Discover’s program language says, “Rewards never expire.” The 18-month language in the terms is not an expiration deadline. It describes when Discover may disburse an unused balance if the account is closed or no rewards have been used for 18 months. Discover chooses whether that disbursement is an account credit or a check.
The short answer for Discover credit cards
If you have an open Discover credit-card account, an earned Cashback Bonus balance does not have a routine use-by date under the reviewed program terms. You can leave the rewards unused without losing them solely because time has passed.

Discover’s official consumer guidance answers the question directly: rewards do not expire for the life of the account. The Cashback Bonus terms use the shorter wording, “Rewards never expire.” That promise applies to the credit-card rewards program, not automatically to every product that uses the Discover name.

First, ordinary redemption requires the account to be in good standing. Second, Discover can restrict or delay redemption for security, verification, or account-status reasons. Those operational limits are different from an expiration date.

What the 18-month provision actually means
The terms include an 18-month provision for an account that is closed or has gone 18 months without rewards use. It does not say that the rewards disappear at month 18. Instead, Discover says it will credit the account or send a check for the balance, and it reserves the right to choose the disbursement method.
When the account is closed
Closing a credit-card account does not turn the 18-month language into a guaranteed check. Discover’s terms describe two possible ways to disburse the balance: an account credit or a check. Because the issuer reserves the method, do not assume that you can select cash, a statement credit, or a check yourself.
When the account remains open but unused
If the account is open and no rewards have been used for 18 months, the provision still describes disbursement of the balance rather than forfeiture. The practical action is to review the current account status and contact Discover if you have an untouched balance approaching that situation. The terms do not establish a recurring expiration date for every 18-month period.

Why the wording matters
An expiration rule would say that rewards are lost after a stated period. Discover’s language instead says the balance will be credited or paid out under specified circumstances. Treating the 18-month clause as “your rewards expire after 18 months” gives the provision a meaning it does not state.

Credit-card Cashback Bonus versus Cashback Debit
Check which Discover product you actually use before applying the answer. Discover Cashback Debit is a separate deposit-account product with separate terms.
| Product | Expiration while open | Account-closure consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Discover credit-card Cashback Bonus | Rewards do not expire while the credit-card account remains open. | Discover says it will credit the account or send a check for the balance in the circumstances described in its terms, and it chooses the disbursement method. |
| Discover Cashback Debit | The deposit agreement says rewards do not expire. | Unredeemed debit rewards may be forfeited if the Cashback Debit Account closes. |
The debit-account forfeiture warning should not be applied to a Discover credit-card Cashback Bonus balance. Conversely, the credit-card disbursement language should not be used as a promise that debit rewards will be paid after a deposit account closes.
How you can redeem credit-card Cashback Bonus
Discover lists several redemption paths for credit-card rewards. Availability can depend on your account status, verification, the merchant, or the redemption amount.
Recommended Free Tools
- Statement credit: Apply the rewards to the credit-card account.
- Eligible bank deposit: Transfer rewards to an eligible checking or savings account. A new deposit account that has not completed required verification may not be available for an electronic transfer.
- Select merchant purchases: Use rewards directly with participating merchants where Discover offers that option.
- Gift cards: Redeem for eligible gift cards. Gift cards can have minimum redemption amounts, so a small balance may not qualify for every card.
- Charitable donations: Donate to select charities through the available redemption program.
These choices are redemption channels, not separate expiration schedules. A minimum gift-card amount, for example, means that particular option may be unavailable until you have enough rewards; it does not mean the balance has expired.

How to check and redeem your balance safely
- Identify the product. Sign in through Discover’s website or mobile account access and confirm that the balance is attached to a credit card, not a Cashback Debit Account.
- Review the current balance and account status. Redemption may be limited when an account is not in good standing or when Discover needs to complete a security or verification review.
- Choose an available redemption method. Compare a statement credit, eligible deposit, merchant purchase, gift card, or charitable donation based on what the account displays.
- Check amount requirements. Confirm any gift-card minimum and verify that a destination bank account is eligible and verified before submitting an electronic transfer.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the on-screen confirmation or account record until the credit, deposit, purchase adjustment, gift card, or donation appears.
- Contact Discover before closing the account. If you plan to close the card, ask how the existing Cashback Bonus balance will be handled. The terms allow Discover to choose an account credit or check, so obtain the current procedure rather than relying on an assumption.
What can delay or limit redemption?
Account status
Discover’s terms tie normal redemption to an account in good standing. A delinquency, restriction, closure process, or other account-status issue can prevent an otherwise available redemption from completing immediately.
Security reviews
Discover may limit or delay a redemption for security reasons. A delay is an account-control measure, not evidence that the rewards have expired.
Bank-account verification
Electronic transfers to a new, unverified checking or savings account may be unavailable. Using a different listed redemption method does not change the underlying reward balance or create a new expiration period.
Gift-card thresholds
Gift cards can require a minimum number of rewards. If your balance is below that threshold, use another available option or wait until additional rewards post.

Examples of how the rule works
You leave a balance untouched for 10 months
Your credit-card account is open and in good standing. Nothing in the reviewed terms requires you to redeem by month 10. The balance remains available, subject to the account and program terms in effect when you redeem.
You have not used rewards for 18 months
The 18-month provision is reached, but it is not described as a forfeiture date. Discover’s terms say it will credit the account or send a check for the balance and reserve the disbursement method. Check the account and contact Discover if the balance is not handled as expected.
You close the credit card with rewards remaining
Do not assume that the rewards are automatically lost or that a check is guaranteed. Discover’s stated choices are an account credit or a check. Ask how the balance will be disbursed before closure and retain any confirmation.

You use Cashback Debit instead
The separate deposit agreement says rewards do not expire, but unredeemed debit rewards may be forfeited when the Cashback Debit Account closes. That is a different closure rule from the credit-card program.

Common misunderstandings
“Eighteen months means automatic expiration.”
No. The provision concerns disbursement of an unused balance. It does not say the balance vanishes at 18 months.
“A check is guaranteed after closure.”
No. Discover reserves the choice between an account credit and a check. The current terms do not let you promise yourself one particular method.
“All Discover rewards follow the same rule.”
No. Credit-card Cashback Bonus and Cashback Debit are separate products. The debit agreement includes a possible forfeiture on account closure that should not be transferred to the credit-card answer.
“A failed redemption means the rewards expired.”
No. Account standing, security controls, bank verification, and gift-card minimums can affect whether a redemption is available. Review the displayed reason and the current terms.
Could the policy change?
Yes. Rewards programs are governed by current account agreements and program terms. The core language reviewed here comes from Discover’s official Cashback Bonus consumer information and Discover it Card Cashback Bonus Program Terms and Conditions, including terms surfaced for 2024. Discover’s mobile benefits material and other redemption-specific terms describe channels and eligibility rather than a new expiration deadline.
Before making a large redemption, closing a card, or relying on a balance for a future payment, read the live terms shown in your account. If the online terms and an account representative give different instructions, request clarification and keep the written response.
