Usually, no—not in the physical sense. Your home normally remains connected to the same shared electric grid and local utility wires. Choosing a renewable plan can change the company that contractually supplies your electricity and the renewable energy certificates (RECs) assigned to your usage, but it does not send identifiable wind or solar electrons along a dedicated line to your outlet. What changes depends on whether you choose a bundled green plan, utility program, community choice supply, shared renewables, or unbundled RECs.
Physical delivery and contractual sourcing are different
Electricity on the U.S. power system is generated by many facilities and combined on interconnected grids. Once power enters that system, the electrons reaching a particular home cannot be traced by appliance or outlet to a specific wind turbine, solar array, gas plant, or hydroelectric dam. The local distribution utility balances the network and delivers electricity through the established wires.

In a state with retail competition, a household may select a competitive supplier for the supply portion of its bill while the incumbent utility continues operating the transmission and distribution system. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes the arrangement this way: “In most states, the utility still provides monopoly transmission services to deliver the electricity through established power lines.” The utility may also continue issuing the bill, even when another company supplies the contracted product.
Therefore, “where your power comes from” can mean three separate things:

- Physical source: the generators operating on the shared grid at the time electricity is consumed.
- Contractual supplier: the company or public program responsible for procuring the electricity product you selected.
- Renewable attributes: the certificates that support a claim that a specified amount of electricity use is matched with renewable generation.
A renewable plan primarily changes the second and third items. It usually does not change the wires serving your address or create a private route from a renewable project to your meter.
What a renewable energy certificate actually represents
A REC represents the environmental attributes, or “renewable-ness,” of one megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity generation. One MWh equals 1,000 kilowatt-hours. The certificate is separate from the physical electricity. It is an accounting instrument that identifies attributes such as the renewable fuel, facility location, project vintage, generation vintage, and tracking-system identification.
When a household or supplier claims that electricity use is renewable, the relevant RECs must be owned by the claimant and retired so they cannot be sold or claimed again. Buying electricity from a renewable generator without retaining the associated certificates does not, by itself, give the buyer the right to make a renewable-use claim.

An offset generally represents one metric ton of greenhouse-gas emissions avoided or reduced by a project. A REC represents the attributes of one MWh of renewable generation. They answer different accounting questions and should not be described as interchangeable products.
Six ways a household may buy “renewable” electricity

These categories are not interchangeable. A short-term household green-plan add-on is different from a project-specific contract, and a REC purchase does not include electricity supply. Read the product description before assuming that “renewable” means the same thing in every offer.

How to evaluate a plan before enrolling
1. Identify exactly what is being sold
Ask whether the offer bundles electricity and RECs, sells RECs alone, enrolls you in a community-choice supply program, credits a shared-renewables subscription, or commits you to a particular project. The answer determines whether your normal electricity supplier changes, whether your bill changes, and what environmental claim is supportable.
2. Check the renewable percentage and resource mix
A plan may cover 100% of your usage, a smaller percentage, or a stated amount of renewable generation. Confirm whether the supply is wind, solar, biogas, hydroelectric power, or a mixture. A product marketed as “green” without a percentage or resource description leaves an important part of the comparison unanswered.

3. Examine project location and certificate vintage
Ask where the generating facilities are located, when each facility began operating, and which generation period the certificates represent. A certificate registry can identify the facility, renewable fuel, location, project vintage, generation vintage and tracking-system ID. Geographic and vintage preferences may affect price and the relevance of the product to your electricity market.
4. Confirm ownership, retirement and verification
Find out who owns the RECs and who retires them on your behalf. Retirement removes a certificate from circulation and prevents a second buyer from using it for another claim. Independent certification or verification can help confirm that the quantity and quality promised by the seller were actually delivered. If the seller will not explain these points, you cannot reliably assess the environmental claim.
5. Compare the full price, not only the advertised premium
Review the electricity rate, delivery charges, fixed fees, renewable surcharge, taxes, and any separate bill line. Determine whether the supply rate is fixed or variable, whether an escalator applies, how long the initial term lasts, and what happens at renewal. Competitive green-power contracts are often described as lasting six to 36 months, but that range is not universal; use the current contract rather than assuming a standard term.

Price can vary with the supply option, renewable resource, project geography, state or utility incentives and broader market conditions. A per-kilowatt-hour premium is only one part of the cost comparison.

Buying and retiring RECs from an existing renewable facility can support a claim that your electricity use is matched with renewable attributes. It does not, on its own, prove that your purchase caused a new project to be built. A credible claim that a transaction enabled new supply generally requires engagement before construction and a substantive contribution to the project’s ability to obtain financing.
What changes on your bill and at your meter
For a competitive supply plan, the utility commonly remains responsible for wires, outage response and transmission or distribution charges. The selected supplier may appear as a separate supply line or be identified in the utility’s bill detail. If the plan is offered directly by the utility, the utility remains both supplier and delivery company, with the renewable charge added to the normal bill.
Your meter still records total electricity consumption, not the proportion of electrons that came from renewable generators. A smart meter cannot identify the physical origin of each electron. It can measure usage by interval, while the renewable product is accounted for through contracts and certificates.
Shared-renewables programs work differently on the billing side. The off-site project produces electricity, and the subscriber may receive credits under local program rules. The credit formula, timing and treatment of subscription changes depend on the specific project and jurisdiction; they are not guaranteed by the word “community solar.”

Availability depends on your address
Not every household can choose a competitive electricity supplier. Retail choice varies by state, utility territory and municipal-utility rules. Some states are only partially restructured, and a municipal utility may not offer retail choice even when another utility in the same state does.
An EPA competitive-green-power explanation has reported 18 states and Washington, D.C. with retail choice. That count can change as laws and programs change, so it should not be treated as a permanent national total. The practical question is whether your service address qualifies today.
- Look at the supply section of your latest utility bill for the current provider and any choice-program notice.
- Check the utility’s official green-power, renewable-tariff or community-solar pages.
- Use your state public utility commission’s consumer energy-choice information to confirm authorized suppliers and contract disclosures.
- Compare the offer’s terms with your existing rate before enrolling, and save the contract and certificate information.
Environmental claims that are easy to overstate
Do not count the same REC twice
A supplier should not sell or apply the same renewable attribute to multiple customers. Ask whether the certificates are also being used to satisfy a state renewable portfolio standard or another mandate. If a government requirement already claims the attribute, a separate customer claim may double-count the benefit unless the accounting rules explicitly address that use.
Match the claim to the percentage purchased
If a plan covers only part of your consumption, describe only that portion as matched with renewable electricity. A partial purchase does not justify saying that all household electricity is renewable. A 100% product still refers to renewable attributes assigned through certificates, not to physically separated electrons at your outlet.
Do not call RECs offsets
RECs support claims about renewable attributes and indirect electricity-related emissions. They should not be presented as proof that the purchase reduced total atmospheric emissions by a specific number of tons. That is the accounting role of an offset, not a REC.

When a renewable plan may be a good fit—and when it may not
It may fit if you want a documented renewable-use claim
A bundled plan or verified REC purchase can be appropriate when your goal is to match household electricity consumption with renewable generation attributes and you are willing to pay the stated premium or administrative cost. Retired certificates and clear sourcing information make the claim easier to substantiate.
It may fit renters or households without suitable roofs
Shared renewables can provide access to an off-site project for renters, apartment residents and homeowners who cannot or do not want to install equipment. Review the subscription’s credit and cancellation terms just as carefully as you would review an electricity contract.
It may not fit if you expect different physical electricity
If your objective is to receive identifiable electricity from a nearby wind or solar facility through a dedicated connection, a standard retail plan will not deliver that outcome. The shared grid prevents that type of outlet-level tracing. A project-specific physical arrangement would be a different infrastructure and contract question.

Be cautious when a seller does not state the renewable percentage, resource, certificate ownership, retirement process, price formula, term or cancellation conditions. A low advertised premium cannot compensate for an offer whose environmental attributes and renewal charges are undefined.
A practical decision checklist
- Is this bundled electricity, unbundled RECs, community choice, shared renewables or a project-specific tariff?
- What percentage of my usage is matched, and with which renewable resources?
- Where are the facilities, and what are the project and generation vintages?
- Who owns and retires the RECs?
- Is an independent certification or verification available?
- What is the complete price, including fees, escalators, taxes and delivery charges?
- Is the rate fixed or variable, and how long is the contract?
- What are the cancellation, renewal and move-out rules?
- Are the certificates being used for a government mandate or another customer claim?
- Does the documentation support only a renewable-use claim, or does it substantiate a claim that the purchase enabled new generation?
Bottom line for a U.S. household
Choosing a renewable electricity plan can change your contractual supplier and the renewable attributes assigned to your electricity use. In most cases, it does not change the shared grid or send traceable renewable electrons to your home. The meaningful differences among offers are the product structure, renewable percentage and resource, project geography and vintage, REC ownership and retirement, verification, price and contract terms. Confirm those details for your service address before treating a plan as a particular kind of renewable purchase.
