The sound test is whether the education’s total net cost and debt produce manageable payments, useful career options, and better long-term finances than realistic alternatives. Your first job is one data point in that calculation, not a guarantee of future income.
To decide, compare your actual balance and interest rate with take-home pay, essential living costs, repayment-plan rules, job stability, and the earnings path you can reasonably expect. A $70,000 starting salary can support moderate debt comfortably and still strain a large balance in an expensive city. A lower salary can be workable when debt is small and expenses are controlled.

What “worth it” should mean
“Worth it” is not a universal salary-to-debt ratio. It is a comparison between the education you bought and the alternatives you could have chosen. Include the money you actually had to pay, the debt you took on, the value of the credential, and the costs of repaying it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Total net cost: tuition, fees, housing, books, transportation, and foregone earnings, minus grants and scholarships.
- Completion likelihood: borrowing for a credential you do not finish can leave debt without the expected earnings benefit.
- Borrowing cost: principal, interest rate, when each loan was disbursed, and how long repayment lasts.
- Career outcome: realistic earnings, employment stability, location, benefits, and opportunities to progress—not only the first offer.
- Alternatives: a lower-cost school, part-time study, employer assistance, a different major, or entering the field without the same credential.
Federal Student Aid recommends examining net price, graduation rates, typical debt and repayment outcomes, and post-enrollment earnings. Its College Scorecard is designed for comparing these measures by school and program. A school-wide or national median is a reference point, not a prediction of what you personally will earn.

Start with net price, not the advertised price
Before asking whether a salary is high enough, determine what the degree really cost you. Subtract grants and scholarships from the annual cost, then add living expenses and any income you gave up while studying. Repeat the calculation for every year, because aid and living arrangements can change.
Questions to answer before borrowing
- What is the annual net price after grants and scholarships?
- What is the school’s completion rate for the program you would enter?
- How much do graduates in that program typically borrow, and what do their repayment outcomes look like?
- What are earnings after enrollment for that program and institution, and how wide is the range?
- Could you reach the same occupation through a less expensive school, a shorter credential, paid training, or work experience?
Use program-level information when it is available. A college’s overall earnings figure can conceal large differences between majors, campuses, and student circumstances. Likewise, a national median can be distorted by geography, experience, and the share of graduates who work full time.
Translate the balance into a monthly obligation
The balance on your statement is only the starting point. Your required payment and total repayment depend on the loan type, interest rate, disbursement date, repayment plan, and whether interest has accumulated or been capitalized.

| Repayment approach | What generally determines the payment | Planning implication |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed-payment plan | Loan balance and interest rate over a set term | Payment is more predictable; a longer term usually lowers the monthly bill but increases total interest. |
| Income-driven repayment (IDR) | Income and family size or dependents, subject to plan and loan eligibility | Payment can rise or fall with income; a smaller payment may allow more interest to accrue over time. |
Federal Student Aid explains that IDR payments are based on income and family size or dependents, unlike fixed-payment plans. Do not treat an income-driven payment as a permanently low cost: a promotion, a spouse’s income under applicable rules, a change in family size, or annual recertification can alter the amount. The balance can also decline slowly when the payment does not cover all accruing interest.
An illustrative payment check
Suppose two graduates each earn enough to take home $4,000 a month after taxes and payroll deductions. Assume a 6.5% fixed interest rate and a 10-year fixed schedule. These are planning assumptions, not a quoted offer or a government standard.
| Starting balance | Approximate monthly payment | Approximate amount paid over 10 years |
|---|---|---|
| $30,000 | $341 | $40,900 |
| $60,000 | $682 | $81,800 |
If essential expenses, insurance, transportation, and minimum savings total $3,000 a month, the $30,000 borrower has roughly $659 left after the payment. The $60,000 borrower has about $318 left. Both earn the same salary, but the second borrower has much less room for a rent increase, a period of unemployment, or retirement saving. The example also excludes taxes that may vary, private-loan terms, origination fees, and any graduate-school borrowing.

A useful personal calculation is:
- Add every federal and private loan balance, including accrued interest shown by each servicer.
- Obtain the required payment under your actual plan rather than relying on an online average.
- Subtract taxes, insurance, housing, food, transportation, utilities, minimum debt payments, and a basic emergency-fund contribution from monthly take-home pay.
- Test the budget with a lower salary, a delayed job start, and a few months of unemployment.
If the budget works only when your first salary continues rising without interruption, the debt is not comfortably affordable yet.
How strong is the “high-paying” job?
A first offer matters, but its quality has several dimensions beyond gross pay.
Check income durability
- Is the position permanent, contract-based, commission-based, or dependent on a probationary period?
- Does the employer operate in a cyclical industry where layoffs are common?
- Are health insurance, retirement contributions, paid leave, and relocation costs included in the offer?
- What salary range is realistic after two, five, and ten years in the occupation?
- Would you need to move to a high-cost area to keep the job?
Use the first salary as an observed starting point, then build conservative and optimistic paths. Population-level earnings data can show that a field pays well on average, but averages do not guarantee an individual’s result. Your grades, internship experience, location, work authorization, health, caregiving responsibilities, and labor-market conditions can all change the outcome.

Separate gross pay from usable cash
A $70,000 salary is not $70,000 available for bills. Estimate take-home pay after federal, state, and local taxes, payroll deductions, health coverage, and retirement contributions. Compare that figure with the cost of living where you must work. A high salary in a high-rent city may leave less discretionary cash than a lower salary in a cheaper location.
What population figures can—and cannot—tell you
Broad statistics are useful context, but their denominators differ and neither set establishes a personal borrowing limit.

Repayment rules are changing, especially for newer loans
Eligibility depends on the loan type and the date each loan was disbursed. Federal Student Aid’s current FAQ says that when all of a borrower’s loans were disbursed on or after July 1, 2026, the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) is the only available IDR plan, with exceptions that include parent PLUS loans. This is not a blanket statement about every borrower: mixed loan portfolios, consolidation, parent PLUS debt, and earlier disbursements can produce different options.

The Department of Education announced final rule changes in April 2026, with most provisions scheduled to take effect July 1, 2026 and some later. Confirm the operative rules, payment formula, annual certification requirements, and eligibility for your specific loans through current federal guidance before choosing a plan. A plan name or estimate seen before a rule change may no longer apply.
A decision test for students choosing a program
- Calculate net price by year. Include realistic housing and transportation, not just the school’s tuition line.
- Estimate total borrowing at graduation. Include interest that may accrue while you are enrolled and any existing education debt.
- Check program outcomes. Compare completion, debt repayment, and post-enrollment earnings for the same field and institution.
- Model a conservative first-year budget. Use take-home pay, local living costs, and the required payment on your actual loans.
- Stress-test the plan. Reduce expected income, delay employment, and add an emergency expense. If the plan fails immediately, reduce the borrowing or change the education path.
- Compare alternatives. Price a lower-cost institution, commuting, transferring after community college, working while enrolled, employer tuition help, or a different program with similar career access.
A decision test after graduation
Once you have a job, review the full budget rather than celebrating the salary figure. Confirm every loan’s balance, rate, servicer, and plan. Then decide whether accelerated payments, additional retirement saving, or a larger emergency fund is the best use of extra cash. Paying down a high-rate private loan can be attractive, but do not sacrifice a basic cash buffer that protects you from taking on new debt after a setback.
If your required payment is unaffordable, contact the servicer before missing a payment. Ask which plans you qualify for based on your loan types and disbursement dates, what documentation is needed, and how interest will be handled. Avoid assuming that an IDR payment estimate is fixed for the entire repayment period.

- The payment would consume most of the money left after essential expenses.
- You need credit cards or buy-now-pay-later financing for ordinary bills.
- Your budget depends on overtime, bonuses, or a second job that is not guaranteed.
- You have no room for health costs, relocation, licensing fees, or an emergency reserve.
- The job is temporary, your industry is contracting, or the offer requires unaffordable relocation.
- You are counting on forgiveness or a future rule without confirming eligibility and required certifications.
Bottom line
A high-paying first job can make student loans manageable, but it cannot by itself establish that borrowing was worthwhile. The answer is favorable when the credential’s net cost is reasonable, the debt produces a payment that fits after necessities, and the career offers durable options beyond one unusually strong starting offer. It is unfavorable when a large balance leaves no margin for living costs, job disruption, or slower earnings growth. Decide with your actual loan terms and a range of realistic income scenarios—not with the headline salary alone.
