.
- Use an official India Post or Department of Economic Affairs notice for the PPF rate.
- Use the applicable EPFO or Central Board announcement for EPF.
- Check whether you are comparing a credited annual rate, a displayed rate or a rate from an earlier period.
- Then assess tax, contributions and access; a small nominal-rate difference may not outweigh a contribution or liquidity difference.
Are EPF and PPF both eligible for tax benefits?
Both can appear in tax-benefit discussions, but “both are tax-free” is too broad. The relevant tax questions are separate:
Employee contributions and section 80C
The Income Tax Department’s deductions guidance identifies section 80C as the provision under which specified payments, including PPF deposits and qualifying recognized-provident-fund contributions, may be considered. Whether a deduction is useful depends on the tax regime and your available section 80C room. Add your other eligible payments before estimating a benefit.

Interest on large employee contributions
The official tax guidance identifies thresholds for taxing interest on excess employee contributions: ₹2.5 lakh where the employer also contributes and ₹5 lakh where there is no employer contribution. These thresholds concern the taxation of interest on excess employee contributions; they are not a general cap on how much you may contribute. Do not present them as a universal EPF contribution limit.
Employer contributions
Employer contributions have their own conditions and thresholds in the salary-income tax rules. They should not automatically be treated as if they were the employee’s section 80C payment. Review the contribution components shown in your salary and provident-fund records.
Withdrawals
The Income Tax Department describes recognized-provident-fund withdrawals after five years of service as exempt in stated circumstances and gives different treatment for earlier withdrawals. The result depends on the fund category and the employment facts. PPF tax treatment should be checked against the current PPF and income-tax provisions rather than inferred from EPF rules.
For a filing decision, use the official salary-income guidance and income-from-different-sources guidance, and obtain professional advice when your contributions, job changes or withdrawals are complex.

Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
EPF may fit an eligible salaried employee who wants payroll-linked retirement saving
- Contributions are connected to employment and include an employer component as described in the tax guidance.
- The account is designed around retirement saving rather than a general-purpose cash reserve.
- Service continuity and transfer history can affect withdrawal tax treatment, so keeping employment records matters.
PPF may fit someone seeking an individual small-savings account
- The account is held by the individual rather than being dependent on an employer.
- India Post’s displayed rate was 7.1% per annum, compounded yearly, at the stated 2026 access date.
- You must accept the PPF scheme’s own deposit, access, maturity and extension conditions and verify them in the current rules.
Using both can address different roles
An eligible employee may use EPF for the employment-linked benefit and consider PPF as a separate long-term account, provided the combined commitments fit the household budget and tax position. Having two accounts does not remove the need to check each scheme’s rules. It also does not justify adding the rates together or assuming that the tax treatment of one account applies to the other.
Liquidity should decide as much as return
If you may need the money soon, do not choose solely from a displayed annual rate. EPF withdrawals are governed by employment and service-related conditions, while the complete current PPF access schedule must be confirmed in the notified scheme. Build an emergency reserve separately so that a long-term account is not treated as an everyday spending account.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical EPF-versus-PPF decision process
- Identify your access route. Confirm whether you are covered by an eligible employer provident-fund arrangement. If not, an employment-linked EPF comparison may not apply to you in the same way.
- List the money sources. Record your own proposed deposits and, for EPF, the employer contribution shown in your employment documents. Do not count an employer contribution as if it were your personal PPF deposit.
- Check the current rates. Date the PPF figure from India Post or a Department of Economic Affairs notice and the EPF figure from the applicable EPFO or Central Board notice. If either figure is missing, leave the rate comparison unresolved.
- Map your tax position. Add all section 80C items, identify the tax regime that applies to you and examine whether employee-contribution interest thresholds affect your case.
- Read the access rules. For EPF, verify service continuity, transfers and the current withdrawal process. For PPF, verify current eligibility, partial-withdrawal, maturity and extension provisions in the scheme text.
- Match the account to the goal. Use the account whose contribution structure and access conditions fit the purpose and time horizon, not the one with the most attractive isolated headline rate.
- Set a review date. Small-savings rates and tax rules can change. Recheck official notices before a new deposit, transfer or withdrawal decision.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing a current PPF rate with an old EPF rate: use figures for the same period and identify the issuing notice.
- Calling every provident-fund return tax-free: separate employee contributions, employer contributions, interest and withdrawals, then apply the conditions for the relevant fund.
- Treating ₹2.5 lakh or ₹5 lakh as a contribution ceiling: those figures concern taxation of interest on excess employee contributions in the circumstances described by the tax guidance.
- Assuming PPF has the same withdrawal rules as EPF: they are separate schemes. Read the current PPF rules instead of importing EPF service conditions.
- Ignoring employment continuity: EPF withdrawal treatment can depend on service history and transfers.
- Choosing from return alone: contribution source, access restrictions, tax position and purpose should be assessed together.
- Relying on an undated web summary: use the official India Post, Income Tax Department, Department of Economic Affairs and EPFO materials linked above and check their publication dates.

The Bottom Line
EPF is an employment-linked, two-source retirement arrangement; PPF is an individual government small-savings account. Compare them using current official rates, contribution structure, access rules and your tax circumstances. The displayed PPF rate was 7.1% per annum, compounded yearly, in the 2026 India Post listing, but a current EPF rate was not verified here—so no honest rate-based winner can be declared.
