Enterprise Products Partners vs. Energy Transfer: Distribution, Debt, and Business Comparison

Enterprise Products Partners and Energy Transfer are large publicly traded partnerships with different strengths. Enterprise offers the clearer record of steadily raising its distribution and reports lower leverage on a directly disclosed, current basis. Energy Transfer operates the larger reported network and recently posted faster year-over-year growth in adjusted EBITDA and distributable cash flow. The better choice depends on whether you value balance-sheet conservatism and distribution history, or broader scale, diversification and growth exposure.

This comparison uses issuer-reported periods through October 12, 2026. The figures are not a valuation recommendation, and the two partnerships do not report every measure using identical definitions.

At a glance: what separates EPD from ET

  • Enterprise Products Partners (NYSE: EPD): An integrated midstream partnership focused on natural gas, natural-gas liquids, crude oil, refined products and petrochemicals. Its disclosed leverage and distribution-coverage figures provide the cleaner conservative-income case.
  • Energy Transfer (NYSE: ET): A larger, more geographically distributed system spanning natural-gas, crude, NGL and refined-product transportation, storage, terminals and fractionation. Its latest quarterly release showed strong year-over-year operating growth, but the leverage figure available in the cited outlook is a management target rather than a reported quarter-end result.
  • Neither is automatically “better.” Compare distribution policy, coverage, debt definitions, capital requirements, business mix and your ability to handle partnership tax reporting before deciding.

Distribution comparison

Enterprise’s distribution record and coverage

Enterprise reported that 2025 was its 27th consecutive year of distribution growth. For 2025, the partnership declared $2.175 per common unit, generated $7.9 billion of operational distributable cash flow (DCF), reported 1.7x operational DCF coverage and retained $3.2 billion of DCF after distributions.

Its selected second-quarter 2026 data showed distribution coverage of 1.91x for the quarter and 2.09x for the first half of the year. Enterprise declared a third-quarter 2026 distribution of $0.56 per common unit on October 8, 2026, equivalent to $2.24 annualized. That is a declared amount, not a yield: a yield calculation also requires the unit price on a specified date.

Energy Transfer’s distribution policy

Energy Transfer reported a second-quarter 2026 common-unit distribution of $0.34, or $1.36 annualized. The release described it as the nineteenth consecutive quarterly increase. Energy Transfer also reported $2.59 billion of adjusted DCF attributable to partners for the quarter.

Energy Transfer’s DCF is a non-GAAP measure calculated under the partnership’s own definitions. The dollar amount by itself does not establish a coverage ratio or prove that the distribution will remain at the same level. Investors should read the reconciliation in each quarterly release and examine the cash retained after distributions.

Why the two quoted distribution amounts are not a yield comparison

Partnership Quoted distribution Period and announcement What can be concluded
Enterprise Products Partners $0.56 per common unit; $2.24 annualized Q3 2026 distribution declared October 8, 2026 The latest declared EPD amount in the cited disclosures; current yield still requires a dated unit price.
Energy Transfer $0.34 per common unit; $1.36 annualized Q2 2026 distribution The latest ET amount in the cited Q2 release; it refers to a different quarter from EPD’s figure.

Because the declarations cover different quarters and no same-day market prices are supplied here, ranking the partnerships by current yield would be misleading. Use the ex-distribution date, closing unit price and the same annualization convention when making that calculation.

Those ratios are not simply debt divided by EBITDA. Enterprise says its leverage calculation adjusts debt for the average rating-agency equity credit assigned to junior subordinated notes. That basis should remain attached whenever the ratios are quoted.

Enterprise separately reported $34.7 billion of total debt principal and approximately $5.2 billion of liquidity at December 31, 2025. Those are older, year-end figures and should not be mixed with the June 2026 snapshot without retaining their dates.

What is—and is not—known about Energy Transfer’s leverage

Energy Transfer’s 2026 outlook cited a rating-agency leverage target of 4.0x to 4.5x EBITDA. This is a target for the outlook period, not an actual second-quarter 2026 leverage ratio. The available Q2 material includes borrowing-capacity and debt-issuance information, but it does not provide a same-definition quarter-end net-debt-to-EBITDA figure that can be placed directly beside Enterprise’s ratio.

A complete credit review would also examine maturities, interest costs, secured versus unsecured debt, liquidity, committed capital spending and access to capital markets.

Business scale and operating mix

Enterprise’s integrated network

Enterprise describes a connected midstream system serving natural gas, NGLs, crude oil, refined products and petrochemicals. Its activities include gathering, processing, transportation, storage, terminals and marine transportation. In an October 2026 release, Enterprise reported more than 50,000 miles of pipelines, more than 300 million barrels of storage capacity and 14 billion cubic feet of natural-gas storage capacity.

An integrated network can let the partnership move products between several stages of the value chain and customer markets. It also means that performance depends on utilization, contract structures, commodity volumes, project execution and the economics of each product line rather than on a single pipeline.

Energy Transfer’s broader reported footprint

Energy Transfer’s Q2 2026 materials describe approximately 140,000 miles of pipeline and associated infrastructure across 44 states. Its businesses include natural-gas midstream operations; intrastate and interstate transportation and storage; crude-oil transportation; NGL and refined-product transportation and terminals; and NGL fractionation.

The partnership also has interests in Sunoco LP and USA Compression Partners. Those affiliates broaden the portfolio beyond a straightforward pipeline comparison and add additional operating and financial variables. Energy Transfer’s Q2 report cited record NGL transportation and exports, as well as growth in crude transportation and midstream gathering. Where acquisitions contribute to results, reported growth should not automatically be treated as entirely organic.

Cash flow and recent growth

Enterprise’s cash-generation profile

Enterprise’s 2025 results show a substantial retained-cash component after distributions, while its 2026 coverage data shows cash flow exceeding the declared distribution for both the quarter and the first half. In second-quarter 2026 selected data, Enterprise reported distributable cash flow of $2.315 billion and Adjusted EBITDA of $2.829 billion.

Energy Transfer’s latest growth figures

Energy Transfer reported second-quarter 2026 Adjusted EBITDA of $5.07 billion, up 31% year over year, and adjusted DCF attributable to partners of $2.59 billion, up 32%. These are issuer-defined non-GAAP measures. Their differing adjustments mean that the dollar totals should not be used as a direct productivity or coverage contest against Enterprise’s figures.

Which partnership has the safer distribution?

No distribution is risk-free, but the available evidence points in different directions.

  • Enterprise’s case: The long record of annual increases, reported coverage above one times for 2025 and the first half of 2026, retained cash and the directly disclosed lower leverage provide several supporting indicators for an income-oriented investor.
  • Energy Transfer’s case: Nineteen consecutive quarterly increases and strong year-over-year Q2 growth show distribution momentum. Its larger and more diversified network may spread exposure across products and regions, although the available evidence does not establish a comparable current coverage ratio or leverage actual.
  • What neither record proves: Historical increases do not guarantee future increases. A distribution can be maintained by borrowing, asset sales or reduced capital spending, so inspect operating cash flow, maintenance requirements, growth capital and debt maturities together.

If “safer” means the strongest combination of presently disclosed leverage and coverage metrics, Enterprise has the more favorable documented profile. If it means greater exposure to a larger, faster-growing operating platform, Energy Transfer may be the more relevant candidate, subject to its debt and execution risks.

Partnership structure and K-1 tax reporting

Both securities are common units of publicly traded partnerships, not corporate common stock. Their cash payments are generally described as distributions rather than dividends. Investors may receive a Schedule K-1 instead of, or in addition to, the reporting associated with a corporate dividend, and the information can arrive after the normal tax-filing season begins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Taxable income, cash distributions, state filing obligations, basis adjustments and the treatment of units held in retirement accounts can vary by investor. Enterprise maintains an investor-relations K-1 information resource. Confirm current support with the issuer and consult a qualified tax professional for your circumstances; a K-1 software feature or service does not determine your tax result.

Also distinguish common units from any preferred units or other securities. Voting rights, distribution priority, conversion features and tax treatment can differ, so read the specific offering documents rather than assuming that every security issued by either partnership has the same rights.

A practical framework for comparing EPD and ET

  1. Set the measurement date. Record the unit price, declaration date, payment date and financial-period end. Do not combine a current price with an old distribution or an old balance sheet without labeling the mismatch.
  2. Normalize the distribution. Convert each declared quarterly amount to an annual figure using the same convention, then divide by the dated unit price. Keep special distributions, one-time increases and regular payments separate.
  3. Read coverage definitions. Identify whether the partnership uses operational DCF, adjusted DCF, distributable cash flow attributable to partners or another measure. Review the reconciliation and the denominator used.
  4. Compare leverage on the same basis. Match net debt with net debt, total debt with total debt, and LTM EBITDA with the same EBITDA period. Note rating-agency equity credits and other adjustments.
  5. Map the business mix. List exposure to natural gas, NGLs, crude, refined products, petrochemicals, storage, terminals and fractionation. Then assess how much cash flow is supported by contracted fees versus volume, spread or commodity-sensitive results.
  6. Check growth funding. Examine project spending, acquisitions, expected in-service dates and the cash left after distributions. Growth that requires continual external capital carries a different risk from growth funded internally.
  7. Review portfolio concentration. For Energy Transfer, include the effects of its interests in Sunoco LP and USA Compression Partners. For Enterprise, consider how its integrated network links several commodity chains and customer markets.
  8. Plan for tax administration. Confirm whether you can receive and process a K-1, whether your account type is suitable and whether you need professional help before buying units.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Calling a distribution a dividend: The terminology can obscure partnership tax and basis mechanics.
  • Comparing annualized amounts from different quarters: EPD’s cited declaration is for Q3 2026, while ET’s cited amount is for Q2 2026.
  • Treating a leverage target as an actual result: ET’s 4.0–4.5x figure is an outlook target, not a reported Q2 2026 ratio.
  • Assuming non-GAAP DCF is standardized: Enterprise and Energy Transfer define and reconcile their measures differently.
  • Using mileage as a return measure: Pipeline miles and storage capacity show footprint, not margins, returns or distribution coverage.
  • Ignoring acquisition effects: A reported increase can include acquired assets and may not represent organic expansion.
  • Ranking yield without a price date: Annualized distribution divided by an unspecified price is not a reproducible current yield.
  • Projecting past increases indefinitely: Distribution history is evidence, not a promise.

Which investor profile may fit each partnership?

Enterprise may fit an investor who prioritizes

  • A long, clearly documented distribution-growth history.
  • Reported coverage and retained cash as part of the income analysis.
  • A lower current leverage signal based on a disclosed quarter-end calculation.
  • An integrated midstream network across several hydrocarbon products and services.

Energy Transfer may fit an investor who prioritizes

  • A larger reported physical footprint across many states.
  • Exposure to multiple transportation, storage, terminal and fractionation businesses.
  • Recent year-over-year growth in EBITDA and DCF.
  • Broader portfolio exposure through interests in additional publicly traded partnerships.

These profiles are starting points, not personalized recommendations. Unit price, valuation, tax status, portfolio concentration and risk tolerance can change the decision even when the operating facts are the same.

Bottom line

Enterprise Products Partners is the stronger documented choice for an investor emphasizing distribution longevity, visible coverage and lower reported leverage. Energy Transfer offers greater reported scale, wider geographic and product exposure and stronger recent quarterly growth, but the available comparison does not provide a same-definition quarter-end leverage ratio or coverage figure. Make the final choice only after matching dates, definitions, prices and tax considerations.
