What to do amid mixed signals: treat this earnings cluster as a scenario test, not a one-number trade. Microsoft and Alphabet (Google) report after the close on October 28, 2026, followed by Amazon on October 29. The key question is whether strong cloud and AI demand is converting quickly enough into durable margins and free cash flow to justify record capital spending. Compare each company’s cloud growth, AI monetization, spending guidance, cash conversion and contractual commitments, then keep Federal Reserve policy, Treasury yields and oil prices in the risk case. That framework can help investors decide whether to hold, hedge or wait, but it is not an individualized buy or sell recommendation.
What are the Microsoft, Google and Amazon earnings dates and expectations?
Schwab’s consensus table, published October 20, 2026 and subject to change, puts Microsoft and Alphabet on October 28 after the close and Amazon on October 29 after the close. Microsoft’s investor-relations calendar also lists its fiscal 2027 first-quarter release for October 28.

| Alphabet (Google) | October 28, after close | $3.02 | $128.1 billion | 25.2% |
| Microsoft | October 28, after close | $4.72 | $90.7 billion | 16.7% |
| Amazon | October 29, after close | $1.96 | $202.2 billion | 12.3% |
The estimates are market expectations as of October 20, not guarantees. Schwab, citing FactSet, said expected Magnificent Seven earnings growth was 33% year over year in 2026, below the 65.1% expected for the S&P 500 information-technology sector.
Why can Dow Jones futures look mixed before strong earnings?
Futures can reflect a conflict between excellent demand and concern about what that demand costs. Schwab highlighted persistent inflation, higher Treasury yields, geopolitical tension, possible additional rate hikes, record capital expenditure, debt and off-balance-sheet commitments. Reuters described the earnings week and the Federal Reserve meeting as a test for an AI-led rally, with investors focused on spending guidance and the returns generated by that spending.

Market conditions were already volatile. Kiplinger’s October 26 recap reported West Texas Intermediate crude at $101.48 a barrel after a rise of more than 12% in October, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 52,361, the S&P 500 at 7,676 and the Nasdaq Composite at 26,169. Those are dated market snapshots, not forecasts. Rising oil can reinforce inflation concerns, while higher yields reduce the present value investors assign to distant technology profits.
What should investors watch as the Magnificent Seven report earnings?
Read the releases and calls for evidence that revenue growth is becoming profitable, repeatable and cash-generative. A headline beat can still disappoint if management raises spending sharply or lowers the expected return on new capacity.

Microsoft: Azure economics and Copilot adoption
- Azure growth and capacity: Schwab reported Microsoft Cloud revenue growth of 26% year over year in the prior quarter, alongside a slight gross-margin decline. Look for an explanation of capacity additions and whether demand is constrained by supply.
- Copilot monetization: Track paid-seat adoption, pricing, renewal behavior and the mix between large enterprise contracts and early trials.
- Cloud margin and cash flow: Compare incremental AI infrastructure costs with Microsoft Cloud margins, capital expenditure and free-cash-flow guidance.
Kiplinger reported that Stifel analysts thought Azure could exceed a 46% to 48% year-over-year growth consensus. That is an analyst view reported by Kiplinger, not a guaranteed outcome.

Alphabet: Cloud profitability, Search resilience and Gemini
- Google Cloud: Schwab reported 82% year-over-year growth to $24.8 billion in the prior quarter. Investors need to see whether that pace is accompanied by sustainable margins rather than only faster spending.
- Search and advertising: Examine query growth, commercial-search behavior and the effect of AI answers on monetizable clicks.
- Gemini and infrastructure: Look for evidence of paid adoption, enterprise usage, TPU availability, data-center investment and free cash flow after those investments.
Amazon: AWS returns, retail demand and capacity
- AWS AI growth and margins: Schwab reported AWS revenue growth of 37% year over year in the prior quarter. Separate high-margin recurring services from lower-margin infrastructure or one-time effects.
- Capacity and custom chips: Monitor management’s schedule for data centers and custom silicon, plus the cost and timing of bringing capacity online.
- Advertising and retail: Check whether advertising growth and consumer demand are offsetting fulfillment, wage and transportation costs.
Kiplinger reported that Amazon management said capacity would be insufficient in 2026 and 2027 and that demand for 2028 was already striking. That statement describes management’s outlook; it is not an independent demand forecast.
How much do capex, commitments and free cash flow matter?
They determine whether AI growth creates shareholder returns or an expensive obligation. Schwab cited Financial Times data showing roughly $1.5 trillion in purchase commitments across six large technology companies, up from about $1 trillion three months earlier. Commitments can lock companies into servers, power, data-center leases and other capacity even if demand or pricing changes.
Cash figures make the risk concrete: Schwab reported Alphabet second-quarter free cash flow of negative $5.9 billion, Meta free cash flow down 91% year over year to $748 million, and Amazon trailing-12-month free cash flow of negative $7.6 billion. These figures are company-period measures reported by Schwab, not forecasts for the coming quarters. Ask whether management expects cash conversion to improve, and over what period.

Interest expense also matters. Nathan Peterson, director of derivatives research and strategy at the Schwab Center for Financial Research, said, “Higher interest costs are certainly an important factor in profitability.”
What can investors do amid the mixed signals?
Use a written checklist before the releases so an overnight move does not replace a plan.
- Set the time horizon: A long-term owner can focus on multi-year cash returns; a short-term trader must account for after-hours gaps, spreads and implied volatility.
- Record the market’s hurdle: Save the consensus EPS, revenue and growth figures above, then note any revisions before the release.
- Score operating evidence: For each company, record cloud growth, cloud margin, AI paid adoption, capacity constraints and the next-quarter spending guide.
- Check cash and commitments: Compare capital expenditure, purchase commitments, debt and free cash flow with the revenue increase. A revenue beat paired with sharply higher spending may be interpreted negatively.
- Run three scenarios: Strong monetization with controlled capex can support the AI trade; strong revenue with weak cash conversion can trigger a selloff; a rate, oil or Federal Reserve shock can dominate company results.
- Control concentration: Microsoft and Alphabet report the same evening and Amazon the next, creating concentrated event risk. Diversification, position size and a decision not to trade are legitimate choices.
Chris Larkin, managing director at E*TRADE from Morgan Stanley, said, “AI jitters and oil prices have kept stocks off balance, but this week’s lineup of high-profile earnings and economic data may have the potential to push the market out of its trading range — one way or the other.”

Peterson said recent post-earnings reactions had been lackluster and that a surprise in AI monetization or accelerated product adoption could ease spending fears. The practical implication is to judge the quality and cash return of growth, not simply whether reported revenue beats a published estimate.
How should macroeconomic events change the earnings plan?
Keep the Federal Reserve decision, Treasury yields, inflation data and oil in the same scenario sheet as the company figures. A higher-rate outcome can pressure technology valuations even when Azure, Google Cloud or AWS beat expectations. Conversely, a benign rates backdrop may allow investors to reward credible monetization evidence more fully. Because the reports and macro events are tightly clustered, avoid treating a single futures move as a definitive verdict on any one company.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I trade Dow Jones futures before these earnings reports?
Pre-report futures can move on positioning, rates and oil rather than company fundamentals. If you trade, define the maximum loss and account for overnight liquidity, wider spreads and the possibility that futures reverse when the cash market opens.

Why can a company beat EPS and still see its stock fall?
Investors price the next period, not only the quarter that just ended. A beat accompanied by weaker guidance, rising infrastructure costs, lower margins or slower cash conversion can imply a lower future return on invested capital.
What is a useful way to compare Azure, Google Cloud and AWS?
Compare growth and operating margin on the same reporting periods, then examine capacity constraints, pricing, customer concentration and the amount of capital needed for each additional dollar of revenue. Segment definitions differ, so avoid treating the reported percentages as perfectly interchangeable.

Higher crude prices can lift headline inflation and keep interest rates higher for longer, which can compress valuation multiples. They can also raise transportation, power and operating costs across cloud and retail supply chains, although the direct effect varies by company.
