Sometimes, but not automatically. A consolidated account statement can show life or health insurance information when a broker-dealer and an insurer (or affiliated financial-services company) arrange to share it. The insurance section is supplemental: it does not replace the carrier’s policy statement, declaration page, certificate, benefits statement or online policy record.
What a consolidated account statement is designed to show
A regular brokerage account statement is primarily an accounting of the securities account: positions, cash or money balances and activity such as purchases, sales, deposits, withdrawals, income and fees. Its core purpose is to report what the broker-dealer carries on its books and records.

A consolidated or summary statement combines information from more than one financial-services relationship into one report. Depending on the arrangement, it may put brokerage holdings beside banking balances, retirement accounts, annuities or insurance information. The report is intended to make a household’s financial picture easier to review; it is not necessarily a legal inventory of every product a person owns.

When life or health insurance can appear
A data-sharing arrangement includes the insurer
A life or health policy can be listed when the broker-dealer has an arrangement with the carrier, an insurance agency, an affiliated financial-services entity or another provider that supplies policy data. The consolidated report may then display a policy number, carrier name, product description, status or a value supplied by that provider.
The exact fields depend on what the participating entities transmit. A report that lists a life policy may show only identifying information, while another may include a reported cash value. A health-policy entry might identify the plan and carrier without attempting to value the coverage. The presence or absence of a particular field is controlled by the reporting arrangement, not by a universal FINRA template.
The policy is shown as externally held
Insurance information may be included even though the broker-dealer does not custody or administer the policy. In that case, the policy is an externally held asset or a courtesy listing. The broker is relaying information from another entity or from the customer rather than reporting an asset carried in the brokerage account.
FINRA requires assets that the member does not carry and that are not on its books and records to be “clearly and distinguishably separated” on the statement. Look for a separate insurance section, a different heading, a footnote, or wording such as “externally held,” “held away” or “for informational purposes.”
The report is limited to investment accounts
Some firms call a document “consolidated” even though it consolidates only several brokerage accounts, such as taxable, individual-retirement and joint accounts. If no insurance provider participates, a life or health policy will not be added simply because the report has a consolidated title.

What FINRA’s summary-statement rules require
FINRA’s account-statement framework distinguishes the broker’s own records from information supplied by another entity. When a summary includes insurance products or other assets outside the broker-dealer’s books, the statement must provide enough context for a customer to understand who supplied the information and what the broker is (and is not) responsible for.
- Identify each supplying entity. The summary should name the broker-dealer and the other company or companies contributing information.
- Separate categories or entities. Brokerage assets and externally supplied insurance information must be distinguishable rather than blended into one unexplained total.
- Provide customer-service contacts. The report should tell you whom to contact for questions about each information source.
- Explain the report’s limited purpose. FINRA’s prescribed language says the summary is provided for convenience and may include assets that are not held by the broker-dealer.
- State that it does not replace other statements. The summary must say it “does not replace any other statement(s) the customer may receive from other financial institutions that hold the customer’s assets.”
- Disclose the source and valuation of external assets. Where information or a value comes from the customer or another external source, the statement must say so and explain that the member is not responsible for that information.
- Address SIPC coverage. External assets may not be protected by the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC), and the statement must identify that limitation where applicable.
These disclosures are why an insurance line on a brokerage summary should not be read as proof that the broker-dealer owns, holds, guarantees or administers the policy.
How to interpret a policy line on your statement
“Listed” does not necessarily mean “held”
A life or health policy can be displayed for tracking purposes while the policy remains with the insurer. The broker-dealer may have no authority to change beneficiaries, approve claims, adjust coverage, collect premiums or interpret exclusions. The carrier remains responsible for the contract it issued.
Check the entry for the carrier’s legal name, policy or certificate number, the contributing entity and any externally held or courtesy disclosure. If those details are missing, contact the broker before treating the line as a custody record.
A displayed value is not the same as coverage
Life insurance can have a cash value, death benefit, or both, but those figures answer different questions. A summary may show a value supplied by the insurer or another source; it may not show the current death benefit, surrender charges, loans, riders or beneficiary designations. Health insurance generally describes access to covered medical benefits rather than an investment value. A total on a household summary should not be used to determine how much coverage is in force.

The summary is not the policy contract
Coverage amounts, premiums, effective dates, renewal terms, exclusions, waiting periods, riders, beneficiaries, deductibles, co-insurance and claim procedures are controlled by the insurer’s policy documents and current records. If a summary conflicts with the carrier’s latest statement or portal, ask both institutions to reconcile the discrepancy and rely on the contract and carrier record for coverage decisions.
Why your life or health policy may be missing
No participating provider or data feed
The most common explanation is that the broker’s consolidation service does not receive data from your carrier. A broker can offer a consolidated report without having agreements with every insurer in the market.
The policy is under a different owner or identifier
Policies owned by a spouse, trust, employer, parent or separate legal entity may not match the name or account credentials used for the consolidated report. A group health plan may also be recorded under an employer rather than under an individual account.
Data is delayed, incomplete or discontinued
Feeds can omit newly issued policies, fail to reflect a conversion or renewal, or stop after an insurer changes its reporting arrangement. A stale entry can remain visible after a policy lapses or is replaced. The date of the summary matters; it is a snapshot, not a live policy ledger.
The product is outside the report’s scope
A service may include certain life products but exclude health coverage, long-term-care policies, employer plans, policies issued in another country or products held through a separate agency. Ask what categories and carriers the service supports rather than assuming that “insurance” means every policy.

A missing line does not establish that coverage is absent. Confirm status with the insurer or plan administrator.
Which document should you use for each question?
| Document | Primary source | Main purpose | Insurance information | Authority for coverage terms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Regular brokerage account statement | Broker-dealer | Report securities positions, cash or money balances and account activity | Usually outside its core scope unless separately included | Not the controlling insurance record |
| Consolidated or summary statement | Broker-dealer plus identified participating entities | Present multiple financial relationships in one convenient report | May list life or health policies, including externally held information | Supplemental; does not replace the insurer’s statement |
| Insurer policy statement, declaration page or certificate | Insurance carrier or plan administrator | Document the policy or plan in force | Policy number, coverage, premiums, dates and other carrier-specific details, according to the document | Use this and the policy contract for coverage terms |
| Insurer online policy record | Insurance carrier or plan administrator | Provide the latest available account and policy information | Current status and details made available through the portal | Confirm with the carrier when a portal entry conflicts with a contract or formal statement |
How to verify a policy in a consolidated report
- Identify the document type. Determine whether you are reading a regular brokerage statement, a consolidated summary or an insurer’s own policy statement. The title, disclosure page and contact information usually make this clear.
- Locate the insurance section. Check whether it is separated from brokerage assets and whether the report names the carrier, contributing entity and a customer-service contact.
- Read the custody disclosure. Determine whether the policy is carried by the broker-dealer or shown as externally held for convenience. Note any statement that the broker is not responsible for the source data or valuation and any SIPC limitation.
- Match identifiers. Compare the policy or certificate number, insured person, owner and carrier with the latest insurer statement. Do not rely on a similar product name alone.
- Check status and dates with the carrier. Verify that premiums are current and that the policy is in force, and confirm effective dates, beneficiaries and coverage amounts through the insurer’s records.
- Investigate an omission. Ask the broker whether the carrier participates in its consolidation service and whether the policy type, ownership structure or jurisdiction prevents inclusion. Ask the insurer whether it is transmitting data and whether any recent change caused a delay.
- Retain the insurer’s documents. Keep the policy contract, declaration page, certificate, benefits statements and relevant correspondence even when the consolidated report is accurate. The summary is a convenience copy, not a replacement.
What to do when the two records disagree
The summary shows a policy that the insurer cannot find
Contact the broker using the number printed on the summary and request the source entity, date of the data and identifier that produced the entry. Then contact the carrier through an independently verified channel. An old feed, a typographical error or a policy belonging to another household member can create a false match. Ask the broker to correct or remove the line after the carrier confirms the facts.
The insurer shows active coverage but the summary omits it
Do not cancel or change coverage based on the omission. Obtain the latest carrier statement or online record, then ask whether the broker’s service supports that carrier and policy type. If you need the policy visible for estate or financial planning, maintain a separate inventory with the policy number, carrier contact and renewal or premium dates.
The summary reports an unexpected value
Ask whether the figure is a cash value, death benefit, premium amount, estimated value or a number supplied by an external source. Request the valuation date and methodology, then compare it with the insurer’s statement. A consolidated total can be useful for organization while still being unsuitable for tax, lending, estate or coverage calculations.
How practices differ outside the United States
FINRA Rule 2231 applies to U.S. broker-dealers. Other jurisdictions may use a separate insurance-account or repository model rather than adding policies to a brokerage summary. For example, India’s insurance regulator, IRDAI, describes an e-Insurance Account that can hold life, health, pension and general policies, with the repository sending an annual statement containing policy details. That is an insurance-record system, not evidence that a U.S. broker-dealer’s consolidated statement must include every policy.

If your accounts span countries, identify which institution issued each document, which law governs the account and whether the statement is a broker summary, an insurance-repository statement or the carrier’s own record.
Practical record-keeping for households
Use the consolidated report as an index, not as your only insurance file. Keep a current list of each policy’s carrier, policy or certificate number, owner, insured person, coverage type, premium frequency, renewal or effective date and the contact method for service. Store the carrier’s formal documents and note where beneficiaries or dependents are recorded.
Review the list after a marriage, divorce, birth, employment change, move, policy conversion, beneficiary update or change in premium payment. A quarterly or annual reconciliation can reveal a lapsed policy, an outdated address or an omitted policy before a claim or estate-administration deadline makes the issue urgent.
Bottom line
A consolidated account statement may include life or health insurance policies when a participating insurer or related provider supplies the information. Inclusion is optional, and a listed policy may be externally held rather than carried by the broker-dealer. FINRA requires clear separation and disclosures for such information, including notice that the summary is for convenience and does not replace statements from other financial institutions. Use the insurer’s policy documents and current records to verify coverage, premiums, beneficiaries, exclusions and effective dates; treat the consolidated report as a useful overview only.
