Does Switching Banks Affect Your Credit Score or Borrowing Power?

Usually, no. Moving your checking or savings account to another bank is not itself a credit event. Traditional credit reports generally do not list checking-account openings, closures, balances, or check-writing history, so changing deposit banks normally does not change your credit score.

The move can still create problems indirectly. An unpaid negative balance at the old bank could be sent to collections, and an automatic loan or credit-card payment could fail if you do not update its funding account. Either event can affect your credit. A lender’s credit inquiry occurs because you applied for credit, not because you opened a new checking account.

What changes when you switch banks?

A typical switch involves closing one checking or savings account and opening another. Those are deposit accounts, not borrowing accounts. The major credit reporting companies—Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion—typically do not include checking-account or check-writing history in a traditional credit report. Consequently, the account opening, closure, and transfer of your cash do not normally add or subtract credit-score points.

This answer is limited to ordinary checking and savings accounts. A credit card, personal loan, auto loan, overdraft line, or home-equity product issued by the same bank is a separate credit account with its own reporting and payment rules. Closing or opening one of those products can have consequences that are unrelated to changing your deposit bank.

Two reporting systems are involved

People often assume every bank record feeds the same credit file. In practice, deposit-account screening and credit reporting are different systems.

Question Traditional credit report and score Checking-account specialty report
What is assessed? Credit obligations, payment history, balances, and other information used in lending decisions Deposit-account history, such as unpaid overdrafts, involuntary closures, or suspected fraud
What can switching do by itself? Usually nothing directly A new bank may screen your application using prior account history
Main risk in a bank move A collection reported from an unpaid balance or a missed credit payment Negative information that makes a bank decline a new checking account or offer a restricted account
Who makes the final decision? A lender applies its underwriting criteria after reviewing credit information A specialty reporting company supplies data; each bank or credit union sets its own account-opening policy

Companies such as ChexSystems and Early Warning Services maintain checking-account consumer reports that banks and credit unions may consult. These reports are not credit scores. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains that a person can have a strong credit score and an unfavorable checking-account report. Being denied a checking account therefore does not mean you have been denied a loan, and it does not prove that your traditional credit score fell.

How a bank switch can affect your credit indirectly

An unpaid negative balance can become a collection

If the old account closes with an overdraft, monthly fee, or other negative balance, the bank may try to collect it or refer or sell it to a debt collector. The negative balance itself is not automatically a credit-report entry. The credit risk arises if a collector reports the resulting debt to a major credit bureau. A reported collection can appear on your credit report and influence your score and later credit decisions.

That chain is conditional: an overdraft does not automatically lower a score, and an account closure does not automatically create a collection. Paying or settling the amount with the old bank, keeping written confirmation, and checking that the account shows a zero balance reduce the chance that an unresolved debt will follow you.

An automatic payment can fail during the move

Loan and credit-card payments may continue to draw from the old account after you open a new one. If that account is closed or lacks enough money, the payment can be returned. A late payment on the loan or card is a separate credit event caused by the failed payment, not by the act of switching banks. Once a creditor reports a missed payment, it can affect your credit history and your ability to qualify for credit.

Update the payment account with each lender or card issuer, not just with the new bank. Confirm the first debit from the new account and keep enough money in both accounts while transactions are in transit.

A credit application creates its own inquiry

When you apply for a mortgage, auto loan, personal loan, or new credit card, the lender commonly obtains a credit report. That application inquiry may be a hard inquiry. It is the credit application—not the opening of a checking account—that prompts the inquiry. Reviews of an existing account are generally soft inquiries and do not have the same effect on a score.

Does switching banks change your borrowing power?

For most borrowers, changing where your deposits are held does not by itself change the credit information a lender uses. Your borrowing power can still change if the move results in a reported collection, a missed loan or card payment, or a separate application for new credit.

There is no universal rule that every lender must ignore your deposit relationship. Individual lenders may have their own policies about account balances, cash reserves, relationship pricing, or whether you keep deposits with them. The available consumer guidance does not establish a single industry rule for those practices. If you are applying for a particular mortgage or other loan, ask that lender how it treats deposit balances and relationship discounts under its current underwriting terms.

Keep the concepts separate:

  • Credit score: a score calculated from information in a traditional credit report.
  • Checking-account eligibility: a bank’s decision based partly on specialty account-screening information.
  • Borrowing power: a lender’s decision based on credit, income, debts, assets, loan terms, and its own policies.

A safe, step-by-step bank-switching sequence

Use a staged move rather than closing the old account immediately. The goal is to prevent a collection and make sure every credit payment continues on time.

  1. Resolve the old account’s balance. Review the final ledger for overdrafts, returned-payment fees, and monthly charges. Pay or settle any amount owed and request written confirmation of the resolution. Keep the confirmation with your bank records.
  2. Open and fund the new account. Deposit enough money to cover the first cycle of bills and any minimum-balance requirement. Do not assume a transfer is complete until the money is available for withdrawal.
  3. Move direct deposit. Give your employer, benefits administrator, or other payer the new routing and account numbers. Verify the first deposit arrives before relying on the new account for every bill.
  4. Redirect recurring withdrawals. Change the payment account with your mortgage servicer, student-loan servicer, auto lender, credit-card issuers, utilities, insurance companies, subscriptions, and any other recurring merchant. Save confirmation numbers or screenshots.
  5. Track pending activity. Review recent checks, debit-card transactions, electronic transfers, and scheduled bills. Leave enough money in the old account to cover items that have not posted yet. Experian’s bank-switching guidance recommends waiting until checks have cleared and deposits and automatic payments have been rerouted before closing the old account.
  6. Monitor the first transactions. Compare the new account statement with your list of expected deposits and withdrawals. Check that each loan and credit-card payment was credited by its due date. Correct a failed transfer immediately and ask the creditor whether a payment can be reprocessed.
  7. Close the old account deliberately. Once outstanding transactions have cleared and the balance is zero, follow the bank’s closure procedure. Obtain a closure confirmation and retain statements in case a later fee or collection notice appears.

What to do if a new bank denies your account

A denial for a checking account is usually an account-screening issue, not evidence that your credit score is low. The bank should provide an adverse-action notice identifying the consumer reporting company whose information contributed to the decision, along with contact information for that company.

  1. Read the notice and identify the reporting company named.
  2. Request your checking-account consumer report from that company.
  3. Look for an unpaid overdraft, an involuntary closure, suspected fraud, or an account that does not belong to you.
  4. Dispute inaccurate information with the reporting company and with the bank or other source that supplied it. Include documents such as payment receipts, account statements, and an identity-theft report when relevant.
  5. Ask the bank to reconsider after the record is corrected, or seek an account at an institution whose policy permits applicants with the documented history.

The CFPB’s guidance on obtaining checking-account consumer reports, last reviewed September 5, 2025, describes the right to request the report and dispute inaccurate information. Keep copies of every dispute and response.

Common situations and the correct interpretation

“My bank closed my checking account. Did my score drop?”

Not merely because the account was closed. The important questions are whether a balance remained unpaid and whether a collector later reported it. Check both your traditional credit reports and any account-screening report referenced in a denial notice.

“I was denied a new checking account. Does that mean I cannot get a loan?”

No. The bank may have relied on ChexSystems, Early Warning Services, or another specialty report. That decision uses different information from a lender’s credit-score review. A loan application will be evaluated separately using the lender’s credit, income, debt, and other requirements.

“Can moving my direct deposit hurt my credit?”

Changing where your paycheck is deposited is not a credit event. The risk is operational: if a loan or card payment still pulls from the old account and fails, the resulting late payment can matter. Confirm each change before the next due date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Will opening a bank account cause a hard inquiry?”

A routine deposit-account opening is not the same as applying for a loan. A lender can obtain your credit report when you apply for credit, and that application inquiry may be hard. Ask the bank what screening it performs if you are concerned about a particular account-opening process.

Questions to check before and after the switch

  • Is the old account’s balance exactly zero, including pending fees?
  • Do you have written proof of any payment or settlement?
  • Has your first paycheck or benefit payment reached the new account?
  • Have every loan and credit-card autopay instructions been changed?
  • Did the first payment from the new account post successfully?
  • Have all checks, transfers, and automatic debits from the old account cleared?
  • Did you retain the old account’s final statement and closure confirmation?
  • If an account was denied, did you request and review the named specialty report?

The practical answer

Switching an ordinary checking or savings account normally leaves your traditional credit score unchanged. Protect your borrowing prospects by treating the move as a payment-continuity project: clear the old balance, reroute every credit payment, verify the first transactions, and close the old account only after pending activity is finished. Any collection, missed payment, or credit application that occurs during the process is a separate event with its own consequences.
