eBay vs. Facebook Marketplace (US): Fees, Shipping, and Buyer Protection

Short answer: For a US transaction that needs nationwide reach, tracked delivery, and a published dispute process, eBay is usually the more predictable choice. For a local, inspect-before-you-buy exchange, Facebook Marketplace can be simpler, but its shipping availability, fees, and buyer recourse depend on location and the exact checkout route. Neither platform is automatically the cheapest or safest for every item.

This comparison focuses on eBay.com in the United States. Facebook Marketplace policies and delivery features vary by location, account, listing, and transaction type. A local pickup is not equivalent to an in-app shipped order, so evaluate them separately.

What you are actually comparing

“eBay versus Facebook Marketplace” combines two different transaction models. eBay is a marketplace built around platform checkout, shipping workflows, seller fees, and a documented Money Back Guarantee for eligible purchases. Facebook Marketplace supports local person-to-person exchanges and, in some locations, platform-supported delivery or shipping. The protections and costs can change dramatically depending on which route you use.

For a useful decision, compare the complete transaction rather than a headline fee:

  • the buyer’s total delivered cost, including shipping and applicable tax;
  • whether payment and checkout stay on the platform;
  • whether a carrier provides tracking and delivery evidence;
  • which problems qualify for a refund, and the reporting deadline;
  • the seller’s record, communication, and willingness to document the item; and
  • the seller’s category-specific fees, packaging expense, time, and expected selling price.

The sections below separate those issues so a low apparent fee does not hide a higher-risk transaction.

Fees: eBay has a published baseline; Facebook requires an exact checkout check

eBay.com seller fees in most categories

eBay’s US fee schedule is not one flat charge. For most categories, the published baseline is:

Charge Published US baseline What it means
Insertion fee 250 listings per month at zero insertion fee After the monthly allowance, each additional listing costs $0.35. Category, account, and promotional exceptions can apply.
Final-value fee 13.6% of the total sale amount up to $7,500 per item; 2.35% on the portion above $7,500 This is the baseline for most categories, not every category or seller.
Per-order fee $0.30 for orders of $10 or less; $0.40 for orders above $10 Applied in addition to the percentage fee under the published schedule.

eBay generally defines the “total amount of the sale” to include the item price, handling, shipping collected from the buyer, sales tax, and other applicable amounts. Category-specific rates can differ for products such as books, handbags, jewelry, watches, and selected collectibles. Optional listing upgrades, Store status, seller performance, international selling, and other account circumstances can also change the total. Check the current eBay selling-fees schedule before listing.

Example: why the eBay percentage is not the whole cost

Assume a US seller in a category that uses the “most categories” baseline lists a $100 item, charges the buyer $15 for shipping, and has already used the 250 no-insertion-fee listings. Before sales tax and any category-specific adjustment, the amount subject to the percentage is $115. The 13.6% portion is $15.64, and the order fee is $0.40, for a subtotal of $16.04. Because eBay’s total amount generally includes sales tax and other applicable amounts, the actual fee can be higher. This example also excludes optional upgrades, shipping-label cost, packaging, refunds, and income-tax effects.

Use the example as a method, not a universal quote: change the category, shipping charged, tax assumptions, seller status, and listing choices to match your sale.

Facebook Marketplace fees are transaction- and location-dependent

Facebook’s official help pages indicate that delivery or shipping may be unavailable in some locations and that sellers may be able to offer shipping depending on where they live. The available information does not establish one complete, current fee schedule that applies across countries, categories, and transaction types. Do not assume that a Marketplace listing is universally free.

The same seller can therefore see different economics for a local cash exchange, a platform-mediated shipped order, and an off-platform payment request.

Shipping and delivery

eBay’s “Ship with eBay” option

Eligible individual sellers can use eBay’s Ship with eBay feature for a prepaid label or QR code, with tracking uploaded automatically. The published eligibility description is limited: the item and buyer must be in the United States, the package must fall within specified size and weight limits, the Buy It Now price must be $200 or less, and the listing must be in a participating category. Business accounts, auctions, and several other situations are excluded.

That limit matters. An eBay listing can support shipping without qualifying for this particular label workflow, and the seller may use another shipping method under different terms.

Who pays shipping on eBay?

If the seller does not offer free shipping, the buyer pays the shipping amount shown at checkout and eBay collects it for the prepaid label. If the seller offers free shipping through this feature, the seller pays the label amount shown during listing; that amount is deducted when the item sells. “Free shipping” therefore means free to the buyer, not cost-free to the seller.

Before publishing, the seller should check the package dimensions and weight, compare the displayed label price with the amount charged, and keep the drop-off receipt or acceptance scan. The automatic tracking upload helps both sides, but it does not eliminate the need to package the item safely or meet the listing’s handling time.

Facebook shipped orders versus local pickup

Meta’s delivery guidance says Marketplace delivery is unavailable in some locations and that sellers may be able to offer shipping based on where they live. A listing that shows a shipping option is a different transaction from one arranged for local collection.

Feature Local Marketplace pickup Marketplace shipped or delivered order, where available
Carrier tracking None unless the parties arrange it themselves May be shown in the platform flow; verify what the specific order provides
Inspection Buyer can usually inspect before handing over payment, if the parties agree Inspection normally occurs after delivery, subject to the exact terms
Payment May be cash, an instant-transfer service, or another method agreed by the parties May use an in-product checkout or another route; confirm before paying
Dispute path No assumption of a universal Marketplace refund process Depends on the exact platform-mediated transaction and current terms

For pickup, agree in writing on the meeting location, price, accepted payment, and whether the buyer may test or inspect the item. Meet in a public place when practical, avoid sending deposits to reserve ordinary goods, and do not treat a seller’s request to move payment off-platform as equivalent to protected checkout.

Buyer protection and what happens when something goes wrong

eBay Money Back Guarantee

For eligible eBay.com purchases, the eBay Money Back Guarantee policy covers common problems including an item that does not arrive, arrives wrong, is broken or damaged, is faulty, or is materially unlike the listing. The policy’s own summary states: “The eBay Money Back Guarantee applies when the buyer doesn’t receive an item.” That sentence is subject to the policy’s eligibility conditions and exclusions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To preserve the potential coverage, the buyer must:

  • complete and pay through eBay;
  • use an eligible payment method;
  • follow the policy’s reporting, return, and response requirements;
  • buy an item and category that are not excluded; and
  • keep the order, messages, photographs, tracking, and return records.

Non-delivery deadlines

For a non-delivery claim, the policy generally allows a report after the estimated or actual delivery date and sets a latest reporting point of 30 calendar days after that date. After the buyer opens a request, the seller generally has three business days to respond. These are policy terms, not a promise that every dispute will end in the same decision; eligibility, evidence, exclusions, and compliance with the procedure still matter.

Open the request from the order record rather than negotiating indefinitely through private messages. If eBay asks for photographs, a return, or additional information, meet the stated deadline. A buyer who pays outside eBay or accepts a seller’s request to cancel and re-pay elsewhere may lose the protection that depended on the original checkout route.

Facebook Marketplace does not have one universal guarantee for every deal

The available Meta material supports safety guidance and seller-rating information, but it does not establish a broad, equivalent refund guarantee for every Marketplace transaction. Coverage can depend on whether the order used a platform-mediated checkout or shipping feature, the location, the item, and the current terms shown for that order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Meta says seller ratings become public after five or more ratings. It also says it does not verify that reviewers actually purchased or used the item or service. Ratings can be a useful signal, but they are not proof of authenticity, condition, delivery, or refund eligibility. Read the current Marketplace ratings explanation and shopping-safety guidance for the account and transaction you are considering.

Buyer decision guide

Choose eBay when these factors matter most

  • Nationwide selection: You need to buy from a seller outside your local area.
  • Tracked delivery: The item is valuable, fragile, or difficult to replace, and a carrier scan is important.
  • Documented recourse: You want a clearly defined process for non-delivery or an item that is materially wrong.
  • Comparable listings: You want to compare several sellers’ prices, shipping charges, condition descriptions, and feedback in one search.

Choose a local Marketplace pickup when these factors matter most

  • Physical inspection: You can examine, test, measure, or authenticate the item before paying.
  • Speed and convenience: The seller is nearby and you can complete a straightforward exchange without carrier transit.
  • Oversized goods: Furniture and other items that are expensive or impractical to ship can be collected locally.
  • Clear, low-risk payment: You are not being asked for a deposit, gift card, wire transfer, or other hard-to-recover payment.

Do not choose by the displayed item price alone

For an eBay purchase, add shipping and applicable tax to the item price, then consider whether the checkout route and policy fit the item’s risk. For Marketplace, add any delivery or payment charge shown in the exact flow and assign a value to the ability—or inability—to inspect the item. A $10 lower listing price can disappear after shipping, tax, packaging, travel, or a failed-transaction risk.

Seller decision guide

Questions to answer before listing on either platform

  1. What is the realistic selling price? Compare completed or current listings where available, not only optimistic asking prices.
  2. Can the item be shipped safely? Measure and weigh the packed item, identify fragile parts, and price suitable packaging.
  3. Do you need a national audience? Specialized items may justify eBay’s fees because more buyers can find them.
  4. Can a buyer inspect it? For local pickup, describe defects and agree on inspection before payment.
  5. What records will you retain? Save the original description, photographs, serial numbers where appropriate, messages, payment confirmation, and shipping or handoff evidence.

When eBay’s cost can be worthwhile

eBay’s published percentage and order fee reduce the seller’s proceeds, and shipping labels or packaging add more cost. In exchange, the seller gets a structured listing and checkout environment, access to buyers beyond the local area, and a defined process for eligible disputes. For an uncommon item, the additional audience can produce a higher gross price that outweighs the fee.

When local Marketplace can be practical

Local pickup can avoid carrier damage, shipping-label expense, and the time required to pack an oversized item. The trade-off is that the seller must manage meeting arrangements, payment verification, personal safety, and the absence of an assumed universal refund process. A seller should not advertise “shipping available” until the account and location actually show that option.

Step-by-step: buying safely

For an eBay purchase

  1. Open the full listing and confirm the condition, included accessories, seller location, handling time, and return terms.
  2. At checkout, record the item price, shipping, tax, and total. Make sure the payment remains inside eBay.
  3. Keep the order confirmation and seller messages. Do not accept a request to cancel and pay through another route.
  4. Track the parcel and check the package before discarding its packaging. Photograph damage, labels, and the item if the condition is disputed.
  5. If it is late, missing, wrong, damaged, faulty, or unlike the description, use the order’s help or return flow promptly and follow the policy deadline.

For a Marketplace pickup

  1. Review the seller’s profile, listing history, photographs, description, and ratings, remembering that ratings are not verified proof of a completed purchase.
  2. Ask specific questions about defects, ownership, age, serial numbers, included parts, and why the seller is selling. Keep the answers in Messenger.
  3. Choose a public meeting location and tell someone where you are going. For large items, bring enough help and a vehicle suited to the load.
  4. Inspect and test the item before payment. Confirm that the item matches the listing and that accessories or paperwork promised by the seller are present.
  5. Use the agreed payment method only after inspection. Obtain a receipt or written acknowledgment for expensive items.

For a Marketplace shipped order

  1. Confirm that the listing shows an available shipping or delivery option for your location.
  2. Read the checkout screen for shipping charges, taxes, payment destination, tracking, cancellation rules, and any stated purchase protection.
  3. Pay through the displayed platform flow when you want the platform’s stated process to apply; do not assume a private payment has the same coverage.
  4. Save the order record, tracking, messages, and photographs of the package and item.
  5. Use the current in-product support route immediately if the parcel is not delivered or the item does not match the listing.

Step-by-step: selling with fewer disputes

  1. Describe the item precisely. State model, measurements, age, defects, repairs, compatibility, included parts, and actual condition. Avoid language that could be read as a guarantee you cannot support.
  2. Photograph evidence. Use clear images of all sides, damage, serial or identifying marks where appropriate, accessories, and the packed parcel before sealing it.
  3. Choose the transaction route deliberately. On eBay, decide whether to offer free shipping or charge the buyer and verify whether your listing qualifies for Ship with eBay. On Marketplace, confirm whether shipping is available or list for pickup only.
  4. Verify payment. Do not hand over an item because a buyer shows a screenshot or an email claiming payment. Confirm the funds in the actual account or platform record.
  5. Document handoff. For shipping, retain the label, acceptance scan, tracking number, and package photographs. For pickup, record the date, item, amount, and buyer acknowledgment.
  6. Keep communications on-platform when possible. A clear message history can establish what was promised, while moving to private channels can make a dispute harder to document.

Common pitfalls and fixes

“Marketplace is free, so it is cheaper.”

Why it fails: Shipping, payment, delivery, or service charges can depend on location and checkout route, and a local trip has a cost even when no platform fee appears.

Fix: Compare the final amount shown at checkout—or the complete pickup cost—with eBay’s item price, shipping, tax, and applicable fees.

“A Marketplace rating guarantees the seller.”

Why it fails: Meta says ratings become public after five or more ratings and that reviewers are not verified as purchasers or users.

Fix: Treat ratings as one signal. Inspect the item, ask for evidence, use a safer meeting and payment plan, and avoid irreversible payments.

“Free shipping costs the seller nothing.”

Why it fails: Under the described eBay prepaid-label workflow, the seller pays the label amount when free shipping is offered.

Fix: Build the expected label and packaging cost into the listing price and verify the amount displayed during listing.

“A tracking number proves the buyer received the right item.”

Why it fails: Tracking mainly documents carrier movement and delivery. It does not prove that the contents matched the description or survived transit.

Fix: Photograph the item, serial marks where appropriate, packing process, and sealed parcel; use adequate protection and retain the acceptance record.

A practical comparison checklist

Question eBay.com, US Facebook Marketplace
Are seller fees published? Yes, with a baseline and category-specific exceptions. Most categories list 250 zero-insertion-fee listings monthly, then $0.35 per additional listing; the common percentage baseline is 13.6% up to $7,500 plus a per-order fee. No single universal schedule is established across locations and transaction types; inspect the listing and checkout.
Is shipping available? Yes, but specific prepaid-label eligibility is limited; other shipping methods may be used. Depends on location, account, listing, and the feature offered.
Who pays shipping? Buyer pays when the seller charges shipping; seller pays the label amount when offering free shipping through the described feature. Depends on the exact listing and checkout; local pickup has no carrier charge but may involve travel or other costs.
Is tracking available? Automatic tracking upload for eligible Ship with eBay labels; other methods vary. Verify in the specific shipped-order flow; local pickup has no carrier tracking.
Is there a buyer guarantee? Eligible purchases can use the Money Back Guarantee for stated non-delivery and item-condition problems, subject to requirements and deadlines. No universal guarantee should be assumed for every transaction; coverage depends on the exact platform-mediated route and current terms.
Can the buyer inspect first? Normally no; inspection follows delivery and the applicable policy. Yes for a mutually agreed local pickup, before payment.

How to make the final choice

For a high-value or hard-to-replace item shipped across the country, start with eBay if the listing, checkout, and policy eligibility meet your needs. Price the complete transaction and save the records required for a potential claim.

For an oversized item or a purchase where condition is best judged in person, start with local Marketplace pickup. Make inspection, meeting safety, and payment verification the priorities rather than assuming a platform refund.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a Marketplace shipped order, decide only after the exact checkout screen is clear. If shipping availability, fees, tracking, payment destination, or recourse is not stated, ask the seller or choose a transaction with terms you can verify.

For sellers, use the platform whose audience and logistics justify its costs. eBay’s fees are easier to model but can materially reduce proceeds; Marketplace may simplify local exchanges but leaves more responsibility with the parties. In both cases, an accurate description and a complete transaction record are the strongest defenses against preventable disputes.
