Documents Required to Transfer Mutual Fund Units After Death in India

By TheFinanceBase Team 10 min read

The documents depend first on how the deceased held the folio. A surviving joint holder normally uses Form T2; a registered nominee uses Form T3; a claim with no nomination requires T3 plus legal-heir and estate evidence; and an HUF folio follows a separate T4 or T5 process. In every route, the recipient must complete KYC, provide acceptable bank proof and submit the death certificate in the form the mutual fund registrar (RTA) or asset management company (AMC) accepts.

The checklist below reflects SEBI’s 2024 transmission matrix and AMFI’s June 2025 guidance. Individual AMCs and RTAs can require route-specific attestations or additional documents, so obtain the current checklist for each folio before sending originals.

Start by identifying the holding pattern

Do not begin by collecting random certificates. Find the folio statement, identify the registered holder pattern and check whether a nomination is recorded. The route controls the form, the claimant and the level of estate documentation.

Situation Primary form Who receives the units Main evidence
First holder in a joint folio has died Form T2 Surviving joint holder or holders Death certificate, survivor identity and KYC, bank proof, deceased holder’s attested identity proof
Sole holder or all holders have died and a valid nominee is registered Form T3 Registered nominee; guardian acts for a minor Authenticated death certificate, nominee PAN and KYC, bank proof, and minor documents where applicable
Sole holder or all holders have died and there is no nomination Form T3 Legal heir or other eligible claimant Death certificate, claimant KYC and bank proof, relationship and indemnity evidence, plus estate documents based on value
HUF Karta has died Form T4 or T5, depending on the change requested New Karta or persons entitled under the HUF arrangement Death certificate, bank certification, KYC, indemnity and relationship or partition evidence

For multiple folios, repeat the review for every folio and AMC/RTA. A nomination on one folio does not automatically establish entitlement to another folio.

Documents common to most transmission claims

Death certificate

Submit the deceased holder’s death certificate in the format specified by the receiving AMC or RTA. The procedure may require the original, an attested copy or a copy processed after the original has been seen and verified. Keep the original available even when a copy is filed.

PAN and KYC of the recipient

The nominee, surviving holder or legal-heir claimant generally provides PAN and KYC documents. If the recipient’s PAN is already recorded in the folio, the AMC/RTA may not ask for it again, but confirm that before omitting it. KYC is not merely a formality: SEBI’s matrix states, “Transmission will be completed only once the status of the KYC is ‘KYC complied’.”

If the recipient is not KYC-compliant, submit the required KYC form or acknowledgement and supporting identity and address documents. A KYC acknowledgement alone may not complete the process if the status has not changed to “KYC complied.” Check the status before following up on transmission.

Bank-account proof

Use a cancelled cheque with the recipient’s name pre-printed, or a recent bank statement or passbook. The statement or passbook is generally required to be no more than three months old. The account name must match the person to whom the units will be transmitted. If a guardian operates an account for a minor, use the account structure and name format required by the AMC/RTA.

Identity proof and attestation

The deceased holder’s attested identity proof is commonly requested as a risk-control document, including on nominee claims. Depending on the route and document, copies may need self-attestation, a bank-manager attestation, notarisation, gazetted-officer attestation or “original seen and verified” processing. Do not assume that one type of attestation substitutes for another; follow the current checklist issued for the folio.

Documents issued outside India

Death certificates and civil-status documents issued outside India must be apostilled before submission, according to SEBI’s 2024 requirements. The receiving institution may also prescribe translation or certification requirements, so ask for those instructions before dispatch.

Surviving joint holder: Form T2

When the first holder of a joint folio dies, the surviving holder normally takes over as the new first holder rather than proving inheritance through a court process. If two joint holders survive, the second holder becomes the new primary or first holder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Checklist for the surviving-holder route

  • Completed Transmission Request Form T2.
  • The deceased holder’s death certificate, original or an accepted attested copy.
  • PAN of each surviving joint holder when it is not already available in the folio records.
  • A cancelled cheque bearing the new first holder’s pre-printed name, or a bank statement/passbook not more than three months old.
  • KYC acknowledgement or the applicable KYC form if a surviving holder is not KYC-compliant.
  • Attested identity proof of the deceased holder.

How the change is recorded

The transmission changes the order of holders in the folio. The survivor does not become a nominee; the survivor becomes the first holder under the joint holding arrangement. Confirm the revised bank mandate and correspondence details after the folio is updated.

Registered nominee: Form T3

If the sole holder, or all holders, have died and a valid nomination is registered, the nominee route is usually the most document-efficient. The nominee still has to establish identity, KYC and bank ownership; nomination does not remove those controls.

Adult nominee checklist

  • Completed Transmission Request Form T3.
  • Authenticated death certificate of the deceased holder.
  • Nominee’s PAN.
  • Nominee’s KYC documents and confirmation that the status is “KYC complied.”
  • Pre-printed cancelled cheque in the nominee’s name, or a recent bank statement/passbook not more than three months old.
  • Attested identity proof of the deceased holder where requested under the transmission matrix.

Attestation threshold for nominee claims

For transmission up to ₹5 lakh, the nominee’s signature is attested by the bank manager. For a value above ₹5 lakh, the specified attestation is by a notary public or a Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC). The threshold applies to the transmission value under the applicable procedure; ask the AMC/RTA how it calculates value when several folios or schemes are involved.

Minor nominee

A minor nominee cannot complete the claim independently. Submit the minor’s PAN where required, or the guardian’s PAN when the procedure calls for it, together with the minor’s KYC arrangement and a birth certificate. Provide the guardian’s identity and KYC documents, the guardian’s signature and the bank proof required for an account held in the minor’s name or in the permitted joint format. The guardian must sign in the capacity specified on Form T3.

No nomination: legal-heir and estate documentation

Without a registered nomination, the AMC/RTA cannot rely on a named recipient. The claimant must show why the units should be transmitted to them and protect the fund from competing claims. In addition to T3, prepare identity, relationship, indemnity and—where applicable—court or estate documents.

Core no-nomination checklist

  • Completed Form T3.
  • Death certificate of the sole holder or every deceased holder.
  • Claimant’s PAN and KYC, with “KYC complied” status.
  • Cancelled cheque with the claimant’s pre-printed name, or a bank statement/passbook not more than three months old.
  • Attested identity proof of the deceased holder.
  • Evidence of the claimant’s relationship to the deceased.
  • An indemnity bond in the form required by the AMC/RTA.
  • Individual affidavits from claimants or heirs when required.
  • No-objection certificates (NOCs) from other legal heirs where applicable.

The exact combination of relationship evidence, affidavits and NOCs depends on the family circumstances. For example, an NOC cannot replace proof of identity or KYC, and a relationship certificate does not by itself establish that every other heir has released their claim.

How the value changes the estate documents

Transmission value at PAN level Typical additional evidence in AMFI’s June 2025 guidance Important qualification
Up to ₹5 lakh Relationship evidence, indemnity bond, affidavits and NOCs where applicable The AMC/RTA may still request a will, legal-heir document or other proof based on the facts.
More than ₹5 lakh and up to ₹10 lakh A registered will or a legal-heirship certificate route, supported by indemnity and NOCs where required Use the document type accepted for the particular state and claim; an unregistered family letter is not an automatic substitute.
Above ₹10 lakh One of a probated will, succession certificate, letter of administration or court decree The threshold is stated at PAN level; confirm aggregation and valuation with the AMC/RTA.

“Probated” means the court has admitted the will to probate. A succession certificate and a letter of administration are different court-issued instruments, and the appropriate document depends on the estate and jurisdiction. Where a court decree is used, it must clearly support the claimant’s entitlement to the mutual fund units.

When there is a will

Provide the will in the form required for the transmission value and jurisdiction. A registered will may support the ₹5 lakh-to-₹10 lakh route described by AMFI, while a higher-value claim requires a probated will or one of the alternative court instruments listed above. If probate is required, submitting only a photocopy of the signed will will not satisfy that requirement.

When there are several heirs

List every heir identified by the applicable legal-heir document. Heirs who are not receiving the units may need to sign NOCs or affidavits. Ensure names, dates of birth and relationships are consistent across the death certificate, identity documents, legal-heir evidence and the transmission form. Inconsistencies commonly lead to a clarification request.

Death of an HUF Karta

HUF folios use a separate process because the Karta acts for the Hindu Undivided Family. The applicable form may be T4 or T5, depending on whether the request changes the Karta, records a successor or addresses dissolution or partition.

Documents commonly requested

  • Relevant Form T4 or T5.
  • Death certificate of the deceased Karta.
  • Bank certification confirming the new Karta, in the format prescribed by the AMC/RTA.
  • PAN and KYC documents for the new Karta and other persons whose details must be updated.
  • Indemnity and relationship evidence.
  • For dissolution or partition, a notarised settlement deed, partition deed or court decree, as applicable.

Because an HUF change can alter ownership, authority and tax records at the same time, obtain the exact HUF checklist before signing any deed or submitting originals.

Submission workflow

  1. Locate every folio. Gather statements, account numbers, scheme names and the name of each AMC/RTA. Record whether the deceased was sole, joint, nominee-linked or an HUF Karta.
  2. Check the nomination. Ask the AMC/RTA to confirm the nomination recorded against each folio. Do not assume that a nomination on an older folio was carried to a newer one.
  3. Download the current form. Use the current AMFI transmission-document ready reckoner and the AMC/RTA’s version of T2, T3, T4 or T5. Forms and checklists can change.
  4. Calculate the applicable value. For no-nomination claims, determine the PAN-level transmission value so the ₹5 lakh and ₹10 lakh document thresholds can be applied correctly.
  5. Complete KYC first. Check the recipient’s KYC status and submit any missing KYC form, PAN or supporting identity and address documents. Transmission cannot be completed until the status is “KYC complied.”
  6. Prepare bank proof. Obtain a pre-printed cancelled cheque or a bank statement/passbook dated within the permitted three-month window. Replace an old statement before filing.
  7. Arrange attestations. Use bank-manager attestation up to ₹5 lakh for nominee or claimant signatures where specified; use notary or JMFC attestation above ₹5 lakh. Apply apostilles to documents issued outside India.
  8. Assemble originals and copies. Keep originals available for verification and make self-attested or notarised copies exactly as the checklist requires. Do not staple documents in a way that obscures seals or signatures.
  9. Submit through the permitted channel. File at the AMC/RTA office, investor-service centre, postal address or digital channel specified for that folio. Include all folio numbers and a contact address.
  10. Retain acknowledgement. Keep the stamped receipt, courier proof, submitted document list and copies. Follow up using the folio number and acknowledgement reference rather than sending duplicate claims.

Common rejection points and practical fixes

KYC remains incomplete

Symptom: The form and death certificate are accepted, but transmission is held. Fix: Check whether the recipient’s KYC status has actually become “KYC complied,” then provide the missing KYC evidence and request status confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bank proof is too old or the name does not match

Symptom: A statement is older than three months, or the cheque shows a different account name. Fix: Obtain a new statement/passbook or a cancelled cheque with the recipient’s pre-printed name and confirm the guardian or joint-account format for a minor.

Wrong form for the holding pattern

Symptom: A legal-heir claim is filed on the surviving-joint-holder route, or an HUF request is filed on an ordinary T3 form without the required HUF documents. Fix: Reconfirm the registered holding pattern and replace the form before resubmission.

Attestation does not match the value

Symptom: A bank-manager attestation is used for a claim above ₹5 lakh. Fix: Obtain the notary-public or JMFC attestation specified for the higher-value route.

Foreign civil documents are not apostilled

Symptom: An overseas death certificate or relationship document is returned. Fix: Arrange apostille and any required translation or certification before filing again.

Competing heirs are not addressed

Symptom: The claimant submits a relationship certificate but no NOCs, affidavits or court document where those are required. Fix: Map all legal heirs, obtain the required consents, and use the estate document appropriate to the transmission value.

What to verify before signing

  • The deceased holder’s name and date of death match the folio and death certificate.
  • The form is the current T2, T3, T4 or T5 version for the identified route.
  • Every recipient’s PAN, address and KYC status are correct.
  • The bank proof is within three months and shows the intended recipient.
  • Signatures are made in the correct capacity, including guardian or new-Karta signatures.
  • Attestation level, notarisation and apostille requirements have been met.
  • All heirs, NOCs, affidavits, wills and court documents required by the value and facts are included.
  • You have a complete copy set and an acknowledgement for every folio submitted.

Requirements can vary by AMC/RTA, folio mode, claimant facts and changes to SEBI or AMFI procedures. Confirm the current transmission checklist with the relevant AMC or RTA immediately before submission, especially for no-nomination, HUF, minor and foreign-document cases.
