EPF, EPS and EDLI: What Each Benefit Provides to a Worker’s Family in India

EPF is the deceased worker’s provident-fund balance, EPS is a possible monthly survivor pension, and EDLI is a separate death-insurance benefit. They are three different benefits with different eligibility tests. A family may claim more than one after the same death, but receiving one does not automatically establish entitlement to the others.

EPFO’s official death-claim paperwork can combine the three requests: Form 20 for the provident-fund payment, Form 10-D for pension and Form 5(IF) for EDLI. The forms can be submitted together, yet EPFO still decides each part under its own rules.

EPF, EPS and EDLI at a glance

Scheme What it can pay Main basis for eligibility Claim route identified by EPFO
EPF The member’s accumulated provident-fund balance, including applicable interest The member’s account balance and an eligible nominee, beneficiary or other claimant Form 20, or the PF section of the Composite Claim Form in Death Cases
EPS A monthly survivor, widow(er), children’s or other permitted family pension Family relationship, the member’s EPS record and the scheme’s conditions Form 10-D, or the pension section of the composite form
EDLI A death-insurance payment The member dies while in service and the date-specific EDLI calculation rules are met Form 5(IF), or the EDLI section of the composite form

These labels are not interchangeable. EPF is an account balance, EPS is a pension entitlement and EDLI is insurance. The family should check each benefit separately rather than assuming that a nomination or one approved claim settles all three.

What EPF pays after a member’s death

Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) is the savings balance maintained in the member’s provident-fund account. EPFO states that the balance and interest are payable in death cases. The normal death-claim route is Form 20, filed for final settlement in favour of the deceased member’s nominee or other eligible beneficiary.

What is included

  • The amount credited to the member’s EPF account up to the relevant settlement date.
  • Interest that EPFO has credited under the applicable rules.
  • Payment to the person or persons recognized under the nomination and scheme provisions, rather than automatically to every relative.

EPF is a one-time settlement of the account. It is not the monthly pension that may arise under EPS, and it is not the insurance payment under EDLI. A family can therefore receive an EPF settlement and still need a separate EPS claim or EDLI claim.

Nominee versus other claimant

An EPF nomination is important evidence for processing, but it does not erase the scheme’s requirements. If the nomination is missing, outdated, inconsistent with family records or disputed, EPFO may ask for additional proof and may apply the legal-heir or family provisions relevant to the case. The composite form asks for claimant, nominee, legal-heir and surviving-family-member information so that these relationships can be examined.

What EPS can provide

The Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) is a pension arrangement, not the provident-fund balance. EPFO describes its benefits as including superannuation or retirement, disability, survivor, widow(er) and children’s pensions. In a death case, the relevant benefit is usually a monthly payment to an eligible widow or widower and children, subject to the member’s EPS history and the conditions in force for the claim.

Possible survivor categories

The official EPS handbook describes provisions for widow or widower pension, children’s pension and orphan pension. It also discusses a nominee or dependent parent in specified situations. Those categories do not mean that every relative qualifies. The definition of family, the existence of a spouse or children, the member’s scheme record and the circumstances of death all matter.

The handbook available from EPFO is an older edition. Its historical minimums, examples or amounts should not be treated as current rates. For a live claim, use the current EPFO instructions and the member’s actual records rather than relying on an old table of pension figures.

How EPS is claimed

EPFO identifies Form 10-D for monthly pension claims. The pension section of the Composite Claim Form in Death Cases asks for claimant and beneficiary details and can be filed with the EPF and EDLI sections. Approval of the PF portion does not by itself approve the pension: EPFO must still confirm that the claimant meets EPS conditions.

What EDLI provides

The Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance (EDLI) Scheme is a separate insurance benefit associated with EPF membership. EPFO describes the benefit as payable when a scheme member dies while in service. That in-service condition is central; an EPF balance may remain payable even where EDLI is not available.

How the amount is determined

There is no single current amount that applies to every EDLI claim. EPFO’s calculator instructions use the date of death and the provident-fund balance and, for applicable date ranges, also consider continuous service and average wages. The calculation is therefore date-sensitive and record-sensitive. The calculator is an estimate tool, not a universal guarantee.

EPFO’s instructions also state that the insurance benefit is paid to nominees according to the shares recorded in the nomination. If nomination data are absent or contested, ask EPFO which evidence and distribution rules apply to that case.

EDLI claim form

The EDLI claim is made on Form 5(IF), either as a stand-alone submission or through the EDLI section of the composite death form. Keep the member’s service and EPF records available because the date of death, in-service status, balance and other inputs can affect the result.

Can a family claim all three benefits?

Often, the same death leads to three requests, but there is no automatic package. A family should test the conditions in this order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. EPF: confirm the member’s account and identify the nominee, beneficiary or other claimant recognized under the applicable rules.
  2. EPS: identify the surviving spouse, children or another potentially covered category and verify the member’s EPS eligibility and records.
  3. EDLI: confirm that the member died while in service and provide the records needed for the date-specific insurance calculation.

The official Composite Claim Form in Death Cases combines these requests under the labels Form-20 (PF Payment), Form 10-D (Pension) and Form-5 IF (EDLI). Combining forms is an administrative convenience, not a promise that every section will be approved.

Who may receive the money?

EPF and EDLI nominations

EPFO states that an EPF nomination applies to EDLI as well. The nomination can identify the people and shares to be considered for those benefits. The record must still be checked against the scheme and the facts of the death. A nomination that is incomplete, revoked, unavailable or inconsistent with later family circumstances can lead to requests for clarification.

EPS family rules

EPS uses its own family and dependency framework. A spouse and eligible children are considered under the pension rules; the handbook also describes orphan and, in specified circumstances, nominee or dependent-parent provisions. Do not assume that an EPF nominee automatically becomes the EPS pensioner. The pension claim requires its own claimant and beneficiary information.

When records are disputed

If relatives disagree about the nomination, marital status, children, legal heirs or bank details, do not submit contradictory declarations. Ask the EPFO office or the current portal channel what proof is required for that fact pattern. The correct evidence may include civil records or other documents, and the requirement can vary with the case.

How to file a death claim

1. Gather the member’s core details

  • Universal Account Number (UAN), member ID and the last establishment’s details, if available.
  • Date of death and the member’s service information.
  • Nomination details and records of the surviving spouse, children or other possible beneficiaries.
  • Bank-account information for the claimant, in the form and name accepted by EPFO.

2. Obtain the death certificate and supporting records

Older Form 20 instructions list a death certificate, claimant details and bank-payment information among the documents or particulars relevant to a death claim. Those instructions are from an older document, so treat them as examples and verify the current checklist before filing. Scan or copy every document clearly and keep the originals.

3. Choose the current filing channel

EPFO’s member portal currently displays online death-claim filing by nominees and pension claims by family members or nominees. Availability can depend on the claimant’s role, the member’s records and portal validation. Start with the current portal instructions or the EPFO office handling the member’s account; do not assume that an older PDF process is unchanged.

4. Complete the correct sections

  1. Use the PF section/Form 20 for the accumulated EPF balance.
  2. Use the pension section/Form 10-D for an EPS survivor claim.
  3. Use the EDLI section/Form 5(IF) for the insurance benefit.
  4. Enter claimant, nominee, legal-heir and surviving-family details consistently across sections.
  5. Provide the bank information exactly as required and review names, account numbers and dates before signing.

5. Submit through the employer or the route EPFO specifies

The older Form 20 instructions describe submission through the last employer and an alternative attestation route where an establishment has closed. Because employer and portal procedures can change, confirm the current route with EPFO, particularly if the establishment no longer operates or the employer cannot verify the claim.

6. Track each component separately

A query on the pension section can delay or reject that section without changing the decision on the EPF balance. Keep the acknowledgement, reference number and copies of every submission, and respond to document requests for each benefit.

Documents and information checklist

  • Death certificate in the form currently accepted by EPFO.
  • Member identifiers, including UAN or member ID where available.
  • Nomination record, if accessible.
  • Claimant’s identity and relationship details.
  • Surviving spouse and children’s details for an EPS claim.
  • Legal-heir or other relationship evidence when nomination records are missing or disputed.
  • Bank-account proof and payment particulars required by the current form or portal.
  • Service and wage records that may be needed for an EDLI calculation.

This list reflects the kinds of information identified in EPFO forms and instructions; the live portal or dealing office may request more or different documents for a particular case.

Why an amount cannot be quoted in advance

EPF depends on the balance and interest actually credited to the member’s account. EPS depends on scheme eligibility and the claimant’s family status. EDLI uses date-specific rules and records such as the date of death, provident-fund balance and, where applicable, continuous service and average wages. These moving parts mean that a single advertised rupee figure would be misleading.

EPFO’s overview material contains legacy EDLI amount language, while the EPS handbook is an older edition. Neither should be used to promise a present-day cap, minimum pension or combined total. Check the latest EPFO rules, the current member portal and the applicable calculator with the member’s records.

Common problems and practical fixes

The name on the nomination does not match the claimant

Do not alter documents informally. Submit the available nomination and relationship records, explain the discrepancy and ask EPFO what legal-heir or identity proof is required.

The employer is closed or uncooperative

Older Form 20 instructions describe an alternative attestation route for a closed establishment. Confirm the present procedure with EPFO and retain evidence that the establishment cannot process the claim.

The family expects EDLI after any death

EDLI is tied to death while in service. Ask EPFO to check in-service status and the applicable calculation period rather than assuming that an EPF account automatically produces insurance.

Only one section of the composite form was processed

Review the acknowledgement to see whether PF, pension and EDLI were all selected and accepted. Follow up on the missing section with its form name and reference number; a composite submission can still result in separate decisions.

Online filing is unavailable

Portal access can depend on claimant type and record validation. Use the current EPFO directions or contact the responsible office for the permitted offline or assisted route instead of relying on an old instruction PDF.

Checking the latest EPFO rules

EPFO’s member portal displays current death-claim routes and a notice referring to the EPF Scheme, 2026. That current notice is a reason to verify forms, eligibility language and submission channels immediately before filing. Official PDFs can remain online after procedures or amounts have changed, so check their date and compare them with the live portal or an EPFO office response.

The safest approach is to prepare all three potential claims, submit only the sections for which the family has a plausible entitlement, and let EPFO apply the scheme-specific tests. Keep a written record of questions and answers, especially where the nomination, family relationship or service status is unclear.
