Down 17% in 2026: Is Meta a Buy on the Dip?

Meta may suit a long-term investor willing to tolerate unusually high AI spending, legal uncertainty and weak near-term cash flow, but a 17% decline is not an automatic buy signal. The percentage depends on the measurement window: Zacks reported a 17.4% year-to-date decline on August 21, 2026, while a Yahoo Finance analysis cited a 17.35% one-year decline on September 8. Meta’s advertising engine remains powerful, yet investors are repricing the stock around the cost and timing of its artificial-intelligence build-out.

The sensible approach is conditional and staged: assess whether advertising growth can continue funding infrastructure, whether free cash flow recovers, and whether AI products produce measurable revenue before committing a large position. What does Meta being “down 17%” actually mean?

There is no single 17% figure. Zacks’ 17.4% decline was measured year to date on August 21, 2026. Yahoo Finance’s 17.35% figure was a one-year drawdown cited on September 8. Different start dates, closing prices and intraday measurements can produce similar percentages without describing the same loss.

That distinction matters because a stock can be down sharply from a recent high while still showing a different return over the calendar year. Before deciding that META is “cheap,” identify the reference date, whether the comparison uses closing prices, and whether dividends or corporate actions are included.

Why did Meta fall after beating on revenue?

The selloff centered on cash spending rather than a collapse in user or advertising demand. Meta’s third-quarter 2026 revenue was $64.601 billion, up 26% year over year, but costs and expenses rose 68% to $51.613 billion. Management also raised the lower end of 2026 capital-expenditure guidance to $135 billion while keeping the top end at $145 billion.

Third-quarter free cash flow was negative $2.12 billion. That result makes investors more sensitive to the possibility that AI infrastructure commitments will suppress margins and cash returns for several years. Meta’s SEC filing warns that higher infrastructure costs, debt and legal commitments could reduce cash flow, margins and profitability for the foreseeable future.

Reported profit was also distorted by a large legal provision. Meta recorded a $9.89 billion charge connected to an agreement with 52 U.S. state attorneys general. Third-quarter operating income was $12.988 billion, down 37% year over year; Meta said it would have been $22.878 billion excluding that charge. Diluted earnings per share were $3.83 as reported versus $7.40 excluding the charge, according to Meta’s October 21, 2026 earnings release.

Is Meta’s advertising business still strong?

Yes, the latest operating figures show a growing core business. Family daily active people averaged 3.64 billion in the third quarter. Ad impressions increased 10%, while the average price per ad increased 14%. Revenue growth of 26% indicates that advertisers are still paying for access to Meta’s large and engaged audience.

Meta says artificial intelligence is already improving recommendations, user engagement and advertising tools. Those gains are important because the advertising business is the source of cash expected to support the company’s long AI investment cycle. The risk is not that demand has already disappeared; it is that incremental advertising revenue may grow more slowly than the servers, data centers and talent required to produce it.

How much is Meta spending on AI, and what does it get in return?

Meta guided to $135 billion–$145 billion of 2026 capital expenditures. That range covers a spending program large enough to dominate the near-term investment case. Management says the return from frontier models and infrastructure will take longer to develop, even though AI recommendations and ad systems are producing current benefits.

Meta launched Muse and Muse Wonder, which it describes as its first frontier models. The company expects strong overall revenue growth through 2027 but has not issued a full-year 2027 revenue forecast. Investors therefore have to judge progress through operating indicators rather than a detailed long-range earnings target.

Indicator Latest figure or outlook Why it matters
2026 capital expenditures $135 billion–$145 billion, Meta guidance Sets the scale of the cash commitment before AI returns are fully visible
Q3 2026 free cash flow Negative $2.12 billion Shows that accounting profit is not currently converting into surplus cash after investment
Q3 2026 revenue $64.601 billion, up 26% year over year Demonstrates continuing demand from the advertising franchise
Ad impressions and average price Up 10% and 14%, respectively Shows both volume and pricing contributed to monetization

What is the bull case for buying META?

The bullish argument is that Meta’s advertising franchise can finance a multi-year AI expansion and eventually earn more than the infrastructure costs. Better recommendations can increase time spent, improved targeting can raise advertiser returns, and new AI products could create additional revenue streams.

UBS Global Research analyst Stephen Ju, quoted by Kiplinger, described Meta as entering a “capex harvest cycle,” arguing that three years of frontier-AI investment could begin translating into stronger advertising performance and faster adoption of AI products. That is an analyst view, not a guaranteed outcome.

Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg said in the October 21, 2026 earnings release: “Our investments are paying off, the core business is strong, and we’re seeing velocity across the board.” The statement captures the bull case, but investors still need evidence that the payoff will exceed the cost of capital.

What could make the dip worse?

AI returns may lag spending

If monetization develops slowly, negative free cash flow and additional infrastructure commitments could pressure valuation. A high-growth revenue story provides less protection when the company is consuming large amounts of cash.

Reality Labs remains a substantial loss

Meta expects Reality Labs to lose $18 billion–$19 billion in 2026 and about $15 billion in 2027 as investment is reallocated toward AI. The forecast implies improvement, but the division remains a major drag and could require further funding if product adoption disappoints.

Legal and regulatory exposure is unresolved

The state-attorney-general agreement can cost up to approximately $18.59 billion, with $9.89 billion charged in the third quarter. Youth-related trials, antitrust matters and other government inquiries remain active. Meta’s SEC filing notes that outcomes are inherently unpredictable and could be material.

Governance is changing

A new Class C share structure is planned for implementation in January 2027. Changes to share classes can affect voting rights and capital-structure complexity, so investors should read the final filing rather than assume existing governance arrangements will remain unchanged.

Is META cheap after the AI-spending selloff?

Available valuation commentary is mixed and should not be treated as a definitive intrinsic-value calculation. A September Yahoo Finance analysis cited about 18 times projected 2027 earnings and reported that 55 of 62 analysts rated the shares Buy. An October Investing.com analysis estimated only about 1% upside to its fair-value figure and said negative cash flow reduced the margin of safety.

Valuation reference Published view Limitation
Yahoo Finance analysis, September 2026 About 18× 2027 earnings; 55 of 62 analysts rated Buy Depends on forecast earnings and analyst assumptions
Investing.com analysis, October 2026 About 1% estimated upside to fair value Negative cash flow limits the margin of safety

These measures answer different questions: one uses a forward earnings multiple, while the other compares a modeled fair value with the market price. Neither resolves how much future AI cash generation should be worth.

How should a long-term investor decide whether to buy the dip?

Use a staged-entry plan only if Meta fits your time horizon, risk tolerance and portfolio allocation. A practical checklist is:

  1. Define the position limit. Decide the maximum percentage of your portfolio before buying, and avoid using leverage for a company facing large spending and legal commitments.
  2. Split the entry. Consider several smaller purchases rather than committing all capital at one price. The purpose is risk management, not a prediction that the bottom has been reached.
  3. Set review triggers. Reassess after each earnings report, especially when management updates capital-expenditure guidance or free-cash-flow expectations.
  4. Require operating evidence. Look for sustained ad-price and impression growth, measurable engagement gains from recommendations, and signs that Muse products are moving toward monetization.
  5. Recheck the risk budget. Update assumptions for Reality Labs losses, legal outcomes, debt needs and the Class C implementation before increasing the position.

Which numbers should investors watch next?

The most decision-relevant signals are 2027 capital-expenditure guidance, quarterly free cash flow after that spending, ad pricing, ad impressions, evidence of revenue from Muse and other AI products, Reality Labs losses, and developments in state, youth-safety and antitrust proceedings. A strong revenue report alone is not enough if cash conversion continues to deteriorate.

Meta can be a reasonable staged-entry candidate for an investor who believes its advertising network will fund profitable AI products and who can withstand prolonged volatility. Investors who need near-term cash generation, low legal risk or a wide valuation margin of safety should wait for clearer evidence rather than treating the 17% decline as a bargain by itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Meta’s 17% decline measured from its all-time high?

Not necessarily. The cited figures use year-to-date and one-year windows, not a confirmed peak-to-trough calculation. A peak-to-trough loss would require specifying the exact highest closing price and the comparison date.

Does negative free cash flow mean Meta is unprofitable?

No. Free cash flow measures cash left after operating needs and capital expenditures, while accounting profit includes non-cash items and does not subtract all investment in the same way. Meta reported positive operating income in the quarter even as free cash flow was negative.

What happens when Meta’s Class C shares are implemented?

The planned January 2027 structure adds another share class and may change voting and capital-allocation mechanics. Investors should review the company’s definitive filing for conversion terms and voting rights before assuming their influence is unchanged.

How can I limit risk if I buy META now?

Use a predefined maximum portfolio allocation, buy in installments and keep a written rule for when to stop adding. Do not fund the position with money needed for near-term expenses or with borrowed money.
