No. The IRS says it never asks for or accepts gift cards as payment, and it identifies an unsolicited demand for immediate payment by gift card, wire transfer or cryptocurrency as a scam warning sign. The important exception is procedural, not a loophole: a taxpayer who has verified a real balance may choose an official IRS payment channel, including same-day wire. A caller’s demand to wire money does not become legitimate merely because same-day wire appears on the IRS payment options.
Cryptocurrency is not listed as an IRS payment method. “Digital wallet” on the IRS payments page refers to a listed electronic payment option, not a crypto wallet. If someone contacts you unexpectedly, creates urgency, or tells you to use an instrument they control, stop and verify the balance through IRS.gov and official IRS contact information.

What the IRS actually says
The IRS’s tax-scam guidance uses an absolute formulation: “We never ask for or accept gift cards as payment.” IRS Tax Tip 2025-06, published January 17, 2025, repeats that people should remember the IRS never asks for or accepts gift cards for a tax bill.

The same guidance treats requests for payment by wire transfer or cryptocurrency as scam indicators when they arrive as an unexpected demand. That warning concerns how the request reaches you and who controls the transaction. It does not mean every wire transfer involving a tax payment is fraudulent.

The key distinction: who starts the payment
| Situation | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| You sign in through IRS.gov, confirm a notice or balance, and select an available payment option. | You are choosing an official channel to resolve a verified obligation. | Follow the payment instructions shown on the official IRS service and retain the confirmation. |
| An unsolicited caller, text, email or social-media message tells you to pay immediately by gift card, cryptocurrency or a wire to supplied account details. | This matches the IRS’s scam warnings, regardless of caller ID, logos or threats. | End the contact, do not send money or codes, and verify independently. |
A legitimate payment page cannot authenticate a suspicious caller. A scammer can tell you to use a real IRS method while directing you to a fraudulent account, or can demand an instrument the IRS does not accept at all.
Which payment methods the IRS lists
The IRS payments page lists six broad channels. Availability depends on the type of tax being paid, so the presence of a method on the general page does not guarantee that it is available for your specific payment.
| Method | Availability described by the IRS | Fees and cautions |
|---|---|---|
| Bank-account payment | Listed as available for all tax payments. | Use the official IRS payment flow and verify the destination before authorizing. |
| Debit or credit card | Listed for most tax payments. | Fees apply. The IRS does not ask you to read card numbers or security codes to an unexpected caller. |
| Digital wallet | Listed for most tax payments. | Fees apply. The label does not mean cryptocurrency; crypto is not listed as an accepted IRS payment method. |
| Same-day wire | Listed as available for all tax payments. | Fees may apply. It is legitimate when you, after verification, initiate the payment through the IRS’s stated process; it does not validate a caller’s demand. |
| Check or money order | Listed as available for all tax payments. | Use the payee and mailing or delivery instructions from an official notice or IRS service. |
| Cash | Listed as available for all tax payments. | Follow the IRS’s official cash-payment instructions; do not hand cash to a person who arrives or calls unexpectedly. |
The IRS notes that debit or credit card and digital-wallet payments can carry fees, and same-day wire may also involve a fee. The safest way to determine what applies is to start from IRS.gov or the official notice you already possess, rather than from a link, phone number or account number supplied in a new message.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy gift-card demands are an immediate stop sign
Gift cards are designed for purchases, not government tax remittances. When a fraudster tells you to buy cards, stay on the phone, and read the card numbers or PINs, the value can be drained as soon as the codes are disclosed. The IRS will not convert a gift card into a tax credit, refund, penalty payment or settlement.

Typical script and the manipulation behind it
- The contact claims you owe an exact amount and must pay within minutes to avoid arrest, deportation, license loss or a lawsuit.
- You are instructed to buy particular cards at a retail store, sometimes at multiple locations.
- The caller demands the card numbers, PINs, photographs or receipts, or tells you not to tell anyone.
- The caller may remain connected while you shop and may spoof an agency number or use official-looking documents.
None of those details changes the payment rule. Do not provide gift-card numbers or PINs, personal information, account credentials or copies of identification in response to the demand.
How to understand the wire-transfer warning
Wire transfers need a more precise explanation because same-day wire is a real IRS option. The fraud signal is an unsolicited, urgent instruction to wire money to an account or intermediary selected by the contact. The legitimate scenario is different: you independently confirm the tax balance and then choose same-day wire from the official IRS payment instructions.
Questions that separate the two situations
- Did you already receive and verify an IRS notice? The IRS generally mails a bill first when it believes you owe. An unexpected demand with no verifiable notice requires independent checking.
- Did you navigate to the payment service yourself? Typing IRS.gov into your browser or using a known official account is safer than clicking a message link or dialing a number in the message.
- Does the destination belong to the process described by the official instructions? A caller’s personal, business or third-party account is not validated by the word “wire.”
- Are you being denied time to question the amount? IRS guidance does not describe a process in which a person must pay instantly without an opportunity to review or challenge the liability.
If the only reason you are considering a wire is that a caller says your case will close today, do not send it. End the conversation and verify the notice and balance through official channels.
Cryptocurrency is not the IRS “digital wallet” option
The IRS lists digital wallet among the methods available for most tax payments, but its payment page does not list cryptocurrency. A digital wallet in that context is an electronic payment service supported by the IRS payment process; it is not permission to send Bitcoin, Ether or another token to a wallet address.

Crypto transfers are especially dangerous in an impersonation scheme because they are generally difficult to reverse once sent. The IRS’s scam guidance specifically flags a demand for cryptocurrency as a warning sign. Do not scan a QR code, connect an exchange account, or send a transaction hash to a person claiming to be an IRS agent.
How legitimate IRS collection normally starts
The IRS generally mails a bill to taxpayers it believes owe money. That notice identifies the tax period, amount and response options. A notice is not automatically correct, but it gives you a way to review the calculation, ask questions and use the appeal or dispute process that applies to your case.
This does not mean every later IRS contact is fake or that the agency can never call. It means an unexpected message demanding an immediate, irreversible payment should not replace verification of the underlying notice. An impersonator may know your name, address or partial tax information; those details are not proof of identity.
What to do when a demand arrives
- Stop the transaction. Do not buy a gift card, send crypto, initiate a wire, or click a payment link supplied by the contact. If you are on a call, hang up.
- Protect information. Do not disclose card numbers, gift-card numbers or PINs, bank credentials, passwords, one-time codes, Social Security numbers or other personal information.
- Find the underlying record independently. Type IRS.gov into your browser or use an official IRS account or notice already in your possession. Do not use the phone number, email address, web address or QR code in the suspicious communication.
- Check the amount and tax period. Compare the notice with your account information and tax records. If the balance is real, use only the payment methods and instructions shown in the official IRS process.
- Get help for uncertainty. If you cannot determine whether a notice is genuine or how to dispute it, contact the IRS through a channel published on IRS.gov or consult a qualified tax professional. Do not let a caller choose the adviser or payment destination for you.
- Preserve evidence. Keep messages, email headers, caller numbers, receipts, card packaging, wallet addresses, transaction IDs and dates. Do not continue communicating merely to gather more information.
If you already paid or shared information
Gift card
Contact the gift-card issuer immediately using the number on its official website or the card packaging, explain that the card was used in a scam, and ask whether the balance can be frozen or refunded. Keep the card and receipt. Do not send additional cards to “recover” the first payment.

Where to report an impersonation
For suspected phone impersonation of the IRS, the IRS directs taxpayers to report the incident to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) through its IRS impersonation-scam reporting channel. The IRS gift-card guidance also identifies the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as a reporting channel for phone scams.

For suspicious emails or text messages, use the current reporting instructions on IRS.gov rather than replying, forwarding sensitive data or clicking embedded links. Reporting does not substitute for contacting your bank, card issuer or exchange when money has already moved.
How widespread are gift-card phishing attempts?
An IRS Tax Tip dated November 25, 2025, said the agency’s [email protected] inbox had received more than 1,000 gift-card phishing emails since 2019, averaging about 200 per year. That is an inbox count reported by the IRS, not a count of all gift-card scams, all IRS impersonation attempts or scams occurring in a particular year. It illustrates why a message that looks polished or uses tax terminology still requires independent verification.
Common situations and the correct response
| What you hear or see | Assessment | Immediate response |
|---|---|---|
| “Buy gift cards and read me the PINs.” | Incompatible with IRS payment rules. | End contact; do not buy or disclose codes; report it. |
| “Send cryptocurrency to this wallet before the end of the day.” | Crypto is not listed as an IRS payment method; urgency is a scam indicator. | Do not transfer funds; verify through IRS.gov. |
| “Wire the balance to this account now.” | An unsolicited demand is suspicious even though same-day wire exists as an official option. | Verify the notice and destination independently before considering any payment. |
| You see same-day wire after signing in through an official IRS payment service. | A legitimate taxpayer-selected option, subject to the payment type and any fee. | Follow the official instructions and save confirmation details. |
| You receive a notice you do not understand but no demand for unusual payment. | The notice may require action, but its amount and response options should be reviewed. | Use the notice and IRS.gov to verify, question or dispute the liability. |
Bottom line
The IRS does not accept gift cards and does not list cryptocurrency as a payment method. A sudden demand to use either, or to wire money immediately, is a strong impersonation warning. Same-day wire is real only as an official channel that you choose after verifying a tax obligation; it is never proof that an unsolicited caller is genuine. Verify through IRS.gov, protect your information, and report suspected impersonation to TIGTA and the other channels identified by the IRS.
