Possibly. A hit-and-run that damages a rental car may fall under the card’s auto rental collision damage waiver (CDW) or loss-damage benefit, because these benefits can cover physical damage or theft of the rental vehicle. Approval is never automatic: the particular card must include the benefit, you must satisfy its payment, rental, driver, reporting and exclusion rules, and the incident must fit the policy. Damage to the rental car is also different from liability for injuries or property belonging to other people.
What the card benefit can cover
Credit-card rental protection is not one standardized insurance policy. It is a benefit attached to a specific card, and the issuing bank’s current Guide to Benefits or insurance certificate controls. A network overview can describe common features, but it cannot establish the terms of every card on that network.

Visa’s current Visa Signature overview says that Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver is optional for the issuer. Where the benefit is provided, described losses may include physical damage, theft, reasonable and customary towing, and loss-of-use charges. The same overview directs cardholders to decline the rental agency’s CDW, use the covered card, make the cardholder the primary renter, list additional drivers on the agreement and consult the issuing bank’s Guide to Benefits for exclusions and conditions.

Eligibility conditions that commonly decide a claim
Before assuming the card will pay, check each condition in the benefit guide. The following requirements appear in official card materials as examples; they are not universal rules for every issuer or country.
- The benefit exists on your card. Protections vary among issuers and can differ between cards from the same issuer.
- The rental was paid in full with the eligible card. Some benefits require the entire rental charge, rather than only a deposit or partial payment, to be placed on the covered account.
- You declined the rental company’s CDW or LDW. Accepting the agency’s waiver can make the card benefit unavailable under terms that require a decline.
- You are the primary renter. The cardholder may need to be named as the renter on the contract, not merely an additional driver or person who paid for someone else’s rental.
- Every driver is authorized and listed. An unlisted driver can violate both the rental agreement and the card benefit conditions.
- The rental contract was followed. Prohibited uses, unauthorized territories, off-road driving, commercial use or other contract violations can trigger exclusions.
- The vehicle and location qualify. Policies can exclude particular vehicle classes, countries, roads or rental companies.
- The rental length is within the benefit period. Limits differ by card and may distinguish domestic and international rentals.
- You notify the required parties on time. The guide may set deadlines for reporting the loss, submitting documents or cooperating with an investigation.
Do not infer a requirement from another card’s guide. A condition that applies to one Visa card, for example, may not apply to another Visa card issued by a different bank.
Rental-car damage is not liability coverage
CDW or loss-damage protection addresses the rental vehicle. It does not automatically pay for damage to another car, a fence, a building or someone’s medical treatment. Chase’s educational overview identifies third-party property damage, injuries and related lawsuits as costs that card rental protection typically does not cover. A specific Booking.com Genius Rewards Visa Signature benefit likewise excludes personal liability and injury, as well as loss or theft of personal items.

If the hit-and-run involved damage beyond the rental car, you may need liability coverage from your personal auto policy, a separate rental-company product or another applicable policy. If the other driver is unknown, there may be additional local procedures for documenting an uninsured or unidentified motorist incident. Ask the relevant insurer and the rental company what notice is required; do not assume the card benefit will handle those claims.
Primary versus secondary protection
The order in which policies respond matters. Chase says card rental protection is often secondary to a personal auto policy, although some cards offer primary coverage. Secondary protection generally means you may need to notify your personal insurer first or use that policy before the card benefit considers remaining covered costs. Your personal policy may also impose a deductible or affect your claims history, so read its coordination language before choosing a reporting path.
“Primary” and “secondary” describe claim priority, not whether the benefit is broader. A primary card benefit can still exclude certain vehicles, countries, rental periods, drivers, charges or types of loss. Confirm the status in the exact current guide for your card and the state or country in which the rental occurred.

What to do when you discover the damage
Follow the rental company’s incident process even if the damage appears minor and even if you expect another policy to pay. Delayed notice, an incomplete return record or an unauthorized repair can complicate a claim.
- Secure the vehicle and record the scene. Photograph every damaged area, the vehicle’s position, nearby surfaces, debris, paint transfer, parking signs and lighting. Note the date and time you discovered the damage, where the car was parked and when you last saw it undamaged.
- Notify the rental company immediately. Use the company’s emergency or accident number and follow its instructions for inspection, towing, return and repairs. Ask for an incident or case number and keep the employee’s name and contact details.
- Contact police when required or appropriate. Ask the local police agency how to report a hit-and-run and how to obtain the report or incident number. A policy may request a report even where local law does not require one. No single police-report deadline applies to every card or jurisdiction, so check the benefit guide and local instructions.
- Preserve the rental file. Keep the rental agreement, checkout and return records, damage or accident report, photographs, repair estimate, towing or storage invoices and every email or text from the rental company.
- Call the card benefit administrator promptly. Request the current Guide to Benefits, claim form, notice deadline and exact supporting-document list. Tell the administrator that the loss involved an apparent hit-and-run and ask whether any special report is required.
- Coordinate with other insurance. If the card is secondary, contact your personal auto insurer as required by that policy. Ask both administrators how deductibles, loss-of-use charges and overlapping coverage will be handled.
Documents a claim administrator may request
Lists vary, and providing a document does not guarantee coverage. Chase examples include the rental company accident report, rental agreement, repair estimate, police report and photographs. A USAA card-benefits claims page lists the rental agreement, a card statement showing the rental, incident details and a police report if applicable. Keep originals and submit copies through the channel specified by the administrator.
- Proof that the eligible card paid the rental, such as the statement or transaction record.
- The complete rental contract showing the primary renter, authorized drivers, vehicle and dates.
- The rental company’s damage or accident report and any final invoice.
- Police report, incident number or proof that police were contacted, when applicable.
- Photographs and a written timeline of the discovery and notification.
- Repair estimates, towing bills and documented loss-of-use charges.
- Correspondence from a personal insurer or another payer when the card benefit is secondary.
How card terms can differ: an evidence-based comparison
These examples illustrate why the exact card document controls. They are not interchangeable policies.

| Visa Signature overview | May include physical damage, theft, reasonable and customary towing and loss-of-use charges. | Issuer participation is optional; the overview points to the issuing bank’s Guide to Benefits. It describes declining the agency CDW, using the covered card, naming the cardholder as primary renter and listing additional drivers. |
| Chase educational overview | Card protection may cover theft or collision damage to the rental car. | Benefits vary by card, are often secondary, and generally do not cover third-party property damage, injuries or related lawsuits. The page provides document examples rather than a universal claim rule. |

The cited benefit excludes personal items, injury and personal liability, and lists separate domestic and international durations and vehicle or territory exclusions. | USAA card-benefits claims page | Explains claim-submission materials for rental incidents. | Requests rental paperwork, card statement, incident information and a police report if applicable. | American Express Platinum benefit description | Describes secondary rental-vehicle damage or theft cover when conditions are met. | Examples include charging the full rental to an eligible card and declining the rental CDW. The description states there is no liability coverage and identifies police or incident reports among possible claim documents; use the current benefit terms for controlling details. |
How to check your own card before filing
- Find the card’s current Guide to Benefits or insurance certificate in online account documents, the card’s benefits portal or the number on the back of the card.
- Search for “Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver,” “Rental Car Insurance,” “Loss Damage Waiver” or “rental vehicle coverage.”
- Write down whether the benefit is primary or secondary, the eligible countries and vehicle types, maximum rental duration, payment method, CDW-decline rule and authorized-driver requirements.
- Read the exclusions for unattended vehicles, keys, prohibited use, roads, vehicle value, tires, wheels, personal property and administrative or loss-of-use charges.
- Locate the notice deadline, claim-filing deadline, required forms and acceptable police-report documentation.
- Call the administrator with the card number and rental details. Ask specifically whether an unknown-driver collision discovered while the car was parked is treated as a covered collision loss, and request the answer and claim instructions in writing.
Situations that commonly create disputes
The rental company charged you before the card claim was decided
A rental company may place a hold, charge an estimated repair amount or invoice loss-of-use costs while responsibility is reviewed. Keep the itemized statement and submit it with the claim. Do not assume a temporary authorization is the final covered loss.
The vehicle was parked and locked
Being parked and locked can help establish the facts, but it does not by itself prove coverage. The administrator may still examine the rental agreement, location, timing, photographs, police information and policy exclusions.
The rental was paid with points, a split payment or a different card
Payment rules are card-specific. A benefit that requires the full rental charge on the covered card may not apply when points, cash or another card paid part of the rental. Ask the administrator before treating a mixed payment as eligible.

An additional driver was involved
Some guides require every authorized driver to appear on the agreement. If the person who last drove the vehicle was not listed, tell both the rental company and administrator accurately; do not alter or backdate the contract.
The rental crossed a border or exceeded the allowed period
Territory and duration limits can change the result even when the same card covered a prior domestic rental. The Booking.com Visa example, for instance, distinguishes a 15-day domestic period from a 31-day international period, but those figures cannot be applied to other cards.
Questions the general summaries cannot answer
No general overview establishes whether a particular hit-and-run claim will be accepted, how a specific country defines the loss, or which local reporting deadline applies. Those answers require the card number and current benefit guide, the rental contract, the rental location and the incident facts. Coverage rules can also differ outside the United States, while the examples above are primarily US-facing.
Submit notice even if you are uncertain. A prompt report preserves your options; waiting for the other driver to be identified or for the rental company to finish its investigation can jeopardize a deadline. At the same time, do not promise payment, admit fault or authorize repairs outside the rental company’s instructions before the responsible administrators advise you.
Bottom line for a hit-and-run rental claim
A credit card may cover damage from a hit-and-run through its rental-vehicle CDW or loss-damage benefit, but only if that card offers the benefit and every eligibility, exclusion, rental-contract and notice condition is met. It usually protects the rented vehicle, not injuries or damage to other people. Notify the rental company, police when appropriate and the card administrator promptly; preserve the complete file; and determine whether your card is primary or secondary before coordinating with your personal auto insurer.
