Enterprise AI Infrastructure Buying Guide: Servers, Storage and Networking Checklist (2026)

Buy infrastructure only after you quantify the workloads, service levels and facility limits it must serve. For most enterprises, the defensible path is to select a validated architecture (or a cloud equivalent), then verify GPU memory, storage throughput, network topology, power, cooling, software support and three-year operating cost against measured requirements. A generic server quote is not proof that a rack, data hall or operations team can run an AI cluster.

  • Choose PCIe RTX PRO systems for inference and visual workloads where air cooling, space or power are constrained.
  • Choose HGX systems when distributed training, fine-tuning, large GPU memory and high-speed GPU interconnects dominate.
  • Choose rack-scale NVL72 designs only when very large models and exceptionally high output justify their facility and integration demands.
  • Separate hot training/checkpoint storage from shared files, object data and archive tiers.
  • Size GPU and storage fabrics independently, and require application-level throughput and tail-latency results at your planned node count.

1. Translate the business problem into engineering requirements

Infrastructure decisions become expensive when a team starts with a preferred GPU or server model instead of a workload definition. NVIDIA’s reference-architecture guidance treats workload and infrastructure strategy as one decision: the design must fit available space, power, cooling, network integration and existing tools. Write a requirements sheet before requesting quotes.

Workload profile

  • Model families and size: record parameter counts, context length, expected precision (for example, FP16, BF16, FP8 or INT8) and whether models are dense or mixture-of-experts.
  • Training and fine-tuning: specify jobs per day, target completion time, checkpoint interval, restart tolerance and the percentage of capacity reserved for experiments.
  • Inference: define tokens per second, first-token latency, total-response latency, concurrent users, batch size and peak-to-average demand.
  • Agentic AI, retrieval and HPC: document tool-call rates, index-build frequency, simulation runtimes and any CPU-heavy preprocessing that could starve GPUs.
  • Growth: model expected dataset, user and model growth over three years rather than sizing only for today’s pilot.

Data and governance

  • Inventory data sources and formats, including databases, documents, images, video, telemetry and streaming feeds.
  • Estimate hot data, working-set size, checkpoint volume, index size, retention period and annual churn.
  • Record residency, sovereignty, encryption, legal hold and disaster-recovery requirements for each geography.
  • Specify whether tenants require isolation, dedicated capacity, audit trails or separate encryption keys.

Success metrics and financial guardrails

Set acceptance metrics before comparing vendors: jobs per hour, tokens per second at a stated concurrency, p95 or p99 latency, recovery-point objective, recovery-time objective and maximum tolerated failed-node rate. Build a three-year operating model that includes hardware, software subscriptions, electricity, cooling, facilities work, networking, storage expansion, support, spares, staffing, financing or depreciation, and cloud egress where applicable. The cited industry sources publish no universal enterprise ROI or TCO figure, so your own utilization and workload measurements must drive the investment case.

2. Select the architecture family that matches the workload

Validated architecture families reduce integration risk by defining compute, networking, storage, software and scale ranges together. They are not interchangeable product names: each makes different assumptions about density, interconnect and facility capability.

Architecture Best fit Facility and integration profile Important qualification
RTX PRO AI Factory Inference, visual computing, model serving and enterprise applications that need flexible PCIe expansion PCIe-based, generally air-cooled, suitable for tighter space and power envelopes Validate memory capacity, host-to-GPU bandwidth and server airflow for the exact chassis.
HGX AI Factory Distributed training, fine-tuning and workloads that need large GPU memory pools and high-speed GPU-to-GPU links Dense accelerator nodes with specialized interconnects; higher rack power and cooling requirements Performance depends on the complete GPU, fabric, storage and software topology, not the accelerator name alone.
NVL72 Rack-scale operation of very large models and exceptionally high AI output Integrated rack-scale design with substantial power, cooling, cabling and service-planning demands Use only when the model and throughput economics justify rack-scale deployment.

NVIDIA’s current reference-architecture overview states a vendor-reported 15x higher token throughput for HGX B300 than HGX H100 and 50x increased AI Factory output for NVL72. Those are directional maximums from NVIDIA, not independent results for every model, precision, batch size or software stack; require a proof run using your workload.

3. Choose servers and accelerators from a validated bill of materials

Validate the complete node, not just the GPU. The bill of materials should identify the accelerator, memory, interconnect, chassis, host CPU, system RAM, PCIe lane map, local NVMe, NICs, redundant power supplies, management controller, firmware and supported operating system.

GPU and chassis checks

  • Confirm physical slot width, card length, auxiliary-power connectors and airflow direction. A card that fits mechanically may still exceed the chassis thermal or electrical envelope.
  • Check GPU memory capacity against the largest model, batch and context window you will run. Account for framework overhead, key-value cache, optimizer state and checkpoint buffers.
  • Verify whether GPU-to-GPU communication uses the required NVLink or equivalent fabric and whether the topology is fully connected, partially connected or oversubscribed.
  • Confirm host CPU cores, NUMA placement, system RAM and PCIe lanes for data loading, preprocessing and storage I/O.
  • Require redundant PSUs, out-of-band management, secure-boot options and a documented replacement procedure.

Reference examples and scale ranges

NVIDIA’s endorsed designs include specific OEM combinations and node ranges. Examples are planning patterns, not a universal shopping list:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
System example Accelerator example Published design range Topology label in the reference
Dell PowerEdge XE7740/XE7745 RTX PRO 6000 or H200 NVL 4–16 nodes 2-8-5-200
HPE ProLiant DL380a Gen12 RTX PRO 6000 16–32 nodes Not stated
Lenovo SR680a V3 HGX B200 or H200 4–32 nodes 2-8-9-400
Supermicro systems Multiple validated accelerator configurations 4–32 nodes Varies by design

The validated component list identifies an RTX PRO 6000 at 600 W, dual-slot, with 96 GB of GDDR7, and an RTX PRO 4500 at 165 W, single-slot. Treat those as the stated card specifications in the validated designs; confirm current revisions and regional availability in the supplier quote.

Acceptance evidence to require

  • Firmware, GPU-driver, CUDA/container, Kubernetes and orchestration versions tested together.
  • Burn-in results, thermal logs and a documented acceptance test at your intended workload.
  • Failure and replacement commitments, including GPU, NIC, SSD, switch and power-supply procedures.
  • Measured scaling efficiency and communication time at the node count you will purchase.
  • Spare-unit recommendations and the effect of a failed node on service-level objectives.

4. Design storage as multiple performance tiers

AI clusters often fail to reach accelerator utilization because storage is treated as a capacity purchase. Separate data by access pattern and measure sustained bandwidth, small-file behavior, metadata operations, latency, concurrency, resiliency and recovery.

Tier Typical contents Design questions
Hot training and checkpoint Active datasets, shards, checkpoints and temporary artifacts Can it sustain concurrent reads and checkpoint writes without starving GPUs? What is the recovery time after a failed device?
Shared file Team workspaces, source data and files requiring POSIX-style semantics How do NFS or SMB throughput, metadata rate, snapshots and quotas behave under many workers?
Object Raw data lake, immutable datasets, model packages and long-lived artifacts Are S3-compatible APIs, lifecycle policies, versioning and replication available?
Backup and archive Older checkpoints, compliance copies and disaster-recovery data What are retention cost, restore throughput, geographic replication and recovery-point guarantees?

Protocol and software integration

Confirm NFS, SMB or S3 support as appropriate, CSI drivers for Kubernetes, GPUDirect Storage or an equivalent direct-I/O path, snapshots, replication and observability. Test millions of small files and metadata-heavy workloads separately from large sequential reads; a headline throughput number does not predict either behavior.

NVIDIA’s AI Data Platform collaborators include DDN, Dell, HPE, Hitachi Vantara, IBM, NetApp, Nutanix, Pure Storage, VAST Data and WEKA. This is a starting shortlist of validated ecosystem participants, not a statement about price, contract terms or suitability for your data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In its March 18, 2025 AI Data Platform announcement, NVIDIA reported maxima of up to 1.6x higher storage performance than CPU-based approaches, up to 50% lower power, more than 3x performance per watt, up to 48% faster AI storage traffic and up to 15x faster data extraction. These are vendor-reported maximums under stated test conditions; request the workload, configuration and measurement method before applying them to a business case.

5. Build two network fabrics when the design requires it

GPU-to-GPU traffic and storage traffic can contend for the same links. Document whether your architecture uses separate GPU and storage fabrics or a converged design, then model east-west bandwidth, oversubscription, congestion and failure domains.

GPU fabric checklist

  • Map every GPU, NIC, switch and cable to the reference topology.
  • Confirm RDMA, congestion-control settings, adaptive routing and telemetry.
  • Measure collective-communication time and application scaling, not only nominal link speed.
  • Provide redundant paths and define the behavior when a link, NIC or switch fails.

Storage fabric checklist

  • Size aggregate read and write bandwidth for simultaneous training, checkpoint and inference traffic.
  • Measure p95 and p99 latency under peak concurrency and during rebuild or failover.
  • Verify optics, cable lengths, transceivers, firmware and DPU or SmartNIC compatibility.
  • Check Kubernetes Network Operator, storage CSI and monitoring integration.

NVIDIA’s endorsement process checks whether topology aligns with Enterprise Reference Architecture design points; Spectrum-X is an explicit endorsement dimension. Treat any named fabric as a topology-and-software commitment, not merely a faster switch. Ask for measured application throughput at your planned node count.

6. Prove rack power, cooling and facility readiness

Calculate steady-state and peak draw for GPUs, CPUs, memory, storage, switches, DPUs, fans and conversion losses. Add UPS and generator headroom, account for startup behavior, and verify breaker, busway and power-distribution limits with the facilities team.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Configuration example Rack power cited by IDC’s 2025 HPE assessment How to use the number
Private Cloud AI developer 2.2 kW Planning anchor for a small development configuration, not a universal developer-rack requirement.
Small 12 kW Use as an example of a production rack envelope; confirm your exact server and network mix.
Medium 13 kW Check breaker capacity, PDU balance and cooling at sustained load.
Large 17.4 kW Evaluate high-density cooling, floor loading and service clearances before ordering.

The same assessment associates these configurations with 400GbE networking. The figures are published examples, not guarantees for another OEM or accelerator combination.

Facility sign-off checklist

  • Verify available utility capacity, UPS and generator reserve, rack PDUs, voltage and phase.
  • Confirm cold-aisle or hot-aisle containment, airflow volume, inlet temperature and humidity limits.
  • Determine whether direct-to-chip or other liquid cooling is required at the proposed density.
  • Check floor loading, ceiling height, delivery route, cable trays, noise limits and maintenance clearance.
  • Obtain written facilities approval before signing a hardware order; a server quotation does not establish site readiness.

7. Include software, security and lifecycle support in the purchase

Map GPU drivers, CUDA and container versions, Kubernetes, GPU Operator, Network Operator, NIM, Run:ai and monitoring components to a supported matrix. Decide who owns upgrades and how long each branch remains supported.

Security controls

  • Use identity federation, least-privilege roles, secrets management, tenant isolation and immutable audit logs.
  • Enable secure boot, signed firmware, vulnerability scanning and controlled access to model and training data.
  • Define encryption in transit and at rest, key ownership, data-deletion workflows and incident response.
  • Separate management, storage and workload networks where policy requires it.

NVIDIA AI Enterprise documents independent application and infrastructure layers, compatibility explorers, release branches and end-of-support dates. Use those matrices to plan patch windows, rather than assuming that a newly released driver is supported by every appliance component.

Operations and staffing

  • Automate provisioning, node labeling, driver installation, health checks and replacement workflows.
  • Set scheduling, quotas, capacity reservations and chargeback or showback rules before users arrive.
  • Monitor GPU utilization, memory errors, fabric counters, storage latency, power, temperature and job-level throughput.
  • Price 24×7 support, on-site spares, escalation times and the skills needed for Linux, Kubernetes, networking, storage and facilities.

8. Compare on-premises, hybrid and cloud placement

Model Advantages Costs and risks to test Best when
On-premises or colocated Predictable data location, low recurring data-transfer cost and control over hardware Up-front capital, utilization risk, facilities work, staffing and hardware refresh responsibility Demand is steady, data sovereignty is strict and the organization can operate the platform.
Hybrid Keep sensitive or latency-critical data local while bursting experiments or peaks elsewhere Data movement, identity, networking, duplicated tooling and egress charges Baseline demand is predictable but peaks or specialized accelerators are occasional.
Cloud Elastic capacity, rapid access to new accelerators and no owned data-hall build Hourly accelerator cost, storage and egress, quota limits, tenancy controls and variable availability Demand is uncertain, projects are short-lived or internal facilities cannot support the density.

Compare the same workload and service level across models. Include data-ingest and egress, idle capacity, reservation commitments, software licensing, personnel, backup, disaster recovery and the cost of moving models or datasets out later.

9. Run a disciplined procurement and proof process

  1. Freeze the requirements sheet. Record model, precision, throughput, latency, concurrency, data, retention, geography, security and growth assumptions.
  2. Choose two or three architecture patterns. Include at least one validated appliance design and one customizable or cloud alternative.
  3. Request complete bills of materials. Require exact GPU, memory, CPU, RAM, NVMe, NIC, switch, cable, firmware and support SKUs.
  4. Demand a topology drawing. It should show GPU fabric, storage fabric, oversubscription, redundancy and failure domains.
  5. Perform a workload proof. Run representative training, checkpoint, retrieval and inference jobs at target concurrency. Capture throughput, p95/p99 latency, scaling efficiency, power and thermal data.
  6. Complete facilities review. Approve rack locations, power, cooling, floor loading, delivery and maintenance access before issuing a purchase order.
  7. Negotiate lifecycle terms. Put firmware support, replacement SLA, spare parts, security response, upgrade rights and exit assistance in the contract.
  8. Model three-year economics. Use measured utilization and power, not vendor maximums, and include expansion and decommissioning costs.
  9. Stage acceptance. Require burn-in, security validation, monitoring, failover and documented handover before final payment.

10. Score suppliers on evidence, not brand recognition

Use a weighted scorecard agreed by engineering, finance, security and facilities. Suggested categories are validated architecture and BOM transparency; GPU and memory availability; storage performance and data services; network topology and telemetry; power and cooling fit; software lifecycle; security and compliance; deployment services; warranty and replacement SLA; interoperability and exit options; and three-year total cost.

NVIDIA’s partner and collaborator lists can create a shortlist, but they do not establish price, contract quality, regional stock or performance for your workload. Ask every finalist for dated availability, support boundaries, acceptance criteria and references for a deployment of comparable scale.

11. Common failure modes and corrective actions

Buying GPUs before checking the facility

Symptom: the selected rack exceeds breaker, cooling or floor limits. Correction: have facilities approve a rack-level power and thermal model before the configuration is locked; reduce density, move to a liquid-cooled design or place the workload elsewhere.

Using nominal link speed as a performance promise

Symptom: training scales poorly despite high-speed switches. Correction: inspect topology, oversubscription, RDMA configuration, collective-communication time, congestion counters and tail latency under load.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing storage by capacity alone

Symptom: GPUs idle while workers wait for metadata, small files or checkpoint writes. Correction: separate hot, shared, object and archive tiers; benchmark the actual file-size mix and concurrent worker count.

Ignoring software lifecycle

Symptom: a security patch or driver update breaks the cluster. Correction: pin a supported matrix, maintain a staging environment, define patch windows and track branch end-of-support dates.

Assuming an appliance removes all integration work

Symptom: the delivered system passes component checks but fails application throughput or operational tests. Correction: require workload acceptance, observability, failure drills and documented handover; validated architecture lowers integration risk but does not replace testing.

12. A finance-ready decision rule

Approve a purchase only when one architecture meets the measured service levels, has written facility sign-off, and remains viable under a conservative three-year utilization forecast. If demand is uncertain or highly seasonal, preserve optionality with a smaller on-premises baseline and burst capacity. If demand is steady, data is difficult to move and the organization can operate the platform, a validated owned or colocated cluster may offer more predictable economics. In every case, make the supplier prove the complete system—accelerators, fabric, storage, software, power and support—against your workload rather than against a headline specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

As NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang said on March 18, 2025, “Data is the raw material powering industries in the age of AI.” The practical buying implication is that data movement, storage and governance deserve the same design attention as GPUs.
