Does Financial Confidence Cause Greater Wealth, or Does Wealth Build Confidence?

Short answer: The stronger evidence points from demonstrable financial knowledge toward better wealth outcomes, not from confidence alone toward greater wealth. Confidence can influence whether someone engages with investing, saving, or other financial decisions, but feeling capable is not the same as understanding interest, risk, debt, fees, or diversification. Existing studies also do not cleanly establish that accumulated wealth later causes higher confidence. The most defensible conclusion is that calibrated confidence—confidence matched to actual knowledge—can help a person use financial skills, while confidence without skills can mislead.

Financial confidence and financial literacy measure different things

Objective financial literacy

Financial literacy is an assessment of what a person can understand or apply. Depending on the study, questions may test concepts such as compound interest, inflation, risk, borrowing, or investment diversification. A literacy score is therefore an attempt to measure capability, even when the person is uncertain about an answer.

Perceived knowledge and confidence

Financial confidence is a self-assessment: how capable or knowledgeable someone believes they are. Researchers also use terms such as perceived financial knowledge and financial self-efficacy. A confident person may know a great deal, know very little, or have a mixture of strong and weak knowledge. Confidence can be useful when it encourages someone to open a pension account, compare a loan, or review a budget, but it does not verify that the decision is sound.

Calibration matters more than a high confidence score

Calibration means that certainty rises when knowledge is reliable and falls when a person is guessing. Underconfidence can cause someone to avoid a beneficial decision, while overconfidence can produce excessive trading, concentration in one asset, or acceptance of expensive debt. The research distinguishes confidence from overconfidence: a person can feel sure and still be wrong.

The clearest wealth evidence favors financial literacy

Instrumental-variable evidence from the United States

Behrman, Mitchell, Soo, and Bravo’s 2012 American Economic Review study used an instrumental-variables approach to estimate whether financial literacy affects household wealth rather than merely appearing alongside it. Their estimates indicated that financial literacy raises wealth accumulation, and the estimated effects were larger than ordinary regression associations.

The paper gives a concrete, study-specific illustration: a 0.2 standard-deviation increase in its PRIDIT financial-literacy score was estimated to correspond to about $13,800 more average net wealth in the study sample and model. The authors attributed approximately $5,200 of that amount to pension wealth, $1,600 to net housing wealth, and $6,900 to other wealth. These are not current-dollar guarantees, an individual forecast, or a universal return on taking a financial-literacy course. They are the authors’ estimate for their data, measurement and identification strategy.

Instrumental-variables results depend on whether the chosen instruments satisfy the assumptions needed to isolate literacy. The estimate is therefore stronger evidence of a possible causal pathway than a simple correlation, but it is not proof that every increase in test performance will produce the same dollar gain for every household.

Six-year predictive evidence

Angrisani, Burke, Lusardi, and Mottola followed U.S. respondents from 2012 to 2018. Their longitudinal analysis found that financial literacy predicted later financial outcomes after accounting for baseline outcomes and a broad set of personal characteristics. Following people over time helps establish temporal order—literacy is measured before the later outcome—but the design is not a randomized assignment. Some relationships can therefore still reflect unmeasured differences between people.

What the confidence findings actually show

German household data: a smaller and uneven association

Bannier and Schwarz analyzed German SAVE household-panel data and reported a positive influence of financial literacy on financial wealth. In their model, the effect associated with confidence was smaller than the literacy effect. Their results also differed by gender: men’s wealth rose with confidence in the reported specification, while little confidence effect was reported for women. Education moderated some literacy results.

This is a population- and model-specific pattern, not a rule that confidence matters for men but never for women. It does show why a single survey correlation cannot answer the causal question for everyone: the relationship can change with gender, education, existing wealth and how confidence is measured.

Evidence from Japan

A Japanese survey study likewise reported positive wealth effects for financial literacy and identified behavioral traits, including overconfidence, as relevant determinants. Its summary does not support the simple claim that more confidence automatically creates more wealth. Overconfidence is especially important because it can encourage decisions that feel decisive but are poorly informed.

Investment participation is an intermediate step, not a wealth verdict

What the Federal Reserve analysis found

Cupák and co-authors’ 2020 Federal Reserve analysis of U.S. Survey of Consumer Finances data linked both objective financial literacy and confidence in financial skills to the probability that a household held risky assets and bonds. The strength of those relationships varied with wealth and socioeconomic characteristics.

Holding an asset is only one point in a much longer chain. A household’s eventual net worth also depends on contributions, income, saving rates, fees, taxes, investment returns, risk exposure, debt, withdrawals and the time horizon. Participation can therefore be evidence of engagement without proving that confidence produced higher returns or a larger balance.

Evidence Population and design Outcome measured What it can support What it cannot establish
Behrman, Mitchell, Soo and Bravo (2012) Household data; instrumental variables Estimated net-wealth accumulation A positive literacy-to-wealth causal estimate under the study’s assumptions A guaranteed dollar gain for an individual or proof that confidence alone caused it
Angrisani, Burke, Lusardi and Mottola (2012–2018) U.S. longitudinal sample Later financial outcomes Financial literacy has predictive relevance over time That every association is a randomized causal effect
Bannier and Schwarz (2018) German SAVE household panel Financial wealth and confidence/literacy measures Literacy is more strongly related to wealth than confidence in their model; subgroup differences matter A universal gender pattern or a settled direction of causality
Cupák and co-authors (2020) U.S. Survey of Consumer Finances Ownership of risky assets and bonds Literacy and confidence are associated with investment participation Higher net worth, superior returns or suitable risk-taking
Lleó-Bono, Lee, Rauh and Tipoe (2025) Nearly 3,000 U.S. adults; preregistered online experiment Test responses and an incentivized investment task Confidence-awareness feedback can change short-run choices Long-term household wealth accumulation
Morris and co-authors (2025) 1,119 young Canadian women; intervention study Confidence, management behaviors and savings A short-lived increase in reported confidence and links with behaviors Durable wealth gains or effects in all populations

Experiments show that confidence can change behavior—briefly

The 2025 confidence-awareness experiment

Lleó-Bono, Lee, Rauh, and Tipoe reported a preregistered online experiment with nearly 3,000 U.S. adults. Participants received personalized feedback about implicit confidence, together with an explanation of how confidence relates to financial abilities. The intervention reduced “don’t know” responses and improved performance in an incentivized investment task. The effects persisted in a two-week follow-up.

This is useful evidence that awareness of one’s confidence calibration can affect immediate answers and choices. It does not measure years of saving, investment fees, market returns, debt repayment or household net worth. A better task decision over two weeks is not the same outcome as durable wealth accumulation.

The Canadian women’s intervention

Morris and co-authors studied 1,119 young Canadian women. They reported that confidence ratings were about 6% higher immediately after the intervention and remained about 6% higher one week later. By one month, the difference was no longer statistically significant. The authors also reported that confidence was linked to better financial-management behaviors and more savings, but the intervention result itself did not establish lasting wealth gains.

“Directly after the interventions, financial confidence ratings from women assigned to either or both of the intervention conditions were about 6% higher than ratings in a control condition.”

The time pattern matters: an intervention can move a self-rating quickly without demonstrating that the change persists long enough to alter net worth.

Does wealth build confidence?

People with more assets, higher income or successful investing may have more opportunities to practice financial decisions and receive reassuring feedback. That makes a reverse pathway plausible, but the studies summarized here do not isolate it adequately. Wealth and confidence can be measured at the same time, or confidence can be observed before a later behavior, without proving that wealth itself caused the confidence change.

Van Rooij and co-authors’ Fearless Woman article, published online on December 18, 2024, estimated that confidence accounts for about 30% of the gender difference in measured financial literacy and found that knowledge and confidence were both linked to stock-market participation. The 30% figure is a decomposition of a measured literacy gap; it is not the claim that confidence creates 30% of a gender wealth gap. Nor does stock-market participation reveal whether wealth later increased.

To establish that wealth builds confidence, researchers would need repeated measures of wealth and confidence, credible controls for prior knowledge and life circumstances, and designs capable of separating wealth’s effect from the effect of education, income, market experience and personality. The available findings do not yet provide that clean test.

A practical way to use confidence without letting it mislead you

The evidence supports treating confidence as a prompt to check and act, not as proof that a decision is correct. The following process keeps the useful part of confidence while testing the underlying skill.

  1. State the decision in concrete terms. Write down whether you are choosing a loan, changing a savings rate, selecting an investment allocation or evaluating insurance. Vague confidence is difficult to verify.
  2. List the concepts the decision requires. For a loan, identify the annual interest rate, total repayment, fees and variable-rate risk. For an investment, identify diversification, costs, volatility, tax treatment and the time horizon.
  3. Separate what you know from what you assume. Mark each answer as known, checked or guessed. A high confidence rating attached to several guesses is a warning sign, not reassurance.
  4. Use an independent check for material decisions. Recalculate totals, read the fee schedule, compare the risk disclosure and test whether the decision still works under a lower return or higher payment. The goal is calibration, not eliminating all uncertainty.
  5. Match risk to capacity and time. Investment participation is not automatically beneficial. Keep near-term spending needs, emergency reserves, debt obligations and the possibility of loss in view before acting.
  6. Recheck after experience, not after every outcome. A gain does not prove that the decision was well informed, and a loss does not prove the opposite. Review the assumptions and process rather than allowing one market result to inflate or destroy confidence.

How to read claims about confidence and wealth

  • Ask what was measured: a literacy score, a confidence rating, an investment decision, savings, or total net worth.
  • Check the design: an instrumental-variable estimate and a randomized intervention answer different questions from a cross-sectional correlation.
  • Look at the follow-up period: immediate responses, one week, one month and two weeks cannot stand in for decades of accumulation.
  • Keep the population attached: German households, U.S. adults and households, and young Canadian women are not interchangeable samples.
  • Separate participation from performance: owning risky assets or bonds says nothing by itself about fees, returns, diversification or suitability.
  • Watch the subgroup qualifiers: gender, education, age and baseline wealth can change the observed relationship.

Bottom line

Financial literacy has the clearest connection to wealth accumulation in the available evidence. Confidence appears more useful as an enabler of engagement—especially when it is accurately calibrated—than as an independent source of wealth. Experiments show that confidence awareness can improve short-term responses or investment-task choices, while longer-term effects on household net worth remain unproven. Wealth may also shape later confidence, but current studies have not cleanly separated that reverse pathway. Build confidence by verifying the knowledge behind it, then use that calibrated confidence to make and review financial decisions.
