Does Checking Your Own Credit Report Lower Your Credit Score?

No. Requesting and reviewing your own credit report is treated as a soft inquiry, not an application for new credit, so it does not lower your credit score. A lender’s credit check made after you apply is a different type of inquiry and may affect a score.

The short answer: your own request is a soft inquiry

When you ask to see your own credit file, you are accessing information already maintained by a consumer reporting company. You are not asking a lender to evaluate a new application. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) states that checking your own credit report “is not an inquiry about new credit, so it has no effect on your score.”

The CFPB’s explanation of TransUnion’s reporting also draws the same line: “Soft inquiries are shown only to you when you request a copy of your credit report – they are not included in reports shared with third parties, and do not impact your credit scores.” In practical terms, opening your report to inspect it is a review of your existing record, not a new borrowing event.

This answer is limited to a consumer checking their own report. It should not be expanded to mean that every credit check is harmless. The effect depends on who requested the report and why.

Self-checks and lender checks are different transactions

Situation Inquiry type What it means for your score
You request your own report to review your file Soft inquiry Does not affect your credit score
A lender checks your report in connection with your application for credit Hard inquiry Different from a self-request and may affect your score

A hard inquiry generally occurs in the context of seeking new credit. For example, when you apply for a loan or card, the lender may obtain your report as part of its decision. That is not the same transaction as using an official consumer-access channel to retrieve your file. The CFPB identifies this distinction as the practical test: are you merely accessing your existing report, or are you applying for new credit?

The terminology can be confusing because both events involve a company obtaining credit-report information. In a 2015 CFPB report, consumers described confusion about hard and soft inquiries as a common barrier to checking their reports. Knowing the purpose of the request removes that uncertainty: a self-request is for your review; a lender request is tied to an application.

Where to get your reports for free

For reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, the CFPB identifies AnnualCreditReport.com as the official access route. Its consumer guidance says reports are available online for free once a week from each of the three nationwide companies. That means you can obtain a report from each company during the same week, or space requests out during the year to review your file at intervals.

A temporary Equifax access provision

A CFPB answer last reviewed May 14, 2024, says consumers may request up to six additional free Equifax reports during a 12-month period through December 2026. This is a time-limited program detail, not a permanent rule. If you are reading this after December 2026, confirm the current terms before relying on that allowance.

Watch for lookalike offers

The CFPB warns that some sites advertising a free report may require you to buy another product or may enroll you in a service that later bills you. Before entering payment information, check that you are using the official AnnualCreditReport.com route or another clearly identified consumer-reporting company channel. A paid monitoring service is not required to request or review your reports.

How to review a report without creating a score problem

  1. Start with an official access method. Request the report through AnnualCreditReport.com, or use the telephone or mail method described by the CFPB. Select the nationwide company whose file you want to inspect.
  2. Confirm that the file belongs to you. Check the identifying information and accounts for signs that another person’s data has been mixed into your file. The CFPB advises consumers to make sure information is accurate and complete.
  3. Read each account entry carefully. Look for information that is incomplete, inaccurate or unfamiliar. The purpose of the review is to identify report content that does not correctly describe your credit history.
  4. Record the item and the company connected to it. Note which consumer reporting company displays the information and which business supplied it. You may need to contact both parties to correct the record.
  5. Dispute inaccurate or incomplete information with both parties. Consumers have the right to dispute an item with the consumer reporting company and with the company that furnished the information. The CFPB says the investigation is free.
  6. Keep the report and your dispute records. Save the report version you reviewed, copies of correspondence and any responses. Those records help you track what was challenged and whether the information was corrected.

Reviewing a report before applying for credit can give you time to address an error, but the review itself is not a new-credit application. The potential score concern arises from a lender’s application-related inquiry, not from your act of inspecting the file.

What to do if you find an unfamiliar inquiry or account

An unfamiliar entry deserves investigation, but do not assume that every item you do not recognize is automatically a scoring error. First identify whether the entry is a self-access record, a lender inquiry connected to an application, an account you forgot about or information that belongs to someone else.

If the information is inaccurate or incomplete, dispute it with the reporting company that lists it and with the furnisher that supplied it. The CFPB’s consumer-reporting guidance describes this two-party dispute right and says the investigation is free. Provide a clear description of what is wrong and retain copies of what you submit.

If the unfamiliar item suggests identity theft, consider a credit freeze as a separate protective step. A freeze does not replace reviewing your reports or disputing incorrect information; it is a security control intended to restrict prospective creditors’ access.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Credit freezes are separate from checking your report

The CFPB says freezes and unfreezes are free at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. You can still request and review your own files while a freeze is in place. Therefore, placing a freeze does not block the very review you may need when checking for identity theft or reporting errors.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a freeze when you want to restrict new-credit access because of suspected identity theft or another security concern. Use the report-access process when your goal is to inspect information, verify accuracy or prepare for a future application. They address different problems and can be used together.

How often should you check?

The CFPB’s current consumer answer says online reports are free once a week from each of the three nationwide companies. You can use that cadence to monitor changes, or stagger the three requests so that you review a different file at regular points during the year. The choice is a monitoring routine, not a score-management tactic: the self-request remains a soft inquiry regardless of whether you check once or repeatedly under the available access terms.

Check before a major credit application if you want time to identify and dispute inaccurate information. Also check when you receive a notice about suspected identity theft, an account you do not recognize or a reporting problem. If you see an error, begin the dispute process rather than avoiding the report out of fear that opening it will hurt your score.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Confusing a report with an application. Accessing your file for personal review is not the same as asking a lender to approve new credit.
  • Assuming every inquiry has the same effect. The CFPB distinguishes soft self-requests from hard inquiries tied to credit applications; the latter may affect a score.
  • Using an unverified “free” offer. Some sites condition access on another purchase or start a service that later charges you.
  • Disputing only one side of an error. If a furnisher supplied the incorrect information, send the dispute to both that company and the reporting company displaying it.
  • Skipping the report after a freeze. A freeze does not prevent you from requesting your files, so continue reviewing them when security concerns arise.
  • Treating a temporary access rule as permanent. The additional Equifax allowance described by the CFPB runs through December 2026; verify terms after that date.

What the CFPB guidance establishes

The CFPB’s answer on requesting a credit report was last reviewed May 14, 2024. Its consumer-reporting-company page was modified January 30, 2025, and its free-copy access page was last reviewed August 28, 2023. Together, those pages establish the access routes, the soft-versus-hard inquiry distinction, the right to dispute inaccurate or incomplete information and the free-investigation process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CFPB’s 2015 “Consumer Voices on Credit Reports and Scores” report provides context for why this question persists: consumers commonly reported confusion about inquiry types and whether checking a report could “ding” a score. The current answer is transaction-specific and straightforward. When you request your own report to review it, you are not applying for new credit.

Practical checklist

  • Use AnnualCreditReport.com or the CFPB-described telephone or mail route.
  • Review reports from Equifax, Experian and TransUnion under the available free-access terms.
  • Check that the personal information, accounts and other entries are yours and accurate.
  • Dispute inaccurate or incomplete information with the reporting company and the furnisher; the CFPB says the investigation is free.
  • Use a free credit freeze at each nationwide company when identity-theft protection is needed, while continuing to review your files.
  • Remember that your own report request is a soft inquiry; a lender’s application-related check is a separate hard inquiry that may affect a score.
