Doug Bowser’s retirement from Nintendo is real, but the headline needs an important correction: he was president and chief operating officer of Nintendo of America, not president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. Nintendo announced his retirement on September 26, 2025, effective December 31, 2025. Devon Pritchard became Nintendo of America’s president on January 1, 2026.
The Switch 2 launched before Bowser’s retirement and delivered exceptionally strong reported sales, but Nintendo did not say that the console’s success caused or motivated his departure.

What happened to Doug Bowser?
Nintendo announced on September 26, 2025, that Bowser would retire from his role as president of Nintendo of America Inc. and from his Nintendo executive-officer position effective December 31, 2025. The company appointed Devon Pritchard as president of Nintendo of America effective January 1, 2026.

Bowser was not Nintendo’s global president
The phrase “Nintendo president” can misleadingly suggest that Bowser led the entire company. Nintendo Co., Ltd., the Japanese parent company, is a separate entity from Nintendo of America Inc., its North American subsidiary.
Bowser was president and COO of Nintendo of America. Shuntaro Furukawa remained president and representative director of Nintendo Co., Ltd. Therefore, Bowser’s retirement was primarily a change in Nintendo’s North American leadership—not a resignation or retirement by Nintendo’s global president.

There is a clear chronology but no confirmed causal explanation. Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, while Bowser was still leading Nintendo of America. Nintendo announced his retirement roughly three months later, and his tenure ended after the holiday period.
However, Nintendo’s announcement did not say that Bowser retired because Switch 2 launched successfully. It also did not describe the retirement as a response to sales, a performance-related departure, or a corporate dispute. The most accurate wording is that Bowser retired after the Switch 2 launch, not that the launch caused his retirement.

How strong was the Switch 2 launch?
Nintendo’s reported sales figures explain why coverage connected Bowser’s departure with the new console:
| Date or period | Reported result |
|---|---|
| June 5, 2025 | Switch 2 launched worldwide. |
| First four days | More than 3.5 million units sold worldwide, according to Nintendo’s launch-sales announcement. |
| Nine months ended December 31, 2025 | 17.37 million hardware units reported in Nintendo’s nine-month results. |
| Fiscal year ended March 31, 2026 | 19.86 million hardware units sold worldwide, according to Nintendo’s sales data. |
Nintendo said the 19.86 million figure exceeded both its initial 15 million-unit forecast and its later 19 million-unit forecast. On that measure, describing the launch as commercially strong is supported by the company’s reported results.

Nintendo’s later financial briefing noted that Japan had a strong holiday period, while results in some overseas markets—particularly Europe and the United States—were weaker than expected during part of the early sales period. The launch was strong by unit-sales measures, but “successful” should not be read as universal approval across every region or category.
Who succeeded Bowser?
Devon Pritchard became president of Nintendo of America on January 1, 2026. Before the appointment, she served as Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of revenue, marketing and consumer experience.
Nintendo also said Pritchard would join the Nintendo of America board and become an executive officer of Nintendo Co., Ltd. Satoru Shibata’s appointment as Nintendo of America CEO added another senior leadership role to the transition.

Bowser’s Nintendo tenure
Bowser joined Nintendo in 2015 and became president and COO of Nintendo of America in 2019, succeeding Reggie Fils-Aimé. His tenure covered the later years of the original Switch era and the North American launch of Switch 2.

What the change means for Nintendo
The documented change is primarily a succession at Nintendo of America. It does not indicate that Nintendo Co., Ltd. changed its global president or that the company adopted a new global strategy.
The timing is notable because Bowser’s retirement followed the launch of Nintendo’s most important new hardware platform in years. Still, the available official information supports a measured conclusion: Nintendo completed a planned North American leadership transition after the launch, while leaving the reason for Bowser’s retirement unspecified.
For investors and industry watchers, the distinction matters. A headline saying “Nintendo president Doug Bowser retires” may imply a change at the parent company. The more precise interpretation is that Nintendo of America moved from Bowser to an internal successor while Nintendo’s global leadership remained unchanged.
Bottom line
Doug Bowser did retire, but from his position as president and COO of Nintendo of America—not as president of Nintendo globally. His retirement took effect on December 31, 2025, and Devon Pritchard succeeded him on January 1, 2026. Switch 2 posted strong reported sales after its June 2025 launch, but Nintendo never stated that the console’s success was the reason Bowser retired.
