Neither store is reliably cheapest for every everyday essential. In a 2025 comparison of 25 items, Dollar General had the lower unit price on 11 items and Dollar Tree on 10. The practical answer depends on the exact product, package size, local shelf price, promotions and whether you need the lowest total at checkout or the best per-ounce or per-count value.
Use the method below to compare the items on your own list. Match products as closely as possible, calculate unit prices, check local stock and then compare the amount you must spend today.

The short answer: compare item by item, not store by store
Dollar Tree and Dollar General both sell overlapping groups of routine goods, including food, paper products, cleaning supplies, household items and personal-care products. That overlap makes a shopping-list comparison possible, but it does not mean every location carries the same brands, sizes or flavors.
The clearest dated comparison available is a May 9, 2025 update from The Krazy Coupon Lady. Across 25 selected items, Dollar General had the lower unit price for 11 items, while Dollar Tree was lower for 10. The remaining items were not a win for either chain under that comparison’s criteria. This was a sample taken at a particular time; it was not a nationwide audit of every product or store.

A separate example shows why a storewide verdict can mislead. In an April 18, 2025 comparison, The Kitchn found that the compared Dollar Tree Columbia dried thin spaghetti came in a 20-ounce box, cost 50 cents less and contained 4 ounces more than the Dollar General Barilla box used in that comparison. Because the brands were different, the result demonstrates the importance of size and product identity rather than proving that all pasta is cheaper at one chain.
For your own trip, the best choice is the retailer that gives you the better combination of:
- unit price for the same or a clearly comparable item;
- package size and the number of uses you actually need;
- total cash required for the quantity you need today;
- current local availability and promotions; and
- acceptable quality when a name-brand item is being compared with a private-label substitute.
What the two chains actually sell
Dollar Tree’s stated categories
Dollar Tree’s 2025 annual report describes consumables such as household paper and chemicals, food, candy, health and personal-care products. Most stores also carry frozen and refrigerated food. Those are broad corporate categories, not a promise that a particular neighborhood store has every item or temperature-controlled section.

Dollar General’s annual report lists packaged food, refrigerated and frozen food, cleaning supplies, paper products, health and beauty care, housewares and hardware, among other categories. Its assortment can differ by store, region and delivery inventory.
Why category overlap is not identical stock
Two stores may both list toilet paper, pasta or toothpaste while carrying different brands, counts or package weights. A shelf may also be temporarily empty, and a product shown in an online listing may not be available at the closest store. Treat the category descriptions as a reason to compare, not as evidence that every item is interchangeable.
Why the shelf sticker can give the wrong answer
Unit price normalizes different package sizes
If one box contains 12 ounces and another contains 20 ounces, comparing only the sticker prices answers “Which package costs less?” It does not answer “Which amount of product costs less?” Calculate a common unit:
- For food and liquids, divide the price by ounces, pounds, milliliters or liters.
- For paper goods, diapers and wipes, divide by sheets, rolls, diapers or wipes when the count is the meaningful measure.
- For individual items, divide by count.
The formula is unit price = shelf price ÷ package quantity. Multiply the result by a common quantity if you want to compare the cost of an equivalent amount.
Package size can change the cash decision
A larger package can have a lower unit price while requiring more money at checkout. If your budget is limited today, the smaller package may fit your cash limit even when it costs more per ounce or per count. Record both figures instead of treating unit price as the only definition of “cheaper.”

Brand matches and substitutes are different comparisons
The strongest comparison uses the same brand, product description and package size. If that is not possible, label the result as a substitute comparison. A private-label product may be an acceptable alternative for one shopper and not for another because of taste, ingredients, durability or skin sensitivity.

The first comparison also identified individual wins such as tissue paper and Crest 3-D White toothpaste. Those examples are useful prompts to check your own list, but prices and package configurations can change after the comparison date.
No current controlled, nationwide study using one fixed basket across both chains was identified. That limitation matters: a dated sample can explain how to compare, but it cannot support a claim that one retailer always wins.
How to run your own fair comparison
1. Start with the list you will actually buy
Write the specific items and quantities needed for the next trip: for example, one pasta, two paper products, a cleaning product and a personal-care item. Do not build a basket around whichever store happens to have a favorable example. A store that is cheaper on an item you do not need does not lower your household’s spending.
2. Define an acceptable match
For each line, record the brand, product type, scent or flavor, size and count you prefer. Mark whether a private-label substitute is acceptable. This prevents a low-priced but unsuitable product from appearing to be a bargain.
3. Record the shelf price and package quantity
Use the current price displayed in the store or the retailer’s current local listing. Write down the exact ounces, pounds, fluid ounces, milliliters, sheets or count. For multipacks, record the number of packages and the quantity in each one.
4. Compute the unit price
Divide price by the relevant quantity and keep the unit consistent between stores. If one listing is priced per package and another per item, convert both to a per-item figure. Round only after calculating, so a small difference is not hidden by premature rounding.

Mark an item unavailable when the local store cannot fulfill it. A low listed price has no value if you must make a second trip or substitute an unwanted product. Online inventory is an indication, not a guarantee, because store counts can change before pickup or delivery.

6. Calculate the amount needed today
If you need three units, multiply each store’s package price by the number of packages required. Include any unavoidable delivery, pickup or service charge when comparing a delivered basket. Keep the per-unit comparison and the checkout total in separate columns.
7. Apply promotions carefully
Write down whether a price requires a digital coupon, a minimum quantity, a membership condition or a limited date. Compare the price you can actually obtain, not a promotion you cannot use. A temporary discount should be labeled as temporary when you save the result for later.

For a quick decision, circle the lower unit price, then separately total the packages required. If the lower-unit-price option exceeds your available cash, note the cash difference rather than calling the smaller package “better value” without qualification.
When each kind of price advantage matters
Choose the lower unit price when consumption is predictable
If you will use the full package and have enough cash, the lower per-ounce or per-count price generally gives you more product for the money. This is most useful for staples you buy repeatedly and can store safely.
Choose the lower checkout total when cash is tight
Households managing immediate spending may reasonably choose the package that meets the need with less money today. Compare the number of packages required and avoid buying a larger pack that creates waste or delays another necessary purchase.
Choose availability when a second trip costs more
Transportation, time and an extra delivery fee are part of the practical cost. If one store has the acceptable product in stock and the other requires a separate trip, include that constraint in your decision even when the shelf-price difference is small.
Choose the acceptable substitute, not merely the cheapest label
For food, personal care and cleaning products, the cheapest item may not perform the same way or meet your household’s requirements. Compare ingredients, concentration, size and intended use before treating a substitute as equivalent.

Using retailer listings and delivery information
Both chains provide ways to check listings, but the displayed price, inventory and delivery terms can change. Verify the store selected in the listing before recording a figure.

Dollar Tree’s 2026 annual report states that Instacart same-day delivery was available from more than 8,400 Dollar Tree stores as of January 31, 2026. The same report notes an Uber Eats partnership announced in August 2025. Those statements provide delivery context; they do not establish that every location is eligible, that delivery fees are the same everywhere or that an online basket has the same price as an in-store basket.
- Select the exact local store or delivery area.
- Check the product’s package size and current price.
- Confirm that the item is available for the fulfillment method you plan to use.
- Add delivery, service and any other unavoidable charges to the checkout comparison.
- Recheck the final basket before payment because inventory and prices can update.
Common comparison mistakes and how to fix them
Using one item to declare a winner
Problem: A cheaper box of pasta or a lower-priced toothpaste is treated as proof that the entire store is cheaper.
Fix: Compare the complete list you need. The 11-to-10 result across 25 items illustrates why one favorable product is not enough.
Ignoring package quantity
Problem: The lower sticker price is selected even though it buys substantially less product.
Fix: Record ounces, counts or sheets and calculate a common unit price.
Mixing brands without saying so
Problem: A name-brand item and a private-label substitute are presented as the same product.
Fix: Label the comparison as a substitute comparison and decide whether performance and ingredients meet your needs.

Using an old online article as today’s price list
Problem: A 2025 figure is assumed to be current in 2026.

Fix: Use dated comparisons to understand the method, then verify current local prices and availability before shopping.
Leaving out the cost of a special trip
Problem: A tiny shelf-price saving is counted while transportation, time or delivery charges are ignored.
Fix: Compare the delivered or trip-adjusted total when the stores are not equally convenient.

Problem: A listing is treated as a guaranteed shelf price or guaranteed stock position.
Fix: Confirm the fulfillment method, local store and final checkout total.
A practical decision rule for a mixed basket
Use this sequence when you are standing between the two options:
- Remove unsuitable products. Eliminate items that fail your brand, ingredient, size or performance requirements.
- Compare unit prices. For each acceptable match, identify the lower per-ounce, per-count or per-sheet cost.
- Calculate the needed quantity. Determine how many packages each store requires for your actual list.
- Check the budget. Select a basket that fits today’s cash limit without buying excess product that may be wasted.
- Check availability and trip cost. Include stock, delivery charges and the cost of an additional trip.
- Record the result. Keep the date and store location with your notes so a future comparison is not mistaken for a current one.
This process can lead to a split trip: one retailer may be cheaper for several items while the other wins on different products. Make two stops only when the expected savings exceed your travel and time costs; otherwise, the convenience of one acceptable basket can be the financially sensible choice.

The available comparisons support an item-level strategy, not a permanent ranking. Dollar General won 11 of 25 unit-price comparisons in the dated sample, and Dollar Tree won 10. The pasta example favored Dollar Tree on both price and package size for the specific products compared, but the brands differed. Company annual reports confirm broad category overlap while also leaving room for store-level assortment differences.
Therefore, the defensible answer to “Which is cheaper?” is: neither chain is demonstrably cheapest for every everyday essential. Compare the exact items, normalize package sizes, verify local conditions and separate unit value from the amount you must spend today.
