Short answer: Ecosia’s August 21, 2025 proposal was real, but “$0 for Chrome” is misleading. The Germany-based search nonprofit offered no upfront purchase payment for a 10-year stewardship arrangement. Google would keep Chrome’s ownership and intellectual property, while Ecosia would operate the browser and share projected proceeds, directing most of its share toward climate projects. No source establishes that Google accepted the proposal or that Ecosia took control of Chrome.
What Ecosia actually proposed
Ecosia described a public-interest operating model rather than a conventional acquisition. It wanted Chrome moved “out of Google’s monopoly” for 10 years, with Ecosia responsible for stewardship while Google retained ownership and intellectual-property rights. The proposal was reported on August 21, 2025. Engadget reported the $0-upfront offer, while Ecosia’s explanation describes the proposed structure.

Acquisition, stewardship and a foundation are different
- Acquisition: a buyer obtains ownership of Chrome or receives the asset from Google.
- Stewardship: an operator runs Chrome for a fixed term while Google remains the owner.
- Foundation model: Chrome is governed outside Google’s ordinary corporate control for a public-interest purpose.
Ecosia’s idea combined the latter two concepts. It would have sought operational authority and a mission-led governance model, not a free transfer of Google’s property.

Why the upfront payment could be zero
The economic trade was future revenue, not a free asset. Ecosia would avoid a large closing payment, run the browser for a decade, and divide the resulting proceeds. Google would receive a substantial economic return while retaining ownership and intellectual property. That makes the offer closer to a long-term operating concession than to “buying a trillion-dollar browser for nothing.”

The proposed economics
All of the following figures came from Ecosia’s proposal and are projections, not audited results or an established valuation of Chrome.
| Item | Proposal | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Upfront payment | $0 | No purchase payment at closing under the reported arrangement |
| Term | 10 years | Proposed stewardship period |
| Projected Chrome profit | Approximately $1 trillion | Ecosia’s estimate over the full decade |
| Projected payment to Google | Approximately $400 billion | About 40% of projected proceeds, according to Ecosia |
| Share retained for Ecosia’s model | Approximately 60% | Media coverage describes the majority as funding for operations and climate work |
| Proposed climate spending | About $30 billion annually | Ecosia described this as climate-solution funding, including a proposed first-loss facility for renewable-energy projects |
The $1 trillion figure therefore does not mean Chrome was worth $1 trillion today. It was a forecast of cumulative profit under Ecosia’s assumptions about search revenue, costs, user behavior and regulation.
Why Chrome mattered in Google’s antitrust case
The proposal emerged during the U.S. Department of Justice’s search-monopoly litigation. The DOJ said Google handled approximately 90% of U.S. search queries for years and argued that distribution agreements and preferential placement helped preserve Google’s search and search-advertising monopolies. The DOJ’s remedies announcement explains the government’s position.

Chrome can influence which search engine is presented by default, how easily users switch providers and how Google’s search relationship is reinforced across devices. Government filings also characterized Chrome as a valuable, separable, revenue-generating asset. The government argued that Chrome could be technically separated from Google backend services, although a real transition would require extensive engineering and contractual work. What the DOJ ultimately ordered
On September 2, 2025, the DOJ announced remedies that barred Google from entering or maintaining certain exclusive distribution contracts involving Google Search, Chrome, Google Assistant and Gemini. The order also prohibited tying the licensing or revenue share of one Google product to another, required specified search-index and user-interaction data access for qualifying rivals and potential rivals, and required Google to offer search and search-text-ad syndication services to eligible competitors.
That announcement did not establish a transfer of Chrome to Ecosia. The DOJ’s case page lists a December 5, 2025 Final Judgment along with later compliance reports, orders and appellate filings, showing that the litigation continued after the initial remedies announcement: DOJ Google case page.
Why regulators or Google might consider the idea
Possible advantages for Google
- Google could keep receiving substantial long-term revenue without an outright sale.
- It could retain Chrome’s intellectual property and potentially continue supplying technical services.
- A mission-oriented arrangement might be presented as less disruptive than transferring the browser to another large commercial technology company.
Possible advantages for regulators
- Google would no longer operate Chrome directly.
- A steward with a public-interest mission might have less incentive to use the browser solely to favor Google Search.
- A fixed term could create a transition mechanism without immediately auctioning Chrome.
These are arguments for the proposal, not evidence that Google, the court or the DOJ endorsed it.
The unresolved problems
Valuation and execution
Chrome’s profitability would depend on search-default agreements, advertising economics, infrastructure and staffing costs, user behavior, competition and regulation. Ecosia’s forecast could be materially wrong; the projected climate funding is not guaranteed cash.

- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory

Governance and neutrality
A nonprofit or mission-led operator would still need to secure engineers, maintain global security and privacy programs, set product policy and negotiate distribution contracts. Regulators would have to test whether Ecosia could favor its own search engine, whether Google retained too much influence through ownership or services, and whether the revenue split created new steering incentives.
Technical dependencies
Chrome relies on update and security systems, account infrastructure, the Chrome Web Store, Google services and connections to ChromeOS and enterprise products. Chromium is open source, but that does not make the branded Chrome product—including Google-controlled services, infrastructure, staff and distribution—automatically transferable.
What happens after 10 years?
A credible agreement would need rules for renewal, sale, reversion, data governance, staffing and dispute resolution. Those terms were not fully specified in Ecosia’s public explanation.
What happened to the proposal?
No reviewed source shows Google accepting the stewardship plan, a court approving it, or Ecosia taking operational control. It remains a proposal made in the context of the antitrust case, not an announced transaction. The same qualification applies to claims that Chrome “became a foundation” or that Ecosia “won” the browser.

What Chrome users should expect
There is no established user-facing takeover to act on. The proposal itself did not change Chrome’s ownership, interface, default search engine or update process. Readers interested in Ecosia can try its search and browser services at ecosia.org; that is a separate consumer choice, not evidence of a Chrome transfer. Frequently Asked Questions
Did Ecosia offer to buy Chrome for $0?
No. It offered $0 upfront for a proposed 10-year operating-stewardship arrangement while Google retained ownership and intellectual property.
Did Ecosia take control of Chrome?
No completed transfer or Google acceptance is established by the cited sources.
How much money would Google receive?
Ecosia projected approximately $400 billion over 10 years, but that was a proposal-based estimate, not realized revenue.
The Bottom Line
Ecosia’s headline-making $0 offer described the upfront payment for a proposed stewardship deal—not the total value of Chrome and not a completed purchase. Google would have kept ownership, Ecosia would have operated the browser for 10 years, and most projected proceeds would have supported its mission. No evidence shows that arrangement took effect.
