The correct way to check your provident-fund records depends on who maintains your PF account. If your employer is covered directly by the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), sign in to the official Member Passbook portal with your UAN and password. If your employer operates an exempted PF trust, the UAN passbook normally will not be available; request your PF statement from the employer or trust instead. Claim status is a separate lookup that uses the EPFO office and PF account number.
A missing passbook does not, by itself, mean that contributions or records are missing. First identify whether your establishment is EPFO-managed or exempted, then use the matching route below.

EPF trust vs EPFO: what is the difference?
Both arrangements sit within India’s EPF framework, but the organisation maintaining your PF accumulation statement is different. In an EPFO-managed establishment, EPFO maintains the member account and provides the online passbook. In an exempted establishment, the company’s approved trust manages the PF accumulations and issues the member statement, while the pension fund remains with EPFO.

| Question | EPFO-managed establishment | Exempted establishment or trust |
|---|---|---|
| Who maintains the PF accumulation statement? | EPFO | The employer’s approved PF trust or establishment |
| Is a UAN passbook normally available? | Yes, through the EPFO Member Passbook service when the account is active and the service is available | EPFO says the passbook will not be available in the UAN portal |
| Where do you obtain a statement? | Download it from the EPFO Member Passbook portal | Request the PF statement from the establishment or trust |
| Who handles a missing statement? | EPFO’s member service and portal support routes | Your employer or the trust’s PF administrator |
| Can transfers involve extra paperwork? | Usually the online EPFO transfer workflow applies | Employer and trust steps may be required, including a physical claim in some transfer situations |
Do not assume every exempted trust gives members an identical interface or follows the same internal timetable. The trust’s own member service is the authoritative route for its statement and trust-specific paperwork.
How do I find out whether my account is EPFO-managed or trust-managed?
Start with the establishment that currently employs you or previously employed you. Ask payroll, HR, or the PF administrator directly whether the establishment is an exempted establishment and, if so, which trust maintains the PF accumulations. Ask where members are expected to obtain their annual or transaction-wise PF statement.
Use the passbook result as a clue, not as conclusive proof. If your UAN works but no passbook appears, the employer may be exempted. EPFO specifically directs members of exempted establishments to obtain the PF statement from the establishment. A missing passbook alone is therefore not evidence that contributions were never deposited.
You can also start from EPFO’s Member Home and the official For Employees information page. These pages provide EPFO’s member-facing routes, but they do not replace the employer or trust’s statement service for an exempted account.

How do I check my EPF balance and download a passbook for an EPFO-managed account?
Use the official EPFO Member Passbook portal. The service is for EPF Passbook and related member access; it is different from the separate claim-status lookup.
- Open the official Member Passbook portal.
- Enter your Universal Account Number (UAN), password, and the CAPTCHA displayed on the page.
- After signing in, select the member account or establishment entry shown for your UAN.
- Use the portal’s Download menu and choose Download Passbook, following the documented EPFO FAQ route when the passbook service is available.
- Save the PDF or print it for your records, and check that the member identity, establishment, contribution entries, and balance correspond to the employment period you are reviewing.
The passbook is a statement of the EPFO-maintained PF account. It is not the same thing as claim status: a passbook shows account transactions, while claim status tells you what happened to a submitted claim.
If you cannot sign in
Re-enter the UAN and password exactly as registered and complete the CAPTCHA shown by the portal. Do not give your password, OTP, Aadhaar, PAN, or bank details to anyone offering to “fix” the login. If the portal continues to show no passbook, stop treating it as a simple password problem and establish whether your employer is exempted.

| Method | Details currently listed by EPFO | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Missed call | Give a missed call to 9966044425 from the mobile number registered with your UAN, subject to the eligibility and conditions shown by EPFO. | A balance enquiry, not a downloadable passbook |
| SMS | Send EPFOHO UAN <LAN> to 7738299899, using the exact format and language code accepted on EPFO’s page. | A balance enquiry by text message |
| Help desk | EPFO lists 1800118005 as a help-desk or toll-free number. | General assistance; it does not turn an exempted-trust account into an EPFO passbook |
These services are useful for an EPFO-managed account when you need a quick balance indication. They do not provide the trust-issued statement for an exempted establishment. If the number, format, or eligibility message on the live EPFO page differs, follow the live page rather than an older copy of the instructions.
How do I get my PF statement from an exempted trust?
For an exempted establishment, contact the employer’s PF trust or the payroll/HR team designated to administer it. EPFO’s member FAQ says the UAN passbook will not be available for such an establishment and directs the member to the establishment for the PF statement.
- Ask your current or former employer to confirm that the relevant establishment is exempted and name the PF trust or administrator.
- Use the trust’s member-service channel specified by the employer. This may be a portal, email, help desk, or a written request; the exact channel is trust-specific.
- Request the PF statement for the employment period and account concerned. Include only the identifying information the trust’s official channel requires.
- Check the statement against your employment dates and contribution records. If an entry appears missing or incorrect, ask the trust or employer to explain the entry and the correction process.
- Keep the statement and the trust’s written responses. They are the records you will need if a transfer or service-history issue later requires employer involvement.
Do not use the absence of an EPFO passbook as a reason to open duplicate accounts or submit an unnecessary withdrawal claim. Confirm the arrangement first; an exempted trust can maintain valid PF records even though those records do not display in the UAN passbook.
Why is my EPF passbook not available?
Use this order of checks:
- Check the establishment type. Ask whether the employer is exempted. If it is, request the statement from the trust or establishment; that is the expected route.
- Confirm that you are using the correct UAN and member account. A UAN can be linked with employment records from more than one establishment, so select the relevant account shown after login.
- Retry the official passbook route. Use the live Member Passbook portal and its own login instructions rather than an unofficial site or a link sent by a caller.
- Separate a passbook problem from a claim problem. If your question is whether a transfer, withdrawal, or settlement has been processed, use the claim-status route described below; claim status is not displayed by simply downloading a passbook.
- Ask the employer or trust for written confirmation. If the establishment type or statement route is unclear, the employer’s PF administrator should identify who maintains the accumulation records.
EPFO’s FAQs do not say that every temporary portal error has the same cause. Therefore, do not infer a missing contribution, rejected claim, or lost record solely from an unavailable passbook. Identify the account administrator first.

How do I check my EPF claim status?
Claim status is a separate EPFO lookup. Use EPFO’s Know Your Claim Status help route.
- Open the Know Your Claim Status page.
- Select the EPFO office that maintains the account.
- Enter the PF account number requested by the form.
- If your account has no extension, leave the extension field blank rather than inventing a value.
- Submit the lookup and read the status returned for the claim.
The claim-status form asks for the maintaining office and PF account number. Keep those details from your employment or claim records; do not post them publicly or send them to an unsolicited caller.
Passbook, balance enquiry and claim status are different
| If you want to know… | Use… |
|---|---|
| Your EPFO account transactions and downloadable statement | The Member Passbook portal |
| A quick balance indication for an eligible EPFO-managed account | EPFO’s listed missed-call or SMS enquiry route |
| Whether a submitted claim has been received, processed, or settled | Know Your Claim Status |
| Your PF balance and statement in an exempted establishment | The employer or PF trust’s statement service |
How do transfers involving an exempted trust work?
A transfer involving an exempted trust is not simply the normal passbook download process. EPFO’s online-transfer FAQ describes different steps depending on whether the present or previous establishment is exempted. Because the FAQ may predate changes to online portals, confirm the current procedure with EPFO and the employer before submitting anything.

When your present establishment is exempted
The FAQ says the member submits the transfer claim through the present employer and supplies the trust bank-account details requested for the transfer. The employer or trust may need to validate and process the request before the transfer can proceed. Follow the current instructions given by the establishment’s PF administrator.

When your previous establishment was exempted
The described workflow creates an online claim for transfer of service details and a separate physical claim for transfer of PF accumulations from the previous trust through the employer. In practical terms, service history and PF money can involve different steps: the online part records service details, while the physical claim moves the accumulation held by the previous exempted trust.
Do not assume that a digital service-history transfer alone has moved the PF balance. Ask the employer or trust which part has been completed, what document remains, and where the physical claim must be submitted. Keep copies of forms, acknowledgements, and communications.
Security rules for EPF balance and claim checks
Use only official EPFO pages and the official employer or trust contact published by your establishment. EPFO’s Member Passbook page warns:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“Please never respond to any call for sharing any personal details like Aadhaar, PAN, Bank details, OTP or request for any payment.”
- EPFO will not require you to pay a caller to release your PF balance or settle a claim.
- Never disclose your UAN password, OTP, Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, or full identity documents to an unsolicited caller or message.
- Do not rely on a search advertisement, social-media account, or messaging-app contact when the official EPFO URL is available.
- For an exempted trust, verify the trust’s contact details through your employer’s established HR or payroll channel.
- If you suspect a fraudulent request, stop the conversation and use EPFO’s official member-support route rather than replying to the caller.
Common situations and the correct next step
| What you see | Most appropriate next step |
|---|---|
| The passbook opens and shows your account | Download the passbook and use it as your EPFO transaction statement. |
| Your UAN works but no passbook is available | Ask the employer whether the establishment is exempted; request the trust statement if it is. |
| You need to know whether a withdrawal or transfer claim was processed | Use Know Your Claim Status with the maintaining office and PF account number. |
| You need a balance quickly and have an EPFO-managed account | Check the live Member Passbook page for the missed-call and SMS options currently listed. |
| Your transfer includes an exempted previous or present establishment | Contact the employer or trust and follow the applicable online and, where required, physical claim steps. |
| A caller asks for OTP or payment to release your PF | End the call. EPFO warns members not to share personal details or make such payments. |
Which official route should you use?
For an EPFO-managed account, begin with the Member Passbook portal. For general member information, use EPFO’s For Employees page or Member Home. For a submitted claim, use Know Your Claim Status. For an exempted account’s balance or statement, use the employer or trust’s verified member-service channel because EPFO’s UAN passbook is not the statement source for that arrangement.
Portal labels, phone numbers, SMS rules, and transfer workflows can change. Check the live EPFO page immediately before relying on a contact detail or submitting a claim, and verify any trust-specific instruction with the establishment that maintains your PF records.
Quick Recap
What to remember
- EPFO-managed accounts use the official UAN-and-password Member Passbook portal.
- An exempted establishment’s PF accumulation statement comes from the employer or trust, not the UAN passbook.
- Claim status is a separate lookup requiring the maintaining office and PF account number; leave extension blank when there is none.
- Transfers involving exempted trusts can require employer participation and, in some cases, a physical claim for PF accumulations.
- Never share Aadhaar, PAN, bank details, OTPs, or passwords with callers, and never pay someone claiming to release your EPF money.
