The IRS treats net earnings from self-employment as earned income for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). A freelancer, contractor, sole proprietor or other self-employed taxpayer can qualify, but self-employment income alone does not guarantee the credit. You must also pass the EITC rules for your filing status, adjusted gross income (AGI), Social Security number, residence, investment income, age and qualifying children for the tax year.
For 2025 returns, the income ceilings range from $19,104 for a taxpayer with no qualifying child who files single or under another non-joint status to $68,675 for a married couple filing jointly with at least three qualifying children. The maximum 2025 credit ranges from $649 with no qualifying children to $8,046 with three or more.

What self-employment income counts for EITC?
The IRS uses your net self-employment earnings, not your business’s gross receipts. Net earnings are the amount left after allowable ordinary and necessary business expenses are accounted for under the self-employment rules. Publication 596 (2025) describes “net earnings from self-employment” as earned income for EITC purposes.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a sole proprietor or single-member business, the figures generally begin with Schedule C (Form 1040). If you receive $30,000 in business receipts and have $8,000 of allowable expenses, the starting net amount is $22,000, subject to the self-employment tax and EITC worksheets. That example illustrates the method only; your deductible expenses, depreciation, business-use adjustments and other items can change the actual amount.

Gross receipts are not the EITC figure
Leaving out legitimate business expenses can overstate earned income and AGI, while claiming personal or unsupported costs can create an inaccurate return. Publication 596 instructs self-employed filers to claim allowable business expenses when figuring net earnings. Keep receipts, invoices, mileage records, payment statements and other documentation that support both income and expenses.
When Schedule SE is generally required
If your net self-employment earnings are $400 or more, you generally must complete Schedule SE (Form 1040) and pay self-employment tax. Schedule SE also feeds information into the EITC calculation. The exact result depends on the current-year instructions and your other income and deductions.
2025 EITC income limits and maximum credits
For tax year 2025, both AGI and earned-income ceilings apply. The limits below are the IRS amounts for the listed number of qualifying children. “Single/other status” covers the non-joint filing-status column shown by the IRS; married taxpayers filing jointly use the separate joint column.

| Two | $57,310 | $64,430 | $7,152 |
| Three or more | $61,555 | $68,675 | $8,046 |
These are tax-year-specific 2025 amounts, not universal thresholds for every filing season. The credit phases in and out, so earning below a ceiling does not mean you automatically receive the maximum. Your final credit also depends on filing status, earned income, AGI and the number of qualifying children.
Investment-income ceiling
Your investment income must be $11,950 or less for 2025. Interest, dividends, capital-gain income, rents and royalties can matter under the investment-income rules even when your business income is otherwise eligible. Check the current Form 1040 instructions and Publication 596 for what is included and how it is measured.
How the IRS calculates self-employed earned income for EITC
Self-employed filers do not simply copy a Schedule C line into the EITC section. Publication 596 says that a person who is self-employed, a statutory employee, or a member of the clergy or church employee who files Schedule SE figures earned income using the worksheet in Step 5 of the Form 1040 instructions for line 27a, then completes Part 4 of EIC Worksheet B in those instructions.

- Report the business activity. Complete Schedule C (or the applicable business schedule) with gross receipts and allowable expenses.
- Determine net earnings. Apply the self-employment calculation, including the deduction for the employer-equivalent portion of self-employment tax where the Form 1040 instructions require it.
- Complete Schedule SE when required. Net earnings of $400 or more generally trigger Schedule SE and self-employment tax.
- Use Form 1040 Step 5. Enter the amounts requested in the line 27a worksheet to determine the earned-income figure used for EITC.
- Complete EIC Worksheet B. Follow Part 4 and any other applicable parts to calculate the credit from your earned income, AGI, filing status and qualifying-child information.
Optional Schedule SE methods
The 2025 Schedule SE instructions state that optional methods may allow a taxpayer to claim the EITC or receive a larger credit when net earnings calculated without those methods are below $7,240. This is a fact-specific election, not an automatic increase. Read the current Schedule SE instructions before choosing an optional method, because the election can affect self-employment tax and other parts of the return.

When both spouses are self-employed
On a joint return, each spouse’s business and self-employment-tax information can affect the EITC computation. Publication 596 calls for special handling in EIC Worksheet B, including completing the relevant worksheet parts when one spouse files Schedule SE and the other does not. Do not combine the businesses into one figure or assume that one spouse’s Schedule SE status applies to both.
Other EITC eligibility tests still apply
Having qualifying net earnings is only one requirement. Publication 596 and the 2025 IRS EITC guidance also require the following checks.

- Valid Social Security number: You, your spouse on a joint return and each qualifying child generally need a valid SSN by the return’s due date, subject to the detailed exceptions in the current instructions.
- Citizenship or residency: You must be a U.S. citizen or resident alien for the year. There is a limited married-filing-jointly exception for certain nonresident aliens; follow Publication 596 rather than assuming an immigration status qualifies.
- No Form 2555: Filing Form 2555 for the foreign earned income exclusion generally prevents claiming the EITC for that year.
- Correct filing status: The EITC has specific filing-status rules. Married taxpayers generally need to use the status permitted by the current EITC instructions; filing separately can disqualify a claim in many situations.
- Investment income at or below the limit: For 2025, the ceiling is $11,950.
- Qualifying-child rules: A child must meet the relationship, age, residency and joint-return tests, and only one taxpayer can generally claim the same child for EITC.
- Childless-worker rules: If you have no qualifying child, you generally must be at least 25 and under 65 at the end of the year and cannot be another person’s dependent or qualifying child.
- Prior EITC disallowance: If the IRS previously denied or reduced your EITC, you may need Form 8862 before claiming it again. Use the current Publication 596 instructions to determine whether an exception applies.
A step-by-step filing checklist for a self-employed EITC claim
- Separate business and personal records. Total your business receipts and identify expenses that are allowable under the business rules. Retain documentation in case the IRS asks how you calculated net earnings.
- Prepare Schedule C or the appropriate business form. Reconcile the schedule to your bank deposits, payment-platform records, invoices and 1099 forms. A 1099 amount is not automatically your taxable profit; expenses still matter.
- Run the self-employment tax calculation. Complete Schedule SE if your net earnings generally reach $400 or more. Review whether an optional method is relevant when the amount calculated without it is below $7,240.
- Complete Form 1040 Step 5 for line 27a. Use the current year’s worksheet exactly as written. This is the bridge between self-employment calculations and the EITC earned-income amount.
- Complete EIC Worksheet B. Enter each spouse’s information separately when filing jointly, and complete Part 4 and any other applicable sections.
- Verify the eligibility tests. Check the 2025 ceiling for your filing status and number of qualifying children, the $11,950 investment-income limit, SSN requirements, age and dependency rules, and any Form 2555 or Form 8862 issue.
- Compare the result with the correct tax year. Do not use a prior-year calculator or worksheet. Thresholds, maximum credits and form lines can change annually.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Using gross business revenue as earned income
This can push a taxpayer over an income ceiling or produce the wrong credit. Recalculate from documented receipts minus allowable expenses, then follow the Form 1040 and EIC worksheets.
Omitting Schedule SE when it is required
A self-employed taxpayer with net earnings of at least $400 generally has a Schedule SE obligation. Leaving it out can understate self-employment tax and disrupt the EITC computation. File an amended return or follow IRS correction procedures if the omission has already occurred.
Relying on a generic EITC calculator
Many calculators do not handle Schedule C expenses, Schedule SE optional methods, two self-employed spouses or Form 8862. Use a tool or preparer that supports Form 1040, Schedule C, Schedule SE and EIC Worksheet B for the exact tax year.

Claiming a child who does not meet every test
Check relationship, age, residency and joint-return requirements rather than relying on the child’s age alone. If another taxpayer also claims the child, the IRS tie-breaker rules can affect both returns.
Ignoring a prior disallowance
A previous denial can require Form 8862 or additional documentation. Answer the prior-year EITC questions in the current instructions before submitting a new claim.
Choosing how to prepare the return
The right preparation method depends on the complexity of the business and family situation. Whichever route you choose, verify that it supports the current tax year and the forms below.

What the 2025 numbers mean in practice
Consider two simplified illustrations. A single taxpayer with no qualifying child and $18,500 of AGI may be under the $19,104 ceiling, but still must satisfy the age, dependency, SSN, investment-income and other rules; the credit is not automatically $649. A married couple filing jointly with two qualifying children and $60,000 of AGI is below the $64,430 ceiling for that category, but the final credit depends on the earned-income calculation and phaseout formula. These examples do not determine eligibility or the amount due.
The maximum figures are limits, not flat payments: $649 with no qualifying children, $4,328 with one, $7,152 with two and $8,046 with three or more. The IRS calculation can produce a smaller credit or no credit when income, filing status or another eligibility test falls outside the permitted range.
Bottom line for self-employed taxpayers
Self-employment income can qualify for the EITC when it is calculated as net earnings and all other requirements are met. Start with accurate business records and Schedule C, complete Schedule SE when required, use Form 1040 Step 5 and EIC Worksheet B, and verify every 2025 threshold and eligibility test before filing. If both spouses have self-employment income or a prior EITC claim was denied, follow the special worksheet and Form 8862 instructions rather than relying on a simplified calculation.
